Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Big Muff Pi Fuzz Pedal with Mid-Shift Reviews

Fuzz Pedal with Footswitchable Mids Section, Noise Gate, and Expression Pedal Input

Fuzz lovers have gravitated toward the Big Muff for over four decades. It's been heard on countless records, and is renowned for its gnarly edge and nearly endless sustain. The electro-harmonix Deluxe Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal re-imagines this classic, packing it full of everything that made the original so awesome while adding new features to take the classic to new heights. Leading the charge of add-ons is a footswitchable Mids section, letting you instantly cut through the mix. Better yet, the Mids section is sweepable via an expression pedal, so you can conjure fuzzy wah-style sounds with ease. The Deluxe Big Muff Pi is an incredibly flexible fuzz!

This thing kicks butt

By Derek Stamps from Poplar Bluff, MO on March 1, 2023

You can really get some mean tones out of this thing. The mid boost feature is awesome; I kick that it on for solos and really heavy riffs and it just gives ya chills. Great pedal

This effect has been so much fun to use. It truly is an awesome sound. I don't think you can get a better fuzz pedal than this.

Great Pedal

By John from Central PA on May 15, 2020 Music Background: Lifelong professional musician.

The Deluxe Big Muff is simply a great pedal. Had one of the originals back in the day but the Deluxe is far more superior to it without question. The options to get the sound you need is there. When you turn down the volume you still have great distortion. You literally have endless sustain if you want it. Can't say enough about it. It is hard to turn off because I enjoy it so much.

Big Muff Fun

By Larry T from Pasadena on November 19, 2019 Music Background: Hobby

Most fun I ever had with a pedal. My first fuzz. I pick the Deluxe, since I can’t decide on which Muff to get. The Deluxe has lots of options so you can dail in lots of different tone. Sweetwater has a great team. Thanks to Clint and Zach for all their help. Wouldn’t want to get my gears anywhere else.

Works perfect on my gig, a must for guitarist.

I bought this pedal because of the good review and it didn't disappoint me. This pedal I paired with my Freqout works fine and I love the noise gate feature on the Big Muff pedal. Unlike the Boss GT 1 when paired with Freqout it gives a noisy output, not a clean sound. Big Muff deluxe nailed every tune you could have for your types of guitar playing from blues, death, metal, 60's, etc.
I bought this pedal at Sweetwater as most merchants are out of stock. I tried driving to nearby Guitar Center which they said they have but when I get there, they don't have it, just wasting my time there and probably they want to bring customer to their door. Musician's Friend has a waiting list at that time, I guess only Sweetwater has supply and readily available for free fast shipping.

Fantastic Fuzz

By Aaron Balentine from Grovetown, GA on January 26, 2019

I've always really enjoyed fuzz tones and have wanted to incorporate it into my own sounds for a few years now. The biggest problem I ran into was that I liked so many, very different tones that I couldn't find a single fuzz to deliver them all, until I gave this thing a try. I've been able to find every kind of sound I wanted, from bright, harsh tones a la early Zeppelin to big and doomy bottom end and anything in between. The mids control allows you to either fine tune to your exact liking or be used as a totally separate tone you can kick in to effectively have two fuzzes on tap, depending upon how extreme you want to set things. Something not mentioned here is that it has 3 internal trim pots that allow you to super fine tune the way the mid control functions, I've not felt the need to fiddle with them, but just an extra touch of control for the fellow tweakers out there. If you need either a lot of different fuzz tones at your fingertips or just the tweakability to find your perfect tone, this is the one, and at a killer price. (I got the demo and it was in pristine condition, I highly recommend considering one!)

Loving the Big Muff Pi Deluxe

By Mike from New York on May 19, 2018 Music Background: Guitarist, vocalist, composer (over 30 years experience)

Gives you the classic Big Muff sound, but adds on a bunch of parameters that allow you to tweek your sound; the ability to use an expression pedal to sweep through the mids allows you to create some really interesting soundscapes. Also want to mention the great customer service from Chris Barry at Sweetwater: he is really on top of things, called to check on my delivery option, really appreciated that.

Performs as advertised

By Doug from Wasilla on March 5, 2018 Music Background: have played for 40 years

I bought this pedal to help me get the Big Muff David Gilmour tones. This pedal has all of the different Big Muff tones that he has used thru out his career. I compared the tones of this pedal to the tones of the Originals that I own and suffice it to say, they are all in there! EHX did a good job on this pedal!

Deluxe Big Muff Pi Fuzz

This pedal has taken front row on my pedal board. The distortion is smoother than butter, with a wide tonal palette. Very awesome EH. Thanks Sweetwater.

Best Muff to date

By Lui Sutil from San Diego, Ca on September 23, 2015 Music Background: Multi instrumentalist founder of Subtle System

I have 5 fuzzes at the beggining of my chain... Wampler velvet fuzz for solos, fat fuzz factory for power chords and whacky stuff and I used to use the Swollen Pickle when I wanted that very violent and eternal sustain sound with amazong low end... But after gettig the deluxe big muff, I might retire the pickle... Don't get me wrong , it's still one of my fave pedals... And the low end on that sucker is just too much (in a good way) sounds like you are tuned lower... But I must say the muff feels a lot creamier and the sustain with the gate all the way off is pretty impressive... No, people haven't mentioned this, but if you buy an expression pedal is just a monster!!! A MONSTER that growls! I bought a pro line exp pedal for 30 bucks and wow... It is so much fun to play this thing.... Sometimes I use a wha pedal after my od's or fuzzes for that growl ... But this sounds a lot more synthy, very awesome unique sound... If people here love the deluxe BMP without even trying it woth the expression pedal.... Oh baby... You just wait!!!

DELUXE BIG MUFF PI FUZZ

By Chito Refuerzo from The Evergreen State on February 26, 2015 Music Background: Hobbyist

All the Big Muff models' tones can be tweaked on this one including the much-sought-after Ram's Head. The Mid-Shift is a big PLUS! It has a very smooth and warm sound. Kudos to Mike Matthews and the EHX team!

More than I expected

By Dallas Burke from Southwest Georgia on August 10, 2014 Music Background: Educator, Musician, Pedal Addict

Don't hate me, BMP fans, but I'm not a fuzz fan. I do appreciate the sound, and I wanted a fuzz that was versatile for those times that the music calls for that type of tone. That said, the features on this joker are incredible! Versatility is an understatement! I've found a number of useful tones, even for a non-muff fan.

However, what really blew me away was when I combined it with a Soul Food (before the DBMP), WOW!!! The Soul Food really fills in those upper frequencies and makes it just a MONSTER!!! A full frequency tone machine that will "rip your head off!" It's turned me into one of "those guys" who use too many quotations, CAPITAL LETTERS and exclamation points!!!!!

EHX did it again

By Ken Owens from Ca. USA on June 26, 2014 Music Background: Hobbyist / X-pro

This pedal is what they say it is. After tweaking for a week to get the exact setting I wanted, it was bliss. The frequency knob (mid-shift) is why I bought the DELUXE BIG MUFF PI in the first place, adjusting it will give that half-cocked wah sound, great for a lead tone. It has a nice way of gain stacking with an overdrive pedal. Great bye. You can get hundreds of different tones from this pedal.

I like it

By Charles from Louisiana on August 7, 2020 Music Background: Almost 40 years

I had the old Big Muff back in the 80's and sound is close, but just seems the old Big Muff had more clarity to through the mid range! Maybe it's because I'm older and maybe the equipment I used back then was different! But I like the diversity it gives on using a expression pedal almost like a wah pedal!

Versatile go-to distortion machine

By Eric Fisher from West Lafayette, Indiana on January 9, 2018

I bought a Deluxe Big Muff Pi in 1981 and it remained my go-to distortion device for several
years. The new one has the same great expressive fuzz ton and sustain, but with significantly better control and diversity.

The attack really helps with clarifying picking during solos, but don't overclock it or you lose. the effect somewhat. Likewise, the noise gate - which works so well my bass player (who bought me this) got the bass version for himself and line noise is a distant past thing now. Like all Big Muffs, this unit doesn't play well with others such as analog effects like phase or flangers, unless you want a full-on Grand Funk or out-of-control Hendrix sound.

My only gripe is with the mid-shift, which allows you great additional tonal options but has no real level control (that I've found, the 'level' know changes the sound, not the volume), so the volume goes through the roof. Otherwise, a very good unit and I hope to harness it more with an expression pedal as a secondary wah wah sound. If used prudently, the new Deluxe is great for replicating the old late 60's early 70's classic hard rock sounds.

Dynamic Fuzz Box

By Brandon Skarsten from Missoula, MT on July 28, 2015

I'm not a big fuzz guy. In order to cover some of the new stuff I have been playing, I needed a fuzz. Took a chance and bought based on online opinion and youtube videos. Very dynamic. Infinitely adjustable and covers a wide range of fuzz tones. Mid boost and bass boost seal the deal for me. The gate works well, but I do not use it. Part of the charm of a fuzz pedal is wrestling the feedback. Great pedal.

Muffy

By Sweetwater Customer on May 26, 2015

Yep, it's got a broad range of sound you can play with and really dial something nice in. The bass boost, tone, and sustain alone provide a great deal of adjustment. It sits next to my mad professor and provides a more easily controlled level of fuzz/distortion. I do really enjoy both. It was a great addition.
