Fender Player Duo-Sonic - Desert Sand Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Alder Body, Maple Neck/Fretboard, and 2 Single-coil Pickups - Desert Sand

Ever since 1956 the Fender Duo-Sonic solidbody electric guitar has been the choice of adventurous musicians that dig Fender style, but want something a little different than a Tele or a Strat. The Player Duo-Sonic's unique voice is due to its 24" scale length — it's got a vibrant sound, and it also makes for a very playable instrument. It's got a slinky feel, extended chords are easier to finger, and you can pull off multi-step bends easily. A pair of single-coil pickups deliver sweet, glassy Fender tone, with sound-shaping provided by a three-way selector and Master Volume and Tone controls. Beginners and experts alike agree that there's a lot to love about the Fender Player Duo-Sonic.

Fender Duo Sonic

By Johnathan V. from Nashville, TN on June 23, 2023

This is a fantastic little guitar with loads of character and charm. It's quite compact which makes it a very easy and enjoyable playing instrument. The desert sand body, maple neck, gold anodized pickguard and white pickup covers make it a gorgeous looking guitar and easily one of the nicest I've seen. The only thing I wish it came with was vintage hardware which I'll be retrofitting soon, however the aesthetic as it comes is a nice nod to the original 50s era Duo Sonic, especially for the price. Shipping was super fast and I would highly recommend getting one of these!

A Perfect Fit

By Thomas Mackey from Madison, Wi on August 15, 2020 Music Background: Decades of musical dithering w/guitar and harmonica

OK, I liked it right out of the box- the look is great, the construction is solid. But once I put on a set of NYXLs and set it up, "like" turned to love! So easy to play, so fabulously Fender-y! Of course, being a Fender, it has treble and bite to spare; but you can also get a great jazz tone with the neck pickup and a clean amp setting. Both pickups together give you that great "cluck." Volume and Tone controls are musical throughout their range. And the neck- the back is satin finished, the fretboard is well finished, and it's effortless to play. Hard to put it down!
Thanks again to Ryan Murphy and everyone at Sweetwater for doing a great job during these trying times.

You Won't Regret it.

Get this guitar. That's it, just get it. Everything about this guitar is amazing. I would still give this five stars if it was twice as expensive. The neck is perfect and the scale length doesn't feel that small (and I have huge hands), it feels pretty much normal. It has the stability of a Tele but the sounds of Strat. STOP debating and pull the trigger on these wonderful duo sonics.

outstanding value

By Manny from kenosha, WI on May 22, 2020 Music Background: gigging musician

I bought this guitar not knowing what to expect and now its literally my favorite guitar from my more expensive collection of 10 guitars.
I love tele`s and strats too ,the best way to describe the sound of the Duo Sonic is that it`s a cross between tele and a strat .
It sounds amazing ,it`s very inspiring to play and listen to, very sweet tone, especially in clean or medium overdrive settings, but play it through a fuzz pedal and it sounds absolutely huge .
The neck feels great too, kind of a fuller C style neck that fills the hand nicely . These new Duo Sonics have a 24inch scale neck ,which is the same scale length as a Fender Jaguar and feels great even with big hands like mine. Overall an outstanding instrument ,I liked it so much I ended up buying two .
I might buy a third one ,because I think these guitars are destined to become wanted collectors pieces .The fit and finish is outstanding for the price ,it feels, plays and sounds like a more expensive instrument.I`ll definitely be gigging with my Duo Sonic. I`m hoping fender will release these in a nitro finish in the future. Either way ,great job Fender and a big thanks to SweetWater and Robby for helping me in selecting this fine instrument.

Not just a stripped down Strat

By Chris P. from New York, NY on March 3, 2022 Music Background: Session/gigging

This is a fun little guitar, I assumed when I bought it that it would sound like a Stratocaster and I was wrong.

The pickups are surprisingly high output, the bridge is very sharp, you really need to feather the tone knob to tame it but it sounds good once you find the sweet spot for your amp; the neck pickup is much, much warmer and you end up working the volume knob rather than the tone.

The shorter scale has been way easier to adjust to than I was expecting, it gets tight in the higher register but not so much that you trip over your fingers…it helps you out on faster runs.

I bought this guitar specifically to set up for Nashville tuning and the shorter scale definitely helped keep the tension comfortable with the higher strings so it was almost perfect for that application; it did require a new nut for that but the guitar was set up 10/10 out of the box for standard tuning. It's a quirky guitar and there are some things that will take a little getting used to but overall it's a great guitar.

Awesome tones

By Sweetwater Customer on December 26, 2020

I got this guitar yesterday, and its looks were almost as striking as its tones. Its the perfect guitar for players who want a Mustang, but don't want the strange switching system. I highly recommend the desert sands finish. I came in to a problem that disappointed me greatly though, and that is the fret buzz issue. I also purchased a Gibson Les Paul recently, and it had the same issue. I don't know if somebody is slacking off, but its annoying to hear all that buzz, and it is hard to find which fret it is coming from. But all in all, a great guitar nonetheless!

Duo Sonic

By Aaron from Washington on January 12, 2021 Music Background: Been playing guitar for over 30 years.

Not a bad guitar that's made in Mexico. I kind of wanted to get a beater guitar that had a shorter scale because I've never had one before, plus this was really light, which is good. Unfortunately mine arrived with the bridge pickup not working so I can't really do a good review. The neck pickup sounds fairly decent. The lacquer finish they have on the fret board is annoying making bends kind of sticky.
