Epiphone Hummingbird

By Joey Manor from Wilmington, NC at the Sea on October 10, 2023 Music Background: Experienced non professional musician. Can read music and a crap case when he sees one. Shame on you, Fender. Shame, shame for that garbage you brand a case.

This a finely built guitar. It sounds great, holds tune extremely well in use or over time. I know that Epiphone is a 'kissing cousin ' to the Gibson built equipment but ask yourself this: The Epiphone is made of the same designs, woods, with Big Brother looking over their shoulders , and can monitor every aspect of the production from start to finish. Just as they do at the Nashville. Gibby owners will swear their are significant better quality. Not true! They pay an extra $3000 for the Gibson logo. Ask yourself about the performance differences. They aren't any different and if there is a slight difference, is it a $2,500 difference. NO. I suppose from the poor ratings are from people that Didn't read the manual and simply check it over. They worst sounding guitar ever or the worst guitar hack ever? I'm betting my money on the instrument. I have a Zagar, fantastic guitar! The Epiphone just feels better. Sweetwater Music has great tech help videos and my personal sales agent, Andy Miller, has been a blessing to me for assistance in anything music or guitar related for several years now. Newbies, just talk with a guitar tech & not the sales person in a big box store. Just ask for them first at Sweetwater Music.

My friends tell me this guitar sounds better than the Martin guitars they play.

By Chris Tompkins from New York City on September 26, 2023 Music Background: Open Mic performer and guitar player hobbyist.

I bought this guitar back in October of 2022 at a below market price from Sweetwater. After I made a slight truss rod adjustment of the neck to adjust the action and added extra light gauge strings, it sounds and plays beautifully. Performance players I know who play Martin guitars loved the rich resonance and deep moderately bright timber. It's my go to guitar for playing at Open Mics as a plug in electric acoustic. Probably one of the best musical instruments I have bought over the past 20 years because of playability, tone, and timber. I highly recommend this guitar especially if you can not afford the Gibson Hummingbird it is modeled after.

Happy to have this guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on September 1, 2023 Music Background: Porch picker/bar musician for 30+ years

I love the tone and the action. It looks great and sounds great.Totally worth the money. Delivery was on time. I was able to have it delivered to a nearby Fed Ex office so it wouldn't be sitting out on my porch. The tuning pegs and construction are solid. Played right out of the box. Intonation at 12th fret harmonic is great on all strings. Alex Jasiak with Sweetwater was very helpful.

I didn't realize the battery for the pickup is actually inside the guitar. I have small hands so it works for me, but I might not have bought it if I had known about the battery before. Still have to loosen the strings to get access, but only takes a few minutes (less than 5). I don't play a lot of acoustic shows, but that might change. I don't see changing the battery being a big issue, but who knows. Anyways, I plugged it into my Fender Champion 20 after I figured out where the battery bag is. Sounds nice plugged in. Tone and volume controls are responsive and can produce plenty of sounds.

I moved up from an 1960's Airline archtop I have played for 20 something years and am glad I did! I am not a gearhead, so I don't know about the different woods and the specifics of why this guitar or another would be better. I have always loved the look and sound of the Gibson Hummingbird, but I can't spend $ on a guitar. This guitar, in my opinion, is absolutely worth the $ price tag.

Just a wonderful guitar!!

By Richard Carlton from Breese, IL on August 18, 2023 Music Background: Played guitar for over 50 years. Mostly at places in St.Louis, Missouri

I will not bore with my musical history. I have played many years and many guitars. I really wanted the Hummingbird. I bought a demo and glad I did. Sweetwater calls it a demo. It looked brand new and sounded amazing. I am so happy. And have received a ton of compliments already in the short time I've had it. Haven't changed strings yet. I always change strings on new guitars, but it sounds fantastic and holds tune. The more I play it, day by day, the better it sounds. Good wood on guitars is important. Love the spruce top! Beautiful guitar! I look forward to purchasing more demos in the future. And many thanks to Ethan Katthau for his help. Sweetwater is the only place I will ever buy a guitar.

Flawless build quality

By Paul Alldredge from CALDWELL, ID on August 17, 2023

I am most impressed with the build quality and tone from this guitar. I have other guitars that I paid much more for that do not exhibit the quality of this guitar. I am very happy to share this guitar with friends who are looking for a quality guitar without breaking the bank. Also, I am so pleased with this guitar that I purchased a hard shell case for it from Sweetwater.

Awesome Guitar

By Paul Alldredge from CALDWELL, ID on August 7, 2023

I have a collection of name brand guitars and this one will rate with the best of the lot at a very affordable price tag. Add to this Sweetwater delivered it to my door in about a weeks time. The build quality on this guitar is flawless. The only thing I don't care for is the strings. This is my choice and has nothing to do with this guitar. I will put on some Elixir strings when a change is needed. I intend to download my guitars to my grandkids when I no longer play them.

What a Guitar

By TOMMY GODBOLD from Lake Waccamaw, NC on August 3, 2023 Music Background: Former Pro (Road Musician)

I love this guitar. When I was on the road I used Gibson, Fender and Hofner sold it all quit playing s few years later bought a Lawsuit Takamine it gave me the fever bought a Strat and more but not being on the road making money with my instruments I dropped back a little om the Gibson acoustic's to Epi's with no regrets this guitar is so niceif you don't want to spend the big money it's the one to buy.

No adjustments!!

By Robb from Warren OH on June 13, 2023 Music Background: 32 plus years stage experience

This guitar needed nothing played beautiful straight out of the box. I see other people talking about the guitar staying in tune I have never had an acoustic stay in tune as well as this one.The grover tuning keys are top of the line.

Looks, Sounds, Feels Great!

By PW from CA on June 2, 2023

Great price on a killer guitar... It just feels right.

A beauty to look at, to hold and play

By Charlie Simonds from Rio Vista, California on May 10, 2023 Music Background: Used to play in Rock and Country bands, I'm now 70 and play for myself and with friends (no more hauling my Equipment around anymore)

Josh and I were talking about our similar backgrounds and we were settling up my Order, when he asked if there was anything else that I wanted or needed, when I saw this beautiful Epiphone Hummingbird, he agreed with me and we got off on a tangent about our previous conversation, when he said, "you know, that honestly is a beautiful guitar". That was it, I just knew I wanted that Guitar.

The Crew in the Guitar Workshop did a Guitar setup and Plek Pro Adjustment. When I received my new Guitar, I set it on a guitar stand & commenced to reading the materials sent by Sweetwater. I looked at the 55-point Inspection Card, feeling very impressed and then I looked at the Guitar Workshop Setup Specs and I was a little antsy, but I picked up the Guitar and started finger picking. The feel of the fretboard was like this guitar was made for me and the sound output was surprisingly louder than I anticipated. I played a couple more songs using a pick. I then did my final test, plugging into my Fender Champion 50XL Amplifier. It made perfect sound through the amp. I couldn't expect any more pleasure than this Guitar. It's the best....Thank you Josh and thank you Sweetwater. I'm as happy with this Guitar as I am with my Gibson TradPro V Les Paul, that I bought in March. Thanks again.

Beautiful tone, perfect neck.

By Rob from Northern California on April 21, 2023 Music Background: Retired, semi-pro

I bought this wondering if this will be just another acoustic that my arthritic hands can't play well and then sit it in a corner to gather dust. The neck compares to my Riviera and my Les Pauls. Slim and thin! That was my first impression. Then the tone. I don't have another acoustic that has this beautiful pitch. I love this guitar. I play it daily. What a nice surprise.

Definitely worth the price

By RPeal from Florida on April 19, 2023

An excellent mid-priced guitar. Played great out of the box, and once it adapted to Florida humidity and I had it set up and action lowered, it plays like a much more expensive guitar.

who sells guitars this good

By Steve Barry from Gordonville, TX on January 31, 2023 Music Background: FB music video

crisp, but full, individual notes, but slashing, warm anytime you roll a knob. So pretty, it makes you look good. Honestly give one as a gift. details will floor you.

Very Impressed!

By Corey Massey from Danville, AL on January 6, 2023

After playing this guitar for the past week I'm really impressed with the build quality and especially the SOUND! This guitar's sound is amazing. Epiphone has seriously stepped up their game. This guitar feels like it's much more expensive than it is. I'm not sure how they are doing it but they have me sold. Also the set-up out of the box is really good. I've owned and played other much more expensive acoustic guitars but this one has impressed me the most! Keep up the Amazing work Epiphone!!!

One of the most well-known guitars, and I own one.

By Steve Barry from Gordonville, TX on December 19, 2022 Music Background: FBMTV

Not only well known, but a real prize. It is the prettiest guitar in the room. I wanted to give one to my daughter's friend who stayed with us on weekends. Gave her a $50 guitar, just to look at, and always planned to give her one of these. I don't know where she is, but, I got one. I got it to play. peace

Beautiful guitar

By Gib from Pennsylvania on December 9, 2022 Music Background: Been playing country music for 57 years

Absolutely love my new Hummingbird. She is so beautiful and feels so good when you hold and play. The neck is shaped so that it's easy to play. Haven't hooked it up to an amp yet still enjoying playing it on the acoustic side. I thank Ray and all the people at Sweetwater for their prompt service. Everytime I order from them I get what I order on time or early. If you have questions they're eager to answer anything you need to know. I'll never buy anything from anyone but Sweetwater

By Gilbert Hornick on November 17, 2022 Music Background: Playing country music for the past 57 years

Ordered it on Tuesday got it Thursday. Gotta thank Ray and all the people at Sweetwater. This Hummingbird was well packaged to keep it from getting damaged. Got it out played it awhile and of course it was still in tune. I absolutely will not do any business with anyone but Sweetwater. Again many thanks to Ray and everyone at Sweetwater

Great guitar for the price, and beautiful too!

By Alan from Allentown, Pa on October 26, 2022 Music Background: 40 years of playing acoustics. .

I received my Sweetwater Epiphone Hummingbird Studio and am quite pleased with it. Very playable out of the box, but I did have a set up done for my usually low action as that is the way I like it, but it was set up quite nicely as is. Great singers guitar, sweet and clear and clean chords, vibrant and airy, with a nice balance that does not over ride the voice as you play it and sing. Thank you Derrick my sales rep, and all others at Sweetwater. It was well packed and fully humidified when I received it. I can always tell when a guitar is good because you can just sit back and almost forget it's in your lap, and just play it, it blends with who you are as you play..and the present discount sales price is a real deal for customers too! And it is a wonderful complement to my Gibson Hummingbird, I love them both!

A great guitar, period.

By Rob from Texas on July 25, 2022 Music Background: semi-pro musician, playing guitar 25+ years

I was looking for a nice acoustic. After playing a friend's Hummingbird Pro (an older version with external controls for the electronics) at a recording session, I was hooked. Opened up Sweetwater on my phone, picked one with a nice dark fretboard, and pulled the trigger.

It arrived ready to play out of the box; the fit and finish exceeded my expectations. I love how playable the neck is, and it's got a nice, full tone. Usually not a fan of stock strings on guitars, but these have been nice so far. I've had it about 3 months and play it almost every day. It does what a great guitar should: it inspires you to pick it up often and play more. I could say this as a great guitar for the price, but I'll say it's a great guitar, period.

Epiphone Hummingbird Pro

By Rob Bauer from FL on February 15, 2022 Music Background: Hobby

I have always wanted a Hummingbird, because I think it's one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen, plus the Keith Richards connection. Delivery was fast enough, but the hardest part was the 24 hour wait from the time it arrived til I opened it. It came from extreme cold to warm weather, and the warning sticker was pretty ominous lol. Upon opening, it was beautiful, perfect, and in tune. I can't put it down, and it fit perfectly in the Epiphone case I bought with it. Thank you Sweetwater, and my sales engineer Noah Berends. I emailed him with a concern at 2 am and got a reply by 7:45 am (6:45 his time).

Good value on a long lasting instrument

By Joseph from Illinois on January 29, 2022

This is a good long lasting guitar and a good value for the money. It holds its own with some more expensive instruments and is a good choice for a student as it has tones for a range of skill levels. I have had mine quite a long time if you look into them they hold their value as well.

Epiphone knocked it out of the park with this guitar. It is not only stunning the sound is warm, rich, and pristine. The neck is smooth as silk and extremely playable. Plug into an amp and the Fishman pickups shine. This is truly a special guitar. Thank you Epiphone and thank you Sweetwater.

* MY 2015 EPIPHONE HUMMINGBIRD PRO vs MY 1970 GIBSON HUMMINGBIRD *

By LESLIE DAVIDSON from Belmont, NC 28012 on August 28, 2021 Music Background: FOLK ROCK

AS OF 2020 *I have brought all my business now to SWEETWATER*, (but that's another story).
I wanted a Hummingbird that I had no worries about banging it around, and taking it on the road.
BUT, since I bought the Epiphone, I have the same worries because it is just such a beautiful looking, and sounding guitar !
Since I've gone to .10s on both, the sound even closer than when I first received the Epiphone.
They don't sound EXACTLY the same, but the Gibson is 51 years old, so that is a factor.
THAT SAID, I virtually ALWAYS OPT for the Epiphone to play, not due to it's lower value, but the sound it more what I need in an acoustic guitar.
OBVIOUSLY, there ARE differences, but I find them to be slim. The main difference is that the Epi is brighter, and in a very good and quality sound. Now when I play lead, I don't struggle to hear my playing because it cuts through the other models of Epiphones and Martins in the room.
If I could do it over, I'd buy this same Epiphone Hummingbird, and pay twice the price, AND BUY IT FROM SWEETWATER !
THE BOTTOM LINE, I now choose the Epiphone, ALWAYS ! PLUS IT HAS PICKUPS ONBOARD ! Out go the days of using a pickup taped inside the sound hole, damaging the finish in that area, or struggling with a microphone.
*I HAVE SWITCHED TO SWEETWATER FOR ALL MY NEEDS: GUITARS, AMPLIFIERS, STRINGS, POLISH, ECT*
I can't thank Sweetwater enough for NOW supplying me with ALL my musical needs !!!
AND THANK YOU KEITH RICHARDS FOR BRINGING THE HUMMINGBIRD TO FOLK ROCK MUSIC AND HELPING ME DECIDE TO CONTINUE TO PLAY HUMMINGBIRDS. (SYMPATHYS DUE TO CHARLIE WATTS).
THANK YOU SWEETWATER AGAIN, AND I WILL BE BUYING MORE ITEMS FROM YOU *THIS WEEK*,

High Recommend Sweetwater

By David Marble from Mesa Arizona on June 24, 2021 Music Background: Intermediate

My Epiphone hummingbird pro is the best guitar I could get for the money I spent. Sweetwater was very knowledgeable and helpful with my purchase. My Hummingbird was playable right out of the box. No setup was needed. I would recommend Sweetwater to everyone.

Great Value

By Russell Spees on June 22, 2021

I bought oneof these a year ago! This Epiphone guitar is a great knock off, of the Gibson! I remember when Gibson came out with the Hummingbird & I first saw it! What a piece of art work & musical instrument, all in one!

Unbelievable Value

By Sweetwater Customer on June 5, 2021

I really wasn't expecting all that much .... Maybe a backup guitar or something I could take to the beach without having to worry too much. What I received was an incredible guitar for the money. The finish and overall appearance was flawless. The sunburst was as nice as any that I had ever seen. The neck feels great and the action is great. It sounds very nice, but doesn't have the "boom" of a typical dreadnought, but hey for this price what do you want? Otherwise this is a guitar I would feel very comfortable gigging with as well as just noodling around on. I have been playing for 35 years and have never seen a better guitar in this price range.

Wonderful

By Sweetwater Customer on January 3, 2021

This is absolutely great. It showed up without any damage to the instrument and it plays beautifully. Absolutely nothing wrong with this guitar.

Not a Gibson but its still amazing!

By Steven Scott from USA on December 29, 2020 Music Background: Producer. Sound engineer. Musician

I love Epiphone. Ive owned this guitar for 5 years so mines a rosewood neck. But after all this time the wood has really aged well. Plays and sounds better now, i do take very good care of it, and still looks amazing! The grover tuners are perfect, the hidden pickup and eq controls work excellent, changing batteries could be easier, but i cant complain. It sound like a hummingbird should. Ive played the Gibsons before and the Epiphone holds up well against its bigger brother. I recommend getting one. You will sound like all your hummingbird heroes

Highly recommended!

By Brian from Palm Springs, CA on September 16, 2020 Music Background: Beginner guitar player

I am a beginner in my fifth month of lessons and the Epi Hummingbird Pro is the fourth guitar that I have purchased. For the 4th I shopped and tried acoustic electrics from two other well known and respected brands. Both were returned as neither of them had the comfort or rich sound that I was looking for. I love learning on this guitar! On top of that the guitar is simply beautiful, the quality and finish is amazing and at this price point! Lastly, this is the first product that I have purchased from Sweetwater and I will not be buying from ANY other sources, online or otherwise in the future. There are businesses that simply "get it", they cover all the bases and just do it right. That's Sweetwater in a nutshell.

Hummingbird Pro-As Sweet as it Sounds

By Stoney Richards from Pennsylvania on September 1, 2020 Music Background: Singer/songwriter

I ordered my Epiphone Hummingbird Pro after a long search based on the best price I could find from Sweetwater. First impressions are the key here and the folks took good care of me with answers to all my questions. The guitar came in a day after ordering packed efficiently and professionally. We could have gone on a world tour with the way the instrument was packed. Bravo. The guitar itself is sweet indeed. It plays like a charm, feels good on my fingers and the sound is exactly what anybody'd want from a good guitar.Picking, strumming, jamming, it's a classic with a fine history. To make your purchase even better buy one from the team at Sweetwater

Hard to Beat at This Price

By Aaron from Kentucky on July 22, 2020 Music Background: 10 Years

Great acoustic for the price.
I've been playing over 10 years, and have played in several bands in the rock and metal scenes.
However, now that I'm more of an at home musician, I wanted to change up my sound.
I read a few mixed reviews online of his guitar, so I was a little scared at first. However, I opted for a set up on mine when I ordered, and it was worth every penny.
This is now one of the best playing acoustics I have had.
Sound wise, its pretty good. It's not going to blow away many $1000+ guitars, but you're also not paying that much for it. It's got a deep sound that carries well.
I bought it to learn some outlaw country on, and it gets pretty close to that sound.
The fishman electronics sound good plugged into a powered speaker system.

Overall, it gets the job done well, and it's a good value.
Don't sweat the name on the headstock, Epiphone did well on this model.

Love my Hummingbird

By GDub from Florida on July 8, 2020 Music Background: Long time average player

I already had a Martin but wanted to keep that in DADGAD tuning, so looked for a relatively cheap basic acoustic to play in standard tuning. Found the Epiphone Hummingbird at Sweetwater (the only ones to buy from online, in my opinion), and took a chance. I have not been disappointed. Does it sound as good as my Martin? No, of course not, but then the Martin is substantially more expensive. But this one plugs into my amps, and it sounds pretty good both unplugged and electric. If I were playing live in front of an audience I would use a good mike/PA system rather than the onboard electronics, but for playing at home this is absolutely golden. I was also sold on this based on a review I had found suggesting that this guitar is good for someone who is used to playing electrics, as it has a similar narrow neck. Sure enough, the action is low like an electric, and the neck doesn't feel all that different from a Les Paul or Strat, so there's no need to 'get used to it.' Plus, the playing is easy and forgiving and doesn't tear up your left hand like some acoustics do. Most importantly, this thing came in tune, and it stays in tune - note that a really expensive out of tune guitar sounds like absolute crap, whereas a sub-$400 guitar that holds its tuning sounds absolutely awesome. And what really got me was the look - this guitar is beautiful (I added a couple of Hummingbird decals I found on Amazon - I know, pretty tacky, but I wanted to personalize it and love the Hummingbird theme).

Best sub $500 guitar out there

By ALAN BELVILLE from LEROY MICHIGAN on June 8, 2020 Music Background: Played in bands, taught guitar, and now just small venues.

What an exceptional value! Thanks much to Sweetwater and Alden Debee the sales engineer for giving me an outstanding deal for the Hummingbird and demo case. Just love it! Folks – where else can you view the instrument you want, in detail, and also have the confidence that it has been inspected thoroughly? That's why I only shop through Sweetwater (Gibson LP, sound system, amps, and now this wonderful Hummingbird.)

Now a little about the Guitar I just bought. The finish is incredible – perfect. The action, so perfect. The tone – crazy good. I always liked the way they sounded when playing at the local music shops, but this particular one is awesome. The Hummingbird was originally built by Gibson to be a less boomy but well balance instrument with sweet mids and highs, and ample but defined bass. This Epiphone Hummingbird has accomplished this great tonal package.

I remember when the Epiphone version went from 25.5" scaled to the 24.7" scale it now has with its newer version "Epiphone Humiming Bird Pro". At that point, I'd starting really wanting one. The other day I was browsing them in Sweetwater's page and saw that they had moved the EQ controls from outside top bout, to the sound hole. (that's just my personal preference) TRIGGER PULLED! Alden fixed me up as always. Don't hesitate folks, I know many of you out there have been wanting one – Order here and NO WORRIES.

Love it !

By Tim Wardill from Bahamas on September 27, 2019 Music Background: Ungifted amateur

I have the top end Martin stuff but needed a working guitar for overseas travel, one I wouldn't mind getting the odd bash in transit. However..... now I have it here I'm not sure that I am very keen on it getting 'bashed' at all ! For the price I am blown away with this guitar. It looks great, sounds great on its own, but plugged in to an acoustic amp it sounds fantastic. I had specifically asked Mark at Sweetwater to ensure mine had a low action. No problems there, just a delight to play. I'm not sure how Epiphone can turn out a guitar of this quality at he price, but I simply couldn't recommend it highly enough. Can't keep my hands off it !

Surprising value for the price

By Lloyd H Durham from NC on July 16, 2019 Music Background: Playing over 50 years various genres and styles

This guitar is a very nice surprise. It is not only a real head-turner with the beautiful colors but it sounds better than I expected a guitar in this price range could. It has a deep rich sound, has great projection, great sustain, and a lively fast action. The note articulation is clear and distinct. I am very pleased with it and highly recommend it. For someone wanting a quality acoustic but doesn't have the funds to buy an expensive model I suggest you give this one a serious look. Again I want to thank James and the Sweetwater team for the excellent service. It's the reason I do all my business with Sweetwater.

The action was set well right out of the box, I did have to make a neck adjustment a few days later but that is to be expected in this weather. The finish is beautiful, looks just like the photos. As always the service from Sweetwater is the best.

Really Happy

By Ron Cole from Kansas on April 1, 2018 Music Background: Amature

I played 40 years ago, decided to take it up again. Bought a Gibson Maestro from everybodys favorite store (Walmart). It plays ok but I wanted something better. Wow Daniel at SWEETWATER was great, I chose the Epiphone Hummingbird on looks and all of the excellent reviews. Wasn't wrong got it two days after shipping, as everyone says played right out of the box, I can not find one flaw in appearance or tone . Thanks Sweetwater for a great product and excellent service I will be ordering more soon.

I’m impressed

By Darryl from Douglasville on March 17, 2018

I had been looking for a new guitar for weeks and the Sweetwater ads kept popping up and finally I decided to take the plunge. Sweetwater was awesome, great customer service before and after the deal. Hummingbird Pro arrived very well packed in perfect condition and ready to play right out of the box. Actually looking forward to purchase from Sweetwater again.

Perfect!

By Jeff from Muscle Shoals on December 8, 2017

I am the owner of a couple of Gibson acoustics, as well as a few Gibson Les Pauls. I purchased this guitar for my son as a Christmas gift and I was blown away when I removed it from the box. It was perfect! Not a scratch or a scar on it. The binding looks very sharp. Low action out of the box. And the nitro finish is just spectacular. I am wanting one now for myself. Thanks Sweetwater!!

Beautiful Guitar

By DrStephen from Bridgewater, NJ on November 25, 2017 Music Background: Intermediate level. Hobbyist.

This guitar is not only beautiful and well made! It sounds fantastic and is a joy to play! Setup very well out of the box by Sweetwater. I was wondering how it would sound knowing the sides and back are laminate. But not to worry this guitar sounds fantastic!! Pick up and electronics sound good even through my Blackstar- but will need to get proper acoustic amp in the future. This guitar is slightly brighter than my two other Takamine's- the contrast is nice. Anyway most certainly this guitar will play in over time and continue to develope in tone. I love it. Great value. I'm an intermediate level player and feel I have plenty of room to grow into this guitar. Buy one you will love it!

Epiphone Hummingbird Pro acoustic guitar

For the price, this guitar more than exceeded my expectations. It arrived perfectly set up and ready to play. I'm very pleased with this guitar. This is not my only guitar. I have a Martin acoustic guitar that is six times the price of this one and a JTV 69 modeling electric guitar. For an affordable price, this one is a bargin.

Epiphone Hummingbird Pro

By Douglas Erhard from Lomita, CA on March 30, 2017 Music Background: 50 years of experience

This is an outstanding acoustic guitar, especially for the money. Not only is it beautiful to look at, the sound is incredible both acoustically and amplified. I have been playing for 50 years, and have played Gibson, Fender, Martin, Ovation, etc... In my opinion, this guitar sounds as well as any high end guitar costing hundreds or thousands more.

Out of the box, the guitar was tuned and ready to play. The action is low, and the neck to me, is quite similar to my 335. (I am primarily an electric player and have some great guitars like. Telecaster AJ-90, Rickenbacker 360, and a Gibson 335). I did however change the stock strings to a set of Martin extra lights. now this guitar really sings. The sound is full and sweet. You can't miss with this guitar! This is a great addition to my collection and I can't wait to show it off at our next gig.

Sweet guitar for the price. If considering purchase of a higher end guitar and enjoy the sound and feel of a Gibson, give this one a strum first. The more I play her, the sweeter she is.

Great guitar

By Sweetwater Customer from San Diego on February 26, 2017

I love this guitar. I am a beginner and started out with cheap six string acoustic from GC. It was adequate for my level of play, but I wanted to something a little better. This one delivered. Other than being gorgeous, Sweetwater sent it to me all ready to go out of the box. ever since getting this one I have played longer and been able to learn faster. It has a great sound that is clear and crisp. The tapered neck is also great for allowing my fingers to reach the frets more easily. Like I said earlier I am new to playing the guitar and really cant tell some one much about the technical specs on this guitar. What I can say is that I really enjoy playing this guitar and have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of learning on this one. Plus Sweetwater's customer service was second to none. This purchase has made me a fan of Epiphone and Sweetwater.

I needed a guitar to play with a couple of my friends in his garage, so I went and tested a bunch of inexpensive but nice sounding guitars. The salesperson asked me to try the Hummingbird Pro, I couldn't believe that a $300 guitar could sound so good. Out of the box the guitar was exactly what I was looking for, low action very easy to play, nice to solo with no fret buzz on any fret, I tested it over and over up and down the fretboard. The Grover tuners are great it stays in tune, I absolutely love this guitar, I can't put it down.

I have owned this guitar for about a year and, it has performed flawlessly perfect. It has pleased me so much that I have sold 2 Seagull guitars 1 Takamine 1 Ovation just because they could not compare in sound and, playability with this Hummingbird Pro! I knew that I wouldn't play them anymore so they went Bye Bye. This is just a superb guitar in every way. I would purchase another one in a heartbeat! It truly is a beautiful looking instrument. The pictures here on Sweetwater are pretty darned good but, you really need to see it in person!

Great guitar

By James Dyke jr. from Missoula,MT on November 22, 2016 Music Background: Long time pro-musician

The Epiphone Hummingbird pro is a great guitar in its own right. I have Martins and this guitar is somewhat brighter in tone which is what I like for live performance because I play finger style. The construction and finish are perfect, I have not found a single flaw. The onboard electronics work quite well, the bass end maybe a little overbearing but not something that can't be dealt with easily. It is well worth the coin you will drop for this guitar.

This was an amazing buy, I got a lot more bang for my buck as far as sound and playability go's it stays in tune and when plugged into an accoustic amp one I purchased from Sweetwater a couple years ago I might mention it has an even better sound on all realms the highs and the lows and it even sounds pretty wild when paired with behringer metal dust. Peddle just for kicks

Amazing value

By Jeremy from Bellingham on November 15, 2015 Music Background: 30 years playing currently a rhythm guitarist / lead vocalist in a gigging band

I have had my eye on this guitar for a couple of years. I got mine yesterday and it was perfect, and arrived a couple of days early. It has a beautiful finish and looks like the Gibson. The differences are of course the price, and from what I can gather, place of manufacture, the wood quality, the inlays, the pick ups and the bracing. Well that is over $2 k, and yes if you have the money, I can fully understand the investment on the Gibson.
My other guitars are a Martin DS1 (all sapelle wood), USA strat, Epi Les Paul 60s tribute, and a Epi Sheraton. I have had them all professionally set up and fret work done where necessary. This guitar does not look like it needs a set up, but I will probably take it in a see nevertheless.

Okay, this guitar plays so beautifully. I love the neck and fingering / fretting notes is very clean and easy, which reduces fret buzz. Its sustain is off the charts and then I plugged it into my Vox amp... cant wait for band rehersal it will be perfect, nice pre amp, controls are very well thought out.

I have owned and played many guitars over the past 30 years playing. Some nice, some expensive, some meh. We all have our opinions of what we think sounds good and that really is the bottom line, how does it sound to you? Take away the label and the snobbery and that is all that matters.

I will say that this is honestly one of the best sounding acoustic guitars I have ever heard or played. That
after 24 hours of owning it. Yes, I really know quickly if a guitar is one I like or not. For $299 bucks I do not understand how this guitar makes money for Epiphone. This is just my opinion, but after reading the other comments I can see many people have the same reaction.

This is an excellent instrument, especially for the price. The materials are nice and the finish really pops. Really the guitar looks like it should cost more than it does. It has a nice tone and it has great playability, i.e. the neck feels good, the action is right, etc. Based on this purchase I will likely purchase another Epiphone again; and as usual, from Sweetwater.com. As always my sales associate called me and worked with me, I received impeccable customer service, and I received the guitar almost immediately.

Got it right out of the box and it played great. I knew it was newly made so I just hung it on my wall for 3 months and let it adapt. Took it down and adjusted the neck and played. It plays like a dream! Really a fantastic Guitar for the money. It has been several months now and it is VERY close to a Gibson costing several times more. Great woods, finish and sound! Great pickups/electronics as well. Plays and adjust good for live music at Church.

A fine high-quality instrument, with smooth sweet brassy highlights in tone, and spectacular workmanship throughout. It complements my wonderful old trusty Advanced Jumbo 220SCE, also by Epiphone. Earned $ on a gig with my Hummingbird the first full day I had it! I lowered the saddle slightly on the treble side, and the straight neck and profoundly even fretwork by Epiphone allow super low action free of buzzings. With Xlite gauge D'Addario phosphor bronze strings, it is a lyrical gem for jazzy fingerpicking styles, for any kind of substantial music. Folks actually gasp with delight when the see and here the Hummingbird. And Patrick Cobley of Sweetwater, a pro sound engineer, is the best salesman I've found anywhere!

Beautiful Guitar

By Andy from NE on September 8, 2014 Music Background: Guitar player and gigging semi-pro musician for 30+ years

Like many, I've always pined for an actual Gibson Hummingbird, but I've never been in that tax bracket, and likely never will be. However, I am a fan of finding excellent, giggable budget-priced guitars. Well, I saw the 0% financing for two years offer, asked the boss (wife) for approval, and about a week later my Hummingbird arrived.

First, this is an absolutely beautiful guitar. The cherryburst is flawless, the binding is mostly perfect except for some slight stain smudges here and there, and, really, the only flaw I can find is a tiny unfinished spot where the neck touches the soundhole. The mahogany of the back and sides is gorgeous, and the grain of the spruce top is beautiful.

I love the neck. I primarily play Fenders, so the "slim taper D" designation didn't mean much to me, but to me it's a fairly chunky D, sort of like a 70s strat or tele, but maybe slightly wider. Regardless, I don't have huge hands, but I like a neck with some heft, and this one is just about perfect. It's probably my favorite guitar neck now. The tuners are Grovers and are extremely smooth and steady. The frets and inlays are excellent - no sloppy craftsmanship, and I haven't encountered any high/low fret issues.

This thing plays like a dream. I really couldn't be happier with the action out of the box. I did swap in a tusq saddle, and shaved it down to the point that the action is slightly higher than out of the box, but that's just because I ran out of time for my project and needed to get some strings back on the thing. The action is still great, and I'm not sure if I'm going to try to lower it at the next string change or not.

Tone-wise, this guitar has good volume and is very sensitive to how and where you pick the strings. I tend to strum or pluck the strings toward the bridge side of the soundhole, and I find the tone to be very balanced. It's not the warmest guitar you'll ever hear, but that will improve with age, but it also sounds like a much more expensive guitar. It has a lot of sparkle and decent midrange output, so it's not overly bright and it's not boomy at all. It just sounds great, either strummed or fingerpicked.

The intonation has been good. Initially it was slightly off on the Low E and B strings, but it also arrived during a July with extremely up and down weather. It's now settled down and is just about perfect. I've always found that acoustic guitars need to settle for at least a couple of months before worrying about the intonation (unless it's really off).

The pickup sounds fine. Piezos always have limitations - this one is no better or worse than the many others I've heard. It has good EQ adjustability, so you can get just about any sound you'd like.

Overall, I love this guitar and it's truly a steal for $300. It plays and sounds like a much more expensive guitar. I can't put it down. It's endless fun to play. That's the whole point, isn't it?

This shouldn't be compared to a $3000 Gibson, and saying "it's better or worse" than that iconic instrument is, to me, a moot point. Enjoy this instrument for what it is, and play it proudly. I think anyone who sees, hears and plays mine would agree.

Ive had this guitar on my mind for a lone time, and then there it was, in acoustic guitar mag. [ My goal, im sure the same as a lot of poor folks like me , was to someday own a Gibson], so, i bought it! Well, i can say that i am BLOWN AWAY! I love my new Ax. This guitar is no joke, the best deal Epiphone has to offer, a steal! This is the 3rd epiphone i have bought, [ All from Sweetwater i might add ] and i must say, the best one yet. I have fallen for these epiphones, i have yet to by a pc of junk. You will not be sorry, this Hummingbird sings, and sounds Great! Right out of the box , with the strings it came with, it played and sounded stunning. Iam putting better strings on it, D,Addario EJ16 LIGHT .012-.053 phosphor bronze. These work well i find. The Shadow e-performer preamp is awsome, when i plugged it in, it was a whole new deal. The sound will suprise you. Iam happy to say this hummingbird will be with me for life. ( its my Gibson! ) And my music friends, they love it also!! I will always shoot for that chance at a Gibson, but for right now, im going to enjoy this one. THANK YOU SWEETWATER! As always, the intire buying prosses was a snap. You folks are awsome...

Great Guitar for the Price

By John Allen from Santa Cruz, CA (USA) on June 17, 2014 Music Background: Occasional Jammer

I am somewhere between a beginner and intermediate guitar player (probably closer to beginner) and own an Epiphone Les Paul electric guitar that I just love the look and feel of. Recently, I've been learning some songs on the acoustic so that I can play along with my wife, who is just getting started as a beginner. So I wanted to get an acoustic/electric that I can play along with my wife, but also plug into an amp and play with some guys who I've been getting together with to jam a little bit recently, playing mostly bluesy stuff. So I picked the Epiphone Hummingbird because, first of all, I love my Epiphone electric, but also because the sunburst design kinda matches the design of my electric. The reviews also say that it's a pretty good guitar for the price and I don't need a $2,000 guitar just yet. So far, I'm fully satisfied with my purchase.

The only hiccup in the road was that the first guitar that was sent to me was damaged in shipping. I contacted Sweetwater right away and they sent out a replacement the following day, along with a waybill to return the damaged guitar. That's the kind of customer service that will bring me back again and again. Thanks Sweetwater!

I was amazed at the quality of this instrument. I have 11 other guitars, some of which were quite expensive. The new Hummingbird Pro is very possibly the finest guitar I've owned in my 53 year music career. No doubt, I will be selling, at least, most of my other guitars. The Hummingbird has become my #1 instrument in all my Church work & all the other programs I do in my Christian Ministry. The Epiphone Co. outdid themselves on this one. I am seriously happy with it.

Epiphone Hummingbird Pro

By Heidi from Cottonwood, AZ USA on May 7, 2013 Music Background: Picking and strumming off and on for 40+ years

This guitar not only looks beautiful, it sounds fantastic too! I own a Taylor 314 and wanted a less expensive guitar I could take with me when I travel. This guitar did not break the bank but I have definitely fallen in love with it. The action was great right out of the box, up and down the neck. The guitar sounds beautiful, especially when strummed. I have been playing this guitar as much as my Taylor since I received it and enjoy having two guitars with a completely different sound. I think the Hummingbird is actually nicer than my Taylor for accompanying my voice when singing alt-country/folk tunes. I do reach for my Taylor first when finger picking Hawaiian Slack key style. Both guitars sound nice for finger picking country blues, just different. Since I don't have an amp, I have not tried the electronics on the guitar. I looked carefully at the guitar and thought that the quality far exceeded what I would expect for the money I spent. If you are looking for a beautiful looking and sounding instrument at a reasonable price I would highly recommend this guitar. I also appreciate dealing with Sweetwater. They are a great company to do business with.

Awesome Guitar Folks

I agree with my fellow Hummingbird fans, this guitar is awesome sounding and really beautiful to look at. I especially like it plugged into my Fishman LoudBox and run through my Zoom A2 Acoustic Guitar Pedal. My wife wants it and says the Hummingbird makes it more of a ladies guitar, but I disagree. I told her when I finally buy my dream Taylor guitar I would think about giving it to her, but for now it's all mine!

Great guitar for the price. Accoustic tone is nice and I am really impressed with the sound plugged in. Pretty looking thing too.

Excellent guitar, especially for the price.

By Kyle from NC on December 5, 2023

I did not set out to purchase this Hummingbird. I already have a Martin HD-28 and a Taylor 214ce that I use for gigging. The reason I got this is because I found an insane deal locally that I couldn't pass up. That said, this will likely not be my last Epiphone. My goodness, the playability right out of the box was superb. Yes I changed the strings and conditioned the fretboard because who knows how long it sat at the dealer (it has a 2022 serial number and I'm writing this Nov. '23) but the action was very nice. Sure, the frets needed a polish and the ends needed a very minor touch up but after that, she's singing beautifully. At this price point, to have a solid spruce top and Fishman electronics is insane. Fit and finish were pretty dang decent and it has Grover tuners. It surely won't replace my Martin or Taylor but that's not the niche of this guitar. If you're beginning to play, you're seasoned and need a spare, or you just always wanted a Hummingbird but don't want the Gibson price tag, this is a no brainer. Perfect compliment to the Hummingbird ukulele I got my daughter for Christmas. And this guitar will be hers when she grows into it. I'm floored.

After watching the same Youtube videos a thousand times and chatting with Ian, my salesperson, I settled on the Hummingbird and could not be happier. Sweetwater did a great job with the setup and it arrived in perfect condition. After two weeks, it sounds even better. Better than expected... plays great sounds GREAT. The only issue ( but if you do your research you'll expect this ) is the Endpin almost imposable to get a ( standard size) strap on it, I didn't think it would be as bad as it is. Is it a deal breaker No, but you would think they could machine the button part of the endcap to fit a strap. That's only reason I wont give it 5 stars...

Eppirphone Hummingbird Review

By Bruce H from Hamton Roads on January 18, 2017 Music Background: Rock & Roll / Church

I have a hard time paying 4K for Gibson Hummingbird. My friend's father had one when I was growing-up and it sounded great, but my Martin D28 still is significantly better My wife ordered this for a Christmas present. It arrived and I let it set in the box for week before it was opened. The set-up was good, but I adjusted just a bit and replaced the strings with D'Addario EXP16 Coated Phosphor Bronze Light Acoustic then I played them for a couple of days and replaced them with Martin Extra Light.

The finish is great and was well buffed. It sounds better with the Martin Strings instead of the D'Addario strings. The intonation is on the money. For a just mfg. guitar I am surprised. The sound is well balanced, the mid-tones are slightly higher than I like, but that will improve with age. The electronics are not the best but running thru my Fender Acoustic Amp , I can tweak it so it sound ok.

It is a great guitar, I will change the nut and saddle, that will also improve the sound.

For a $ guitar u can not go wrong.

Additionally, I can not say enough about the shipping packaging , the 55 step guitar process prior to shipping and the great customer service from Sweetwater. I will keep the guitar and will play it regularly.

I have been playing my new bird for almost two weeks now. I love the country twang and how easy it is to bend and slide notes. I don't like the plastic nut, bridge saddle and bridge pins. The Gibson bird uses a bone nut, Tusq compensated saddle and I don't know what they use for bridge pins.

If Gibson uses them in a $3k guitar, I think I will try it on my hummer Jr.

That should be a minor retrofit. So why do it you ask ? Tone Baby Tone.

By Sweetwater Customer on August 20, 2015

This is a great guitar for the price. It looks great and it plays well too. The action is really good. Mine has no fret buzz and i even put lighter gage strings on it. It has some nice features at this price point. Would have been nice if they had included the tuner on the preamp but at this price I guess you cant have everything. Fits well in the epiphone edred case so I highly recommend that . and sweetwter has the best service ever, they go out of their way to make you happy every time. Hooked on SweetWater

By James Honea from El Paso, TX on September 9, 2014 Music Background: Hobbyist

Just finished inspecting my new Hummingbird and put it through its paces. I couldn't be more pleased. If you've ever been afraid to buy a 'Made in China' instrument, don't be. Sweetwater's 55 step setup insures you'll get all the instrument is capable of right out of the box. I bought a Gretsch form another company, I had to change tuners and do a major setup to get that playable If you want an acoustic/electric this will fill just about any need you have, this is your baby.. Nice tone and easy to play. No hum, buzz or any problems acoustic or plugged in.

Everybody claims great customer service, Sweetwater delivers on every order. Chris McCown has always called to let me know my order was being processed. You'll get a call and or an e-mail keeping you advised of status. Even for just a set of strings! The little bag of candy packed with your purchase is a nice touch.

Epiphone hummingbird pro

By Charles Amidon from Downing town Pa on August 16, 2013 Music Background: Gigging musician

I am very happy with my purchase I bought the guitar and case and they are both stunning. I honestly bought this as a vacation guitar bang around on the deck, but the more I play it the more I like the balanced tone nice playability and feel. I realize this is a 400.00 dollar purchase...... I own a vintage Martin and J-45 but you know what this thing plays, records and sounds really nice to my ears. It puts a smile on my face. I am also pleased with the electronics which sound very full through my Bose acoustic PA. I hope this is helpful.

Epiphone Hummingbird Pro

By Scott from Michigan USA on April 24, 2013 Music Background: 22 years of playing guitar. At home couch player

This is a great guitar for the money hell it's a great guitar for even twice the money, but don't tell Epiphone that. This guitar plays great up and down the neck with a great tone. The finish on the Hummingbird is very nice, but the electronics blew me away through my Vox aga70 acoustic amp. This is my first time dealing with Sweetwater and not my last these guys were great. They even called me to let me know they were shipping it out the same day I ordered it. I had it in 2 days with free shipping even.

It's okay

By Douglas Bishop from Farmington, MO on November 30, 2022

I received this on the same day as my new Martin D35 (long story) but this sounds and feels lifeless in comparison. I think it's a decent value for the price and sounds decent.

Very nice but flawed

By marvin miller from Wisconsin on November 16, 2022

The Hummingbird Pro {studio} Faded Cherry Sunburst is a very nice sounding guitar, the action on it is great. But theres one little flaw the electronics on the inside is great except where you hook your battery, just dangels on a wire without a way to secure the battery it just flops around while you play.Easy fix I just secured the battery with some velcro. Have a nice day.

Epiphone Hummingbird

By John on July 13, 2022

Guitar is a beauty. Excellent finish and trim Sounds great and stays in tune. Workmanship is excellent.
Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, is the battery is inside the sound hole in a Velcro bag. Have to completely loosen top 3 strings to get at it. Also volume and tone control are inside sound hole too. Terrible really dumb idea.

Worth the price

By Jim Saulino from Lorain, Ohio on November 5, 2021 Music Background: Experienced player and theory background. Not a professional

This is one of a dozen guitars I own. It's set up well and didn't need to do anything to it. I am not crazy about the pickup system but it is adequate.

Gift to Key West busker friend

By Dan from Finger Lakes on January 4, 2019 Music Background: Blues/Rock/Hard Rock

I recently bought one of these for my friend who busks on the streets of Key West who is struggling to keep his head above water, & his current axe is falling apart from the humidity & heat from the last two years, so this review is a bit 2nd hand. He reports that the neck has needed to be adjusted a number of times over the last month, but seems to be settling finally, more or less. I'm sure it's due to a combination of being a new guitar & being in that climate, I'm hoping for the best. Also, fret size was smaller than expected, but very comfortable to play. Acoustically, sounds great & tunes/intonates nicely. Broke a few strings in the first few weeks, but he is a bit heavy handed trying to be heard above the street noise. Hasn't plugged in yet, so no amplified tone report. Overall, beautifully made guitar, great playability, especially for the price. Great service from Sweetwater! Will update in a few months.

Take Your Hummingbird Pro to Next Level

By Alan E. Beckworth from Bartlesville, Ok on November 18, 2017 Music Background: 50 year Heavy hobbiest/ performer

I have owned/played my Hummingbird for approximately two years now. I thought I would share this little tidbit with any who care to read it. Taking the guitar to the next level is as simple as putting a set of Elixir Nano Web strings on it. I opted to play the medium/light combo strings (bass strings are medium, giving more punch and projection playing unplugged. The light strings really ring out the tone of this superb instrument). I was really stunned by the increased quality of sound these strings caused on my Hummingbird Pro. This guitar has been manufactured with high quality materials and it just gets better and better as I play it. I use the guitar indoors, and outdoors and it adapts to most environments with pleasing sound and great projection. This guitar gets played approximately 20 hours per week and after over 2000 hours of play time and countless string changes the bridge and nut are still holding up, the keys are still rock solid and smooth, and the finish still dazzles under the stage lights. The neck is still right on and the action is still comfortable. This Hummingbird Pro is a great hard working instrument. Well worth the money Epiphone asks for it.

New Hummingbird

This guitar sounds great and the build quality is very good. It is hard for me to understand why anyone would pay 10 times as much for the Gibson. Glad I made this choice

Great budget guitar

By Carl from Lewisville, TX on August 19, 2015

First off, my rep Skylar has been one of the best reps I've had for any service related industry, and has sold me on Sweetwater customer service. I will be a Sweetwater customer for the foreseeable future. Everything you've heard about Sweetwater is very true, which is not always the case with the interwebz.

That being said, this is a pretty good guitar, but not a perfect guitar. It came fast, well packed, and had almost a perfect (for me) setup. The frets were a little on the dull and "scratchy" side and needed a good polishing before they were bend worthy, but I don't expect a retailer to go that far for free (I work on my own guitars and know what it takes to do fret work and setup guitars...they exceeded my expectations). Outside of that, the setup was ideal, minimal relief (just enough) and low action for an acoustic (3/32" on bass side and 1/16" on treble side at 12th fret). However nut action still needs some tweaking, but it's not bad by any means. This is one of the best out of the box setups I've seen, especially compared to "brick and mortar" stores I've visited and purchased from (hint hint). It could still use some tweaking depending on your playing style and preference, but it's very very playable out of the box. If you're a beginner that hasn't yet developed particular needs/preferences, you're good to go.

This is a beautiful guitar that sounds pretty good acoustically, but not great. Plug it in, though, and it really seems to shine. I don't believe the preamp to be flat at neutral settings. Played acoustically, the bass is there but can be lacking compared to other similar guitars, and it is a touch "boxy" sounding and not too terribly loud. Mids seem to be accentuated, treble a little laid back, and volume not that great. However, plug it in and it opens up very nicely and the bass is actually TOO much (played through a Fishman Loudbox Mini at neutral settings), and needs to be turned down. Boost the treble a bit, cut the bass a lot, and adjust the "dynamics" (aka mids) to your liking, and this thing really opens up and sounds nothing like it does acoustically. This is a guitar that needs to be plugged in to sound awesome. Maybe that's just the "Gibson/Epiphone acoustic sound", but I'm not a huge fan. Acoustically it's pretty generic compared to other guitars. It reminds me of my old Yamaha FGX700SC which is basically an electric FG700S...sounds very similar and in the same price bracket.

Skylar recommended the Taylor 114e after expressing my thoughts on the Hummingbird, and boy was she dead on. If you can afford it, or you're looking to upgrade, I'd recommend the Taylor 114e for sure. Acoustically, the bass is much better, overall not nearly as boxy sounding, the treble is much more pronounced, volume is quite a bit louder given the same strum, and overall quality of sound (and build) is much better. That all being said, when plugged in, they are pretty similar guitars when EQ'd. Actually I'd venture to say the Hummingbird sounds a tad better plugged in. The Hummingbird has a much better control layout and much more control on the guitar itself than the Taylor, which only has a simple treble, bass, and volume controls, and a small switch for phase on the electronics inside the sound hole (really Taylor???). This reason alone is why I've (mostly) decided to keep the Epiphone. It lacks acoustically compared to other offerings, but plugged in it's a whole different ball game. It's still up in the air, but I don't see me sending it back at this time. Plus it's purty lol. However, I will definitely keep the Taylor 114e as well. It's a much better acoustic guitar.

That all being said, this is a great entry level guitar, and it's hard to beat for the money. If all you have is $300 I wouldn't hesitate recommending this guitar at all. Compared to other offerings in this price bracket (of which I've demo'd A LOT), it is at least on par and seems to excel in certain areas. Given the choice, I would choose this over my old Yamaha. However, if you have some extra dough you're willing to dish out take a look at Martin and Taylor's "entry level" full size offerings (their entry level is mid-high end on the overall spectrum unless you're filthy rich)...they're quite a bit better and incredible bang for the buck.

Remember when it comes to acoustics, you get what you pay for. They're not nearly as tweakable and upgradeable as full on electric guitars, which are much more easily upgraded and customized.

Great guitar for the money!

By Greg from California on July 2, 2014 Music Background: intermediate guitarist

I couldn't give it 5 stars because it is not a Gibson. It is a good quality, great sounding and easy to play guitar. I did have to lower the action and I put some lighter strings on it. I also installed a Tusq saddle and replaced the bridge pins with Martin bridge pins for a better tone from the guitar. I will next replace the nut with a Tusq nut next time I change strings. These changes are very minimal in cost and will make the guitar better sounding. Well worth it. I play mostly finger style but when this guitar is strummed it is loud and beautiful sounding. It also sounds great plugged in. I do wish it had an on board tuner. Overall, this is a great guitar for $300.00.

Great guitar for the money

By Chris from Los Angeles, CA on April 28, 2013 Music Background: Been playing a few years as hobby.

Great feel, good tone and really nice finish.

However, when I got the guitar, the strings were already digging into the plastic saddle it came with. So I replaced the plastic nut, saddle, and bridge pins with a set made of bone. That was a big improvement. I would recommend that to anyone buying this guitar because the ones it comes with are super cheapos. I also put some tension on the truss rod to get the action right and changed the strings.

After a few tweaks it plays really nice and sounds good, but it's also just a baby. It still smells like glue inside. I'm sure in five or ten years once it's aged and opened up it will sound great. No problem, I plan to keep it a long time. This was a great deal for the price.

GREAT GUITAR FOR THE MONEY

By Sweetwater Customer on October 13, 2021

THIS IS A VERY NICE GUITAR .... GOOD TONE, GREAT LOOKS, NICE FEEL .... I USE IT AS A BACKUP.

Looks nice I wonder how it plays and if it stays in tune?

By Jeff s. from 54935 on November 30, 2022 Music Background: 50 years playing bluegrass and country.

Very nice looking guitar but does it stay in tune, cause the dx martin does not had to adjust the truss multiple times so far not my idea of a good guitar. I have always loved the looks of a gibson humming bird. Even the epiphone looks nice.

Weak bass

By michael pohlers from TX on September 18, 2019

...it sounded "ok" on the regular amp and I thought it would sound a lot better through my pa, well after bringing it home and hooking it up I thought the bass was very weak, the mids and highs were fine, I didn't realize how flat it sounded until I compared it to my fiends Fender CD-140SCE Cutaway , wow,BIG difference, beautiful sound amped or acoustic, the next day I took the hummingbird back and got that fender, mine was all mahogany. The fender has a better finish, way better sound acoustically, way better amped bass, the hummingbird did have better machines and lower, easier action,I liked that. So... I got a better all around guitar,AND a surprisingly good case, way better than I though it would be. Before you buy the hummingbird, just try the Fender CD-140SCE Cutaway , I'm super happy.

Room to grow

By Adam from Chicago/Evanston on October 17, 2022 Music Background: Amateur, home studio, SoundCloud, small venues.

I really wanted to love this guitar. It looks so badass imho! But, the sound just fell short… very short of the quality I was looking for. The string action was so close to the fret board that it sounded like a rattle with no hum. I'd suggest investing in a seagull or Martin instead. You will love yourself for it years down the road.

Ok for a cheap guitar but it is a cheap guitar not that good

Disapointed

By Tommy Hunt (picker49) from Corinth, Miss. on December 12, 2015 Music Background: semi-pro entertainer

I first bought the cherry colored & was overjoyed, but during my 5th. performance the endpin jack came loose & slipped out a half inch & shorted out. Epiphone would not send me a jack so I traded it back to Sweetwater for an EJ200. I later bought another hummingbird in ebony, but it had the same problem plus it came with 2 different kinds of bridgepins in it. Epiphone sent me a new set of pins, but I discovered two of the pinholes had been drilled crooked. I "pawnshopped" it so I lost money on both deals. If Epiphone would give me a good deal under circumstances, I'd get another one. This is the guitar I always wanted, but I can't afford to lose any more money on one. They are NOT being inspected like they should be.

Twisting Neck

By Tommy Hill from Hogansville, GA on April 29, 2022 Music Background: retired

I have had 2 of these guitars. With Elixir strings I loved the sound but within 7 to 10 months, the neck twists. On the last one, the truss rof could not be adjusted enough to help.

I sold the first one and sent the second back to Sweetwater. The customer service here is excellent!

Yuck. Bleh.

By Anonymous from Mississippi on June 1, 2017 Music Background: Hobbyist

Maybe I picked up the worst one of these that has ever been manufactured, but it made a terrible impression. I went to that other guitar place that has retail stores nationwide just to play this guitar. I took it down, started playing, and frowned aggressively. It's quite possibly the worst sounding guitar I've ever heard. No warmth, no brightness. Very lifeless and plastic sounding. I was shocked. My search continues...
