A lot of kit for the money

By Mike
Music Background: Played drums since I was 7 years old... and I'm really old now LOL.

I bought this kit because I was on a budget and it was primarily something to play for fun and to teach my grandkids how to play. This is my first e-kit... always had acoustic kits in the past. I had first thought about a Roland... but I wanted a "real" hi-hat and I needed a 2 crashes plus a ride with a trigger for the bell. Roland didn't have a kit at a price point with that. Now, I will say this... you will need to spend some time with the module to dial everything in. It's not exactly plug and play. I noticed the hats were quiet in the mix... so I had to fix that. The only other thing I noticed is that the snare pad has a hard time picking up lighter ghost notes. I still need to tweak that. But for the money it's the best kit I could find at this price point. The rack seems solid and other than sometimes tightening up the snare position once in a while, everything stays where it should.

Excellent Drum Kit!

By Sweetwater Customer

The DTX6K2-X is an excellent kit. The rubber toms can be upgraded at later time. The sound module allows for changes to be made. The sound module is excellent and has excellent sounds. We are using a Simmons drum amplifier with the set. It sound great. Head phones can be plugged into the amp or directly into the module.

We recommend this set.

The Sweetwater customer service is terrific. Kyle did great with follow up and follow through.

Great for a beginner

By Ray from Florida
Music Background: professional

I have positive and negative feelings about this kit FOR THE PRICE.

On the negative side, for the price I think this kit should be sold with all MUCH LARGER mesh or silicone pads. This is a very expensive kit to be sold with three 7" old tech single zone rubber pads and one very small (8") 3 zone silicone pad. (The silicone pad is great but it's very small for a snare pad)

On the positive side I think Yamaha's 3 zone cymbals are superior to other brands (including Roland) and most importantly I think the module's sounds are vastly superior to the competition in this price range. (Yes including Roland modules) It doesn't give you the vast amount of sound sculpting options a lot of brands modules gives you, but the sounds it gives are awesome without "sculpting" them much! You don't need to be a module sound sculpting guru to make the kit sound great.

So I guess IMO, if you want bigger better pads (mesh) in a sub $ kit, buy a different brand.
But If you want a superior sounding module and superior 3 zone cymbals, (plus a great kick tower, included HH stand and nice rack) buy this kit and maybe upgrade the pads down the road. (I upgraded my pads with larger 3 zone Yamaha Silicone pads from my other Yamaha kit and love the kit that way)

Studio kit

By Trent from WA
Music Background: Producer

Purchased this kit in order to have good dynamics at a price that didn't break the bank and I'm not disappointed. Some of my favorite features include being able to choke the cymbals like a real one, three zone cymbals and really responsive. I have a double bass on the kick pad with plenty of room and the cymbals have pins so that they don't move back and forth. Overall I would recommend this kit over similar Roland ones I've had.

Awesome Sound

By Rob from Georgia
Music Background: 45 years Rock drummer

There is quite a bit of initial setup to be done to get the performance that is shockingly real. A powered PA speaker as a monitor and you are set. Extremely versatile sounds.

Excellent value for the Money

By Bigguy from Ontario Canada
Music Background: Lifetime drumset and percussion gigger and hobbist

Score of 3.5 is excellent in my scale - out of the box it played well and needed very little tweeting. I really don't know why people haven't moved to the silicon pad. I have been using them for 9 years and I would NEVER go back to mesh heads. I think the screen on the DTX pro is too small and the layout is wide and shallow. I had a TD8 that was way ahead of yamaha for simple and easy. If you have never had more you would never know what you are missing but in module design we are going backwards. All the companies are designing for price point instead of building a better module.

Overall this is an excellent buy - you get a lot of value and features for the money.....

P.s. My silicone pad is acting up after about 18 months of use.

Not a good kit for the price

By Brett G. from Watertown, CT
Music Background: Just a guy who whacks things at the right time

This kit gets a few things right. The sounds are excellent and superior to Roland. However the design is tremendously flawed. The cymbals are designed to move freely which on the surface is a good idea for a more realistic feel. The cymbals are also designed to only register on one side of the cymbal. I cannot get through a song on this kit without spinning the cymbals back to the yamaha logo every 30 seconds rendering this kit borderline useless. If this design flaw did not exist I would highly recommend this kit. But with that flaw I have to recommend avoiding this kit. Now I am not sure if on most kits the cymbals can be tightened enough to not spin by themselves. But with mine any angle and any amount of tightening simply does not help. No reviews mention this flaw so purchase this kit with caution. Perhaps go with a Roland and use additional sounds from VSTs. Good luck and keep playing.
