Excellent engineering and execution to product

By Doug R. from Sunnyvale, CA
Music Background: Heavy listener

I use this loudspeaker management system in a home environment. Along with the optional microphone, it was able to level my frequency response from 16 Hz through 16 kHz to +2, -3 dB. It has built-in equalization, an octave doubler, and many crossover response filters with speaker delay compensation for time alignment. It also has a compressor which in a home environment, I certainly don't want. In fact, the one function I would like to see added is an expander to improve the dynamic range of CDs.

Good enough for quick and dirty dsp

By Adam from Philadelphia, PA

Software is pretty rough, don't bother with the iPad app. Not to be confused with the Driverack line where you can load vendor-specific DSP models; this is JUST raw processing blocks (eq/dyn/xover/delay), with nothing user-loadable. Running REW/Smaart/OSM and pink noise will get you a better house curve than this thing's Wizard.

The bass synth (basically waves rbass) can be pretty handy when you need to cheat some more low end.

Quick and Easy Install and Use

By Jon W. from IA
Music Background: Church Technology Administrator

Recently while doing some updates to our sanctuary sound system we chose to upgrade to the Venu from an old DragNet controlled DSP. The Venu was so easy to program using the free software on either an iPad or PC that it only took a half hour to learn where things were how it was setup and transfer crossover and delay settings from the old unit into this new one. Was a bit of a strange start to using it as I didn't realize it was setup for 3 inputs and I wanted to send it a mono but was very easy to update how that worked from the software. I highly recommend using the software to do the configs then the dial to switch configs if you need that.

iPad software unusable on iPadOS 16.1

By Thomas S. from SAINT PAUL, MN

This is a great piece of hardware that will help you consistently fill out your sound in a variety of venues. However, the iPad app is seven years old and no longer works on iPadOS 16.1. It's really disappointing to have a new piece of hardware that advertises a software app, but fails work on contemporary operating systems and devices. Without the iPad app the user experience is severely impacted.

Good option with a design flaw

By Jon from Detroit, MI

To get the bad out of the way, early models of these had a design flaw with the power inlet cables to the PCB board and could cause the unit to stop passing audio. Easy fix luckily, just solder them directly to the PCB board and heat shrink over the metal. This has been rectified but I'd advise you to check when you order.

That said, for the price these are decent units. Lots of routing options and I/O possible. You can actually do two stereo AES inputs and 1 analog input (5 inputs) and mix them into your processing. Convenient if you're swapping between consoles mid show (they both must have AES outputs)

Sounds great, not as great as a Lake but at less than half the cost it's a good tradeoff.

The time alignment adjusts by .06ms so you can't go from lets say 3.11ms to 3.12ms, you'd jump from 3.11ms to 3.17ms. When time aligning drivers it would be nice to have higher resolution but that's just me being picky.

Without the design flaw, and the .06ms limitation, I'd give this 5*. Those shortfalls bring this down to 4 for me.

Very nice...

By Mark S.
Music Background: Audio professional, and musician.

Owned and used the 260 model for a time, I find the 360 a major step up. D/A converters are much quieter, and the iPad app is nice. No more RS232. Yay.

Fantastic value!

By jt b. from Central Ohio

I just installed two of these processors in a local venue that has L/C/R flown arrays with front fills on the stage lip, under balcony delays in back and subs on the ground. The venue's 20 year old speaker DSP finally failed, the budget was tight and no time could be wasted as the venue was booked. I usually use Dolby (now Lab.gruppen) Lake processors in most systems I deploy, so I am used to high quality sound and convenience of set-up and operation using a wireless tablet. I thought I would try these new dbx VENU360 units. I am totally impressed! These not only sound better than all previous versions of DriveRack, they sound better than many of the competitors (Lake, notwithstanding). The new control app for computers and tablets works perfectly. I networked these two units to a single WiFi router and could switch between the two on my iPad. I had the whole system wired in and networked in no time and I loaded files I pre-programmed (for routing and DSP modules) using the computer control app in Virtual mode. A few hours of system calibration, time/phase aligning and tuning had the venue's sound system sounding better than ever! The staff tech director was thrilled! A comparable Lake system would have run around $5500 - this pair of dbx VENU360s streets for $1400! This is the best value and bang-for-your-buck of any speaker DSP I have ever encountered. Get it!

A vital component for my mobile mix rig

By Matthew C. from San Angelo, TX
Music Background: Studio & Live Sound

I've never used a PA processor before, and I'm a novice sound guy anyway, so I really don't have a baseline against which to compare. However, I can say this machine is fantastic. The Wizards made setup and configuration painless, and it was fairly simple to see how things were configured.

When I ran the AutoEQ and the system made the sine sweeps, the band members were like, "What the heck is that?" I grinned and said, "Oh, just sound guy stuff, you wouldn't understand." They just laughed, but I could tell they were impressed that I went the extra mile to ensure good FOH sound.

I bought this one primarily for the 3-input so I could use an LCR configuration if I wanted to (as my mixer has LCR capabilities). Also, it has an app that I can use on an iPad so I can check levels and crossovers anytime. However, the app (which is available for Windows, iOS, and Android) doesn't really offer a lot of features. I expected to be able to do everything from the app without having to touch the VENU360, but that is definitely not the case. But, it is just v1 after all, so I'm thinking future revisions will offer more capabilities.

Oh, and one more thing: even though the manual says you can download more speaker and amplifier tunings directly from the online library within the app, this feature didn't exist at all. The VENU360 only has a handful of speaker and amplifier tunings built-in. But, again, I'm sure a later revision will add this feature.

Overall, it was money WELL spent, and if you're in live sound reinforcement and serious about your band's sound, you must have one of these in your rig. One day, I'll buy a few more to use for the monitors (unless I can convince the band to buy in-ear).
