Goldilocks amp

By Kevin from North Carolina on May 30, 2023 Music Background: Hobbyist

The only knock on this amp to me is that there's a gap in the distortion amount between where the classic channel ends and the ultra channel begins. It's exactly where an overdrive pedal would fit in though. Other than that's it's perfect. Sounds awesome, not flubby or brittle. It cranks satisfyingly at a polite volume. It's versatile and well built. This one's a keeper for sure over three or four other amps I've had comparable to this.
My final amp lineup-
Fender Deluxe Reverb
Vox AC15
Marshall DSL5
Roland JC22
Maybe a modeler in the future someday!

Exactly as advertised

By Nathan Lane on April 21, 2023

I am loving this amp! It's sturdy and well constructed but more importantly, it delivers the tone. After researching low wattage tube amps for apartment friendly options, I decided to go with this one. The 5 watt setting is great for jamming and the 0.5 watt is ideal for the apartment. Both channels sound fantastic and it is great with pedals.

Best Tone Ever

By Walrus JOOB from Ohio on March 29, 2023

I've had this amp for a bit over a year, and I love the sound of it just plugging straight into it and cranking it to about 6. It's the tone I've always chased. I could never get any of my old Marshalls to sound this good, because I was almost never able to crank them. Marshalls unfortunately have only one volume setting that they really work at, and this is the only one I've had that lets me set it there and keep it there. My biggest gripe is that I just can't get this kind of sound and feel with a band, it's not loud enough (and the big Marshalls are all too loud).

The Cadillac of Mini-amps

By JR from LAS VEGAS, NV on December 14, 2022

The DSL5CR is a pricey, but great sounding tube practice amp. Mine was a demo but looks brand new. The "Classic Gain" channel is very clean and the "Ultra Gain" channel is very crunchy, so there are tones available for any style. The two-color channel LEDs and aux input jack are great modern features.

The low power setting is perfect for bedroom practice or jamming with acoustic guitars. The full 5 watts is loud enough to rehearse with a mellow drummer (set the amp on a table) and it would be easy enough to mic it or run the emulated output into the PA to use it in any venue. My only complaint is that, for stage and studio applications, it would be better if the emulated output jack were a low impedance XLR instead of the miniplug.

If you are a tube purist with plenty of cash, then you won't be disappointed with this versatile little beauty. For the budget minded, Marshall's solid-state MG30FX also sounds great and has even more features for a fraction of the price.

Great Amp for Low Volume Play

By Jacob Rea from DURHAM, NC on December 13, 2022

Perfect size and sound quality out of this amp for low volume settings. Comes with the switch pedal to quickly switch channels and turn off and on the effects loop, and the low power switch in the back takes the amp down to low volumes with great quality sound. I've got a one year old, so I've got to keep the volume down, but also wanted that tube amp warmth and feel while playing when the little one sleeps.

great home amp

Do not compromise and do not hesitate

By Sweetwater Customer on May 25, 2022

I can't say enough good things about this amplifier. Previously I had a Blackstar HT-5 that had a clean channel that was all clean and a high gain channel that was all full-on distortion. While great for metal, it did not produce the range of warm overdrive that I wanted. This Marshall has it all. Very warm overdrive (with gain turned up on the clean channel or turned down on the high gain channel). Frankly, it's a beautiful sound. I've had several amps in my playing career, and when I got this one and turned it on, I just kept strumming my guitar and was mesmerized by finally getting "the sound" I had always wanted (but could never afford). If you are looking for a "Marshall" sound, this amp has it in spades and is not some small, cheap imitator. And don't be fooled by the "5 watts" - this thing is loud enough to rock out a very large area. The reverb is very serviceable as are the EQs and the effects loop works great. If you are hesitating - don't.

The amp I’ve wanted for decades.

By Jason Method from Orland, CA on April 3, 2022

This amp isn't perfect, that needs to be made clear. The gain levels between the "Classic Gain" and "Ultra Gain" channel's is ridiculously different in as much as the Classic has almost no gain at all even turned all the way up and the Ultra Gain takes a bit of tweaking to get the gain low enough, though it smooths out considerably when the speaker breaks in.
However, the Classic Gain channel takes pedals extremely well and goes from clean to scream with a wide variety of dirt boxes, and the Ultra Gain, as stated before, smooths put considerably when the speaker is broken in. It gets all the Marshall sounds I could ever want to get, and the digital reverb is very usable at all levels.
Perhaps the best quality is with the power scaling, you can go from midnight in the apartment volume to hanging with a loud drummer at practice, particularly if you plug it into a larger cab.
All in all, I'm very pleased with this amp, it gets most of the play time since I got it some 9 months or so ago.

Exactly what I was looking for

By Sweetwater Customer on March 11, 2022

I have been using a Transistor Practice amp for years and was looking for that warmer tube sound. This is perfect for in my house. The lower wattage allows me to get the breaking up sound at a low enough volume that I am not upsetting the neighbors.

Just Awesome

Great Marshall tone at low volume! Takes pedals great. My absolute favorite practice amp.

Marshall DSL5CR AMP (Excellent practice amp..)

By Bob from Clarksville, Tn on August 19, 2021 Music Background: Casual guitar player

I recently purchased the Marshall DSL5CR Amp as a replacement for my old Fender Champion 30 Amp that I have had for years. I am just a casual player and only play at home for enjoyment. I did not realize how much difference and better sound my new amp has vs the old Fender. Absolutely love the sound of the Marshall. I would recommend this amp to anyone who needs a practice amp for home use. Well worth the cost.

The tone I’ve been chasing

By Glen from Ohio on May 31, 2021

I recently bought a solid state version of a famous amp which promises to sound exactly like its tube counterpart. It's certainly light weight but I just can't coax the tone out of it that I want. I have a few amps and wanted something for bedroom practice with great tone, and that wasn't too big. Specifically, it had to be something that sounded good with a Les Paul as well as some others. I always shied away from Marshall because I play mostly clean or blues, but after reading other reviews I decided to take my chances. This is the one - not too big, easily play at bedroom volumes (although it can get quite loud), and can get that tone I was after. I can now see why SRV had a Marshall for clean sounds along with his Fender because the clean sound is beautiful. And of course, it's a Marshall so you can dial in distortion very easily. To be honest, I haven't run any pedals through it yet so I can't speak to that (If you have the tone you want you don't need a pedal). Whether it's the Les Paul, Strat, Tele, or Ibanez AZ, they all sound amazing through this 5 watt Marshall tonal beast. Like many people, I probably spend too much on gear and, at times, buy something and have a tinge of buyer's remorse - this purchase ain't one of them. It's exactly what I wanted! Every note rings out, chords sound amazing, and with the turn of a knob or push of a button you can get some down and dirty sounds that could rattle your teeth. Obviously, it's not for playing a large venue but for bedroom practice or a smaller venue it is perfect.
In addition, I would be remiss to not mention Sweetwater's, as always, excellent service. I placed the order and had it in a day and a half. It was boxed securely and in perfect condition. My main man Stephen Oppenheim always contacts me to make sure it's exactly what I was expecting and that everything is working perfectly. Heck, this last year I've spoken to him so many times I might have to begin inviting him to family get togethers. Thanks Stephen.

Marvellous Amp

By Philip Rodden on April 9, 2021

What a glorious amp this is. I've played Orange, Supro, Bugera, Fender, Blackstar and this is my first Marshall.

I love this amp more than any of the others I've owned. It's just got so much depth and fullness to the sound, cleans are great, the gain channel is so good I'll barely need to use my pedals to get just about any drive sounds I want.

Loud, great sound, and just beautiful to play through.

Maybe the last house amp you'll buy

By Robert Kibler from OH on March 25, 2021

This amp totally rocks the bedroom or basement and highly recommend the dsl5cr for an all around the house amp. This is my 2nd Marshall but my 1st tube amp. I Bought the demo version, saved some paper and haven't looked back since. Running a handful of pedals in front and everyone plays very nice together. Will maybe replace the speaker at some point but very satisfied with the stock for now. Never played humbuckers through her but I'd imagine that is heaven as well. A strat, ocd and/or fuzzface, deja vibe and wah and I pretend I'm Jimi all night long...thank you for that Sweetwater.

Great Marshall Sound!

By Rob from Fredericksburg, VA on March 9, 2021

This amp definitely captures the Marshall sound. Fantastic amp. Even with its 10" speaker, it sounds wonderful.

I was looking to get a Marshall sound in a bedroom amp, and this fit the bill nicely. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for the same.

Excellent Marshall sound - nice size for home jamming

By Brett mort from Augusta michigan on February 27, 2021 Music Background: Amateur

I called Taylor Perry at Sweetwater music at 11:00 on a Friday and ordered this. It showed up at my house at 2:00 on Saturday. How does Sweetwater do it.? Amazon isn't even that quick. The amp is great. It has that great Marshall sound that I was looking for, and you get the great sound at a volume that doesn't rattle the house. It sounds great through headphones too! I don't even have that good of headphones and it sounds great. Would definitely buy this amp again. A good friend bought one at the same time and he loves his as well. Thank you Taylor Perry at Sweetwater for making this happen so quickly.

Awesome Tone at lower volume levels

By Jason Genet from Clifton Spring on July 13, 2020 Music Background: Rock and Ska bands since 1996

I love this amp, it is perfect for home use. I get awesome tone at lower volume levels. This amp can get loud if you need it to. I use the 1 watt setting and it is perfect for a home or apartment with sleeping kids or close neighbors.

Skeptical buyer

By Aj from Hanover pa on December 7, 2019 Music Background: I’ve noodled on and off for 20 years.

I won’t talk specs. Everyone here already has searched it out. However the amp and tone can be amazing with both channels. Especially if you have a nice guitar. I play 2 Gibson’s and a fender through mine.cant beat it. Marshall. This thing can handle any genre It’s 1 watt mode is still loud as it can be Don’t let the YouTube videos determine your decision. I give the amp 4.8 of 5. And that reason is they should have put a 12 in it. But the speaker it comes with had plenty of punch.

Marshall DSL5Cr

They amp is everything I wanted. Sounds great. I love that I can put it to 1 watt and still sounds fantastic. Vocab at Sweetwater was once again great to work with

Great amp but don’t use the low output switch

By Mike CT from Connecticut on March 31, 2019

You can read all of the positives about this amp in other reviews and I agree with them.

I would just add that the amp sounds so much better in the full 5 watt mode and using a JHS Little Black Amp... through the FX loop as a master volume to control what ultimately hits the speaker. The sounds are much more dynamic and not slightly darker and more compressed like when the low watt mode is used. This would apply to all of the marhsall"s With lower watt options.

The first guitar amp I've really loved

By Willis Blackburn from Jersey City, NJ on August 11, 2018

I've been playing guitar for over 30 years and have owned lots of guitar amps, but I always found the amp to be a necessary evil. I had a 35-watt tube amp for a long time, but it was so, so loud. I live in an apartment and couldn't turn it past 1. I had a couple of modeling amps too, and they had a lot of good sounds, but they also had a lot of poor sounds, and I was constantly fiddling with them.

So I've been frustrated with amps for a long time, but I love my Marshall DSL5CR. It is heavy enough that it doesn't rattle or feel junky, but it's light enough that I can pick it up and carry it to where I am, rather than having to go to where it is in order to use it. And it sounds great all the time no matter how I set it.

Unlike the previous-generation DSL5C, this new one has reverb (thus the R), which is great if you don't feel like dealing with pedals and improves its portability, and it also has separate gain and master volume for the clean channel, making that channel genuinely useful. The high-gain channel goes from crunchy to metal. It's quite loud at 5 watts but you can switch it to 0.5 watts, which will let you turn the volume up to 5 or more without bothering other people in your household or building.

Assuming you're generally in the Marshall demographic (i.e., you play rock) and want an amp for home use or light gigging, just buy this amp, you'll love it.

Great job Marshall!!

By EM on July 9, 2018 Music Background: Hobbyist/Performer

I have been using this amp for a couple of months now and am finally ready to post a review. Wasn't sure what to expect, my only other Marshall was a British-made JCM2000 DSL100. In short, I love this amp. The cleans are excellent and the Ultra Gain channel is a blast to play through. The shared eq isn't an issue in my opinion, Marshall did a great job voicing the eq so it works well for both channels. Yes the reverb is weaker than a Fender, but I don't use much anyway and the market is flooded with reverb pedals if you need more. Speaking of pedals, this amp loves them. I can run my pedalboard through the front with no problems. The Classic Gain channel is surprisingly clean, with more headroom than I expected. The amp is loud at 5 watts, but don't expect to gig with it (without a PA). Low power mode works great for late night practicing, and .5 watts is louder than I expected it to be!

My amp has been used daily for 2 months and has been perfect thus far, no issues. Build seems solid enough, no rattles or other issues. Cosmetics are nicely done, and the amp looks like a classic Marshall. The stock speaker is actually decent (I have used worse), but I replaced it with a Celestion G10 Vintage (basically a 10" Vintage 30). The G10 Vintage really adds some personality to this amp. I like this amp so much I went and bought a DSL40CR, and that amp has been flawless so far. Great job Marshall!!

outstanding amp

By Kevin Kratsch from oshkosh, WI on March 31, 2018

the first thing i changed were the 12AX7's to 12AT7's. while clean with the stock AX7s this change really cleaned it up nicely. Over the next few weeks i am experimenting with moving a 12AY7 around the 3 sockets and gauging the effects.

For the power tube Marshall uses a 12BH7A but strangely lists it as a ECC99. Do NOT use an ECC99 it is a Bias mismatch and will burn out the power circuit board (runs too hot). I had a Superior 12BH7A tube from the 50's and put it in. Power tube construction is huge and the best were from the early 20th century. However the Marshall stock power tube is good.

Ive had several single tube amps and a huge selling point for me was the 3 preamp tubes this has. its a feature generally reserved for amps over $1,000. the more preamp tubes, the easier it is to achieve a clean sound.]

Next I replaced the Celestion 10-30 speaker with a Voice of Rock. Celestions are ok but tend to be muddy. VOR's are the best speakers (IMO) for amps to increase high end. Made in MN.

The equalizer is great, the headphone plug was a selling point for me and both single coil and humbuckers sound perfect through it. I did my homework on this amp and I could not find anything under a grand comparable. This is by far the best tube amp for the money.

Thanks to sweetwater/jonathan casarow with their usual great service and ultra fast shipping.

The ONE

By Bill from Lawrenceville Georgia on March 7, 2018 Music Background: 40 years of guitar

A huge range of Marshall tone in a small package.
I have a DSL40C. Great amp, but I don't gig with it, it's just too much. Trying to get a good high gain is impossible unless you crank up the volume. Can't do that in my basement so for a while I have been looking for an alternative.
This is it. The DSL5CR has everything I need.Great tone. Good headroom. Great breakup.Plenty of power (more with a 4x12 cab). Good 10" speaker. Built in reverb. Effects loop. Line out. Very portable. Takes pedals well.
The biggest plus other than the fantastic Marshall tone is the FX loop (on a 5 watt amp!).
The only negative so far, a weak reverb. But, it has an FX loop.
I hate to admit it but I bought three cheaper amps to try to get this. I spent more than $500 on that experiment. When you want Marshall tone, only the real deal will do.

My first tube amp - loving it

By Mike from CT on February 17, 2018

Take this with a grain of salt because i"ve never owned a tube amp outside of a Vox hybrid model amp, but i"m loving this amp. I held off on buying this because I wanted reverb and the prior model didn"t have it. This one does and now separate volumes for each channel. It"s just incredible after spending a few minutes to get the feel of the settings and then playing the opening to Highway to Hell. Even on the low power mode with my guitar volume all the way up, 1/2 volume on the amp was getting too loud for the basement with people sleeping upstairs. So glad that I got this one!

Marshall DSL5C

By Tony Raines from Richland Ms on February 12, 2018

First of all let me say that customer service is better than any you"ll ever find it a retail store. Chris Jenkins is the man. I already own the DSL40 but at half volume it"s still to loud for home practice. So I knew the sound I was looking for. I needed that sound at bedroom and recording volume. This DSL5CR is the answer to that. It"s amazing how loud 5 tube watts is. When you first pick it up you know you got something built great. Then when you turn it on OMG it sounds amazing. Two channels with reverb and direct out for recording this is the amp I"ve been looking for.. Yes… worth every penny of it. Buy it,you will not be disappointed!!!!!!

Great Sound at a Great Price!

By Tyler on February 5, 2018

This is probably one of the best sounding amps I"ve had the pleasure of playing, it sounds fantastic at low volumes. Do yourself a favor and check it out! You can"t beat it for the price with all valves and studio grade spring reverb!

Fantastic practice and recording amp

By Mark Miranda from Indianapolis on April 16, 2022 Music Background: Hobbyist, played in bands for years

After years of modeling amps I wanted to get back to real tube tone and how fantastic it makes even mediocre guitars sound. I've always wanted to own a Marshall amp, and this 5 watt rocker is checking about every box. I was able to dial in a great classic rock tone with my Telecaster. My PRS sounds amazing on the clean ("classic gain") channel. I haven't tried out the FX loop yet, but am glad it's there in case I want to start playing with stomp boxes. The reverb is the weak spot here, and I would have to mic it in a live setting especially because a bass and drums would drown this amp.
Early impressions, I am overall pleased and looking forward to getting the speaker broken in.
Practice sessions have been great - I am totally smitten with that Marshall sound and am ecstatic to record with it eventually.
I think this will be a keeper!

The answer to the "turn it down!!!" problem

By Ebil Wiebelwabel from Ohio on March 27, 2022 Music Background: Professional musician and instructor

I've had to deal with volume complaints at gigs for time-out-of-mind with all the tube amps I've owned over the years (50 to 100 watters). Using this with a mike and my little Behringer powered monitor, I am able to get the cranked Marshall sound, with real tubes, but finally at a controllable volume that won't irritate the bar and the soundguy. This amp isn't loud enough on its own to keep up with a band, but with a mike and a portable Behringer powered speaker you should be good to go for any gig. And if you actually have an attentive sound engineer, you could probably dispense with the monitor. As a practice amp, this amp is probably the best I've ever had. It's the best "plug and play" amp I've ever owned. No pedals needed to get a great sound. My only gripe about the amp and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the effects loop is pretty much useless for those of us with pedal effects. The loop seems to be designed for line-level, so your more-common instrument level stompboxes will actually degrade your tone if used in the loop. People say this amp is pedal-friendly, but I disagree. For pedals in front of the amp it's fine, but for pedals in the loop, forget it. Having said that, I seldom use effects loops due to the extra cabling involved and setup time, so a less-than-ideal effects loop isn't a huge thing for me, especially on an amp this size.

Close to perfection

By Dominik Domanski on November 6, 2021

I got my first tube amp for home use and I was so happy with it that I wanted to recomend it. (I play it with my Epi Dot with Pearly Gates set, and Squier Mustang. No pedals)

First of all the clean channel is fenomenal, very warm with fat bass, clear and open midrange even with humbuckers and the treble is soft. Though the clean channel is called „classic gain" it doesn't break up, the gain knob only makes it warmer, more punchy and compressed.

The digital reverb sounds great, very useable, but not an ambient type, more in a spring range but with just different feel. When I compared the reverbs with the spring one on my 2005 marshall mg15cdr I honestly prefered the digital one. But if you like the ambient stuff then there's always the efects loop.

The ultra gain channel does exactly what it says, it's either full on saturated goodness or nothing at all. Around 7 it starts to produce that sweet saturation we all love: aggesive, extrordinary for palm mutes, it's like having a roaring JCM 800 in your room, but bellow 7 it chokes, it's undefined and to aggresive for blues, it wants you to crank it.

But as I've said, it's only close to perfection, because it doesn't do breakup, like at all, even when you crank up the master it's just more punchy. Sometimes the bass is overwhelming and to loose, the foot switch has a fx loop on/off and nothing for reverb which is absurd and the emulated output is bad (andertones have it in their video)

But even considering all those imperfections I know it is still worth it, cause there is simple solution to it: pedals. I'm sure that with a low drive pedal like bluesbreaker or boss od-3 it will fill be the best home amp ever.

Great studio amp

By Chris P from New York, NY on July 4, 2021 Music Background: Session/gigging

Really just a great amp all around. It's nice to have an amp sound this good without blowing your ear drums out. It has a good range of tones, Marshalls have a tendency to sound muddy and bottom heavy but this amp really has plenty of clarity and high end. The high gain channel sounds great, an overdrive pedal really isn't necessary other than a boost. The clean channel takes pedals great but there is definitely a serious dip in volume between the clean and overdrive channels.

I've seen a few people knocking the reverb in reviews and I really like it, it's more on the subtle side but I just like a touch and I leave it on. One thing that's a little weird - the foot switch changes channels and toggles the fx loop. I don't think I've ever needed a kill switch for my fix loop but I sure would like the option to turn off the reverb.

When I first took the amp out and was trying it out I was getting sudden drop outs of my signal, I just pushed all the tubes up as snug as they would go and that seems to have fixed the problem; I blame fedex for that one.

Little hiccups aside this is rapidly becoming my favorite amp. it's perfect for using at home or studio and for small coffee shop type gigs but I would definitely upgrade to higher wattage if you play bigger venues. I would definitely recommend this amp.

Marshall DSL5CR

By Gary from Rockford, Illinois on September 19, 2019

This is a great smaller all tube combo. It also comes with a footswitch to switch between channels and to turn on / turn off the effects loop and the onboard reverb really sounds good. I also really like the input to plug my ipod into to jam along with my tunes. This is my home use amp and it has great clean and overdrive tones and it gets pretty loud for a 5 watt unit. This is my 2nd DSL I have purchased from Sweetwater, my other one is a DSL15C which I gig with and they are both awesome amps. I would strongly recommend these DSL amps to anyone needing an all tube combo at an affordable price. I use a Gibson and Epiphone Les Paul with these amps and this makes for a rocking rig. Rock out...…...

By Toady from Florida on February 12, 2019

Love the sound. Having 2 channels makes for easy switching and great that the foot switch is included! I am not sure about having to unplug the speaker to have silent practice but I am sure there are good reasons for it. The aux input volume seems a bit low even when adjusted almost to max on the device but it is workable. I guess I like a little more headroom for the aux input. All in all, definitely a keeper and super fun to play!

great tube amp for the price

By Jorge Mora on June 20, 2018 Music Background: guitarist and amateur musician

Great amp, for this price I don't see any better, for people who claim about the clean channel..remember..is a Marshall, so guess what? is gonna to sound like a Marshall, not like a fender or Roland, my only complain would be the emulated output (until now I don't figure out how to make it work) and the reverb option, you need to set over the half point to full to hear some reverb sound.

Good practice amp

By Music Mike on December 13, 2022

Bought this just for straight practice at home as I leave my DSL20 at rehearsal with the bulk of my pedals. I used to play the DSL20 at home in 10W half power but got tired hauling the amp and pedals back and forth from home to rehearsal. So what to do? Buy another Marshall! But rather than buy another DSL20, I wanted to try the DSL5. I had had jitters it would sound very unMarshall like the discontinued DSL15 as it does not have EL34s in it but I was surprised, The newer DSL5 has an added gain knob in the clean channel and reverb. Just enough features! So now I bring home an overdrive and wah from my pedalboard with adaptors for power and practice at home.
The only negatives is the mediocre reverb as its nowhere near as good as my reverb pedal on my pedal board. Also the stock speaker is flimsy, doesn't produce enough bass, sounds a little fizzy on the dirty channel and is trebly. So I upgrade to a Greenback and all is good.believe it or not I put a 12" in rather than the 10".It fits, well barely. My DSL20 also had the same 12" version Celestion which I upgraded to a Vintage 30.
I prefer simplicity and relative tone to my main amp. I tried some of the dedicated practice amps that have all the modelling and Bluetooth like Boss Katana Mini, Yamaha THRs, Positive Grid Spark and Line 6 Spiders but I just don't need all that for practice. I found they all sounded thin, artificial and brittle. Long live tube amps! At least the small combos.

After not playing for quite some time and selling my 50 amp Rectoverb , One of my biggest life mistakes lol. I bought a little peavy vip practice amp and it just didn't do it for me. So I started looking at low watt tube amps and realized I was never going to get anything Mesa quality at the price I wanted to spend but wanted that tube sound only to play at home levels. I was really torn between the prior model and the black star ht5 and almost bought the black star because of the separate volume and gains on each channel but when I saw the new model of this I jumped right on it. Almost got the 20 but decided to stick with the 5 since I don not plan on playing out. This amp has great cleans and the ultra channel can go to a nice crunch to insane amounts of gain really quick. As others have said on the low power mode this gets plenty loud and can probably keep up with a drummer at the 5 watt mode as long as he is not running some insane double base set up but I would probably say to get the 40 watt model if your going to gig. The sound of the little guy though is great it is lacking a little low end which is expected for a 10 inch speaker I am considering throwing a green back into it in the near future but going to see how this breaks in first. Overall this amp is great for practice and light jamming.. It has great tone for the price when you compare it to whats in its price ranger , Sweet waters customer service is a 10 star if I could rate that separately, Ken Davis is the man thanks for the hook up. I cant wait to throw my next purchase of a mesa boogie flux drive in front of this bad boy.

Great sound when it works

By Luca on August 11, 2018

Let me get this straight, the amplifier is powerful with great dynamic and sustain . It would be perfect if

1) the first unit I got was very noisy that need to be replaced
2) the second unit after 1h of use start to make funny noises , like whistles and hissing and other high pitch noises.

I understand that to reduce costs this amplifier is manufactured in Vietnam but it seems Marshall doesn't have yet a reliable quality control in place.

Too bad, I don't recommend you to buy this amp if you are looking for something reliable

Marshall DSL5CR

By Dan Shugar from CA on February 14, 2018

I have been looking high and low for small tube amp with reverb when we gig at small venues, and bought this amp online to check it out. What I like about this amp is the dual channel - set up clean, and dirty, activated by footswitch, with indep channels and master volumes. Tone control is common.

I found the reverb quite tinny compared to a Fender, and the overdrive harsh. $... not alot for an amp but I was hoping for more. I played this side by side against a Carr, the Carr (admittedly a more expensive amp) was much warmer.

The Marshall is bite size and light, which is nice. Not sure if I keep it....a hassle to return, but not sure if I ever really use it when the Carr or Princeton has better tone.

A Cautionary Tale

By Tony from Iowa on March 4, 2019

First DSL5CR I had started blowing fuses for no reason after a few days. SW sent replacement model and it was fine for a while, then started making noise like a bad cable or dirty pot on guitar, which wasn't the case, and it was like somebody was turning volume up and down. I love the way this amp sounds, but I don't trust the quality of this model, which isn't made in UK. I am going to try a Blackstar Artisan 10 instead. Sweetwater has been great to work with in spite of these problems with the product itself. I just don't have enough confidence in this model to try a third one.

Disappointing and underwhelming

By Sweetwater Customer on March 13, 2022

Had high expectations for this amp after reading reviews and doing hours of research. After spending a few months fiddling with it, I've determined that it's literally impossible to get a decent sound out of this amp. I've messed with the settings tirelessly and have played strats and les pauls through it but to no avail. The bass wobbles and vibrates, the reverb is non existent even at the highest setting and the clean channel is incredibly low volume even at 10.

Perhaps I got a dud? My Spider Line 6 was 100x better for a practice amp.
