Ernie Ball 2229 Hyper Slinky Nickel Wound Electric Guitar Strings - .008-.042 Reviews

.008-.042 Custom Gauge Electric Guitar Strings, Nickel Wound, Hyper Slinky

Ernie Ball strings have been a top choice for players of all types since the early 1960s, when guitarists came into Ernie Ball's music store, customizing their string gauges to make their axes easier to play. After fruitless attempts to interest major guitar manufacturers in a lighter set of strings, Ernie Ball decided to start making his own. When you open a pack of his strings today, you know you're getting a quality set of strings designed to give you great tone, reliable performance, and long life. You can't go wrong when you string up with Ernie Ball strings!

FINALLY !

By Jim from North Carolina on November 16, 2022 Music Background: Pro touring, studio, guitarist

Look, I play light strings. I used to "get by" using .008's, then for the last 30 years I've bought single strings or sets of .008 and .009 to make my own hybrid sets. Now I can just order the Hyper Slinky set. Thanks EB and Sweetwater.

Exactly what I was looking for.

I've been dealing with carpal tunnel flareups since 2009. That year, I went from 10-46 to 9-46 and they served me well. Cut to 2021 and the flareups began again. I could either not do the huge bends I love doing or look into lighter strings. I began to explore 8 gauge, but with that came some pretty limited choices. I used 8-38 to get me through, but felt the 3 lower strings were a tad light. I had to patiently wait for Ernie Ball to finally release the Hyper Slinky set and man, it was worth the wait! Like the 9-46 I had used before, the 8-42 is basically a "light top heavy bottom" set for those of us that use lighter gauges. 8 gauge top with 9 gauge bottom. I hope EB keeps these in production because they are perfect for me and my wilder style of playing (huge bends, tapping and lots of tremolo action).

They sound great on my main show guitars (PRS and EVH) and last a long time. I live in Texas, so most of my shows are on large outdoors stages in the summer heat. From a guy that used coated strings for ages, there's no worries on my end when I comes to these.

Really nice

I threw these on my new strat (Squier sonic HT H) and they're perfect. No problems related to low tension like buzzing on the lower strings and the upper strings are still really easy to bend. Tone is perfect as well. The strat is now my best sounding guitar when overdriven and distorted despite being one of the cheapest. I Would definitely recommend these for first time players and experienced pros.

This is Gonna Take Some Getting Used To

By Anthony Jones from AZLE, TX on December 7, 2023

Wow, I just slapped these puppies on and came here to read the reviews after playing on them a little while. I'm not sure how I feel about them yet. The first 3 strings feel really good to me, but they are so light they make the D, G, E feel heavy by comparison even though they're definitely not. I guess it's gonna take some getting used to. They also strike me as being incredibly bright. Or maybe I've just played on bad strings for so long I forgot what a new set is supposed to feel and sound like. I'll have to break them in with a few days of heavy practice and just give a neutral rating of 3 for now. But to think I almost ordered .07s--Yikes! But my intonation is real good with these. I'm surprised. I expected to have to make adjustments. My G string sounds wonderful--no more warbling wolf tones.

Rusty strings

By Sweetwater Customer on March 28, 2024

I normally have good experiences with Ernie Ball strings but unfortunately this was not one of those times. When I opened the pack the G string was very rusty and the E string was only a little bit. I used these immediately after ordering them so needless to say Im pretty disappointed. Beyond that they're fine, I love that ernie ball makes gauges that most other brands don't but I don't think I'll be ordering them again after this
