Sennheiser e 604 Cardioid Dynamic Drum Microphone Reviews

Dynamic Cardioid Clip-on Snare/Tom Mic with Pivoting Mount

The e604 from Sennheiser is a high-SPL handling (more than 160dB) cardioid microphone, optimized for use on drum sets and other percussion miking applications. The e604 microphone actually comes with an integrated, pivoting mount that can screw directly onto mic stands or attach to the rim of a drum, making setup very efficient. A balanced, clear, low-distortion signal from the e604 is similar to a high-end studio condenser microphone. A lightweight voice coil provides extended high frequency and rapid transient response. This quality drum mic is housed in a tough, reinforced glass fiber body designed to suppress impact noise. If you're looking to mic your toms or snare, the e604 is a dynamic mic ready for the job!

Great drum mic!

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Drums/Vocals/Live Sound

I have several of these that I'll use on any drum with a rim. I also use one as an IEM communication mic so the band can hear each other talk at the drum kit. Mounted it to my existing Rack Tom mic and plugged into a ProCo Sign Off foot switch to turn on when needed.

Great Drum Mic!

By Jeff B. from Erie, PA
Music Background: Drums/Vocals/Live Sound

I have used e604's for decades now and I love how quick and easily they mount to a drum rim. These are very light weight and awesome sounding drum mics. Usually used on toms and sometimes snare.

Senhauser e604

By Bob M. from Vermont

I was looking at several low profile Mic for my snare drums. I talk to Clint, who is my Sweetwater guru. He recommend one that I hadn't even looked at... The senhauser e604.

I never buy anything without consulting Clint first. I've been dealing with Clint for many years. He never steered me wrong and kept me away from some bad decisions.

The e604 is perfect for my needs. And it comes with a simple to use drum mount. Great for toms and snare drums!!!

Best Tom mics for the money

By Aaron G. from Arcata California
Music Background: Drummer/Audio Engineer

I don't even question what mic I'm going to put on toms, live or in the studio, these puppies will get the job done. Better than the other $ option imho.

Good for a Bodhran

By Christopher B. from Sykesville, MD

You have to duck tape the clip to a crossbar, but it amplifies the bodhran very well. Do they sell a separate bodhran clip? If so, 5/5 for sure. The sound quality is fantastic

Love It

By Erik S. from Coopersburg, PA
Music Background: Studio Engineer, Composer & Drummer

My favorite tom mic. It captures both the attack and sustain of my Tama Superstar Classic toms. There's not much else to say about them; they sound great, are easy to place, and will last you forever. They also use some of the same tech found in Sennheiser's legendary MD421, but without the bulk or need for extra mic stands. The clip is durable, flexible, and silent. I can't recommend the e604 (or the e600 series in general) enough!

E604 is a good microphone

By Sweetwater Customer

It's very reliable and I like the fact it's a small enough mic I can fit it in anywhere in my kit and the audio quality is very good.

Awesome drum mics!!

By Ron R. from Roy, Utah
Music Background: Drummer 50 years experience

The Sennheiser 604's are unbelievable little mic's. You can't beat the sound as I believe they are absolutely the best tom mics I've ever used. Their size and rim mounting system work great. No mic stands or worry over room for the mic's. For toms you can't beat them in my opinion.

Sennheiser e604

By Robert I. from Shreveport, Louisiana Area
Music Background: Pro Musician 40+ Years, Sound Tech

These are handy little mics! I use mine mostly for rack toms, but they do a decent job on other loud sources when space is very tight. I would recommend a set of 3 for every mic locker.

It's a great Percussion Mic, too!

By C S. from GA
Music Background: Worship Leader, Engineer, Church Systems Design

Just to add to the conversation with something different-- I absolutely love the sound I get from these mics on hand percussion. I use these guys on bongos, congas, djembe, front of a cajon... Picks up the nuisances of the percussionist very well in live performances without feedback issues. The tone is clear, snappy without being harsh, yet gets the mid-range tones with good presence so that the earthy tones of hand percussion comes through the mix.

Embarrassing True Story: One of these little guys snuck into my laundry once, and survived the washing machine! I was sure I had killed one of my favorite mics, but after giving it a couple days to be sure it dried out, I plugged it up and it worked fine. Under critical listening, it did sound a bit different after soap and water, but not enough to bother with. Once back in the rotation, I never could tell from FOH which of those three e604s took the plunge.

Bought them originally for an alternate sound on drums (we also have Audix DP7 kit, and BeyerDynamic TG Drum Set Pro XL, plus add ins like a self made speaker mic, a Sennheiser e602, and Shure SM57). There's no 'best' they are all just different. I switch them up depending on the drummer and the type of set. On toms they're a good midline between the punchiness of the Audix d2 / d4 and the clean D58c. For snare, it's really the snare-- we have a few snare drums that roll through the rotation, and I vary the SM57, 5i, D58c, and e604 depending... Okay, actually, I use the D58c on the bottom of a snare, and vary the other three on the top. Certainly give them a try and see if they fit the sound you're going for.

Used these for years

By Joe G.
Music Background: home recording studio 10+ years

I had 4 of these that I used for well over 10 years. They work well and hold up. I had to buy a replacement after one of the took one too many direct hits... but after 10 years I cannot complain. I use these on toms and have never had an issue.

"Plug n' Play"

By Matt from Tampa, FL
Music Background: Professional Full time Recording Engineer/Producer

I have long loved the sound of MD421s on toms (and kick for that matter) so when these came out and claimed to offer at least a little of that mojo in a compact package I was very interested. I've been around them a lot and know them to be great mics, but never owned my own until recently. I love that this is a versatile mic that can be used with good results on a lot of stuff other than just toms - snare, amps, horns, even kick. This is the type of mic that seems to work with very little effort.

I recently put this on a steel snare with a coated head and without touching a thing it was just an absolutely fantastic sound. Crisp, good body, nice fundamental and just the right amount of ring to it. I tried a couple of other mics next to it and they both required substantially more EQ to sit right in the mix than did the E604 track.

Love it. gotta have more.

I Love this mics for Drums

By Gregg T. from Elko,NV
Music Background: Recording Engineer

The e604 uses a capsule similar to the MD421. You can recreate the drum tone with a natural roll off on the highs. I use it to get that clean/deep tom sound. I love the frequency range it offers. I also like this mic for distorted guitars in certain cases. The new e604 has a better shock mount than the older one.

The e 604 and the may mic setup

By Drummin93 from Saint Paul,VA.
Music Background: Pro Musician

You guys will not believe the sound this setup makes. I've been drumming now for 12 years and I'm blown away by the sound quality. The sm 57 were my first choice, always, untill a friend let me here his setup w// the 604's. Well' that did it!!! and when I heard bout the May mic system, that just put it over the top!! I play aggressive, and the clip-on style just got in my way of playing. If you're a real drummer, and want to get rid of all the "in the way mics", then the may mic w/ the e604's are the way to go!!
