Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar - Ebony Reviews

6-string Acoustic Guitar with Spruce Top, Mahogany Back and Sides, Mahogany Neck with SlimTaper Profile, and Rosewood Fingerboard - Ebony

You get more guitar for your hard-earned dollars with the Epiphone DR-100 acoustic guitar than you'd expect. You'll find select spruce atop mahogany back and sides. The DR-100's tone will improve with age as the wood matures. And the playability is amazing, thanks to Epiphone's SlimTaper neck shape, a not-too-thick, not-too-thin profile that's ideal for a wide variety of playing styles. So while the Epiphone DR-100 acoustic guitar is priced like a beginner's guitar, it's got tone and feel that you'll never want to give up.

Great Guitar

By Jole from Miami on January 31, 2024 Music Background: None

I got it as a gift last Christmas, haven't stopped playing to this day. Sounds and feels good for the price. I learned a lot on this guitar and still use it whenever i have spare time. I would have never discovered the appreciation I have for guitars if it weren't for this guitar. Ik it's not the best by any means compared to other guitars but to start playing /practicing guitar it's perfect. Plp have said it sounds better as the wood matures and I'm noticing it now.

REALLY happy with this guitar!

By johnlatch from Texas on November 10, 2023 Music Background: I play

Over theses 76 years, I have bought/sold/traded many acoustic guitars. I have tried almost every different size and shape, looking for "That Tone."

I've always liked the sound and projection of dreadnought size guitars. This guitar "checks all my boxes" in reference to tone playability, projection, balance; as well as quality and workmanship.

Bottom line; you can spend a LOT more money for a lesser guitar. Save your money, invest in one of these; you'll be glad you did. JL

Wow!! My dr100 arrived about an hour ago after taking it out of the box I noticed that the strings were wound beautifuly and that the side of the frets where even with the side of the finger board, after tuning up I was able to play a major bar chord on the 5th fret I noticed also that the strings are light 12-53 perfect all the way around and yes I would definitely recommend this to a friend

Great for the price!

I bought the ebony DR100 May 2017, and it's been a great guitar.. not had any problem with it at all! It seems like it sounds better the older it gets! You won't go wrong with it! That it in the upper left.

Awesome!

By John D from Pa. on November 15, 2021 Music Background: X pro. but playing everyday

To be honest. I purchased the guitar as a Christmas gift for my daughter to give to her husband. It will be his first guitar. I am a guitarist for 45 years and own a dozen very expensive guitars. Upon receiving the guitar I acclimated it and the opened it only to visual check it out.
The guitar arrived flawless. The quality of woods used and the construction of the guitar is amazing and equal to guitars costing much more.
I'm sure it will sound, play and feel really good.
Jeff Jent (my sales rep.). He emailed and texted me checking on how everything was with the guitar. I explained to him that the guitar was going to be a Christmas gift (purchased in October)and if there was a problem would we be able to return it after Christmas and he got back to me right away telling me that it would not be a problem.
I would highly recommend this guitar!

You simply can't beat the quality... especially at this price point. The packaging was quite sufficient, cosmetics pretty much impeccable. The action and intonation was exactly what I was looking for. Absolutely love the warm tone of the mahogany! It also has decent volume and projection when you need it.
I would highly recommend this guitar to ANYONE... no matter how long you've been playing! I've made many purchases at Sweetwater and they NEVER disappoint. They leave the competition in the dust! They are what a music store should be!

Nice guitar

By Jerry Senear on November 1, 2019

I am a little different with my review. I have been playing acoustic guitar for over 50 years. I have three other guitars. All high end. A Martin, A hand made Classical and a Guitalele. I live in a Senior Highrise that is not Humidity Controlled. With 10-15% readings in my apartment during the winter my guitars stay in a Humidity controlled space during the wintertime. Because they are in storage that leaves me with no guitar to play during the winter months. One of my neighbors has been dealing with Sweetwater for over a decade. He said why don't you buy a laminated top guitar to play during the winter. I am familiar with and have owned and played an Epiphone Hummingbird pro guitar in the past so I knew I would be going with an inexpensive Epiphone guitar. I did the three easy payments option and bought the DR-100 Ebony. It arrived in perfect condition with the exception of a broken B string. I took it to my music store and they put on a set of strings and tweaked the truss rod while they were at it. I said all that to say this. It is an amazing guitar for the money and just what I needed for Minnesota's dry winter months. I still humidify it but I don't have to worry about a top cracking. I added the truss rod cover shown in the picture and it really sets the guitar apart from others.

Unbelievable for the price!

By Bryan on March 27, 2019

Let me just say I"ve had this for a week and I love it. I had an old starter acoustic that just drove me nuts with fret buzz and always went out of tune. I wanted an acoustic that I could actually enjoy without breaking the bank. The other reviews on the guitar are spot-on. The finish is beautiful (I got the ebony), the tuners stay nicely in tune and are strong. And you get a good robust tone from even the stock strings (D"addario"s, I believe). It has a nice slim build, a comfortable neck, and a beautiful enlongated headstock. Nothing about this guitar says cheap. It"s wonderful to look at and just begs you to play it, and a wonderful find for someone still in the intermediate stage and looking to move up. I have an old Epiphone s900 electric and the quality is wonderful. It"s nice to see that Epiphone still makes great quality at an affordable price. Will definitely be looking at Epiphone"s for future purchases. Plus Sweetwater had this in my hands within 24hrs of ordering, unbelievable service!

DR-100 Sunburst

By Sweetwater Customer on November 27, 2018

First off I'm no pro, just a 30 year old guy trying this guitar thing out again. Dabbled into it in my younger days but youth and lack of patience got the best of me then.

That said I've been browsing some local Mom and pop music stores and a un disclosed big box store. Kicking tires and strumming strings on various acoustic guitars.

Clearly a larger budget was out of the question for this purchase and one I couldn't find was this DR-100 to play with for some reason. After reading the other reviews here I decided to pull the trigger. Ordered on a Sunday night and had it Wednesday morning. Was packaged better than I could of hoped for but it got better after I opened it all up. For the price point I fail to see how this guitar can be beat!

Sounds great! Hung out with a buddy last weekend and to my ear sounds as good as his new 600$ Yamaha. Not to mention the fit/finish on this thing is hands down awesome!

You're kind of a fool not to grab one of these regardless of your experience level. Glad I picked one up and glad I ordered from sweetwater. It won't be my last purchase that's for sure.

New to guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on September 27, 2018 Music Background: Vocalist, and future guitar player

I Have never learned to play guitar, but it has been on my "Bucket List" for awhile. I started out thinking I wanted to get a ukelele, then changed my mind, bought a guitalele, and changed my mind again just by seeing this Epiphone DR-100. I picked it up at Sweetwater and JUST strummed it, that was all it took! This is a beautiful guitar with a rich tone that makes you want to play it all day long. The beauty of the ebony color, the tone, everything makes me happy that this was my first guitar purchase. Now, I am hoping to learn to play this well enough to do it justice!

Epiphone DR-100-Ebony

By David Henry from Fort Worth, Texas on July 4, 2018 Music Background: Love guitars and playing them. Rank amateur. Blues, Country and Western, Old rock stuff.

I had been considering getting the DR-100 Ebony for some time. Two reasons were the color and
the price. I think a lot of people confuse the words "cheap" with "inexpensive". This guitar has a big
body which generates a full sound. It has larger (thicker) frets. I found the finish to be absolutely
flawless. Although laminated, no big deal for me. Got a nice strap and a really nice Gator gig bag.
This guitar fits well in my collection with its dreadnaught tone. Every guitar I have purchased has
been for its unique tone. This one, for me, is a winner on all counts. I really do love the ebony.
Gorgeous !
Sweetwater just can't be beat for its excellence. Joseph Secu knows his stuff, for sure.

Epiphone DR-100 - Natural

By Brian from Louisiana on March 9, 2018 Music Background: Complete Newb

I am a new student to the guitar so I do not have the experience of other reviewers. I do however recognize value and this guitar is exactly what I was looking for. Fit and finish on the instrument that I received was a bit better than I expected and it has a full, rich sound. The features of this guitar at this price point makes it perfect for me as a beginner. It may not be my last acoustic guitar but I am happy with it as my first one.

This was my second Sweerwater purchase and in both cases, Jordan sent updates with order and shipping details. This attention to detail is why Sweetwater has become the first place that I look for new equipment.

Thanks.

Epic Phone DR-100 - vintage sunburst

By Russell Lee from Newark, NY on January 3, 2018

This Guitar I'm am very satisfied wit. I just began relearning guitar and am very impressed with the sound and feel of the epiphone dr-100. I would recommend this to any beginner or even most intermediate players. The only complaint I might have would be that the strings are a little lower grade but as I said this is mostly a beginner guitar, but other than that I am 100% completely satisfied.

Epiphone DR-100

By Dave Mathews from Marshall, IL on December 19, 2017 Music Background: I play acoustic and electric guitar, piano, banjo,

I bought this for my Nephew for Christmas. When it arrived I had to make sure no damage. It came well packaged. Only adjustment was some tuning. It plays very well and the quality of the tone is outstanding. The sustain of the strings sounds great. Great price for a good looking guitar. I can't wait until Christmas when he opens it and the look on his face..lol
Now I am jealous, so I am purchasing one for me!!

5 Stars!

By Markus on December 1, 2017 Music Background: Guitar player for almost 30 years

I bought this as a gift for a beginner for Christmas but, having played almost 30 years myself, I took this guitar for a lengthy test drive before boxing it back up for the upcoming holiday. Prior to this purchase, I also played a coworker's beginner guitar (Fender FA-100) he recently bought on Amazon at approximately the same price point. I was less than impressed by the Fender but, considering the price point, I figured it was on par with any guitar you might buy for less than $200.

Boy was I wrong. This Epiphone is simply superb. Everything about this guitar is better than the Fender. The action, neck comfort, and playability on this guitar are far better than I imagined was possible on a guitar costing less than $600. The finish is flawless (my coworker's Fender had a couple of noticeable paint flaws). The intonation is spot on (e.g. the octaves at the 12th fret are perfectly in tune with the open strings), there is no buzzing present on any string nor at any fret and the guitar holds its tuning amazingly well. I've made no adjustments to the guitar. I simply unboxed it, tuned it, and am very impressed.

If you are looking into getting a beginner guitar, this should be your first and only choice. You absolutely get much more guitar than you are paying for and it will serve you well into your intermediate (and even advanced) playing stages. Sweetwater, you've done it again!

Great Guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on October 20, 2016

I bought this while I was in the process of moving as a guitar I could have just follow me until I had a permanent place and could get my other guitars out of storage. I immediately feel in love with it. This guitar has a richer sound than my other acoustics and holds its tune very well. No fret buzz, no intonation problems, and its price makes it even better.

I would highly recommend this to anyone starting out or as a guitar you can bring from place to place if you're worried about damaging a more expensive guitar. I would also recommend it to anyone who has been playing for years because it's an overall solid guitar.

Great first guitar

By Aaron Robinson from North Las Vegas, NV on October 17, 2016

I needed a guitar to take camping or to just tag along with me wherever I ended up in the great outdoors and could leave the high end stuff at home...Oh my, to my surprise, this guitar blew me away...Sound projection, playability and over all quality I just couldn't believe...So...I bought two more to keep just in case one got damaged...Buy one...or three of these jems, you won't be disappointed...And as far as Sweetwater goes..I've been dealing with them for several years...the greatest place there is to get all your musical needs...doesn't get any better...

Excellent guitar. I've owned many through the years including a couple of Gibsons and I can say this one ranks high on the list considering what I paid. The build is very good and the finish is excellent. Ready to play right out of the box. Tone is great, volume is excellent. I have small hands and the neck design and size is very good for me. I don't think you can go wrong with this guitar. Sweetwater does a great job. It was shipped the same day I ordered it and it was here in two days. Very well packed.

Excellent value for a guitar, far better than the price

By Daryl Crowder from Birmingham, AL. on January 30, 2015 Music Background: Church musician for many years

I have been playing guitar for near 50 years and I have owned many quality guitars that such as fender, gibson, and kramer a USA model. After lowering the action on the DR100 to suit my style of playing, which is finger style. The playibility, action, and sound are very good, and this coming from a very hard to please guitarist. Even after lowering the action it has very minimal fret rattle and I mean minimal. Very good guitar that no doubt some professionals would be impressed with. More than happy I purchased it.

Bought for my son but now I want one

By David Brooks from Ozark, AR on August 29, 2014

I thought this would be a cheap, disposable guitar for my young son. Boy was I wrong! Not only is it a well made guitar but it plays and feels like one of the big boys. I play it more than I play my expensive acoustic (much to the chagrin of my son).

Great buy!

By Anonymous from Tempe, AZ on March 31, 2014

First, I would like to thank Sweetwater for excellent service.
The guitar came in secure packaging. I wasn't expecting too much from a low cost guitar, but I was taken aback when I played on this instrument! It has great tone, a bit more on the low end so this rhythm guitarists will enjoy playing on this! The build quality is great and it is made of solid wood, no sheets like on other models at this price point. I play the bass and casually play on acoustic but I seem to be attracted to play on this beauty more often. The action is just right for me and it didn't need any sort of truss rod adjustment! If you are stuck at this price point, look no further than Epiphone DR 100!

Amazing

By Noah Larssen from United States on April 3, 2013 Music Background: Student touring musician

This is truly a wonderful and affordable starter guitar. Also good for campfire playing because its loud and if it gets damaged its not a very expensive guitar. If you play gigs I would not recommend it as I said a starter guitar. Would recommend it for beginners as a touring musician.

One word.... Fantastic

By Justin C. from Apple Valley,Ca on March 20, 2013 Music Background: Sound engineer.

This guitar is an affordable incredible music device. It sounds as great as a much more expensive guitar. I love it, it's gorgeous too. The strings provided may need to be swapped for better ones. Truss rod may need to be adjusted. Other than that it sounds good. Also the action may need to be changed depending on your style of playing.

Un-matched Quality for the Price

By Brian Romine from Hartford City, IN USA on March 2, 2013 Music Background: Avid Guitarist

This is my 4th Epiphone purchase since 1970 and the quality of this guitar has not changed. I purchased this one for a new guitar student and dropped by Sweetwater in Ft. Wayne to handle it. Strings low to the frett board make this insturment easy to play whether your a beginner or seasoned guitarist. The sales staff are top of the line as well as their facility. Back to the guitar...The sales rep. was up-front as he informed me that the tuning keys could stand to be up-graded (which I agree), however; the DR-100 stays in tune and has nice rich tones. For a sweet deal, I recommend both the Epiphone DR-100 and Sweetwater Music.com.

Fantastic value

By Justin Shelton from Maysville, KY on January 2, 2013 Music Background: Music student, Recording artist

I was just looking for a replacement acoustic to my Yamaha F335. When I picked up this guitar at the local shop, I didn't expect much. But then I played it and was completely shocked- the guitar sounds incredible. It's also very well-made and feels solid. There are no action/intonation problems to report, no sharp frets, nothing is wrong with this instrument. Plus, the natural finish is wonderful (the ebony finish is also well-done. The sunburst could be better, but it's nice). The finish on the neck, really nice. Doesn't grab your hand or anything. Whether it be for your beginner guitar player, a backup acoustic, or just an acoustic to have around, for $100, you absolutely cannot ggo wrong.
I'm definitely going to see how well it records, then re-review.

By Sean from Kansas on October 3, 2012 Music Background: 1 year.

I bought this guitar and some other stuff, because i quit playing a couple months ago and wanted to start again. First off the guitar when I got it I was amazed on how nice the finish really was. Its a beautiful guitar. The strings on it were actaully not bad but I switched it for my favorite Ernie Ball super slinky and now it plays even better. Came pretty good set up out of the box. Tighten the truss rod just a tad but that was it. It has a awesome sound to it, its different but in a really good way. I LOVE THIS GUITAR. Second was sweet waters amazing service. This company is awesome and I will ALWAYS shop with them fast shipping, better then guitar center and musicansfriends hands down. Keep doing what your doing sweetwater.

This is my first guitar, and so far I haven"t been able to put it down. There"s a sight buzz sometimes, but that could easily just be my playing. Over all, I am incredibly satisfied with the guitar itself as well as Sweetwater"s excellent customer care.

Epiphone DR100

By Sweetwater Customer from IA on June 19, 2017

This is a great beater for a hack player like myself - the sound is full and ripe with great bass. Out of the box it played very well (only needed just a bit of truss adjustment), and action is acceptable. Strings are good, but I will be upgrading them when these are worn (but good enough to leave on for now). I wouldn't recommend for a new player without new strings and lowering the action a bit (my wife plays occasionally and really couldn't effectively use this as she doesn't have the finger buildup). For the money, I couldn't be happier. Holds tune very well, hardware is good quality. Be aware, there is a plastic sheet coating on pick guard, but it isn't obvious. I thought I gouged the guard trying to get one of the stickers off, but later realized it was a protector sheet - it is on that tight! And finally, as many have noted in other reviews, the service from Sweetwater was excellent. Chris was my man and made me feel very comfortable purchasing this rig. Showed up double-boxed in two days with absolutely no damage or problems whatsoever.

I got the guitar 3 days after ordering it .I got it to play around the house without having to go upstairs , where my other guitar and amp are. I like the guitar It sounds good .not to expensive. I took off one star because of blemish in paint on back. if it were a more expansive guitar I would of sent it back. but IT is not and it is on the back.so it does not bother me that much. Bottom line is that I like it. and would buy again.

Decent well made guitar

By Kevin from Jewett City, CT on December 31, 2015

This ain't a bad beginners guitar or a kick-around campfire guitar. Comes with an allen wrench to adjust the neck. I had a slight buzz at the top of the neck, but a 1/4 turn on the adjustment put it back in good tune. Good idea to keep the wrench around as humidity and such will affect the wood. Well made guitar. Thanks to salesman Tommy Winter for personal attention to my quickly received order

Great beginners guitar!

By Dave W. from Fort Wayne, IN on March 8, 2013 Music Background: 15 years as a musician, first year learning guitar.

The Epiphone DR-100 is an excellent beginners guitar. It is very forgiving on the frets and is easy to play. For a $100.00 guitar you can't beat the price. I was surprised at the sound that this guitar provided. The sound was full and rich, something I was not expecting. Again, this is a great guitar for any player who is starting out and for the price if you end up not liking or don't want to play your not out a lot of money. The only bad thing about this guitar is the size of the frets. The neck and frets are little in the big size which made playing certain chords and notes very difficult and that is the only reason why I moved "up" in my guitar. Other then that, this is a great guitar at a great price.

It's ok for the Buck

Had one a few years back, had sold it and regretted I did. So I recently purchased the ebony and was disappointed with the downgrade of quality. Tuners on mine were slipping, the fret ends were so rough that it could tear your hands. Also truss rod cover (if you call it that) for show only, with no engraving of ( DR) model on it. Now adjustment is made at fingerboard inside sound hole. But,you can make many improvements . I replaced the tuners, filed and leveled frets , replaced the nut and saddle with bone and installed a genuine Epiphone piezo pickup system that I had purchased a few years back and plays great. As a player we all eventually make it truly our own.

use bright strings.

pretty happy with the guitar. a few tweaks helps a lot. would just suggest using bright strings, unless you enjoy a big booming tone. I prefer a brighter sound. still cant go wrong with the DR-100.

ya get what ya pay for....

The fret buzz alone should mark this item as defective.. I've had it set up .. new strings and truss rod adjusted and still cant kill the fret buzz ... it feels cheap and plays cheap. Compared to my old pawn shop guitar this thing is a toy. I so wanted to ship it back but i just could not be bothered to drive 40 miles to drop this POS off.
