Great Mic For Live Play

By Mike from CA
Music Background: Gigging musician

I've been hanging onto my Shure Beta 57 for decades, but this Sennheiser has the perfect sensitivity for my vocals. The signal-to-noise ratio gives my lighter voice an additional boost and I can get right up on the screen without distorted results. Great purchase and expect great reliability over the years with this one as well. Highly recommend, you won't be disappointed.

I recently purchased this Sennheiser e945 mic, already had two, this was an addition. Well made, reliable mic, works well, especially for the price. Sweetwater is always terrific, exemplary customer service, warranty and speedy free shipping.

Born 10/2018 - Died on stage 02/2026

By D
Music Background: Gigging solo musician

Fantastic, was my go to gigging mic- right up until the moment it just died at a gig, right in the middle of singing the second verse. Attached to a mic stand. Ouch. Of course you assume it's a bad cable or channel so you do the 'panic dance' on stage, only to find out it was the mic failing all along. That left a mark.

I guess 7 years of use should count for something, hence the rating. But in the mic locker I've got the competition's well known staple (hint: comes before #59) that I can probably leave for my grandchildren.

Unfortunately this failure was well outside of the 2 year Sennheiser warranty.

Sadly I'm not sure if I trust getting another. YMMV.

Sennheiser E 945

By Mike C. from Virginia

What a noticeable difference ,between the e945 and a shure 58.The 945 is much brighter and louder,as well as a better balanced all around. All I did was unplug old mics and plug in the new ones, with everything else still being the same.Highly recommend the e945 microphone.

I am a retired professor of Theology. I use this microphone to occasionally teach and preach with.

By Richard S. from Westfield, Massachusetts
Music Background: boys choir, opera, tribute band singer, preacher, Seminary professor.

I am a retired missionary as well as a local minister and theological seminary professor. I needed to replace my old microphone to something really good and clear. Someone burned my house down and I lost everything I owned. So I chose the Sennheiser E945 over my previous mike a HeilSound PR35. I can even use the Sennheiser E945 with my Yaesu FTDX 3000 Ham Radio. I get really nice reports back that my audio is really clear. If I turn up the mike gain to 80 to 85% on my ham radio I am told my audio is loud. NICE! I have a microphone stand with a push to talk button and use the new 2 foot XLR cable to hook up the Sennheiser to my mike stand then another cable to my ham radio. I can teach and keep 3 fingers width away from the mike, and I am told I am really clear. When I am a guest teacher, students like my microphone because of it's clarity. They do not miss anything I say.

Vocal response is crazy good!

By xds_sm

I've been using the 835's for years in my band and recently decided to go with the e945 series for the supercardoid feature. I've gigged twice so far using these mics and the response has been amazing! We have both male and female vocals and there was a noticeable difference with these mics; from low notes to high. Our band is very vocal-centric with lots of harmonies and with the e945's you can really hear each part; whether you're using open monitors or IEMs. We also play the local casino circuit where sound is provided, and they typically use the Shure Beta 58's. These e945's blow the Betas out of the water in my opinion!

Killer MIC!!!!

By Hill

I'm a mezzo soprano and play alt rock/punk/folk songs. I used to owned a SM58 beta, and this one is waaaaay better to me than that. The voice through this mic really cuts out in those loud punky, or high reverb/delay/mod spacy songs from all the instruments. Great feedback control as well (we play in small venues and our sound engineers had no problem with this mic). 10/10 recommendation.

Love my new Sennheiser e945.

By Lynn B. from Taylorsville, Utah
Music Background: Guitarist and home recording studio.

I have been looking at purchasing the Sennheiser e945 microphone for my home studio for a while now. I had purchased a Sennheiser e845 microphone and it had worked very well and I loved the quality of the mic and it sounded amazing. So when I got the chance to buy the e945 at a discount, I jumped at it. It has been a great purchase. Build quality of the microphone is superb and the sound quality I believe is even better than the e845. I tested it by doing a vocal recording with it and several of my other best quality microphones. It came through as one of the clearest and best sounding mics in the group. I am really happy with it and it will get used a lot in future recordings. I also love the way that it looks and it feels very comfortable when holding it in my hand. One of the best microphone purchases I have done.

Sennheiser makes my favorite mics.

By Ivan B. from Bigfork, MT

I'm a baritone & Sennheiser mics are best for my voice. My wife prefers the Telefunken M80, but she doesn't know what it cost, if she did she'd have stuck with the e835.
I'm going to put the e945 on my mic when I'm at the drum kit & I'm waiting on the e935 because all my clients prefer the e835 over the legendary SM58s that only get used as demonstrations now when mic shopping in my studio.

Mic shootout winner

By Zach from WA
Music Background: alternative hard rock/metal singer for 25 years

I was skeptical about this mic. I've had a 935 for years - I picked it up as an impulse buy but found it to be far too susceptible to plosives and less robust and full than I expected, particularly in comparison to my Audio Technica ae6100. The 6100 has been my go-to mic for the last 18 or so years, until I picked up the 945.
My current band has three singers so we needed a couple more mics to supplement the 6100. We tried the 945, the SE v7 (excellent mic, and a steal price-wise), and the Telefunken m80 (way too plosive-y, didn't work for me) - and huge shoutout to my sales engineer Nick for talking through mics to try out!

Our rehearsal space is small and has a lot of drum and monitor noise, so we needed mics with tight pickup patterns. We also need our mics to be bright enough to cut through a dense mix of 3 guitars, drums, bass, and keys, but with enough heft to not sound thin during more quiet, intimate vocal moments.
Soundwise, I don't think the 945 is better than the 6100, but certainly different. The response of the 945 is smoother across more frequencies and quite bright at the top, where the 6100 is a bit hotter in the mids. The brightness of the 945 is exactly what we need to cut through our mix, but it can definitely get harsh or brittle depending on the voice and/or your mix. If you want a 945, get familiar with the EQ on your board.
Once the EQ was set, this mic really got my voice to sit in our mix amazingly well. Bright, clean, robust, full, articulate - all the subjective words that you want from a vocal mic are what we get from the 945.
The thing that blows me away about this mic is how extraordinarily tight the pickup pattern is. Using in-ears, I can't detect any bleed from drums, cymbals, or anything else no matter where I move in the space. It's outstanding, and surprisingly forgiving once you get used to it. Forgiving isn't exactly the right word, but it's certainly usable. You can play with proximity a bit and make it work with some practice. But also, we've had great luck setting up our sound (EQ, compression, gating) so that I can go from whisper to belt to scream with very little change in proximity with absolutely no distortion.
I'm keeping the 6100, but after nearly two decades, the 945 has replaced it as my new favorite mic. Ultimately, we'll be picking up 2 more for the other vocalists.

Quality Gear

By Kim B.

Use SM58 for as long as I can remember ... I happen chance use the house gear at a venue, and they used this microphone. The vocal pattern is really good and the feedback issues we had in the past (at least, that which was attributed to me), was eliminated. I like to get right on the microphone when I sing, and that's what you need to do with this microphone.

My dull lifeless sound system came alive all of a sudden!

By Skater M. from NW Ohio
Music Background: Been doing oldies shows for 40 years.

I was getting pretty disgusted with my vocals. Muddy and no punch anymore. I was unable to EQ a good sound that I liked. I was told my old mic might need cleaning out. I'd already done that. So, on to Sweetwater I went. I like the Sennheiser line of mics I've been using them for a while now. So, I upgraded to the 945 from the 835. My sound system liked it a lot and so do I!!! A tad high end but it's worth it to get a vocal sound you like easily. The only thing that it lacks is an on/off switch but the prevent feedback design makes it okay. I'll be sticking with Sennheiser and Sweetwater for sure!!! Thanks you guys!!!

Clarity

By Rick from Seattle
Music Background: Drummer, live sound engineer

I expected the often dull Sennheiser result from this mic. Compared side by side with Beta 58. Noticed immediate clarity and body. Notched 333hz on the 58 about 5db medium Q to drop the boxiness. Then the 58 closely matched the natural or more pleasant sound of the Sennheiser. If you need body and clarity w/o EQ fuss the Sennheiser is a solidly built mic, though add another $ to the budget.

Rock Solid Vocal Microphone

By Cameron L. from Hodgenville, KY
Music Background: Lead Vocalist and Lead Guitarist

For the longest time my church has had 835 capsules on all of our band's vocal microphones. As we have grown and redesigned our stage, the guitar players are beside the drummer now. The drummer has a shield, but we were still getting a lot of side-bleed in our 835's.

We hadn't had the budget to upgrade to better capsules yet (we knew we needed to) so I got the Sweetwater Card and got the 24-month financing on it and got myself the e945 and the XSW IEM's.

Just tested them out for the first time this afternoon for band rehearsal and there's already a pretty significant decrease in bleed in my vocal microphone, and having the IEM's allowed me to get rid of the floor monitor I had (EV PXM 12P's) which further reduced our "noise" on stage.

The e945 also has a bit brighter sound to it which works well with my voice especially when in my lower register.

Overall, 10/10!

Terrific mic

By Rick from Cleveland
Music Background: Pro

Used this on three gigs so far, and so far I'm very pleased. It's warmer sounding than both my EV767 and my Shure Beta 87a, but still has enough high frequency response to give my vocal clarity. The mic is very solidly built, too. Get yourself one, I believe you'll be pleased with it. Make sure you ask for Josh Kattner for this and ally our gear needs, the guy a total ace and class act. He's never let me down, ever. And I buy a lot of gear.

Excellent Mic

By David T. from Everett, WA

Last night I was setting up for a gig and realized that my e945 wasn't in the bag. I had apparently left it behind at last week's gig. Called the venue, they said nobody knew anything about it. Fortunately, I had a couple spare SM58's on hand and made it through the gig.

Man, I'd forgotten what an upgrade the Sennheiser had been from the Shures. Battled with feedback all night. Had to eat the mic to get sufficient level, all the while sounding thin and muddy. So without hesitation I immediately ordered a replacement e945 this morning. Even if the missing mic somehow shows up, I'll be happy to have a spare.

This is the best vocal dynamic mic I've ever owned, and I have owned a great many over the years, some of which were quite a bit more expensive than the e945. Highly recommended.

Annoyed my Sister in Law:

By Sheldon H. from Myrtle Beach, SC
Music Background: MSEE, HS band& orchestra percussion, play Vdrums, home 32 channel studio

My brother in law and I play together, he's a good singer/acoustic guitarist, I play drums and have a small studio. As such I help him with his sound setup, getting his acoustic and vocal pedals and monitor/main setup for typical gigs. I bought a e945 as I wanted to have a super cardiod in my kit to complement the e825 and e835 I already carried. Brought it to a test session where we were working on his guitar settings, and he sang a Jimmy Buffet song through it; stopping halfway to curse and exclaim "****, I need to buy this" As this is not the first or last time that I've introduced him to better gear, his wife is a bit hesitant to have us get together.

That being said: The presence for a tenor/baritone was noticeably better, as he tends to place the mic from the side and his monitor out front this gave him better gain before feedback with the Super Cardiod pattern vs a cardiod due to his preferred angle of the stand/clip.

The best live vocal mic.

By Shane J. from SARALAND, AL

This is the best vocal mic for live performances . It gives such depth and clarity while being able to cut through a full live band mix regardless of the venue. It even sounds significantly better than its younger brother the 935! I was shocked at the vast improvement from replacing the 935 with the 945. If you are looking for a mic in this price range, don't look anymore and just get this!

A nice upgrade!

By Michael M. from Erie, PA
Music Background: Semi-Pro …. 54 years experience.

Been a consistent Shure SM58 user for about 40 years. Still use them. But decided to try the Sennheiser e945 on a whim. Wow, what a nice upgrade! Very articulate and a very tight pickup pattern. Definitely makes for a cleaner mix through the PA, due to the super cardioid pattern. Bought another one for my wife as there was a definite audio difference if I was using the e945 and she was using the SM58. Very happy with my purchase.

Crisp clear vocals for my hard-to-amplify voice

By Sweetwater Customer from Alabama
Music Background: 40 years experience.

I have one of those voices that lacks presence in the upper midrange...think Rod Stewart. So I've had several pro sound engineers tell me, "you need a different mic" when I was using a Shure Beta 58A. So I finally listened to what they were telling me, splurged and got the e945 by Sennheiser. Great choice! It's a noticeable upgrade for my particular vocal timbre. My band-mates have noticed too.
It's a great looking mic too. Seems very durable, but time will tell.
It's been a learning experience making sure it doesn't feed-back, but I'm getting better at it. Most of the time, my band(s) do our own sound, so it's on me to set it up correctly.
Nice purchase.

As advertised!

By Verne J. from OH

We are a 6pc band and can get a little loud on stage. The bleed through our previous e845's was really interfering with the soundman's ability to elevate the vocals above the music because when he tried, it just elevated everything..not good! So we switched out our 5 vocal mics with the 945's and were very pleasantly surprised to hear the significant improvement of the SOUND of the vocals. Wow, these are so rich & warm also with a better enunciated high end, so we heard an immediate improvement to the quality of the vocals...big time.

In terms of noise rejection, which was our motive in the first place, they performed extremely well! I even had to turn the drums up in my IEM's because prior, I was getting quite a bit of them through the vocal mics on stage, but now they can barely be heard. So, as advertised! Soundman is very happy and if he's happy..well, you know.

This is a great microphone and I highly recommend it for both quality of sound and the noise rejection factor.

Articulated clarity

By Ralph from Midwest
Music Background: Bass, guitar, vocal

Best out of the box vocal mic I have ever heard. Less adjustment necessary to accomplish required results. Frequency range is the reason for this. I replaced two shure beta 58s with these because they're to high on the high end, causing feedback. The e945 has a better vocal range. I will be replacing my other mac's in the near future.

It's as good as you hope it's going to be

By TRG
Music Background: Professional performing musician 15+ years

This review is easy to do. The Sennheiser 945 is solidly built. Comfortable in the hands. Rock solid on stage with absolutely nothing being picked up except the vocalist intended. It added a nice easy depth and warmth on the lower end and still kept the clarity and shimmer on the highs. I have two of the wired and two of the G4 wireless. I recently covered sound at a wedding where another keyboard/guitar duo was also singing and playing side-by-side under a 10-foot roof. I had a
Shure wireless 58 beta A on one singer (at their request), and Sennheiser's G4 945 wireless on the other singer. The difference was amazing. The 945 was clear, warm and added absolutely no other noises into the mix. I had to shut the Shure 58 Beta A down and replace it with another Sennheiser 945 in order to keep stray keyboard and guitar noise from getting into the mix and causing mud and feedback. On my own duo, soprano female vocalist with an acoustic guitar, and a bass baritone male and acoustic guitar, we have had many unsolicited comments from people who have seen us live countless times over the past 15 years, all saying the same thing...whatever you changed, we love your new sound! The only adjustment we had to make was remembering to slightly angle face on to avoid plosives when moving in close. Proximity effect is very easy to work with and smooth. Are they a little more expensive? Yes. Are they worth it? Absolutely yes!

Great Sound - Terrible paint job in 2021

By Robbie from California

I have been using one of these since 2017. In 2021 I bought a new one (same model e945) and after a few uses the housing got all scratched. Clearly a low quality paint job. When I contacted customer service I was very disappointed. They wanted me to jump through all sorts of hoops to get a replacement. Bad way to treat a customer in this day and age. I would not recommend it at all. Good sound, bad paint job, TERRIBLE customer service. The left one is the 2017 one. Right one is the 2021 one.

A pleasant change

By Joe from Superior, WI
Music Background: an ole dog singer drummer turned guitar singer

I used a Beta 58 since way back and it served me well, but the Sennheiser 945 is a refreshing change. What I like about it is the tight patterned frequency response feeling I get when I sing into it, a bit crispy on the highs sometimes (through a Bose L1). Overall, as I said, a pleasant change.

Great Mic for the money!

By Mark d. from Michigan
Music Background: Working Musician

This mic is a great buy for the money. Very warm and easy to dial in. Haven't had a problem with any type of feedback so that's a plus! Although we use in ear monitors and we have a low stage volume. I would recommend this Mic to anyone. I was using the Old standby SM-58 but it just seems to be tired. Thought time for a change! Sometimes change is good my friends!

Duo partner swaps this in for SM58

By Todd from Office
Music Background: Marshall stacks.

I was skeptical about this mic, as I have used Shure mics for years with what I thought were acceptable results.
First gig, it was obvious that this mic was far superior to the 58 he was using. As everyone else says - it's the clarity. It's as if he had been singing through a beach towel previous. I didn't adjust the gain or the EQing. If I ever buy a new vocal mic (I used a headset now) It'll be one of these. Thoroughly impressed.

Love this Mic

By Lance K. from Minneapolis / St. Paul
Music Background: Gigging live since 1981, Recording and releasing music since 1990.

For me as a lead vocalist, singing all forms or rock and metal it's an excellent mic, it breaths, has dynamics that I can work my techniques from warmth, depth, presence and clarity... which is what I like, when I'm working in the upper ranges it gives it a little more lower mid body and when I'm working in the lower ranges it has a nice warm full sound. Excellent choice for a lead vocalist doing live shows.

Extreme clarity snd sensitivity

By Jack W. from Mishawaka, Indiana
Music Background: Mostly a very good amateur acoustic guitarist who has done music as a hobby an ministry without charging anything. Now that I wii be retiring soon , I am practicing diligently in order to sound professionally and actually charge sometimes for performing.

I have used a hyper cardoid Peavey mic since the 1980's, mainly because it naturally boosted up the low notes in my vocal range. Back then the thing was spring reverb.

Recently I purchased the Fishman SA330x small venue PA. I really didn't like the digital reverb in it. So I went out on the web and started watching comparison videos on dynamic mics and considered the Shure SM 58 to the alternatives including the Sennheiser 800 and 900 series dynamic mics. This one sounded the best to me.

This mic was a game changer. It doesn't artificially boost the bass vocal notes. But since it goes down to 40 Hz the bass is now more accurate and better, although I had to crank up the bass all the way on the PA and could use more. But the sound of the bass with the digital reverb sounds so clear that it doesn't matter. This mic does a great job of higher vocal range notes, even for both male and female voices. And now I like the digital reverb. Don't even think I will need any vocal enhancer for vocal effects at least for now.

The first word to use to describe this mic is clarity. Right behind that is sensitivity. This mic has made me sound so much better that it actually made me realize that I am a better singer than I thought. How does it do that? Not by somehow enhancing anything but rather by picking up every vocal nuance and passing everything sung almost magically to whatever sound PA or amp is being used.

I would say that there is one very tricky thing about this mic and that is you need to sing directionally straight into it and not from any side angle. And it is very sensitive to the distance from your mouth. Which means I need to train myself to keep a consistent distance. However on the good side once I find my sweet spot, then I can use the sensitivity to distance to add variability to the vocals in a song. Of course this is true with any mic but this mic is so super sensitive that it exaggerates this aspect.

Overall this mic far outperforms anything I could have anticipated.

Great mic.

By John
Music Background: Songwriter, singer, and guitarist of Modern Rock and Hard Rock.

I don't perform live anymore and use it for recording in my home studio. Very clear and detailed for vocals and miking an amp. Excellent quality. It replaced an AKG C5900 for me that broke the diaphragm suspension band and ended up being none replacable as AKG kindly doesn't make replacements anymore. Which will also be my last AKG mic. And I will definitely look at getting more SennHeiser's as I use their headphones also and there excellent too.

Similar to the E935 in clarity

By Bobby from Norfolk Va

I purchased the Sennheiser e935 a few years ago and decided to try out the 945. Construction quality is top notch and after removing the grill, looks like a clone of the e935. Handling noise is very minimal. Voice clarity is outstanding, clear, crisp and loud. Presence boost in upper mids, lower treble compared to other popular dynamic vocal mics is not as pronounced. Sweetspot is about 2-3 inches from the grill at about 55-60° mic stand placement. I usually have the pre-amp gain at 11 o clock to start with. Only slight EQ adjustments are necessary in my opinion. Grill is slightly larger than found on the e935 and swapping them definitely changes the sound. On some voices, the grill swapping will improve the sound. I highly recommend both the e935 and e945.

Great sound E945

By Tracy B. from Texas
Music Background: Country singer for over 30 years

I have been using Shure for my vocal for over 30 years and I was looking for something that had a crisper and cleaner sound than my Beta 58 and this is it. Crisper high's for sure and also had to pull the gain back a bit from the previous settings. Completely satisfied with this mic and always satisfied with the service I get from Tyler.

Amazing

By Michael B.
Music Background: Over 30 years playing live venues

For over 25 years I've been using for live vocals the Shure 58 and Beta 58 and had just recently purchased the Beta87A..Recently I had an opportunity to visit a young musician friend of mine who turned me on to the E945. After visiting him I immediately called my Sweetwater engineer Zack..Our band was preparing for a annual July 4th show that we have headlined for the past 8 years and were having a final rehearsal that week..To make a long story short Zack got the E945 in 2 days rehearsed that Wed played the show Sat and not only was I blown away by this mic but everyone there including my fellow band members couldn't say enough about the sound..I could go on forever about the clarity the warmth etc etc..Thanks Zach and thank you Sweetwater..

Great Mic

By Kenneth C. from NM
Music Background: Gigging Musician

I bought this mic after debating with myself whether to get the Sennheiser e 945 or the Shure beta58a. I went with the Sennheiser because I liked the reviews I saw on it and I had a Sennheiser mic in the past that I was happy with. I'm surprised by how well it cuts through the wall of sound. I ran it through a single powered speaker for band practice and still, it was clear as day. Very happy with this mic.

Tremendous microphone!

By Brian from Erie County
Music Background: Bass player, vocalist with 35 years live experience

Worth every penny! If you play live and have trouble hearing yourself in a monitor mix, this is the mic you need. Smooth, punchy tone that cuts through and doesn't feed back when you need a little extra gain.

Don't settle for a cheaper mic if you have been fighting with gain and feedback issues.

Great Mid Range Mic

By Michael K. from Port Orchard, WA
Music Background: 45 years weekend band rocker

After my Shure SM86 was starting to blow away the sound of the lead singer's Audix OM5, and after we had switched to a full Bose L1 system, I decided to pick one of these up for him for his birthday after he had been pining for one. Holy (insert whatever here)! The sound was nothing less than incredible. The Audix was starting to sound crappy and this was even more apparent after the e945. Not only that, even as directional as the Audix was the Sennheiser picked up way less of his Fender Jazz guitar amp through it and the midrange creeping feedback that would occasionally show up vanished. The mid to high range of this mic is really exceptional and I found myself centering up the pots on his channel after having to tweak him across the board as the Audix (great mic on it's own just not very road worthy) sound was getting really muddy, The warmth and fullness is only experienced not read about with this guy. With the improvement he could hear himself more clearly and loudly within his personal monitor instead of having always to tweak that aux feed. If my Shure goes down someday, I'll replace it with the e945.

I have more affordable mics and a more expensive one. The more expensive one sounds great, but is very sensitive to handling noise. This mic is a great compromise - sensitive, clean, accurate, but not much handling noise. A great accomplishment !

The Best Pound for Pound

By Arnie from Kissimmee
Music Background: Pro and Home Studio

Outstanding mic at a very competitive price point. Sounds extremely clear and rich on vocals. Wide frequency range and immediately attention grabbing. Very professional sounding and amazing presence. I researched a bunch of XLR handhelds before buying this one, some much more expensive. This one wins pound for pound and can hang with more expensive mics.

Much better than the E935

By Cristiano L.

I have 1 sennheiser e935 and 3 e945. I've been a singer for 25 years. I got a great musical experience working with music in Brazil my whole life. The e945 has more clarity in details, much less proximity effect, much less feedback problems, better preserves sound frequencies at greater distance from the microphone providing more comfort in interpretation when compared to e935. The two microphones are different in sound and to use on vocals the sennheiser e945 is infinitely better than the e935. It's an extremely solid option for live shows! Be sure that it will perform very well at work! It is also important to know your voice and test several microphones if you need perfection... One more tip! If you plan to stay among the dynamic mics because of feedback, and want even more quality, go for the Sennheiser MD 431 II. Because it is a super cardioid mic too and has a better sound. I hope this helps, good luck!

Crisp and Clean

By Wade from Arizona
Music Background: Classically trained, lead vocalist/worship leader for 30 years

For a lead vocalist, choosing a personal microphone is one of the most personal decisions. After repeatedly pouring over many dozens of reviews, I bought an e945 and an Telefunkin M81 and ran them A/B fashion along with our beat up Shure 58s in several long band sessions.

Build quality on both the M81 and e945 are both just excellent. Gorgeous. The e945 is definitely an upgrade over our beat up m58s which do work okay. I can see why many folks like the Telefunkin M81, but the e945 sounded better for ME. The e945 is cooler and crisper. The sound can seem a bit cold and stark compared to the M81 which does provide noticeably warmer tone. But, as a classically trained vocalist (now singing lead and strong harmonies in a worship band) I found that I prefer cool clarity over engineered warmth. For my vocals the added warmth of the M81, while sometimes nice, sounded a tiny bit artificial in my ears. A good sound guy with good gear can enhance warmth downline if you need it, but nothing can bring back crispness and clarity if your mic is not reproducing it up front. I find the e945 to be particularly crisp and accurate. Not as much as a quality condenser mic, but those tend to be pricier and have other liabilities. The e945 also pleased me as it seemed a bit more responsive than the m81.

I've found my e945 to have decent sensitivity, good feedback rejection, and that it reproduces my voice with crispness and accuracy. As I slightly modify the color of my voice, the e945 picks up more fine nuances so I can more easily evaluate and adjust. But be advised that crisp and accurate reproduction picks up your faults as well. That's a good thing if you are somewhat adept at correcting them. Not so much if you are not. I love it.

I definitely reccomend the Seinhausser e945 for those who want to hear it like it is. But do yourself a favor -- Read lots of reviews and try several mics before you make a final choice. It's a personal thing.

Great Mic, Great Service!

By Dwight C. from Prescott Valley, AZ

We've been using this model for a few years now (great for female vocals), so when they went on sale it was hard to say "no" to getting another one! Just as impressive is the service I got from Mike Soper - these were backordered, so he stayed on top of the inventory coming in and got in touch with me as soon as it arrived to check on next steps. If you don't have a contact there already, seek him out! A very knowledgeable and helpful person!

work every penny

By Rick from Boston

I've been using an SM58 for the last couple of years and it has been solid but I've not been supper pleased with the lack of the detail and clarity in my voice. Also the 58 seems to have a pretty wide cardioid pattern and always picks up a huge unintended dose of drum kit. Well, I got this mic on Thursday and had a gig Saturday and... holy smokes the e945 us a game changer! It was such a pleasure to sing into this mic. Clear, warm, and open sounding. Much more output than the SM58 and the hyper cardioid pattern keeps in mic bleed in check. I highly recommend this mic!

Great for vocals

By Fred T. from Baton Rouge, LA
Music Background: Guitar player, Sound man (46 years) Home Studio

I am a sound tech for my church. We have e935's and e940's along with 2 Beta 58's. 58's started failing (don't know age as they were donated). Would cost a little less than the e945 plus shipping to repair. When I saw the e945 for such a great price, I bought one for myself and tried on female lead vocal. Our music is contemporary Christian and we mix fairly loud. Her vocals cut through and were more intelligible especially when singing in her lower range. Sound was so good that instead of repairing 58's, we bought 2 more e945's for other lead vocals. Hoping to be able to get 3 more for the rest of the vocals and plan to go with wireless Sennheiser with e945 capsule in the future. NOTHING beats this mic at this price.

By Jake O. from NM
Music Background: Semi-pro

I've used the standard fare most of my semi-pro (2-3 gigs a week) career. 57, 58, Beta57/58, etc. I was happy with those, but found this on sale and am glad I did.

Like the marketing hype says, this mic is smooth and sits well in the mix. I'm using it live, and don't find it as spiky as my 57. Will try it next in the home studio to see which other mics I can replace.

By David M. from Augusta, GA
Music Background: 48 yr performing musician

I have used SM58's forever but started hearing some of the Sennheiser mics and knew there was a distinct difference. So when I decided to upgrade I noticed 2 things immediately...... the gain had to come down from it's normal setting with the 58 and when singing some of the occasional parts that were very low, it almost had condenser-like performance and i didn't feel like I was having to push those low notes so hard. I'm happy and just hope that this e945 will have close to the longevity.

By Bob W. from Boston, MA, USA

I am very happy not only with the mic purchase, but the speedy delivery. I ordered this mic on a Tuesday evening then I got a call from Sweetwater the next day. They said it would get here on Monday, but it was actually here by Friday afternoon, and that was with the FREE shipping option. SW also had the best price. I've already recorded with this mic and it's awesome. I'm a screamer, and this handles my metal vocal tracks with the sound I want. I can't wait to use it with the band live instead of the old SM58, which is still a great mic as well. Sennheiser makes awesome mics and I have some MD421s I love. This gets me into a better handheld realm. Rock on!

True Story

By Vincent
Music Background: 50 years a drummer

OK...true story. My bass player owns a major (and I mean MAJOR) sound system rental company in the Southeastern United States (they did the sound for the last Bob Dylan concert to pass through here...get the picture?). Anyway, I'm just a singing drummer but I know what I like and I like Sennheiser. So, after extensive research (not really), I switched from my Sennheiser condenser headphone mic and bought the e945. Make a long story short, after only one gig the aforementioned bass player, a guy you would figure could have any mic he wants wholesale (sadly, he's still using 58s), turns to me and says "I have got to get me one of those!" So I bought him one. I bought my guitar player one, too. I'm not rich, but they're my brothers and I want them to have the best...and the e945 is it. True story.

I don't have a lot of experience with knowing what equipment to buy. My band mate recommended I get this microphone. I am a high soprano and many times people at our gigs would tell me they couldn't hear my voice on top of the instruments. This microphone fixed that! By Mr E. from Nashville
Music Background: Live and recording since 1978

Does what they claim it does. Using your regular gear and mics, set up for play. Then plug in the e945 and you will notice how it cuts through the FOH and monitors. You will have to turn it down in the mixes. The e945 requires far less EQ than any other mic with any vocalist. All this with way less feedback. You will only think it costs too much money until after you buy and use one. I bought one at first, then I bought one for everyone in the band.

For years I have been an advocate of SM58s - not any more. This mic gives crystal clear highs and subtle depths that leaves the competitors standing. Read somewhere it is the best female vocal mic available - I can tell you that as I am a deep baritone and I still haven't heard anything that comes close. Many many thanks to Ton Maxwell for what was just part of a large order - BOSE, Mackie, Behringer and all the rest. I would never consider buying from anywhere else other than Sweetwater.

Sennheiser E945 Supercardioid Microphone

By Ted M. from Lady Lake, FL

I've been using the Sennheiser E835 for a couple years. I really work close to the microphone and although I was pleased with the sound of the 835 I noticed that if I got loud too close to it there would be a little bit of a distorted signal pass through. That's not a diss of the 835. It's a great mic, I just had to be careful with it. I'd seen good reports on the E945 so I thought I'd upgrade and try it. I ordered it on Friday and was pleased to find it at my mail station Monday afternoon. We had a 4 hour outdoor gig scheduled for that night so I used it. To be brief, I am amazed at the sound quality of this microphone. If what I was hearing in my monitor was any indication of what the audience heard,..then I am well pleased. The sound engineer was impressed as well. The detail this mic reproduces is wonderful. It made me want to sing better. It's hard to put things like this into words. If I was singing a "screamer" it handled it well without distorting .If it was a soft song the detail and presence were right there. I would highly recommend this microphone to any one who needs a quality vocal microphone for live use. I've not used a better one.

By Sweetwater Customer from United States
Music Background: Gigging at Gunpoint

I was about to give up on my vocalizer, then it occurred to me that I was using the wrong mic. The mic I bought initially was causing a feedback loop in my array speaker, due to it's force field the size of a football stadium picking up everything in my practice room. So I asked Aaron what he thought I should use, he suggested this mic and the e935. Figured for a little more I'd get the e945. Every cent spent was worth it, not only did it clean up my feedback problem, the sound quality improved to where I don't have to french kiss the mic while screaming to get response out of it. Works great at lower volumes and picks up my range perfectly.

e945

By Rich S. from Philadelphia, PA
Music Background: Sound engineer, pro musician

After using SM58's for years I wanted to try some higher end vocal mics. After reading countless reviews and trying some of the options out there I decided on the Sennheiser e945. I couldn't believe the difference.
The e945 really brings out the warmth in your voice. It is especially noticeable when singing soft parts, just move up on the mic and the vocal still stands out in the mix. I've been using one for two years and couldn't be happier. The rest of my band have all tried the mic and since purchased their own. Need I say more.
I'm sure there are other great mics out there and it's always best to try a few out before deciding since we all have different demands, but if you want a great vocal mic I have no reservations about recommending the e945.

Not For Everyone

By Danny C. from Kailua, HI
Music Background: Pro Musician, Producer, Recording Engineer

After years of using trusty old Shure SM and Beta 58 microphones at gigs, I began to grow curious as to whether there was a better mic out there for my voice. After trying out various mics at gigs (AKG D5 & C5, Shure SM86 & Beta 87a, Audix OM5 & OM7, Sennheiser e835 & e845), I was led to explore the Sennheiser 900 series by the recommendation of a few friends. So, I borrowed an e945 and e935 and compared them pretty intensively (back and forward for a few hours a day) for about two weeks.

First off, don't let anyone tell you that Shure is the "industry standard," and therefore the best choice. Yes, Shure is a time tested favorite. But if you research the touring rigs of chart-topping artists, Sennheiser will come up at least as much as Shure. Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Blake Shelton, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera...the list could go on and on. Bottom line, if you insist on putting any importance on "what the pros are using," Sennheiser is as good as any.

Second, don't let ANYONE tell you that the 935 and 945 are the same, minus the polar pattern. They sound quite different from each other, and a voice that sounds great on one could sound totally uninspiring (or downright unpleasant) on another. I personally found that my voice benefitted from the e945's extra clarity and presence, along with the tight and responsive lows (it sounds way more ballsy than any Shure that I've tried). My bandmate, on the other hand, sounded piercing on the 945—we were both literally cringing when he sang anything in his upper register. The much warmer e935 was perfect for him.

The moral of the story: this mic sounds like no other, and with the right singer it can be the perfect choice. The presence is not overdone like I found some competitors to be, and it far more pristine and clear sounding than any other mic I have tried. However, you really need to try a range of mics to decide if it's right for you, because no mic is flattering on everybody. I hope to never sing live into anything else now.

An absolute beauty

By Nathan M. from Kettering, OH
Music Background: Pro Musician

I've used a beta58 for more than a decade and though it's been a solid workhorse, I've grown a bit weary of having to drastically alter the board's EQ to suit my voice.

The e945 sounds absolutely beautiful flat or with a touch of EQ.

At a recent show I nearly started laughing while singing because the nuances and subtleties that I hear when I sing in a quiet room by myself were presented for all to hear-which helped me more fully express the song. It was just beautiful.

I cannot imagine a better mic for my voice.

Finally, great sound with no feedback

By Alex C. from Windsor, Ontario, Canada
Music Background: Keyboard Player, Live Sound Engineer.

I purchased this mic after owning the e865, and having to deal with constant on stage feedback with live performers. I wanted a mic that had similar quality but more resilience to feedback. The e945 was the solution. It's very close sonically to the e865, but when playing live on stage, it's very hard to notice the difference. Highly recommended.

Top notch. Natural sound, Cutting through easily.

By Spyros from Thessaloniki, Greece
Music Background: Rock Band Singer (part time)

First off, I sing a lot of grungy rock stuff in a pretty loud rock band. Eg. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Audioslave, Guns n Roses, Whitesnake . All the vocal "explosions" are getting through smoothly.

Nice natural sound. Sound engineers (even though they usually deal sm58's) dont seem to have any trouble with it.

Very good rejecting feedback, even with monitors in close range (small clubs etc).

Having worked with other dynamic mics (included the cheaper sm classics) I highly recommend this one.

It's reasonably priced, and delivers what you pay for. Would only switch for a better (and more expensive) condenser mic, if I knew it could stand up on our loud stage.

Tried a lot of mics at the NAMM show. My research from wearing headphones pointed me to the 945. I play in a classic rock band and in an acoustic trio that sings a lot of harmony. Finally made the investment in this mic. After several gigs in both bands I can tell you it is worth every dollar over my sm58s. The added gain lends a clarity to my vocal that I didnt have before. My band mates are jealous and saving their gig money to but the same mic.

Sounds great needs

By Nick B. from Chicago
Music Background: Weekend warrior!

Great sounding! Natural! Proper vocal EQ'ing. Very smooth EQ curve so EQ'ing at the board is a breeze and no surprises like on other mics which have an odd-ball peak or dip.

Very clear lows and no mud!

Missing that last half a star due to super sensitivity of the monitor placement - seems to be larger back pattern than other supercardiod mics. And also that gain before feedback is lower than many other mics I work with so while I may be on the e945 and be at +-0 the other singers will be at -10, -15. Don't freak out on this, it just takes 1 quick lesson and WELL worth it!

Can't be more satisfied

By Frank from Toronto, Canada
Music Background: Enthusiast....hobbyist gigging band. Classic Rock and Modern Rock

I went to my local guitar shop. I had them plug in 4 microphones. The Shure SM-58, the Shure Beta 58A, the Sennheiser e935 and the e945.

Researching products, it is easy to get caught up in "what are the pros using". Everyone wants to use what their idols use. I was prejudiced to Shure as a result. Big Mistake. Before you buy any microphone try out a bunch. I had the rep plug them in on a clean signal with a good P.A.

After singing into them for a good 30 minutes, the Sennheiser e945 was the one I kept going back to. The clarity was heads and shoulders above the others. I noticed that the Shures were too warm for me. My voice sounded more "nasal" through those. The e945 gave me the most clarity. I was convinced. Running direct, head to head comparison's, I could not beat the range of this mic. From as low as my voice could go to (approaching) scream....this mic handled it.....as crisp as can be.

Using it in rehearsals now for 3 weeks, I must say it cuts through our classic rock band mix just wonderfully. My bass player had an old Shue SM 58 in his bag. I pulled it out and tried a couple songs. I was so glad I stuck with the Sennheiser.

Hey....here's the problem. People, even veterans, are afraid of change. Shure uses older techonology and it is a workhorse no doubt that has stood the test of time. HOWEVER, It might not be the best anymore. This mic will give any of the Shure mics a run for their money.

However, each has a different voice and likes a different sound. Try out as many as you can before you buy. But please, make this one you try. You won't be dissapointed.

Just a really excellent microphone for live sound!

By Jeff H. from Columbia City, IN USA
Music Background: Instrumentalist, Vocalist, Electrical Systems Engineer

The only reason I would consider giving the e945 anything less then a 5.0 rating is that I am still slightly addicted to the proximity effect of the Shure mics, but wow, is this a great one! As an engineer/musician, to me the e945 is as good as anything I've heard among the dynamics. It's everything you'd want if your top priority is a natural, clear, smooth and accurate sound for the stage. GBF is very good, despite what a few others seem compelled to believe for whatever reason(s). Super mic.

WOW

Absolutely blown away! Our guitarist, who is also a sound engineer, suggested this mic for me. It is EVERYTHING he said it would be. The adjective I most hear describing this mic is "rich" and it is so true. An amazing microphone. By the way, if the sound engineer can't "deal" with this mic, then he is an idiot, IMHO. It IS cool, however to see that my gain needs to be turned down much lower than everyone else's. Major power and beautiful richness from this mic. I can sing loud OR soft on this mic, whereas I've found Crown works best for soft and SM58 works best for loud (with me). Can sing anything on this mic! I need a Sennheiser endorsement.

Same issue here. And whenever someone other than me is doing sound, they can't deal with this mic and end up making me use their ShureSM58 instead (ugh.)
