Ernie Ball 2214 Slinky Nickel Wound Electric Guitar Strings - .012-.062 Mammoth Slinky Reviews

.012-.062 Electric Guitar Strings, Mammoth Slinky

Ernie Ball strings have been a top choice for players of all types since the early 1960s, when guitarists came into Ernie Ball's music store, customizing their string gauges to make their axes easier to play. After fruitless attempts to interest major guitar manufacturers in a lighter set of strings, Ernie Ball decided to start making his own. When you open a pack of his strings today, you know you're getting a quality set of strings designed to give you great tone, reliable performance, and long life. You can't go wrong when you string up with Ernie Ball strings!

Great for Baritone Guitar

By Dominic from East Coast USA on January 2, 2024 Music Background: 20+ years playing lead in a regional original band. Check us out on YouTube https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kyMhG0FC35A_oz9QLKcqc1LRLhcdQdSJI

These are perfect tuned to B Standard on my Gretch 29.75" Jet Baritone, much easier to get along with than their standard Slinky Baritone set and sound just as good.

Dropping to a full fifth (A standard) and double stop bends are as easy as my Les Paul with 10's tuned a half step down.

Highly recommend for extended scale and baritone guitars.

For Those Low Notes

By Sweetwater Customer on January 10, 2023

Ernie ball advertises equal tone for all of their products, but I didn't really find that to be the case. I bought the mammoth slinky to tune to B standard, and with the low tension my guitar sounded very flat. Not much low or high end, but a lot of mid. It wasn't a huge problem, as I was able to EQ it out on my rig, and honestly it's a little to be expected considering physics, but a little annoying considering what they advertise.
Nevertheless, works well for that low beefy sound, and I'm happy.

Mammoth Slinky’s are sick!

By Yaroslav from Charleston, WV on September 1, 2022 Music Background: Metal hobbiest

I will admit I am not a big fan of Ernie Ball strings, but this set absolutely rips in Drop A#. I use them on Mick Thomson signature guitar playing into a 6505+ combo. It's absolutely the best sound I've got. Strings feel balanced and don't lose pitch and tune up perfect intonation. I will be sticking with these strings for this tuning.

Pair with a loose .009 for an excellent 7 string set!

By Seth from Colorado on July 30, 2022 Music Background: Hobbyist

I use these along side a loose .009 for A standard on my 26.5" scale 7 string. Excellent if you like lighter feeling strings. Also a great option for standard B on a 7 or drop A as well. 7 string sets are rather limited, but this set up hit the sweet spot for me.

Work great for A# tuning!

By Shaun Blazvick from Gloucester, VA on March 16, 2022

Great strings for A# drop tuning. Have a set on my Esp Lcd HK-602 and there is no buzzing at all. The strings tension up great for A# tuning. Takes a little bit of getting used to, due to the heaviness of the strings, especially when you go to rip on the smallest strings like they are 9's and you realize you need to man up a bit. : )

Massive Strings.

By Matt from Ohio on October 7, 2021

Use these on the guitar I practice on the most to build dexterity. They sell 13's but they're $ more.

Highly recommend using these for fingerboard exercises.. as long as you have an ax that can handle the string tension.

Some of the BEST guitar strings to be created.

By Jason V from Pittsburgh on March 18, 2021 Music Background: Guitarist for over 7 years

I'm not saying this because i've been loyal to Ernie Ball for 7 or so years, i'm saying this because after trying just about every single guitar string i possibly could, from power slinky's all the way to not even slinky's, these probably gotta be the most versatile and comfortable strings i've used. Yeah, these strings are giant (when i pulled it out of the package i thought it was a bass string), but they also hold a tone so perfectly that it's almost insane how strings this big could do it. Ideal for drop tunings? I'd say these are probably for anything up to and including whole step down. They have perfect tension for whole step down, and they have phenomenal tension at Drop A. Get them, seriously, their worth it.

Ideal strings for drop tunings

By Aaron from Indiana on August 18, 2020 Music Background: playing since 1987

I needed a stable set of strings for C standard on a Gibson SG that would still maintain 17-21 tension lbs which is ideal tension for a 25.5 guitar according to my research. This set of string delivers the tone, feel, and stability i was looking for. If your concerned about your guitar tension id suggest using a string tension calculator like stringjoy to input your exact parameters and desired tuning. For example: Standard EADGBE with this set of strings will create a tension of 25-34 lbs
which is not ideal. These strings are specifically for drop tunings.

100% PERFECTION

By Brian on May 23, 2020

For those of you worried about string tension, I can tell you that they are completely unfounded these strings are absolutely perfect. I was able to string all my guitars up with these with little to no problem.
I have guitars ranging from 24-26 scale and all of them have taken to these strings wonderfully, all ranging from C tuning up to the standard. I was assuming standard tuning would cause issues but I have not noticed any yet. Ernie Ball knocked it out of the park on these strings.

Exactly what I was looking for

By Nickolas from Dallas on April 5, 2020 Music Background: Former touring musician

I replaced my "not even slinky's" gauge with these and the wound G is by far my favorite addition. I've seen people talking about how they work best for 25+ scale necks, but I'm using it on a 24.75 scale Jim Adkins tele in drop B and the tension is PERFECT. I also play in half stop down drop D and I didn't have to make any adjustments with that tuning. If you like thicker strings for a heavier tone don't hesitate to try these out. I've found that I have less "dead spots" with the wound G and it sustains much better than the plain string. Happy rocking, everyone!

Mammoth slinky

Simply amazing. If you have a 25.5in scale guitar and play alot of drop tuned stuff below C these are a must have!

No more singles!

By Southern Punk Syndicate from The Mountains on October 8, 2019 Music Background: Long time basement artists who will die unknown

I’ve been writing and playing in C standard for a long time now, but had never really settled on a string set as none of the packages sets worked well for that tuning.
I usually bought sets and switched out singles, and had been on the string journey for a long time, searching for balance, tone and proper tension.
Strung up on a 25.5 scale neck, these have perfect tension for C standard, chords ring out clear, single notes and solo work is light and easy yet not floppy or excessively tight.
Chugging on the low strings is great, clear. Punchy, no mud, I forget that I’m tuned down.
Thank you Ernie Ball! A set like this has been sorely needed!

My new drop tuning set

By Daniel from Arcata on June 22, 2019 Music Background: Timbre Enthusiast

I previously used EB's Not Even Slinkys and tried this out just to give the wound 0.024" 3rd string a try. I'm very impressed with the improved bending/playability from a wound 3rd string. The extremely large range in sizes results in some interesting harmonics. The smallest string is 0.012" like a standard "Regular Slinky" 1st string and the largest string at 0.062" is the size of a bass string.

Some people with more Fender historical knowledge than myself told me that this set is close to what Leo Fender used on the original Esquire guitar (I do know that old school 50's players used huge gauges compared to today). On my Tele I get classic twang on the high strings and baritone bass on the lower strings.

It should be noted that this set is for drop tuning only. This set would probably test the tolerances of your guitar's hardware if you tried to reach Standard-E tuning. I imagine your string trees would shoot across the room and your neck would make a scary creaking sound. So if Drop B or C is your usual tuning, I would recommend trying these.

Finally a decent set for us down tuners!

By Taylor on June 18, 2019

I was so excited when these were announced because someone was finally making a set catered to heavy down tuning that didn't have absurdly tight treble strings. Before, it was either buying singles or mixing and matching sets, but the Mammoth Slinkies solved that problem!

I used them in D standard on my Les Paul, but one of the nicest things is that the extra thickness on the E, compared to my old 12-60 set, helps it keep tension when drop tuning too. These strings are very versatile and I think they could easily hit drop A on a 25.5" scale with the right set up.

As for string quality, they're Ernie Ball, we all know what we're getting in that department already. They have a super bright sound out of the package but break in nicely. I play with a Bigsby so they took a day or so to stretch out and settle into staying in tune, that was my only real struggle with these at first. They do die out a bit faster than the NYXLs I usually use, but since I don't have to mess with singles and can buy one set for 1/3 of the price, I can live with that trade off. For those reasons, I did deduct half a star, but ultimately, I don't think I'm going to go back to my old sets any time soon.

Mammoth is right

By Kris Hartzell from Bay Area, CA on June 13, 2019

I was recently turned onto this set from a popular online gear reviewer named Fluff. I slapped a set on my 25.5" scale guitar and worked perfectly in Drop B. The tension feels great and they sound snappy. I also slapped a set on my 27" Baritone. Sounds killer in Drop A. I highly recommend.

Great for acoustic guitarists who push too hard when playing electric.

By Marc from FL on September 29, 2021 Music Background: Full Time Demo Producer

My tuning always goes berserk when I play electric rhythm guitar because I just push too dang hard on the fretboard. I Never did develop that electric touch- never will. It just doesn't come up often. BUT- All that wiggly pitch went away when I put these on my Cheap Epi Les Paul. It is a simple and effective solution to this VERY common problem.
