An Open Back Performance With A Thick Closed Back Sound!
Beyerdynamic headphones are fantastic in quality, sound & comfort; I already own a pair of DT 770 80 ohms I purchased 15 years ago, and they are still my go-to cans...I picked up these Beyer 990s and was extremely happy with their performance here in 2023!
Growing on me; love them
Never owned an open back pair of headphones before and I'm amazed at what these can do that my closed backs can't.
First thing I did was plug them into my iPhone (only because it was handy and I was curious). They sounded terrible! Crazy bright and unlistenable.
Second, I plugged them into my Pioneer SX-980 receiver and again they sounded bright and unlistenable. I had watched YouTube reviews and all of them concluded that these headphones are really bright. All of the reviews were gamers and podcasters for some reason. Not sure why there were no musician reviews. I was getting discouraged and ready to box them back up.
Lastly, I plugged into my apollo x4 and, wait, what? These sound good. All that shrill brightness turned into sweet clarity. It took a little bit of getting used to but these headphones are awesome.
1. Using these for tracking vocals has helped me and insane amount. I've been able to lay down my best vocal takes ever. Being able to hear not only the music in the headphone but my voice outside the headphone (no low end build up) has made my pitch, diction, and dynamics WAY better. I highly recommend tracking vocals with these. (no problems whatsoever with bleed, just don't use a click)
2. These are crazy comfortable. I wear them for hours without any discomfort.
3. As an acoustic guitar player I like to practice into mics with headphones and reverb and since these are open back I don't feel like my head is in a box so much when I practice for 4-5 hours. Also, the low end doesn't rumble inside my head which gets really uncomfortable in my closed backs. (I have the DT 770 Pro)
4. The carrying bag is a nice addition. I like that is a cushioned zip up bag rather than just a pleather sack with a draw string.
I tried using SoundID on these and it made them sound worse rather than better. It took away all that beautiful clarity.
If you want open backs these are definitely worth it. I'm super happy. If I had $ to spend on headphones I think I would have gone for the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro Open-Back. I wish I had a way to test them out to see if the grass is greener but I would assume they are better since they at least look cooler :) For now I'll be enjoying the 990s.

The answer is yes.
For this price, I have had more expensive headphones that don't compare. Has a nice stereo field/image. I did have to eq the 6k+ down about 1.9db but once I did that I was amazed to hear things I have not in a while. Strings? OMG! brings them to life. I am used to Senheizers and I must say... I am very happy with this purchase... you wont be disappointed.
Very nice Subs but not overdone... even good separation with Bass frequencies and mids... looking forward to evaluating mix's with these...
Excellent Headphones
I purchased these to replace a 40 year old set of Radio Shack headphones, which were quite good by the way (probably made by Koss). These are way better. I use them primarily to plug into my keyboard mixer to practice without running through my amps and bugging the neighbors with the repetition of practice. They have excellent sound reproduction, are comfortable to wear for hours and I'm quite pleased with them.
Amazing
Comfortable, lightweight, incredible sound. I have them connected to a M-Audio 192-4 interface volume at 9 and in my pc is at 80% and they're sounding pretty good and loud. No distortion or harsh. I primarily use them for gaming and some light mixing for my YouTube channel.

Excellent headphones for the price point
Bought these to use with podcasting and they perform perfectly! Only deducted a little because I'd prefer that the audio cord would unplug from the headphone side for portability and would prefer a hard case instead of a soft case for better protection when we go mobile. These are excellent and comfortable headphones and fulfill our audio monitoring needs!
DT 990s but on steroids!!!
these headphones are absolutely amazing and are worth the extra over the regular 990s. they are built like a tank and are extremely light and comfortable along with looking sleek and sexy. the sound is absolutely outstanding! I went from my dt 770 80ohms to these and the difference is night and day. the sound stage is incredible even for them being open back. the highs are sparkly and clear, the mids are pronounced and forward, and last of all the bass is detailed and somewhat punchy considering the open back design. sub bass is more than present and quite detailed but nowhere near over the top. overall these are a great listening experience and I would even go as to say they'd be great for mixing or imaging especially with the soundstage. overall amazing buy!
