Ernie Ball 2227 Ultra Slinky Nickel Wound Electric Guitar Strings - .010-.048 Reviews

.010-.048 Custom Gauge Electric Guitar Strings, Nickel Wound, Ultra Slinky

Ernie Ball strings have been a top choice for players of all types since the early 1960s, when guitarists came into Ernie Ball’s music store, customizing their string gauges to make their axes easier to play. After fruitless attempts to interest major guitar manufacturers in a lighter set of strings, Ernie Ball decided to start making his own. When you open a pack of his strings today, you know you’re getting a quality set of strings designed to give you great tone, reliable performance, and long life. You can’t go wrong when you string up with Ernie Ball strings!

ULTRA SLINKIES: My Go-To From Day One

By Graham S. on April 10, 2024

My first time ever in a music store, I was instantly drawn to those neon packages. I grabbed a set and never looked back. I've never had issues with breaking, tuning, or playability. I love the effortless feel, dynamic tone, and iconic aesthetic! Slinkies are my ride-or-die and I'm proud to play 'em!!

This is the set I've needed

By Sweetwater Customer from Colorado on April 13, 2023 Music Background: Novice and tinkerererer

I find reg slinkys too slack on the bottom on my LP. This set solves that problem being just a little heavier on the bottoms. The "heavy bottom" set is too much for standard tuning.

Better than Regular Slinky

By Levi Salazar from Atlanta, GA on September 6, 2022

I got these strings out of curiosity and wasn't expecting much difference from regular slinky. And I'm glad I was wrong. These strings feel great and being 2 gauges thicker on the lower 3 strings does make a big acoustic and feel difference. My chords feel bigger and better. It feels like the perfect string gauge for standard tuning. My chords have so much more power behind them.

Best String Set I've ever tried

By Michael Langston from Stockton, CA on April 29, 2021 Music Background: Wannabe classical death jazz metal guitarist

These string have been the best ones I've tried so far
They are my favorite pack of strings
They're perfect for almost any tuning
With this set I managed to tune up to G standard and then down to drop A#
But I mainly play in E standard and D standard
The bass strings sound big and fat and can really take a beating
While the treble strings are nice and bendable great for lead playing
Highly recommend

FINALLY!!!

By Jonathan from Michigan on February 23, 2021 Music Background: Semi-pro

This string set solved so many of my issues. I play a wide range of music from blues to metal. I have always like the feel of 10's but sometimes when I go to drop-D, the low strings felt a bit too loose and weak. This set solves all of those issues! My high strings play easy and ring out clear, and my bottom strings are full sounding and tight. I never liked the 10-52 heavy bottom/skinny top set..... That felt like too big of a jump. This set is PERFECT if you just want a slightly beefier bottom end on a normal set of 10's.

PERFECT for 1/2 Step Down

By Dustin Benefield from Canal Winchester, OH on September 19, 2020

So I bought several of the new EB sets, experimenting to find my perfect set for a new guitar I bought. Tried these first. Now I have a bunch of extra sets of strings! Here's why: If you like having a hybrid set like 9-46 in E Standard, for bending on the plain strings and digging into your wound strings, this is pretty much the next step up, especially if you play 1/2 step down or Drop C#. These are absolutely perfect. When properly set up you can get your action plenty low with these in that tuning with the neck nearly dead straight and they will still play and feel fantastic, with no buzz. If you want to add some punch to your playing, try these. I've officially found my new usual.

"the perfect string" !!!

By matt from fort collins, co on September 10, 2020 Music Background: guitar player for 10 years and certified guitar tech

recently i switched from being a devout telecaster player to strats, guitars i've always secretly loved but haven't paid much attention to for many years. on my teles i always used the power slinky strings, and they felt great, but were waaaaay too stiff on my '95 strat plus, so i switched to hybrid slinky .09-.46. those were pretty wimpy for my ham-fisted fingers and overly-aggressive playing style so i decided to switch to these which i've used before but not too much...

there IS. perfect gauge!!

these feel great! i never really bend strings but when i do i can "get there" on the .10 half, and the .11 half is chunky enough for heavy rhythm playing and provide a noticeable difference in the low end and the comfortable tension that i missed with .11s. my only qualm is that i wish they offered 3 packs of these because i always buy those in the .10s and .11s. other than that, these are a perfect buy for anyone who is comfortable with .11s but needs a little more flexibility.

The best string gauge combo for me

By Sweetwater Customer from Chuck towne on April 19, 2020 Music Background: Hobbyists

Finally EB has made what would be my signature set if I was a famous player ha ha ha. Anyway if you're like me and jump between power slinkies, regular slinkies, and skinny top heavy bottom slinkies. Really it comes down to what guitar I'm playing but this set is what I will use probably forever. I'm actually thinking of ordering a case box pallet whatever. These are basically combo of power slinky and regular slinky. I have purchased power slinkies and skinny top heavy bottom and switched and made this ultra gauge and the burly gauge I think. Anyway I have always loved EB's and these are great as all their strings are but the gauges are ultra for me. Buy them if SW can keep them in stock. These strings are like Frosted Flakes,.....THERE GREAT!!!!

Day 1 review

By Erik from Brooklyn, NY on February 9, 2020 Music Background: Former builder at Sadowsky Guitars and hobbyist musician

So I just put these on my ESP V (25.5 scale length) tuned down a whole step to D Standard. Absolutely loving this string gauge! I had 11-50's on before and this gauge set feels perfect to me. That slight extra beef on the lower strings makes all the difference. Definitely recommend checking these out.

Ernie Ball Slinky 2227

Good Move, EB!

By Don Myers from Madison, WI on September 6, 2019 Music Background: Pro player, live and session

If you use .010 sets for electric guitar, as I have almost exclusively for (mumble, mumble) years, this set is the [stuff]! The difference the slightly-heavier low strings make is subtle, but quite real. You will realize a more muscular low end and better definition, but without having to re-intonate, tweak truss rods, or experience the uneven feel of a .010-.052 set. I put these on a semi-hollow, 24 3/4" scale, and just played for most of an hour. Lower notes of chords are throaty and more present; playability is unaffected. Well done!

Ideal strings for PRS scale length

By Rob from Louisville, KY on June 19, 2019 Music Background: Semi-Professional Musician

I play PRS guitars almost exclusively, and I've always thought 9s were too light for the 25" scale length. At the same time, the Power Slinkys were too tight in the high strings, even though I liked the bottom end chunk they provide. Enter the Ultra set—these are perfect for the 25" scale length in both Standard or Drop-D. They stay tight in the low end, and the high strings are light enough for lead work while still retaining tension. Ernie Ball hit a home run with these.

Perfect for Short-Scale Guitars

By Nate Johnson from AR on June 9, 2019 Music Background: Semi-professional

Discovered these at my local shop and had them strung up on my short-scale Mustang instead of the usual 10"s. Woah. The tightness and heft of the thicker wound strings gave me a sound like I"ve never had before, with bright, clear lead lines and thick, punchy chords that I couldn"t get from the normal 10"s. I"m a convert. These strings will be my go-to from now on for my short-scale, single-coil Mustang.

Great feel

Perfect for 1/2 step down and drop d.
Makes perfect sense for me to use these.

Ernie Ball Read My Thoughts?

By Lance from Montana on March 26, 2019 Music Background: Experienced...

This is so funny to me. I've always thought for years the Regular (10-13-17p-26-36-46) were a little to light on the bottom. The Skinny Top/Heavy bottom felt better, but the 30-42-52 didn't quite feel they belonged with the lighter 10-13-17p strings. Through my own experimentations, I thought the proper combination of a perfect set of Regulars would be (10-13-17p-28-38-48) and the Beefy Slinky's could be 11-14-18p-30-42-52. Anyway, I would rob Peter to pay Paul. That is, I would take the 28-38-48 from a pack of Power Slinky's and put them with the 10-13-17p from the Skinny Top/ Heavy Bottom Pack. I then put the Skinny Top/ Heavy Bottom 30-42-52 with the Power Slinky 11-14-18p to replace the Beefy Slinky's. What? How did Ernie Ball read my thoughts?

Forget 10-46

By Nick from Indiana on April 9, 2023 Music Background: 20 years guitarist

These are perfect for my playing. I love the tension of the 10-17 side but never liked the floppiness of the 3 bass strings.

This basically changes this and tightens up those bottom strings perfectly. Still can bend them and play easily, but just tight enough to have a satisfying "the guitar is fighting back" feel. Basically my standard on all my guitars now.

Perfect for the PRS scale length

By Sweetwater Customer on December 1, 2022

I've been going back and forth on string gauges to find what works best. These are my favorites for my PRS with a 25" scale length. With these strings, I can play in standard tuning as well as E flat standard and Drop D without the strings feeling too flabby or tight.

Balanced Solution

By Zero from Nevada on September 21, 2022 Music Background: Playing 4 months.

I'm fairly new to playing guitar (Strat) and started with 9/42 from different manufacturers. China 9/42 strings were bright but not resonant. EB 9/42 were less bright and highly resonant. EB 10/48 are in the middle. I like a firmer feel of the 48 E and find the GBE strings pretty bright. I recommend giving these a try, especially for $.
