Best in my opinion
These strings have great tone and made ease of playing a joy. If you have never tried them you should consider doing so.
Glad they are now available for Short Scale!!
I have been experimenting lately with flat wound strings for my short scale Jaguar bass (with both P and J-style pickups). Wasn't real impressed with the sound of any flats on this particular bass UNTIL I saw someone on YouTube play a "shortie" with the regular scale Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt Flats. I was a bit hesitant to put a full scale set on my bass, but I had a set from a used bass I took delivery of last year. Managed to get them on without breakage or any other issues and I really loved the way they sounded. Lo and Behold, a fellow TalkBass member let me know Ernie Ball just released this short scale set! Logged into Sweetwater and purchased a set. Strung them up today and let me tell you, these are absolutely fantastic! I love the fact that you can still get some nice clear and crisp highs along with great mids and lows. I'll be playing these at church tomorrow.
My quest for flats started as a result of not being satisfied with the rounds I use on this bass. 3 different brands and all seem to have weird overtones that take away from the overall tone I want to come from this bass. I started on the "flatwound trek" a while back, playing nylon tapes, D'Addario Chromes, LaBella Deep Talkin Fats, etc. While they were all nice, I was really looking for brighter tones along with the solid thump of flats. These new Cobalt Short Scale Flats do the trick! I was hoping for a satisfactory sound but got so much more! Looking forward to playing these for several months and see where and how they'll settle in. If they keep anywhere near the tone they offer as new, these will be my new go-to strings! Thank you, EB!
Good strings
I replaced the round wounds on my Sterling Stingray short scale with these cobalt flats, and am very happy with them. Reviews of these I have read said they produced more high end than a lot of flats, which turned out to be true. I have my Schecter with LaBella Deep Talkin flats to give me a solid thump, and these when I want a more balanced sound. The only downside is that they had a slight sticky feeling ( also noted by other owners ), but it seems to be wearing off as I put more hours on them.
Worth it
Just slapped these on my SBMM Stingray shortie, and love them already. They do provide more mids and highs than other flats I've used, have less finger noise than rounds, and of course are easier on the fingers. Glad I bought them.
