TC Electronic Ampworx Dual Wreck Preamp Pedal Reviews

2-channel Amplifier Simulator Pedal with Footswitchable Pre/Post Boost, Presence Control, Cab Sim, DI, and USB

One of the heaviest-sounding models the Ampworx series has to offer, the TC Electronic Dual Wreck preamp pedal exactly emulates one of the most iconic high-gain amplifiers in modern guitar history. This pedal’s 2-channel configuration and channel-independent control scheme — including a 3-band EQ, Level/Gain, and Tight knob —allows you to instantly swap between two of your favorite double-rectifier-style sounds. Like its fellow high-gain Ampworx siblings, the Dual Wreck boasts a secondary footswitch that unlocks a hard-hitting boost that can either be placed before or after the preamp circuit for enhanced sonic versatility. A global Presence knob and cab sim-enabled DI out complete the package, adding up to a must-have pedalboard addition for any guitarist hunting after crushing high-gain tones in a pint-size pedal preamp format.

Awesome rig in a box!

By Thomas Patton from Columbia, TN on February 8, 2024

I was between this pedal and a Joyo Zombie. I was getting either one for mostly studio stuff so I can stop fiddling with amp sims and just plug in and rip. I finally decided on this one after considering the size it would take up when not in use. I knew I could toss it in a drawer and take it back out when needed.

I had no idea when I got it that the channels remembered the settings you set them to. I assumed that the knobs turning would alter the tone of both, but once you set a tone it will remember that tone for the next time you power it on.

I ran the DI out at a band practice to see how it sounded in our in-ear setup and it sounded great in a live setting.

Finally my experience with running it DI into my interface was a mixed bag. It sounds usable, but not exactly what I wanted. What I found worked for me was running from the output of the pedal to a reamp box (basically using it as an attenuator) then running the reamp box into a DI box then into my interface. In my DAW I pulled up my go-to GGD Zilla cab impulses and suddenly it sounded fuller and crisper than the DI out sounded. If I were to use this live I would pair it with a cab impulse pedal, but you could absolutely get by with just the DI out.

This is a $ dual rectifier. I think it's missing some of the sub harmonics that you'd get from a Mesa, but for a fraction of the price you honestly can't go wrong here.

Amazing amp emulation

By Josh on September 19, 2023

I just got this in a few weeks ago and plugged it in and was truly amazed by the sound quality of this pedal. I ran I through a Fender blues deluxe amp and instantly it sounded very close to the Mesa Boogie dual rectifier. For the price this is nearly spot on and makes my amp sound like a completely different amp for a fraction of the price. The knobs are all very intuitive and easy to dial in your favorite settings!! I highly recommend for the discerning tone enthusiast.

Killer Pedal

By Sweetwater Customer on September 14, 2023

The two channels both sound great. It's given me the tone I've always wanted but was never able to afford. I was convinced I would have to save up forever and buy a massive stack to get the sound I was looking for, but this pedal proved me wrong. It sounded massive when I used it at a gig, and it takes other pedals in front of it really well. I don't think it'll ever leave my board.

Great amp!!!!!

Not a boogie guy but this little amp is killer. Also it's nice to just throw this little guy in my back pack when I travel. I think I'm gonna grab the 5150 version next.

Hell of a little pedal

By Jason Barum from Winona, MN on August 18, 2023

Just received this and decided to use it for the first time at a gig. I use 2 amps usually but this venue was super tough to get up and down with 3 stories of steps. So instead I replaced my big Orange amp and cab with this dual wreck and I'll be damned it kicked ass. Sound guys both said once that Dual Wreck was blended in with my combo amp it took my tone to another level. I did this on the fly and it sounded awesome so I think I might be using this permanently. a steal.

Everything you want from a pedal

By Garot from NY on September 19, 2023 Music Background: semi-pro/hobbiest

This review will not be in direct comparison to how well this pedal compares to the "real thing" but man, it's really good regardless of that subjectivity.

The fact that it doesn't come with a power supply at this price point makes it less than a 5 as that is just ridiculous in my opinion, but I have plenty of them so it wasn't a huge issue, just annoyingly greedy.

As for the unit itself, it is nice and robust, so I will take it to shows and not worry that it will fall apart on stage. It performs like an amp for sure in the sense that Gain an dLevel work together very nicely.

There are plenty of nice YouTube videos out there showing this thing off and they don't do it justice in my opinion. The emulated output on this is outstanding and 100% usable in a recording setting for sure. I would also imagine it would be a great "front of house" direct option for live applications as well. The real takeaway here is that it really sounds good AND it is usable direct into a DAW. Not many products that I have had that have the "emulated DI" on them are actually usable sonically in a recording application, but this one is outstanding. I put it up there with the Line6 DI' which in my opinion are the best you are buy in that category.

Lastly the headphone output "works" but really doesn't sound "awesome" though not really sure why I would use that anyway, but was lacking in inspiration for me so I doubt I will use it for anything.

Overall to my ears, this thing sounds exactly as I think it should, has enough controls to get you a ton of sounds, is very subtle in response to playing or you can just put everything on full blast and let it rip. You will NOT be disappointed, and I would imagine all of the pedals in this line are similar, so I may be getting more of these.
