Sennheiser e 609 Silver Supercardioid Dynamic Guitar Microphone Reviews

Dynamic Supercardioid Guitar Amplifier Microphone

You couldn’t ask for a handier guitar amp microphone than the Sennheiser e609 Silver. Just like the classic MD 409, the e609 likes to be right up on the grille of your guitar cabinet, to the degree that you can just drape it over your amp and let it hang there in the right spot on your amp — no stand needed! A natural 40Hz low-frequency cutoff prevents excessive boominess, and it’s virtually impossible to overload the e609, so go ahead and crank it up. Other things to note are its clear sound, courtesy of a powerful neodymium magnet and hum-compensating coil.

Great deal for the money

By PL from Cary, NC
Music Background: Experienced

I used SM57 live at church in the past and hate everything about SM57/SM587. Not that I'm a hater, I have an SM81 for acoustic instrument and it's fantastic, but SM58 and SM57 reputation is not based on good sound but rather on the fact they survive several drops on stage which is significant.

I used these E 609 with good sounding gear to start with and connected straight into a TASCAM portable 24 track studio, even without a preamp and it sounds awesome. I'm surprised, my former mistakes recording electric guitar lead me to believe I needed a preamp, not anymore.

Simply Very Satisfied. Tone balance and dynamic range is exactly what I was looking for. I assume the impedance matches recorder input perfectly, which explains why I'm so happy about it. This time it's exactly the sound I had in my head, no need to compress, EQ or any kind of post processing, just adjust the amp to get the sound thickness I want and that's it.

Highly recommended. And at this price it's a small risk if your ear is not like mine.

Good job Sennheiser.

Great Mic!!!

By Joe K. from OH
Music Background: Recording Engineer, bass player

Not only is this THE mic for guitar amps, and that it's similar to an SM57, but due to its supercardioid polar pattern and high off-axis sound rejection, I thought I'd experiment and put one on my drummers' hihat and one on the ride cymbal. I usually use SM81's - which are GREAT! But, of course, being condensers, they pick up EVERYTHING. After A/B-ing recordings with the SM81's and e609's, I was blown away by how well they sounded - and how much less I had to do blending those in to the overall mix on the drums!

I love these mics

By Cliff D. from Wilburton, Oklahoma
Music Background: Award winning producer/engineer and life long musician

I love these mics so much that I have three of them. They work great and sound just as good as the Shure Nexadyne guitar mic I own and they do it at less than half the cost.
When someone pulls out a stand to set their amp on I celebrate these mics even more. I just run a mic cord through the amp handle and hang the mic in front of the cabinet. The flat design let's them easily stay in place throughout the show.
I've even used these on drums and had great success with them. calling them a Guitar Microphone is kind of misleading because these mics are fairly versitile and have a nice frequence response. To my ear they just have that famous Sennheiser mic sound and I'm very please about that.
I'm also really please with my Sweetwater Gear Advisor. Adam is awesome and very knowledgable. He's just an all around great guy and is always pleasant to deal with.

Great studio mic

By gerard A.

I have several mics to record electric guitar and this Senn e609 is a great bang for the buck. A nice complement to a 58, however, it's not a ribbon mic.

Solid option to consider

By Matt from Idaho
Music Background: 4 decades of playin, 3+ decades of recording/producing

I've used these a few times over the years, but recently bought my own so I decided to conduct a shoot-out vs other Sennheiser favorites, a vintage MD 421 U and the new 421 Kompakt.

Even though I'm not really a fan of just hanging it by the cable, I appreciate the small and lightweight nature of this that allows easy setup in a tight space.

I recorded tracks across 5 different playing styles, from light and snappy to dark and heavy, with a mix of riffs, licks, and chords and I included plenty of reverb and delay to make sure to test its ability to capture the nuances.

In short - everything I threw at it sounded fine; a reasonable capture of the amp very similar to what I heard in the room. I feel confident that I could use it in virtually any situation and get acceptable results, and in some situations it would be absolutely ideal.

Does it sound like a 421 as many have suggested? I would say not - its definitely from the same family tree but perhaps a more distant relative, with more edge, presence, and grit. With careful placement and perhaps a little EQ I could use it on anything, but for grab-and-go action it's probably slightly better suited for more neutral to darker amps, or situations where you need to cut through the mix a bit more.

Finishing the shootout story - the 421 Kompakt has a warmer/darker/rounder sound that could be used on anything, although it may need a touch of EQ at times and would likely be a better choice on a bright amp than the e609. The MD 421 U has a sonic profile that sits in-between the other two, not as much edge as the e609, but not as warm as the 421 Kompakt.

It's a good price, does a solid job on its own, and pairs nicely with other classic choices for a rich, full sound. It's not going to be my go-to mic but will indeed get heavy use in my studio.

The easiest to use amplifier mic I have used ever!

By Buck E. from SEQUIM, WA
Music Background: Professional musician with 52 years experience.

I have used an SM-57 for years. Decades. I was never 100% pleased with using the 57. It took up too much space if it was on a stand and didn't work well enough if it was hanging down in front. The Sennheiser e 609 Silver Supercardioid Dynamic Guitar Microphone is meant to hang down in front and the sound it gets is so much better than the SM-57. It's quicker and easier to use and I liked it so well that I talked my lead guitarist into getting one as well and he loves it too. I was expecting a much more expensive mic but the Sennheiser e 609 Silver Supercardioid Dynamic Guitar Microphone is very well priced. I highly recommend any gigging musician that wants a good sound from their amp to use the Sennheiser e 609 Silver Supercardioid Dynamic Guitar Microphone.

an industry standard with good reason

By Zed S.
Music Background: multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, singer, studio hermit

The physical configuration of this mic makes it an obvious choice for micing guitar cabs, but there's more than that to its suitability for that purpose. The frequency response isn't ideal for anything but the punchiest of bass guitar tones, and keyboardists who both prefer a miced amp tone AND use God's plenty bass would probably be best served using it as part of hybrid (DI and amped, bass amp and fuller-range amp) recording or performing set-up (especially recording). The "color"...not that there's an overwhelming amount of it...is similar to what one would expect from an SM57 in the same position(s). So, whether you're looking to spend less time on trial and error in mic choice/placement or to add a classic tone to your recordings and/or performances, the E609 Silver is a reliably and consistently good option.

Great on a drum kit too!

By idhan
Music Background: hobbyist looking to go pro

So I actually bought these to use as tom mics for my drum kit. I saw a video of a studio using them on their rack toms and figured I'd look into it. And these things are AWESOME. They're super transparent in their tone, have excellent off axis rejection, and more affordable than other supercardioid "drum mics". Even on the floor tom that's tuned as low as it can while still producing tonality, it captures it all. If you're a drummer looking for a "budget" option for mics, and have your own stands or rim clips, I highly recommend giving these a shot.

After seeing me spend many thousands of dollars on microphones and recording gear in the last ten years, my sales engineer is so down to earth that he recently recommended this microphone, and he was right. Great Alternative to an SM57

By Anthony P. from New York
Music Background: Studio engineer for over 25 years.

The mic is compact and light and has a more evenly tempered high end than the 57 (in that it has less peaks and valleys than the shure). The mic is BRIGHT. Top end for days. The mid range is there a bit more than the 57 and if the source is right on the mic the bottom end isnt bad. At any kind of distance though, the bottom end suffers a bit.
Check out the video to compare this to the e906 and SM57.

An obvious must-have

By Michael from Nashville

Disclaimer:
My opinion is that you should buy this before you get that SM57 everyone keeps telling you to. Reason? Proximity effect is more pronounced on this mic with a slightly higher shift in the mids, so with the recommended placement, this mic more accurately captures the raw essence of your cabinet.

Hey, 57s are OK and all, but rarely do I ever find myself using them alone. I typically use them for filling in the mids (which honestly, I think the SM81 does a better job of) and fade it in with whatever my primary mic is. The E609 is one such primary mic, depending on how you set it up. After experimenting, it turns out my own unaided findings were congruent with the manual: the best place to be with the e609 is halfway between the cone and cap of the speaker, off-axis. Mine ended up pointed ~40 degrees inward to the cap instead of the suggested 30 degrees though, for just a HAIR more of the attack I like. That placement truly did exemplify a lot of what your naked ears hear when near the cabinet itself. I A/B'ed between my ears and what I heard on the headphones, and found myself pretty floored at the results. This mic alone was able to capture the low-mid "woody" resonance and girth of a 4x12 in person and I felt I was hearing my amp in it's entirety, not just a lone, disembodied speaker.

4 stars for being 90% of what I'm looking for and being cost-efficient. The last 10% would be a bit more presence in the highs so I don't have to use a condenser (or the underrated Audix i5) to fill in that gap.

Works great

By William from Texas
Music Background: Pastor and lead guitar player

I bought this mic for my cab. I have Victory Duchess V4 pedal size amp which sounds amazing but the line out to the mixer sounds horrible. So instead of running line out to mixer I bought this to mic my cab with and it sounds like my speaker instead of some nasal thin nastiness. I like the idea of not having to use a mic stand but make sure the cable you are using doesn't have any supportive backing close to the connection it will cause the mic to hang sideways and alter your mic placement.

Great mics

By Kurt O. from Seaside, CA

I bought two. I tried them out this week - one on my bandmates Deluxe Reverb and one on my Orion Rocket. I didn't even touch the EQ on either and couldn't tell you the difference between the FOH sound and standing in front of the amps. Really great sound and easy to use. This was a good investment.

Sounds Amazing

By Patrick

I've been using a Shure SM57 to mic my guitar amp for years and years and I finally got one of these so I don't have to lug a mic stand around anymore. You can just drape it over top and let it hang against the grill cloth. I like the sound of this way better and my guitar recordings have never sound better. I feel it gives a much more accurate representation of what the amp actually sounds like live, where as the SM57 gives a more compressed and low-end prominent sound.

Some people complain about it having plastic parts and question the durability, but I've been throwing this in my gig bag and hauling it around for weeks and see no durability issues at all. I'm not the least bit worried about it breaking and the included bag is even a little bit padded. There's no sense in over-engineering and making things more expensive than necessary when it works fine.

A great mic for the price

By Rick from KC MO
Music Background: 55 years of rock and blues

I was pleasantly surprised the first time I used my new Sennheiser e 609. The playback of my guitar on my DAW was what I heard while recording. There was no colorization or difference in the tone. While it's certainly not the best mic on the market, it is sensitive. I have to be aware of ambient room noise during quiet passages when I'm using it. It's a great mic for $100.

Why I bought it.

By Mark Y. from Colorado
Music Background: Working Musician

I bought this mic for a couple more inches of real estate on stage and to possibly save my speaker.
I finally came to the conclusion that I would rather play through a decent size amp in small venues than use a small amp cranked past its headroom. By using the shield of shame. (amp shield). I was happy using an SM-57 for many years, but when you add an XLR cable and then put a shield in front of it, It takes up more space, plus if I were to back up, there's the real possibility of kicking the shield and driving the mic through the speaker grill. With the 609, that can't happen. Plus I like the idea of having the option to just hang the mic through the handle on combo amps and not needing a mini boom. And then there's the fact that it looks cool. A lot of places my band plays have sound systems and a sound man and they always want to use their mics. This is the mic they usually use, and I always like having my own. Just in case.

Great for Fender/Vox tones

By Les P. from SW Florida
Music Background: Teacher, engineer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, consultant.

For those who give this mic a less than stellar review I say you're not pairing it with the right speaker or cab. I acquired a vintage Fender Bandmaster cab and this mic LOVES that vintage Fender speaker. I wouldn't use it for metal guitars but when I put my Egnater Tweaker in Fender or Vox mode into the Fender Bandmaster, this mic just sings. The tone is delicious! Full range and the mic/speaker combo gives me a HUGE sweet spot making it hard to get a bad tone from the pairing. Very easy to position this mic.

I wouldn't say this is the mic for all genres but for clean/crunch Fender or Vox tones, it's my favorite. I've got all kinds of mics and guitar speakers and for Fender/Vox, it's my go-to and never disappoints me. I almost always dual mic but for the Fender/Vox flavors, it can be used by itself which is a big time saver since I don't have to worry about phase from dual miking. For the Fender Bandmaster speaker/cab, I prefer the Sennheiser e609 over my Shure SM-57's, Royer R-121, Sennheiser MD421, Audix i5, Lewitt MTP440, AKG C414b, Neumann KMS-105, Earthworks M23R or Mojave MA-201fet, to name a few I've used.

Some day I'd like to try its big brother, the e906 but for now, this mic rules and does all I need for my Bandmaster cab. I need less (or no) EQ. I'm not sure but I think my vintage bandmaster's stock Fender speaker might be a Jensen or at least Jensen-like. I don't use the e609 on my Marshall Frankenstack since I've already got mics that love those speakers (DV-77, Swamp Thang, EVH, CreamBack 65, Vintage 30 and stock T75's).

So when used with the right speaker, this mic is unbeatable.

Fantastic Guitar Amp Mic!

By Mike B. from Baltimore, MD
Music Background: Guitar Player

I play a few times a month at church and it was very hard to hear my guitar in the mix with the old microphone. After doing some research I asked them to provide the Sennheiser 609. They ordered it right away and all I can say is "WOW, what a difference?!?!" I struggled to hear my guitar (tone) before, now I hear the highest of the highs and lowest of the lows and a real "tight" midrange that I really, really enjoy - it doesn't sound like it's "under water" anymore! This will be the main mic I use for my guitar amp(s) moving forward. The fact that it hangs over the amp (without needing a mic stand) is just an added bonus. The only negative thing I can say is that the mic was a lot smaller that I had imagined. However, for this small mic, it sure does provide a really BIG true sound!!! Don't think about it,, just go ORDER it!!! :-DDD (Thx for reading)

From Practice Space To Final Mix

By Ryan B. from Southern Maryland
Music Background: Guitarist, Bassist, Drummer, Singer/Songwriter, Recording Engineer

I personally didn't buy this mic, but one of the guitarists in my band did. I've seen them all over the place when an SM57 isn't being used, but I've never recorded with one. We mic everything and run in-ears in our practice space and from time to time record our jam sessions (we're a 4-piece jam band a la Phish, Goose, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, etc.).

When I took the tracks back home to mix them, I was seriously impressed. Not only did this mic sound great and true to the sound of the amp, but the fact that it's a Supercardioid is VERY apparent. The off-axis rejection was amazing! A room full of people loudly playing with live drums and barely any bleed from any other source, yet STILL sensitive to the lightest of playing. It sounded like the track had a noise gate on it. It felt like the amp mic equivalent of an SM7B. Couple that with the convenience of simply hanging it over an amp and not really needing an extra mic stand and you can see the appeal. 57s are great and I wouldn't knock them for guitar cabs or snare drums, but this mic is a great alternative and, in many cases, preferred.

Excellent Live Amp Mic!

By DeVeaux G. from Ann Arbor, MI

Solves the problem of using a standard amp mic with a stand, especially when stage space is at a premium. Drop this in front of the speaker with a mic cable looped through the amp handle and takes up no space at all. Good balanced sound brings your amp tone through the PA. I'll also use it for studio recording sometimes with other mics to get some added tonal layers.
Great value and holds up to continued use.

Finally an amp mic that doesn't color your sound

By Larry D. from WA State
Music Background: Pro musician with 40+ years touring, studio work and engineering/producing

I have been using a Vox AV60 for a while now for both studio and gigging. Great amp with loads of flexibility and without the weight of my old AC30, though it has one glaring problem. It doesn't have a direct out to patch to the board for a better integrated mix with the band. I dealt with it for a while with infinite volume adjustments on the guitar and through my pedal board, until I pulled the trigger on the Sennheiser e609. This is a great mic and does exactly what you want. It's clean and quiet and after extensive testing in our studio without the band in action, the clarity and purity of the amp comes through without any coloration from the mic at all. It's fantastic to turn the amp down so that I'm not pushing it (pedal board takes care of soundscape and drive) yet coming clean and clear into the mix with 4 other musicians.
Kudos to the folks at Sennheiser for this mic design. It's also built like a tank and with its direct hang via your xlr over the speaker, it takes up no room at all on stage.
Of course - Matt Kreager - my long-time sales engineer at Sweetwater was, as always - fantastic to work with. Delivery was fast and the follow up was fantastic! Thanks Matt and all the team at Sweetwater. Yet more quality gear, at an affordable price, with world-class customer service!

I've been using these for a couple of years, and they are the BEST. I've never found another mic that accurately reproduced the sound of my guitar amp, and this one does. Used for live sound reinforcement, I literally can't tell the difference between what's coming off the stage and what's coming through the mains. I got two of these to use on my Leslie G37, and they sound really rich, a nice alternative to 57s that I might normally use. Very compact, easy to get them exactly where you want. I recommend them, anytime you are considering 57s or Sennheiser 421s. Andy Rice suggested these and it was a good call. Bruce Jackson

E 609 as a live vocal mic too?

By Benny R. from Colorado
Music Background: Rock bands & recording studio.

After learning what this mic is typically used for through YouTube reviews( close micing a guitar amp and other studio applications ) I noticed it was consistently being compared to side by side or vs a Shure sm57 which is what I use as my live vocal mic in our band "the audience" .Through the videos the verdict was that the e609 was very similar but slightly warmer.
I have used a Shure sm57 beta as my dedicated live vocal mic for over ten years and it has been perfect for reducing stage feedback as you are required to be directly in front of the mic to get the full response from the mic without having to crank the gain on the mixer which essentially reduces more feedback than other typical stage mics.
I also liked the crispness but was curious about trying the e609 as a possible replacement or addition to my live vocal mic options.
In short I can say the e609 has now replaced the Shure sm57 beta as my main live stage vocal microphone.
With that said both mics to me "dry" (no reverb or effects) sound ok but I've never liked any microphone this way.
Dry, the e609 proved to be a bit warmer and the area in front and in near proximity ( an inch or two in all directions from the center of the mic) was an added bonus as far as having some headroom and volume control to work with while singing with out risking feedback or needing to crank the volume or gain to create a better response. Also for a greater boost in needed volume ,(kissing) right on the mic dead center gives you more volume with a boost in the low and mids then I would ever ask for. So plenty of flexibility for a vocalist to amplify a quiet voice , textures, or back off and belt without killing people.
The natural eq of the e609 would never be an issue for me as I do run my mic through a vocal pedal board I created which has helped me achieve the vocal clarity and sound I prefer regardless of the PA system or venue I may be subjected to.
My vocal pedlal board is nothing too overly extreme but simple eq , echos, and occasional distortion and is all utilizing tguitar pedals and made possible by the following set up.
E609—into —pedal cracker XLR input
——from pedal cracker effects loop-
——into Ibanez tube screame
—- to MXR 10 band eq(with pre and post volume control
—-to VHT reverb delay double stomp pedal
—-back into pedal crackers effects loop
—- Out of pedal crackers XLR out to mixing board or PA channel with 12:00 on all pa's EQ's.

Ibanez tube screamer is set with a light overdriven effect with
gain at 10:00
Tone at 12:00
Volume at 12:00

MXR Eq is set to brighten the mid and highs and lows are all knocked way down low. MXR volumes are set just above unity gain for a slight taste of bite and presence .

VHT Reverb is set to a water distant medium echo while delay is set as a doubler with a very short delay with no repeat... just an instant doubler.

Pedal cracker has a wet mix ( how much of the effect pedals get mixed in to the vocal ) which I set as almost all the way up and the dry mix is at 12:00. Then the pedal cracker lets me set the main volume where ther real magic happens and the e609 really shows its potential. This setting changes with band volume and room /venue acoustics.
The e609 in combination with this "singing through guitar pedals set up" allows for lots of non muddy, clear crisp vocal presence and no feedback. I have it on a 19" gooseneck to easily make any position adjustment with one hand.
I believe the e609 would shine on its own as a live vocal pedal ( no pedals) with a little eq adjustment on the PA channel which for me is almost no lows, mids at 1:00 and highs at 2:00 or as high as it can go before feedback and maybe some on board reverb which most PAs have built in.

Hope this was helpful for considering the e609 as a vocal mic. Definitely also good to have around for recording applications of all kinds as well.

Well Worth the Money!

By Sandy E. from North Georgia Appalachia
Music Background: Musically Un-Bottled 1979

So I have wanted one of these for a while but just kept putting it off for no reason. During this Covid Confinement I decided to do a little Mic Shoot out with the Mic's I already had. Most of them are lower budget mic's that I have accumulated over the past 30 plus years. Some where ones I purchased this past year from Sweetwater. I was pleasantly surprised with how they all did, but it was clear when it came to mic'ing up for electric guitar through an amp I needed something that really captured the sound correctly. So I pulled the trigger and got the e 609. It was exectly what I was looking for. The response and sound capture is very true and I could hear a much better recording result right away. In life it is great when you find the simple things that make it all work better. This is one of those things.

Great sound - everytime!

By Jeff i. from Florida
Music Background: Full time musician

Very easy to use- no stand necessary for running a guitar cab through the PA. Mic can just hang over top of your amp or cabinet and you get consistently good sound!! Though we've been using speaker compensated direct outs on several of our guitar amps, we noticed on some a brittleness that sounded different then the speaker cab. With the Sennheiser E 609, the mic is true to your cab.

Works well

By Tom from Going coastal in Oregon
Music Background: Avid amatuer with visions of grandeur.

I like that it can be draped over the front of the speaker grill, makes positioning and fine tuning easy. Ran into a unique situation with it. I was getting some signal bounceback on my main recording amplifier which was easily remedied by throwing a blanket over the cabinet. Overall sound is good.

Great balance

By Jeremy P. from Indiana
Music Background: Playing for 42yrs and toured professionally.

Been at this a long time and used just about every kind of mic out there to mic my guitar amps. Gotta say bang for your buck this mic is the most balanced well rounded sound you're gonna find out there. Love the application also of simply hanging it over the amp and just letting it rip. For recording I utilize this baby and a large diaphragm room mic and it's creamy sweet bliss. Lol!

Sounds Good

By John
Music Background: Worship musician, music teacher, gigging musician.

This mic sounds good. I just have it hanging in front of one of speakers on my Carvin XV212 and it sounds good. I was using an SM58 so it makes sense that this guitar cab mic would sound better.

Good option for an amp mic.

By Sweetwater Customer

I have used a SM57 and this e609 and I prefer the e609. To my ears, the SM57 was a bit muddy sounding and the e609 was much clearer. It handles both clean and OD/distortion sounds. I am playing a Yamaha RS720B through a Vox Night Train.

Great guitar amp (and toms) mic

By Greg F. from Ohio
Music Background: Former commercial studio owner - now home studio dude

This mic is a great upgrade from their 409 model. I got a great sound from the 409s on drum toms in the past. I haven't had the opportunity to use this 609 on toms, but I am using them on guitar amps and they are great at capturing the guitar amp sound. Also these seem to do a good job of ignoring off angle background sound. All this for $100 which is a great deal.
Highly recommend it for guitar and toms

Clearly better

By Cristo
Music Background: Producer, songwriter, musician

I was using an low-budget Apex large diagram condenser mic to record my guitar amp and I thought it was good enough. However, as soon as I got the Sennheiser and recorded the exact same guitar parts for comparison, it was clear that this mic sounded much better. Plus, the shape of the microphone works much better in the compact isolation box that I am use.

Fantastic Mic

By Sweetwater Customer

The two Sennheiser e609 I purchased were for my daughter and son-in-law that do sound for local bands in Gettysburg. They both are music technology majors (behind the scene people) and love the mic. In fact they told me about this mic and how great they were when they used them in college when setting up for the stage performances.

You can't go wrong!

Great Mic!

By Steven E. from OCEANSIDE, CA

I have three of these, used them for the first time 2/1/20. They worked great, I did online review research and decided to take a chance, glad I bought them. I got lucky and caught them on sale. I like them more than my SM57's. The band likes them better too. Don't need stands with these so there is less stuff to deal with and knock around on a tight stage. I think they sound better too. Don't get me wrong, the SM57 is a very good mike and a durable workhorse recommended and used by many.

It's Ok - Better At a Distance Or for Drums

By BikerGuy from Eastern Washington
Music Background: Armature guitar over 30 years in different bands

I like my SM57 but my space is cramped and got this to hang over the cab and free up some room. But the low end bump at that close distance doesn't work for me. I play clean most the time, neck or middle/neck humbucker, and it's just way too boomy. Take a look at the frequency response. The low end bump is less prominent at a distance, and at 1 meter flattens out, and also sounds very good there to my ears. But a mic stand 1 meter from the cab doesn't work in my recording space so will stick with the SM57. But it's a good mic... many have mentioned it works great on a Snare or Toms, so donating it to our drummer.

Quick & easy way to mic my amp

By Robert B. from OH

I was looking for an effective way to mic my amp so that I could record myself on my PC through my mixer. I was drawn to this mic because of it's design and being able to simply hang it over the top of my amp. It was quick and easy to setup, and sounds great.

Yes!

By Sweetwater Customer from Georgia
Music Background: Accomplished

Love the shape, very convenient to get in place. I’m using in my home studio with a ‘57 also.....Sounds awesome. You DO have to move it around to find the sweet spot, much like a ‘57. Seems to have a bit better bass response than the shure. I place it on the edge of speaker cone, not in the center, and blend the 2 signals together! Would also use this on a live rig with no worries at all. 5 stars!

Great for recording guitar!!

By Mike from New York
Music Background: Guitarist, vocalist, composer (over 30 years experience)

Was thinking of getting two Shure 57s to mic two amps after splitting my signal. Chris Barry told me about the e 609, thank you Chris!! Both microphones are great, but they have slightly different recording parameters: recording the guitar through two different amps with two different mics on to two separate tracks gives me great options and really enriches the sound. Thank you Chris and Sweetwater for your great advice, great prices, and amazing customer service.

Totally worth the coin

By Daniel from Alaska

I much prefer this to an SM57. It reproduces what my rig sounds like without any coloration. I gig a min of 3x's a week and use her in the studio. After the first gig the other guitarist in my band said he was going to switch mics. While it does hang over the amp I did by a small stand with mini boom for optimal placement. It's a mic, you can even use it for vocals for a different flavor.Very happy with this purchase.I'm going to be upgrading my stage vocal mic with a Sennheiser next.Dare to be different and get a better mic in the process.

Sennheiser e609 Microphone

By Lido R. from Rhode Island
Music Background: Music & Visual Artist

I love it ! I was previously using the Shure SM57's to mic my amps until I discovered the Sennheiser e609 mic. Since, the e609 is a super-cardioid mic & has a "lolly-pop shape", it reduces bleeding greatly from any other sounds produced in my home/studio. The sound from the e609 mic is crisp and clear. Also, the e609 hangs easily over my amp's speaker directly from the mic cable meaning that no mic stand is required. And, with the e609 mic, what I hear from the amp is exactly what I hear through my monitor speakers &/or headphones. I use the e609 on all my amps for clarity of sound and ease at a very surprisingly affordable price.

Excellent

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Over 50 years of playing, gigging, and recording.

Excellent sounding tracks with this mic. The tracks I've been recording with this have a lot more vibrancy and punch, a minimal amount of EQ is required. I love the ease of use, just hang it front of your amp and that's pretty much it. The following tune was a quick jam recorded with this mic - I recorded the rhythm track and solo track from a mic'd Magnatone Sweet 15. So far I'm loving this mic!

Super Mic

By Paul B. from Mount Airy, NC
Music Background: Been playing music of various genres for over 50 years. Still rockin'.

I purchased this mic after comparing it to the SM57, the defacto standard for miking guitar cabs. I liked the fact that it's a super-cardioid pattern, and the side-address keeps it closer to the cabinet, so I don't bump it as often on small stages. Although, It's tough to determine what it sounds like "out front", I've had people tell me that my guitar sounds great. I also use a Sennheiser as my vocal mic and love it, so that was a factor as well. I can highly recommend it.

Sweetwater In General

By David S. from Columbus, Ohio

I could give details about this particular transaction on its own, which went wonderfully, but I"d like to add more, so stay tuned, please, haha...

The Sennheiser e09 mic that I bought is incredible, but Sweetwater made the deal sweeter: the mic was pretty much the standard, brand new price… but for $... more you could get a really nice XLR cable and some groovy accessories!! It"s those extra necessities that one tends to forget about that really piles up there price on items that you let slip your mind and that made this deal exceptional. Thank you, Sweetwater!

My general notes on your company and my appreciation are newly forged; my friend lives in Fort Wayne and he had me come to GearFest for the first time this year. It was incredible!
Yes, the mainway lined with tents full of items and demonstrations was every musician"s dream, as was the actual store and the seminars, but the real difference to this event and others was an apparently well-structured and instilled sense of Positivity from the staff and Sweetwater in general! I"ve never experienced anything like it at any similar event of any kind! It was fascinating and has actually made an instantly excited newfound customer out of me! This attitude is not a cheesy over-tge-too hardsell, nor is it an undersell in showing little effort or concern for the customer, it is a genuinely friendly and fair standard that I now believe Sweetwater presents itself with in any facet of their business, from one-in-one customer sales to checkout. It makes you want to work there, haha! Well, we"ll done to whomever arranged this at the top of the organisation all the way down to all staff members! That attitude is what I have taken with me from GearFest and will have me as a lifetime customer to your company! Well, we"ll done!

I"m a man of limited means and buying new gear at Sweetwater of any brand new equipment sellers sometimes is a bit much for my wallet and I"ll often look for cheaper deals at used sites or auctions (as an ironic example, my only purchase at GF was a used Epiphone Les Paul, but I have bought a few items straight from your online store since), but the excitement your company has generated will always have me go to your webpage FIRST if I do intend to seriously buy anything new! Your selection, deals, guaranteed shipping and customer satisfaction, ALL done in a friendly, upbeat and yet completely sincere standard cannot be praised highly enough! Thank you Sweetwater, I hope to come to Fort Wayne and see you again, at least at GF 2020 but definitely and continually online!

Great Clean Tones

By Michael K. from New York
Music Background: Guitarist, vocalist, composer (over 30 years experience)

I am using this for recording guitar amps, often paired with a Shure SM57, and sometimes an Audio Technica AT2050. The tones it delivers vary from the other two microphones, which is exactly what I wanted: blending all three together off one amp, using different cone positions, or mic-ing the back of the amp, varying distances, mic-ing three different amps, ... the possibilities are huge. Great price, great performance, and as always Chris Barry was amazing: when I was talking to him about the SM57 he mentioned the e 609 - I checked it out and got one, so glad I went with his recommendation, thank you Chris!!!

a bit too light

By Alex from Pittsburgh , PA
Music Background: in debt

I was kind of sold on the selling point that it just hangs over the front of the amp for a quick close mic placement. However, it's so light that it starts to twist in whatever direction that the mic cable decides to rest. Don't really want to duct tape it to my grill so, Ill probably experiment with attaching some sort of weight. As far as sound....It seems a little more scooped which is what I was looking for, seeing as how my intention was to blend it with my radial jdx box( which is eq'd to sound like an sm57 direct). In this setting I got a pretty good sound , panning the two tracks with little to no effort. Bottom line....not bad for the price

Better be loud

By Geo

This mike picks up stray sound big time. In a recording application it might work if only one amp is used. In a live situation the amp has to be really loud otherwise it picks up other sounds. My amp is next to the drums and this mike picks up alot of drum sounds. Im using a mike to make it so I can turn my amp down on stage and at rehearsal. I use the monitors to hear my amp. Because the black backside of the mic is picking sound too it picks up stray noise. I did a live show outside where we had the amps really cranked. The mike worked well then because the mic was over powered by the blatant volume of the amp. If your not cranked up this mike perfoms poorly. I went back to my 57. Old faithful.

Sennheiser e609 Microphone

By Lido R. from Rhode Island

This is a really well engineered guitar microphone! For the price, quality, and tiny "real-estate" (no mic stands needed), this mic is strongly suggested. When I tried it against the "standard dynamic guitar mic" of the industry, I couldn't hear the difference. By far, my favorite mic for electric guitar speaker cabs.

By Tim M.
Music Background: Guitarist, Drummer, Songwriter,Producer, Engineer

I used my new Sennheiser e609 on a Hi-Watt DR-103 half stack in a live situation last night for the first time and even the bass player noticed how it sounded exactly like the amp...I've seen only a couple of reviews where people didn't like it compared to the Sm57...I've used 57's for years exclusively....no more...not on my Hi Watt or Marshalls or my li'l '66 Vibro-Champ which sounds like a Dual Showman through this mic...placement: out towards the edge of the speaker where it still "hears" plenty of cone giving a nice full smooth response....it has a slight bump at 4.2khz and thats why it works so well out towards the rim and flush to the grille....those who said it colored their sound are probably just hearing their tone for the first time.

Un-pretty on guitars

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Professional engineer

Creates an un-pretty guitar tone that can't be fixed with EQ. Seems to comb filter rich mid-tones and remove all sparkle. Narrow and nasal sounding. Users like the simplicity of just draping over the top of a guitar cabinet, but that zero effort approach produces zero result. If you must use this mic on guitar, use a stand and take the time to position it a few inches away from the cone and find the sweet spot.

Yes, Virginia, you can use this as a Snare Drum Mike

By bigmeow =.
Music Background: Home studio

Because it has roughly in the same frequency range as snare drum, it has so small of a footprint, and it is extremely directional, this does make a decent snare drum mike. Just stick it pointing straight down at the 12 o'clock position on your snare behind the rack tom where you'll never hit it with a stick. An SM57 will get you a better sound, but it takes up a lot more space, since you have to come in at least at a 45 degree angle. This mike will never get in your way.

Great!

By Zach H. from Johnson City, TN

Excellent mic, I had to make a choice between this and the Shure sm57, which I have owned before, and decided to go with this. No regrets from me! I mainly recording an EVH 5150 iii 50watt and it handles the extremely high gain very well.

Highly recommend!

Great Cab Mic

By Miguel from Brazoria Co, TX
Music Background: Noob

I had some cheap vocal mics that did OK, but lacked bottom end sensitivity and, because my 1x12 cab is on an angled stand, I always had to watch out for the mic stand whenever I turned on/adjusted/plugged in /etc with my amp. This mic picks every nuance from my cab, so recordings sound just like the real thing, and now the floor space in front of my amp is clear of trip hazards.

I've had one of these for recording my guitar amp. I used to use the sm57, these did not have the noise that I have come to expect in sm57's. I got two more for drum mics they are extremely good for this as well, as I have come to find out. I will buy more when budget allows for all the drum heads.

Great Microphone!!!!

By Robert O. from Champaign, IL

I love this microphone. It's so easy to set up, with less room for error. I use this, and a SM57 to mic my second guitar amp (for stereo sound). I would say that I'm equally impressed (if not more) with this microphone. It does not require a mic stand, but you can use one if you have one.

Sweetwater sent this out to me promptly and I had it in a day. Awesome service and great support—like always!!!

Great for up close and personal with louder volumes. At lower volumes I would not recommend this mic. Sennheiser mics have proven to be good workhorses for me for the past couple of decades, hoping this will perform the same.

Sennheiser e609

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: 4+ years

Let us just say this is exactly what I was looking for in a microphone for recording an amp. This is close to an SM57 however, without the need for a stand. Now since I got this mic, I actually record my amp with both mics, as that allows me to capture all of the sound of the amp while recording. The SM57 I have pointed and the direct middle, with the e609 off to one side. Works and sounds great!

What you hear is what you get

By Paul N. from Somewhere in Colorado...
Music Background: touring/recording/licensing/MI industry

You really can't beat what you get for the price. We used to mic amps with these for live shows when I was touring, and they always did a great job with rejecting stage noise and being the simplest to setup- so I finally decided to come back to them for mic'ing things up for my own studio- and I have to say that after years of futzing with 57s and condensers and off/on axis etc.- it is INSANE to be hanging a mic over my vox amp and pretty much not thinking about it after that. The tone I hear in the room is what goes down on tape/hard drive/whatever future thing we find ourselves using- I typically send it through a Neve 88RS emulation in my UA interface- but even without it, the results sit exactly where I need them in the mix and the only EQing I find myself doing after is purely for the aesthetic of the production or the needs of the mix.
Obviously, you won't record something better than you put in- so if your rig is noisy or your interface/mixer is a nightmare, these probably won't fix that- but if you are tone obsessed and have already invested in clean power supplies etc., you'll be happy- and you'll probably slap yourself periodically for not doing this sooner.
So... you know... get this. You'll be back to buy more of them...

A $100 dollar mic for a $1000 tone !

By Juan M.

Since I record guitar amps with the e609 (and the e906 too) I can't hardly think of a safe alternative. They deliver a fantastic "ready to mix" tone out of any amplifier. I hardly need to eq too much. The curve is great !

Great Guitar Mic

By Jon M. from Clarksburg, WV

Great mic for any kind of guitar speaker cabinet you use it on. And to be clear it does not sound like a Shure SM57. They are both great mic's but different in just about every way possible. First off the way you can use the mic - instead of using a mic stand, you can simply run the cord through the handle and hang the mic where you want in front of the speaker. It is very light on weight and streamline. Making it easy to use just about anywhere. The Sennheiser e609 delivers a lot of punch but also has a more even tone from top to bottom than the 57. Note: This is nothing against the SM57 because I use both. The e609 has a lot of mid range clarity that is all its own. I have used the e609 for scratch vocal take when recording demo's and works really well. Very different compared to my Shure SM7 that I normally use but it has a flat response with out much color and is very clear. If you want a great mic you would not go wrong purchasing the Sennheiser e609.

Sennheiser e 609

By John A.

The Sennheiser 609 is a great microphone for miking guitar cabinets and drums. Although I am sure it might be used for more than that. I was having an issue recording drums with a SM 57/58 and did not want to use 421s for some clients because of the profile. The 609 has a lower profile and gives a flatter response than 57/58s and takes high DB levels, is clean and is built solid well worth the going price.

This is what it sounds like when lightening strikes!

By Sweetwater Customer

Two days ago, we recorded an outstanding tenor sax player using the e609. The results? The musician who recorded the tracks LOVED the way his sax sounded. I have used this microphone on snare drum with great success. It's a great way to minimize hi-hat bleed. Of course, it sounds amazing on almost any guitar amp you put it on. This can be an excellent microphone to begin with if, you are going for that trashed out AM radio sound as, a vocal effect. I've owned an e609 for over 10 years. Trust me, this is no one trick pony, it's a workhorse. Buy at least one, you won't be sorry.

This is a killer microphone!

By Sweetwater Customer

I had to give this 4.5 stars because it requires a proprietary clamp (it comes with it) if you wanna use it on a stand. If you lose that clamp, I dunno how long it's gonna take to get a new one. Sure, You can hang this mic over the top of the amp but that's not a position I would use.

The mic itself is astoundingly accurate for recording guitars and has cut my tweaking time down dramatically. Why? Because unlike my Shure SM57, it handles the correct dynamic range for mid-range instruments. This is an affordable home run for Sennheiser.

By Hampton from NC
Music Background: Recording Engineer, Sound Designer, Active Musician

So, I've owned my e609 for a bout 7 years. Used it for a show last week, just to show you it's still 100%.
I've used it in the studio, but that's not it's forte. I pair it with an AKG 414 for some heavy rhythmic tones but this mic belongs on the road!
I'm a fan of Shure sm47's but this mic just really works with my set up. the ease of use and how quickly you can just set it over the cab can make a big difference.
The Sound:
It is a bit raspy (treble happy) but in reality that's the kind of signal that the board operator wants and can work with. I've tried it with some snares just to see how it sounded and thought it was pretty good but still better off just throwing on a guitar cab.

All in all, Fantastic guitar mic, road worthy and dependable, just don't try to get creative with this one.

Best Microphone for Guitar Amps

By Gus L. from Los Angeles, CA

Live Sound

By Sweetwater Customer from Indiana
Music Background: Live Sound Engineer, Recording Engineer, Guitarist

I haven't had a chance to shoot out with the sm57, but one thing I love about this mic is its ability to lie flat on the grill by hanging the cable through the handle loop of many amps. Now this might seems superficial, but in a live situation, sometimes stands can be limited. and a full band with brass section and 5 vox might push that limitation. This fact of hanging the mic can get you out of a few sticky situations. Tonally, I have had zero problem with getting a good guitar tone out of these live.

Sennheiser e609 mic is excellent

By Sweetwater Customer from Ann Arbor, MI
Music Background: musician & recording engineer

This mic is an outstanding value for guitar amp sound. I got it predominantly for live sound, but am now also using it in the studio.
It has a good balanced sound, and is easy to use as it doesn't require a mic stand: just hang it in front of your speaker and you're good to go.
I use a boutique tube amp, and I feel that it captures the rich tone and dynamics accurately. Sure, you can find better mics for studio applications, but they will cost substantially more.
If you are playing live or doing your own studio recording on a budget, and can only get one mic, than this is the mic to have.
For studio recording, I pair the e609 with a Rode NT1-A condenser mic, and get outstanding sound. For live sound, I just use the e609.

this has become my new go to mic for guitar amps.

I used this mic doing rythym and lead guitar tracks in the studio. Recorded the same tracks with another popular mic that I have been using for quite sometime. I was quite supprised at the difference in sound comparing both mics during playback. The e609 has a much warmer and less compressed sound than the other mic being compaired.
I hignly recommend you to give this mic a try. I think you will be quite pleased with the results. I may have to add one or two more to my mic box.

Not a Guitar Mic, but...snare, maybe?

By Brian M. from Nashville, TN
Music Background: Recording, Mixing, and Mastering Engineer

Relatively speaking, the e609 silver should be able to compare with a Shure SM57. It does (well, sort of). It competes in the same sort of range and tonality, but it's very brittle and nasal with even a half-stack amp blasting into it. I tried this mic on several different cabinets, at many different positions and distances. On it's own it just sounded incredibly hyped in the highs. Very shrill and ear-piercing for me. Paired with a Royer, we found some better, but still not 100% useable results. So, personally, I wouldn't use it on a guitar at all. What did, however have great success with was the bottom of a snare drum! Depending on the snare, of course, but paired with an SM57 on the top, some great overheads, and the e609 Silver on the bottom, we found it to really shine exactly where we needed it to! I don't regret buying this mic at all. For the price, it's a great alternative to the 57, and can serve up a little brighter when you need a little more grit.

What a great mic! I use these to mic steel pans from above on a very loud stage. Previously used 57's or 58's placed below. All of our FOH engineers are absolutely blown away by the difference. Less bleed, warmer sound, no feedback issues...you name it. Obviously an industry standard for guitar cabs, and fantastic for this application as well.

Incredible clean sounding microphones tuned perfectly for guitars. The mics are idiot proof and a no brainer. Stickem' on a stand or drape it over the cab, can't go wrong. Sounds great when you put one on the front of the cab and another behind the speaker, just don't forget to flip that phase or you'll be like, "Huh?, that can't be right." Great for horns and trumpets too! This mic will remind you why sm57's are only a standard but not a must have. If you have some extra moolah, add a couple of these puppies to your rig.

As a singing drummer I was looking for a very low profile mic I could position in front of my mouth without protruding out and getting smacked with a stick. I also wanted a mic that minimized bleed from the snare, etc. Just for the heck of it I tired the e609 and, with a tiny bit of EQ, it worked surprisingly well. I know it's not marketed as a vocal mic and it may not suit every voice but it sure solved my problems quite nicely.

Something to consider

By Studio 1. from Kalamazoo, MI
Music Background: Recording Engineer

My goal is to get the sound I hear from the amp through the microphone.Close mic'ing will naturally compromise the sound somewhat. Head to head with a SM57 this mic degrades the tone more significantly. But that is a matter of personal taste. This mic can be useful, tracks can sit well in the mix. There are a few things to consider. This mic likes amps that are running "Loud", it does not sound good in the center of the speaker, and the low end bump does not enhance your sound. This mic is easier to set up than any other,
and placement is critical for the sound. ( When is it not?) I do know you
can get good results with this mic, but it is not without issues.

Perfect live mic!

By Nick B. from Chicago
Music Background: Weekend warrior!

This mic cannot be any easier. Put in in front of your amp, listen, adjust and ignore. I cannot speak to studio usages. My amp sounds like "my amp mic'd" going through the mains! No noticeable coloration. And aweomely, no stand in front of my amp to deal with anymore!

Like all mics the proper placement and EQ'ing is important. I find the amp's sweet-spot usually on the first go and at the board it's a breeze. Start flat, find the proper mic point, and carve out anywhere that's not exactly perfect!

I found problems at first when I didn't realize that if the amp is tilted the mic can move or if the cable has too much memory it can twist. Easy solves! (duct tape)

Expected more.

By Brian from Grand Rapids, MI USA
Music Background: Professional Recording Engineer and Live sound Engineer

I bought this mic along with some SM57's to have a little bit of variety in my collection. For guitars I'm not all that thrilled by it. It seems to have a nasally tone to it. The 57's have a bit more bite in the high end. I feel that it could do well for rhythm guitar tracks though. I have had a little more luck on drums though. Under the snare worked great and it also worked on a toms pretty well too. It's shape makes it nice for different situations too.

No Wow, But Nice

By Michael S. from Portland, In.
Music Background: Home Studio Recordist/Musician

I read an article in Recording magazine about how to avoid frequency build up in your guitar tracks and the most simple solution was to not mic everything with a SM57. So thus the reason for buying thismic. I did a shoot-out of sorts and ran both through my Grace m101 pre into a Presonus Comp 16. The Sennheiser was better at capturing the lower frequencies, and that was about the only difference my ears could discern. I would buy this mic again because I believe it is simply a different brush with which to paint my musical canvas.

Andy

By Andy from Colorado
Music Background: Pro Musician, Recording Enthusiast

The e609 is a good mic. It gets the job done, looks good and is convenient. I think a lot of it's popularity is due to the form factor. Just hang it in front of your grill - no mic stand required - ver rock n roll. However, if you want to upgrade to a great guitar cab mic, spend a little more and get an MD421. Sounds better, more versatile - just don't let your drummer near it or you won't get it back. But, if this is how far your budget will stretch, it will get you heard nicely.

No MD-409

By Brandon from Seattle, WA
Music Background: full time engineer

First, for the price, the 609 silver is an OK mic for certain things.
But just to clear any confusion that this might be the alternative to finding an original MD 409, it is not. (I haven't heard an e906. Maybe it's better.) Just to remind myself, I went back out to the studio to compare them side by side again on electric guitar. Compared to a 409, the 609 silver is nothing like it. The 409 sounded natural, balanced and full. It sounded like my guitar going though my amp. The 609 is voiced quite differently. The low end bump is voiced much higher into the (honky) low mids, and there is a sharp high peak that sounds pretty edgy and unnatural to me. The strangest thing is compared to the 409, and other mics I put up, the tone of the 609 almost sounds like something is partly out of phase. Odd. I went in there trying to like it again, but I just reminded myself why I haven't used it in a while. For even less money, I'd get an Audix i5 if you want something different than your 57's. Or just be done with it and get yourself a Royer! :-)

Just what I was looking for!

By Mike from Springfield, OH
Music Background: Recording engineer, pro musician

I have previously owned and ran a project studio some 10 years ago and now am getting back into it again. So, I'm in the early stages of aquiring some decent mics. My first project was to find a good mic for guitar amps. In the past I had always used SM57's and found them capable but not exactly the best. I wanted something this time around that wouldn't color the sound as much as an SM57. Well with this E609 I have found just that. It has all that familliar bite and attack of an SM57 but it stays less colored or compressed just like I wanted. So far I haven't had to add any EQ on my guitar tracks with this mic, it is just perfect for my taste. I have mixed it with a condeser mic to give it a more airy feel which worked out great. This is my first experience with Sennheiser mics and after such a great response I got my eyes on some others to check out now.

SWEET!

By Kiril from Salt Lake City, UT USA
Music Background: Recording Artist/Producer

It took all but 10 minuets of tinkering to get this mic to sound good. I have read reviews that claim it to be "boomy", or "mid-rangy". I have found that a tiny boost in the high shelf (+2 or 3 db), will bring out the best in this mic. The low end and mid-range can go untouched. Or you can use subtractive EQ to acquire the same effect. It sounds very full, clear and transparent. I cant wait to try it out on some percussion instruments. I am very happy with this mic. I will likely buy one more.
