Marshall DSL 100

By Jerry O. from Milledgeville, GA

My experience with the DSL 100 .
I sent the first one back immediately for an exchange due
to a very serious hum / buzz emanating from the head itself .
I thought the thing was melting down or something when I
went from standby to power mode .
Note: Sound was not from the 4x12 cabinet it was connected to, but the
100w head assembly itself .
The replacement arrived within 36 hours and it makes a similar noise when
going from standby to either 50 or 100 watts but not nearly as pronounced
as the previous unit .

Beyond the strange noises the overall guitar sound from the DSL 100 and
the Les Paul is outstanding. It's just a great sound imo. I stay on the Classic
channel since I'm not a shredder so I can't comment on the Ultra Gain
side or the amp and I probably never use it .

I have 2 other Marshalls , a DSL 50 watt a JCM 900 and 2 Revv's
all of which are nearly dead quiet when under power . Would be nice if the DSL's
were handmade in the UK like my JCM 900 , Im guessing they wouldn't
be as noisy. I'd pay extra for the additional quality of a handwired UK made DSL .

Bottom line its a good sounding amp as far as the guitar sound goes and
with a 4x12 moves the air around quite nicely .

A beautiful thing…

By Sweetwater Customer

I have always played through solid state amps until now, but after purchasing the DSL100, I will never go back. I had been playing my acoustic more in recent years but will be plugging in more because of the DSL100, and… it's a beautiful thing!

amp head

By John U. from LEXINGTON, OK

I was pleasantly surprised at how this amp can dial in that 70's and 80's tone that I have been striving for. With the 6 switch foot pedal this is just what I was looking for. My pedal board has been gathering dust since I got this.

Great amp, not for me though

By Rob from Rural PA

I bought a second hand DSL100HR with the 6 button footswitch a little over a year ago. It is the first Marshall amp I've owned, although I've played a few others in the past. I bought it in hopes to get some tasty classic rock tones. I am after the JTM sound, which I knew I was not going to get, but hoped to get close. The DSL does not, not at all.

But the tones it does have are fantastic! This will do all those classic 80s metal/hard rock tones that we love. It has so much gain that it really is very fun to play.

The amount of control it allows you is amazing as well. Two master volumes, a reverb control per channel (not great, but at least it is there), volume and gain per channel, ample EQ options. Plus if you get the 6 pedal footswitch, you can turn on/off the fx loop, reverb, and change masters. I am not one for channel switching amps (this is my first), but all the control options sure are nice!

So now to why this is a 4 star review. This amp is way too gainy, it is fizz city! That might be ok for some, but even the high gain channel is almost unusable after halfway up on the gain knob.

The crunch channel is so gainy that it makes it hard to get a nice, natural, dynamic edge of breakup tone. I was under the impression that the classic gain channel was basically a plexi, it is not. On a 1959/1987 plexi-style circuit, you start to get breakup with the volumes around 4, but before then, it is well clean. At 10, you get a great dirty tone. I was hoping for a similar feel from the gain and volume knobs with the DSL, but it does not. The Crunch channel is way past what a Plexi can do. The Crunch and OD1 channels are basically identical, which is way too much gain for a "crunch" tone.
If the crunch channel was 30% less gainy, this amp would probably be my favorite!

But this is obviously subjective, so maybe this is exactly what someone else wants.

I do have a story about the DSL series, if it helps anyone in their search for classic/vintage tone on a budget. As I mentioned, I was after a JTM tone. Great cleans, awesome mid gain crunch & lead.
So years ago, I went into my local store and asked to shoot a few amps back to back, the DSL40CR was one of them. Coming into the store I thought I was going to leave with the DSL. So I start trying out all these amps, the Marshall is first and it just doesn't impress me. I like the 80s hard rock sounds on it, but that is not what I am after. I try a few others and they are all cool, but again, not a JTM. Until I get to the Fender Bassbreaker 45, I plug my strat in, give it a nice big strum… and there it is. That classic JTM tone I'm after.
It makes sense since the Bassbreaker 45 is a Bassman preamp that has been Marshallized alongside a "Marshally" power amp. So, if you are looking at one of these DSL amps but you know you are looking for a "Plexier" tone, you might want to give those Bassbreakers a look.

But since I already have a Bassbreaker 45, and my dreamed JTM45, I will keep this DSL for those gainier classic Marshall tones.

By John W. from knoxville, TN
Music Background: BROKEN SIDE

I bought this amp in 2020 and let me tell you how this thing has survived dozens of gigs at a time. A lot of getting moved around in and out of trailers and across many state lines. Band practices every weekend and constantly being carried in and out of my home. I will say I have never dropped it so I have that going for me. This thing is reliable! And the tones and gain stages are so good! I haven't done any tube rolling with it yet but after these tubes bite the dust I might just keep using marshall brand tubes. I am not disappointed. So glad I have this amp. If you're on the fence about buying this amplifier don't be. Buy it.

Best Tube Amp I ever owned!

By Doug R. from Duluth, GA
Music Background: Owner, musician and engineer at Nothing But You Music recording studio.

This Marshall is extremely clean and versatile. I have owned it now since 6/2018 and it has never had a single problem. I have it playing through 2 Marshall 4x12 cabinets, one a straight face and one a slant face to make a stack. I have since placed the amp on an amp table and the two cabinets under the table for better use of space and ease of use as it sets the amp down at about eye level when sitting on a chair in front of the amp.

It's nice, but you're getting what you pay for

By Locke

Let me start off by saying that I like this amp. Especially with an overdrive in front. I haven't played a JCM or JVM, so I can't compare the sounds, but I can definitely get a GNR or Nirvana vibe out of it. That said, the amp isn't without its faults. For one thing, the on board reverb sucks. For another, this is one of the cheaper tube based 100w amps, and to reach that price point, Marshall made some decisions that could affect longevity.

In my case, I bought this amp in 2021, and three years later ran into an issue caused by the glue they used to hold down the capacitors drying out and turning conductive, causing one of the resistors attached to the filtering caps (r9) to begin arching to the trace running underneath it that runs between R11 and R49. In fact, it arched so bad that half the copper trace was destroyed. Fortunately it was a relatively easy fix for someone who is comfortable with a soldering iron and multimeter, although it was a pain to remove all the dried glue with isopropyl alcohol and a few hundred q-tips. But, it did necessitate running a new wire, replacing several resistors, and the filtering caps. (I replaced all the capacitors in the amp in fact even though it wasn't strictly necessary).

I'm not saying this particular issue is common for this amp. In fact, the arching of r9 it seems to have only happened to myself and one other person on the marshall forums, while issues arising from the conductive glue are a bit more common. My point is that to save money, a cheaper glue was used, cheaper capacitors were used, cheaper resisters were used, etc. And while these components work fine for most of the time, ultimately it's more likely that they will cause an issue somewhere down the line, and due to the cost of the amp, depending on the cause of the problem, it wouldn't make financial sense to send it to a repair tech in lieu of buying a new one.

So would I recommend buying this amp? Yes, I would. It sounds great, does everything I've asked of it, and has been very versatile. I think that under normal conditions, it likely will last most players several years. However, I don't believe that it will be the last tube amp you ever buy

Oh, and the reverb sucks.

A monstrous amp.

By Rowan M. from Seattle, WA

It's an all-tube 100-watt Marshall. For just over $. 'Nuff said. In all reality, though, this amp is even better than most people think. It mostly gets a bad rap because of the MX cabs that go with them. The MX cabs have G12E-60 speakers, which are very similar to Rocket 50s, which are cheap speakers. They give an unbalanced and fizzy sound. This thing with good speakers is an absolute beast. Even on low volume with a single greenback, it will match a JCM800. Everything from crystal cleans to blistering leads, it's difficult NOT to get a great sound. It does have an MDF case, which is expected at this price point, but it's surprisingly sturdy. It is made in Vietnam, but it doesn't seem to have any bearing on the quality, and made in the US/UK is starting to be more of a status symbol than anything else. The reverb is a bit weak, but it works fine in a pinch and anyone so interested in reverb will probably just get pedals anyway. This amp with a nice cab will beat out a JCM800 with a cheap cab any day.

Absolute beast of an amp

By Rowan M. from Seattle, WA

Sure, it's mdf and pcb with solid state components, but come on. It's a 100-watt tube marshall for less than $. And sure, maybe it's not made in the US or UK, but at this point, that's more of a status symbol than an actual indication of quality. So far, my DSL100 has been rock solid. The ultra channel is a bit fizzy, and it feels like there's permanently a drive pedal. It sounds great for some metal tones and Rhandy Roads-type stuff, but I don't use it too much. The classic channel, on the other hand, is amazing. Crystal-clear cleans? You got it. Light crunch? Done. Edge-of-breakup? Just crank the gain. Epic metal tones? Just toss on your drive of choice! The verb is a little weak but still a nice touch especially seeing as anyone that particular about their reverb will want the full control of a pedal, and the master volumes are handy. IMPORTANT NOTE: The MX cabs use cheap speakers that are very similar to Rocket 50s, and they sound like trash. The tone is in the speaker, the speaker is what has the final say on the tone. It doesn't matter if you have to buy used, or get a Harley Benton 2x12, just make sure you get a cab that is actually good. With some greenbacks, this thing ROARS! For affordable cabs that don't have crap speakers, on sweetwater anyways, you could get the Line 6 4x12 and replace the speakers, if you get some monotone BV series speakers, that would in total cost around $150 more than one of the Marshall MX 4x12s. If you want a real Marshall cab, you could also get a 1936, which is a 2x12 with better speakers. Used is an option, and on Thommannmusic.com there are Harley Benton cabinets for cheaper than the speakers that come with them, which is just crazy. Basically, this amp is a 100-watt beast, and is amazing for the price; Just don't expect much of the drive channel or reverb, and use it with a good cab!

DSL 100hr

By Josh L. from Georgetown, KY
Music Background: Guitar player/drummer/musician for over 25 years. Mostly metal and rock/hard rock...

So I ordered the DSL 100hr head on December 19th of 2020 and had to wait a total of ten months for the amp to arrive due to issues at Marshall. Sweetwater kept me updated as much as possible and Ivan (my rep) was a blessing. The amp arrived on October 19th 2021 and I spent the first few weeks really dialing in the amp and getting used to it. I had the 6 button foot switch for it which really makes a world of difference and is a must have for this amp. I haven't ever even used the 2 button switch that comes with the amp. I skipped on the MX cabs for these heads and originally paired it with my oversized Butcher cabs loaded with Celestion g12k-85s in them but I ended up buying a new cab loaded with V30s for this amp it it sounds incredible. I play everything with this amp and boost the green ultra gain channel with a Boss SD-1 and it chugs like a beast! I've got a good sounding, totally clean, clean channel setup and the effects loop is good on this amp as well. I've put tons and tons of hours on the amp and it's handled it no problem so far. Sometimes the digital reverb doesn't "load in" and the amp needs restarted but that's the only issue I have ever had with it. It's loud and proud, extremely versitile, and gives you that Marshall tone in spades! I recommend this amp for anyone playing anything from classic rock on up to modern metal. Tons of gain and tightens right up like any hi-gain amp with just a boost, of an overdrive pedal.

This thing is AMAZING

By Rowan
Music Background: Playing guitar for many years, drums for longer

I've tried many amps, Boss Katana, Yamaha, even the Orange Micro Dark, and none have come close. This thing puts out screaming, nasty leads, massive crunchy overdrive, and beautiful sparkly cleans. It's made in Vietnam, but who cares? The build quality is solid and I've had no problems. The included footswitch is great, and the reverb is a little weak, but you could just toss a pedal into the fx loop and have your super specific reverb exactly how you like it.

Marshall is the way to go if I could afford it I would go for the 3k$ heads if the dsl sounds like this I can imagine what the other Marshall head's sounds like call Mr Godlove today from Sweetwater is the only place to buy there warranty is free and there advice is worth more I couldn't believe how much other companies charge just to shop at there place and there warranty's doesn't come close to Sweetwater did I mention same prices and a heck of alot more warranty for FREE

Identity Crisis

By Joseph from Forest City, NC
Music Background: Guitarist 31 years

A great amp! One thing about it though is that the 2555X is a more simple two channel growl I may get later on. Another thing about Marshall is the Mesa Dual Rectifier which I may get later on. The big thing is this is my first amp with an effects loop, which I luckily mastered the concept of. Time based pedals through the loop, boost, wash and such up front. I'm popping my collar on that one. That brings me to concepts of MIDI, Kemper, laptops, drop tops, got more than plenty and have much not!

It Screams

By Wayne S. from TACOMA, WA
Music Background: Bedroom Player

I've never owned a Marshall amp. I've usually leaned toward American Stuff like Fender and Peavey, but I've had Trace Elliott and Bugera heads before and my Hughes and Kettner combo has been my go-to for about twenty years, so I'm not at all leery of the stuff from the other side of the pond, I've just never had any Marshall stuff. I saw this amp listed as a good-as-new return for about 60-70% of the retail price and it simply called to me. I did my research on YouTube and the forums and I knew I had to give it a whirl. Here are the pros and cons.

Pros:
-Loud as ****
-Excellent variety of gain options
-Sounds really, really good when you crank it through a good 4x12. Seriously, so good. It might make you rethink your life.
-Clean is also excellent
-Appears to be built like a tank

Cons:
-Only one EQ
-Emulation/line out sounds like **** (I've never found an amp where this sounds good)
-Tone can get brittle at lower gains/volumes
-Big and heavy (Come on, this is 2022!)
-Even as a budget Marshall this is far more expensive than many similarly spec'd competitors. You're probably going to have to pay more for this than I did .

Sounds good when it works

By Nate L. from Bargersville, IN

I love the tone of this head, but unfortunately I've had nothing but problems with it in the 2 years since I've owned it. A faulty FX loop (sent to Marshall and they did something to fix it). A bad switch on another issue and the most recent is it's not drawing any voltage now. It always tends to happen right before a gig, too which is super frustrating.

I will add this though... my singer has the 100H and balls wise, the HR cannot compare when we're in the same room. We've tried the same settings, same cab, etc... and his 100H (with 15 year old tubes that have never been replaced) blows the 100HR out of the water. I have no idea why.

So, I don't know if I just got a lemon or what. Love it when it works, and when not comparing it directly to the 100H.

Sounds good, but mine is a lemon

By Nate

I bought mine new from sweet water in 2018 and it's been a nightmare the whole time (no fault of sweetwaters)

To start in the first year it was retubed. No big deal. I didn't expect the stock tubes to be much good anyways, especially considering the amp was built in Vietnam.
The input jack fell into the head shortly after, and something else broke.
Then the tubes went out again shortly after the tech fixed the input jack.

And now for some reason the amp only makes noise while it's completely dimed. And it isn't loud, or a good sound. This amp is rubbish

Good gigging amp.

By nick from NC - North Carolina
Music Background: 29 years

Amp is what I was looking for. Good for any style and will cover all the tones I need. Sound and tone are on point for a good recording amp and work killer for playing out live. I have other amps that I love 2555x, Fargen, Orange. But I needed , just good tube amp that will cover a lot of ground, sound killer and that didn't cost a bundle, to use on the go. This amp fits that bill. Some may think a 100 watt tube amp is to much. Butt head room is needed some times and head room it has. Mostly use preamp gain and not power amp gain anyway even with small amps. Build is on point with any other amp that is pcb. Don't care for the mdf. But what are you going to do? The world we live in now. Only things I did not care for are the tubes it ships with could be better. They are not bad, just not tun sol or eh that i am use to. But no big deal, they can be changed out. What was not good was when it came I checked the bias before I did anything. Was set way way to hot. Don't know what happened there but 87ma on one side and 89 on the other is to much. I got it set into spec and all is good. Marshall needs to have this looked into, and maybe have dealers double check before amps go out. If you buy one. Check or have bias checked! Not trying to scare any one but if you are running a tube amp this stuff needs to be looked at anyway. All in all I am happy and would buy again. A good amp for a good price.

Good amp, but disappointed in the clean sound.

By Moops
Music Background: Semi pro gigging musician a while ago but currently raising a family so no gigs right now. Rock.

Title says it all. I like the amp and am keeping it. The super leads were generally known for one type of sound and the DSL follows that sound well. For classic sounds it can't replace a 1959 or a 2203 but it can come close enough in a pinch. For all the ranges of more distortion it sounds great. Clean sounds are a bit disappointing. Adding a little bit of gain to the clean to get that edge of breakup sound or a little bit of light gritty clean gets pretty strong on the lows. Flubby came to mind but I'm not sure that's how most people use it. You can get an ok clean sound but it's not that flexible. The strength of the amp is the distortion. I liked all 3 of the distortion settings. You can get some pretty decent dynamics from messing with your attack and guitar volume even on ultra gain.

Hell of an Amp!

By Andrew A. from Fulton, NY
Music Background: 23 years of playing blues, rock, country, jazz and metal

So let me start off by saying I had a Marshall JVM410h w/ a 1960B cab which I sold about 6 years ago (was my dream amp) to help through some hard times. Was one of my favorite amps I ever owned except it was a bit noisy even with a boss ns2 to quiet it down a bit. Ever since I sold it Ive wanted it back. Though I can't justify dropping $4000 on a half stack. I was however able to swing 1400 for this DSL100hr and MX412BR cab. I played on a dsl40c at gc and loved I just hoped the head would be as pleasing. So I pulled the trigger and ordered the head and cab through Sweetwater (gc is where I try things out to see if I want them due to I live in upstate ny and then order from sweetwater, to many bad experiences with gc. sweetwater's quality control is far superior.) Anyway I talked to Evan who I've always gone through since I started ordering from sweetwater and as usual they got it to me fast, 4 days after I had called, with updates every step of the way. When the head and cab showed up it was packaged nicely. So to the amp... this thing is probably the best bang for your buck out there Im literally so happy that it sounds like a marshall. It's a 2 channel but minus the 2 extra channels and separate eqs it's just as good as I remember my jvm, without the noise didn't even have to put the ns2 into it. Had tuned the EQs to my liking in no time. Cleans are nice marshall clean, crunch has the marshall roar close to that of the classic super lead, od1 has a brown sound to 80s metal and od2 is all out high gain. All channels sound great. I Will say go over 11 o'clock gain on OD2 it does turn to mush trust me you don't need much more and if you do push it with an od pedal, and over 2 o'clock on od1 starts to mud up as well. I keep resonance all the way down if I'm playing loud if I'm at bedroom level I do 11 o'clock and it sounds great, presence I keep around 3 o'clock all the time. The Reverb is a joke but for me not a deal breaker, separate master volumes awesome! I was very skeptical with it being made in vietnam but both the head and cab are killer, can't speak for components and reliability as I only had it for a month but tone wise it's a beast, if you are on the fence about if a vietnamese marshall can sound as good as a uk marshall I'm hear to tell you it can. I've owned and traded or sold in the past a peavey 6505, marshall jvm410, marshall jcm900, krank krankenstein and a mesa dual rectifier, all good in their own way but I would say the dsl is more versatile than any of them with the exception of the JVM. Thanks again Evan Mehre and sweetwater for delivering great quality controlled products everytime since I switched to you guys 5 years ago.

If you like the Marshall sound .. but don't want to spend $$$$... buy this amp.

By nathan from Connecticut
Music Background: METAL METAL and METAL

so I have this amp, and I also have the Marshall jvm410, which is 3x more expensive. they sound very similar.
yes its assembled in Vietnam and not England, that's partly why its less expensive.. but its definatley a Marshall and it has the goods.
sounds great at low volume and its fine for home practice as well as band practice. fx loop works fine. plenty of gain. reverb is meh..
great great amp especially for the cost. I sold my rockerverb 50 (again, much more expensive amp) because to me this amp sounded better!

Finally, a Tube Marshall!

By George

Great cleans, great dirty/high gain. Lots of tone options, FX loop is nice. Biggest complaint is, in my opinion, the simulated out is bad, sounds off. However, who's in it for that! Doesn't take pedals extremely well, but for just straight tone, its solid!

Heaven and hell

By Joel M.

This amp will deliver whatever sound you need. Paired with the MX cabinets and less than half of the big brother it still puts a smile on your face. The clean channel is precise but the dirty channel is punchy and loud. You will be impressed. Thanks Jason.

That Marshall Sound

By Sweetwater Customer from South Carolina

I have a Marshall DSL40 and it sounds great but I've always wanted a big Marshall setup. I decided to step up and get myself the DSL100HR paired with the MX412AR. In a word...WOW. It sounds great and has that classic Marshall crunch. It is punishing loud even at 50W. So glad I also got the JHS Little Black Amp Box. It allows me to turn the amp up to where it wants to be and dial back the volume so I don't make anyone angry or deaf.

If you have the opportunity to get your hands on one of these you should. I can't recommend it enough.

Finally A Tube Amp

By Kevin L. from New York
Music Background: Semi Professional Guitarist 53 yrs

I've been playing Guitar since I was 12(now 65) I had the honor of playing through Fender Black Face tube amps of the 70s.Solid State was more affordable as my playing advanced so I played thru all the ones of the day. Now in 2020 I decided to go for the Marshall tube sound with the DSL100. Im older and like to play LOUD lol, the Clean channel is great and the Gain channel sizzles when the Tubes heat up. Love this amp and recommend it and Sweetwater for making me a Happy customer

I'm very happy, neighbors are not.

By Brendan D. from Burlington, CT
Music Background: Mimicking cats sounds, mockingly.

900 bucks should not be enough to afford such monstrous power and roaring tone. I personally think that each of the 2x2 channels sounds amazing, but the cops tell me that my neighbors aren't as thrilled. Maybe it sounds worse when it's rattling their windows and terrorizing their dachshunds, but that's just their opinion. Fortunately, the modeled headphone output is actually very wholesome compared to most.

This amp doesn't skimp on the quality of its features, and has just enough in terms of quantity to create a diverse array of sounds. The reverb is just enough to sweeten your tone, and anything wetter would probably rely on personal preference an warrant a specific pedal or plugin. Tge tone shift is neat; dial something you like and hit a button to jostle it to a roughly equivalent but distinctly different profile (it works like a 1/0 version Blackstar's ISF knob). The footswitch is a nice cherry on top of a decadent sundae of sounds and functionality.

Plenty of power on tap...

By Joe from Savannah, TX

Always wanted to own a Marshall tube head and finally got one. This head has a really nice clean and crunch tone. Im still figuring it out and finding new settings everyday. Was playing with the settings and it also has plenty of gain on ultra gain setting. I haven't tried any pedals on this head yet but i can imagine its going to sound really good with a little chorus and OD. Very happy with this purchase. Andy Scheer got me set up with everything in the pic.

Awesome, nuff said.

By Shea O. from Kingman, AZ
Music Background: Southern Rock, Classic Rock, and Country. I little old school metal thrown in there just to keep it loud.

What a beautiful beast. I had always wanted a Marshall and the good ole boys at Sweetwater made me an offer I couldn't refuse. This thing is outstanding. Great tones across all the channels, and a twin master volume set up that actually works. At 50 watts I can get all the tine I want and still keep the volume at a friendly level at the house. Kick it to 100 watts and crank up the masters and watch out - yeah, it's punishingly loud. Great amp. I did opt to get the 6 mode peddle (Marshall PEDL-91005), the thing works great and reall adds to the functionality of the amp when recording or playing live.

My first tube Marshall.

By Michael M. from Portsmouth, OH
Music Background: Hobbyist

This is my first tube Marshall and it kicks ***! I've used this to play everything from hendrix to metallica. The cleans are very resonant and when tuned it correctly can produce a very nice bright tone. The crunch is everything you expect from a Marshall, this I use for alot of punk and Nirvana riffs.
Switching over to the gain channel, all I can say is wow! The green side of the ultra gain channel gives you a very nice hard rock tone. I would like to get ahold of a tube screamer to really put some umph into this section. Hitting the red section of the ultra gain, holy cow! Way more gain than I was expecting. Coming from a solid state Marshall hdfx100, I anticipated the gain to be far less intense. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! Heavy saturation but surprisingly not muddy. Mainly use this for Metallica and heavy riffage.
Overall, a great amp that has converted me to the dark side. I will forever be a tube amp player from here on. Big shout out to sweetwater and my sales rep Nick Farmer. Sweetwater is my go to for anything and everything guitar and recording related.

First Marshall

By A from TN
Music Background: 32 years. Play at home for fun.

After my Peavey 5150 that I've owned for 25ish years crapped out on me. While the Peavey is getting fixed,I decided to go with a Marshall. Oh man, this bad boy will wake the dead. When I turned it on and hit that E power chord, "Oh yeah, it's a Marshall." The tones you can get out of this is awesome and sounds good with my 5150 cabinet. I'm planning on getting a 1960A Marshall cabinet soon, so I will be getting that from Sweetwater.
Sweetwater as always is on their game when it comes to shipping fast and their top notch customer service.
Rob Amaral emailed me to let me know it was on the way. Thanks Rob and thanks Sweetwater.

Marshall DSL100HR Head

By Sweetwater Customer

So far so good. Raw, punchy, Marshall tube tone in all 4 modes. With 100 roaring watts, it is of course capable of massive sound, but is also surprisingly controllable at lower volumes. In fact, it sounds far better and is more controllable at bedroom practice volumes than the 40w fender combo it replaced.

DSL100HR

By Bruce from Rockford, IL
Music Background: Old Time Rocker (70s-80s) - Intermediate with a lot of heart.

I was not sure what to expect. Been using a old peavey 'Duece' vintage 1979. Fell in love with the sound right away. Was not sure how the 4 channel setup was going to be, me trying to be simple, was used to 2 channel with effect loop on one channel only. THEN, wow i was blown away the sound capabilities. Clean sound with classic crunch takes me back some years, now i'm dating myself, and the Ultra channel with two two OD settings. You can really imitate variety of marshall heads. I always wanted an JCM800, that's what my favorite bands use, now I can have my old peavy sound with classic crunch and then switch to super overdrive for a JCM type sound. In conclusion I like this head so much I bought TWO...

Sweetwater, to me, is the best option for getting quality equipment, they know what doing!

My first Marshall!

By Craig F. from Maine
Music Background: 35 years of guitar playing

For having waited so long (35 years of playing guitar) the wait was worth it for this one. I can't say enough good things about it, and the only thing I really don't care for is the reverb isn't to my liking. Other than that, the amp is just a-mazing. It sounds awesome at whatever volume you need to use, and it sounds glorious at loud levels! If you are passing this one by because of the price, then you are a fool. And, if you are opting for more expensive amps to make yourself feel better, then again, you are a fool. This is all the amp you need! Pull that trigger man!

What a Beast!!!

By Steve from Midwest
Music Background: Seeker of Tone

This amp has all the gain you will ever need and loud enough to shake the house. The cleans are pristine and the two OD channels are excellent from rock to metal. Get a chorus, flanger and phaser pedal and you have any EVH sound you want. This thing is heavy and built like a truck. Plenty of room for tubes to cool after hours of playing. Comes with two button led switch that controls the channel and fx loop. I have the six button on order so that should help a bit more with switching around. Thanks goes out to Mickey Cushing for sending this amp out fast and safe. Oh this head is also fun for the neighbors

My first Marshall!

By Craig F. from Pittston, ME
Music Background: 35 years of guitar playing

Ordered this the same day that my Laney Ironheart 120 stopped working - you can see it in the picture, now providing support for the Marshall, lol. Have owned so many amps through the years, but never a Marshall. I couldn't be happier with this amp, and I am still finding different sound settings, even after a month of owning it.
I keep the amp on the Classic Gain channel, and this one is supposed to be the JCM800-type channel. I love it!
The throatiness and authoritative snarl that comes out of this amp is just amazing. It is hard to believe that the Marshall sound can be had for under a grand, but here it is! I will say that the ONLY gripe I have is with the reverb (both types). Not good at all!
I have a multi-effects pedal running through the effects loop and use the reverb from it. I can't understand how Marshall would pack so much goodness into the amp, and skimp on the reverb. Ah well. This is certainly not a deal-breaker, and it is so easy to provide reverb to an amp these days. Go for it, you won't be disappointed with this one!

There is no equal to the sound of a Marshall

By Edward W. from Brentwood, NY

It's been some decades since I owned a Marshall, but the specs on this one made me pull the trigger and I couldn't be happier that I did. This amp sounds EXACTLY as I wanted my amp to sound and it took all of five minutes to dial that sound in. Hitting it in the front with a Catalinbread Naga Viper (which I also purchased from Sweetwater sometime ago) brings the magical tone that I have always been searching for (and BTW, as others have stated, this thing sounds great even at LOW volumes! Go figure).

OD 2 sounds like mush when you go past 10 o'clock, but I stop there and (as mentioned above) boost it anyways, so who cares. The clean channel sounds incredible by just turning my guitar volume down a bit (as do the overdrive channels I must say) and the reverb sounds...I guess it's a personal thing. If you want your reverb to sound 'in your face', then this is NOT the amp for you, but if you want it to sit nicely in the background, then look no further (I personally don't use it, but I totally get that there are a lot of players who'll love it). The emulated output sounds shockingly realistic and the ability to silently play/record while the amp is on STANDBY I believe is a new normal all players should demand in their amplifiers.

Speaking of the Clean Channel, punching a Big Muff through it sounds absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!! GORGEOUS tone and this amp takes pedal so well I am shocked (even my trusty SD-1 sounds killer through it). Very little noise through either channel and the tonal possibilities are quite vast if you know how to work your guitars volume and tone knobs and (if you so choose to use (as I do) pedals).

BTW, decided to buy a pair of Greenbacks (from Sweetwater) and pair them in an old Ampeg 4x12 with a pair of Vintage 30's annnnnnnd let me say.......THE sound of rock. There is no 'substitute for a Marshall'. There is only a Marshall. Live the dream, my friends. Live the Dream.

Great for big clubs and arenas...

By Mica from Seattle
Music Background: Professional w/10,000+ hrs

I was able to dial in a circa 1975 "brown" British overdrive (channel one)and a scooped mid metal tone (channel two) for solos with nothing but a Vox Wah between my #1 Strat and the DSL 100. As a former owner of '69 Plexis, JTM-45s, and JCM800s, this is now my go to rig. The price is right too, Bob! I use one clean and one wet in stereo with 2 1960As & 2 1960Bs for a total of 8 Celestion creambacks @16 ohms. A Kemper profiler takes up the slack that the Marshall can't rein in. I would recommend this model to anyone gigging anywhere with more than 500 sound damping sweating bodies. Enjoy!

Love this amp head. It does all the things I need it to, very well. If you do purchase one I would suggest that you also get the 6 button floor switch. ( it comes with a 2 button ) For live situations I can easily go from clean sounds to some nasty over driven gain filled leads with one step of the button. You can also switch your effects loop on and off with the floor switch. I'm super stoked with this Marshall....thank you

Great tube amp, Marshall tone for less $$$!!!

By Mark T. from New Hampshire
Music Background: home musician, 40+ years of making noise...

This is a great amp, it gets that great JCM800 type tone, & the cleans are best I have heard from any Marshall amp I have owned, (I have had a few of them over my 40 years of playing)...
You definitely need to play with the settings as this has alot of different controls than most Marshall amps, & you will need the 6 button (optional) foot switch, or you will not be able to use all settings in a live environment...
Just a tip....Make sure you keep the CLASSIC GAIN & ULTRA GAIN volumes past 3 (or higher), then turn your gains up as needed to get rid of that fuzz/fizz tone it will produce...It will sound similar to an EH Big Muff PI if you do not...

Woo Hoo

By Carmine R. from Chicago
Music Background: Player

Love this amp. And what a great price! A true WINDOW RATTLER!!! Clean channel is bright and distinct, the dirty channel lets you really get gnarly tones and rocking riffs! The EQ settings can really mix it up giving you just the right style to fit your needs. Then add in the selectable power option and you can tame things down for smaller spaces. Hats off MARSHALL and Thumbs up SWEETWATER!

Can't think of better bang for the buck

By Sweetwater Customer

Really can't think of a better bang-for-the-buck amplifier to be honest. I've owned amps that literally cost more than 4x the price of this amplifier and I've ended up selling those. I don't use it for over the top gain, but it sounds killer for lower gain levels too. So many amps claim to be "Marshall like" bit as soon as you plug into this revoiced DSL, you'll say "there it is".... That Marshall sound. With the optional (and very back ordered) 6 button footswitch, you can access all its voicing options via footpedal. Has a very useable clean channel and is quiet. Seriously a great amp.

Review Update (1+ years with the amp)

By Michael I. from Fort worth, TX
Music Background: Guitar 18 Years, Drums 4 years. Competent player on a budget

After having this amp for a year I had to come back and update my review but since i cant figure out how to do that I'm just going to write another review. If you scroll down or up lol you should be able to find my first review as well. So, this amp has been absolutely incredible. I guarantee it can do any tone you want it to with any type of guitar an pickup combination. The trick is learning how to dial in the preamp volume and gain then the master volume just right. What really helped me was realizing that all four "channels" can clean up all the way if you lower your guitars volume and set the preamp volume and gain just right. Once I realized this, it opened up all the possibilities in the world from bright clean to warm clean to bright crunch to warm crunch all the way up to high gain very saturated but still a good tone not overly full or bassy. The differences in each channel comes from the tone you get as you raise the volume on your guitar or at the preamp. Basically if you want a warmer tone youd raise the preamp volume and depending on how much saturation you want you'd raise or lower the gain. A good way to get started is to keep the gain low if your preamp volume is up high and keep the preamp volume low if the gain is up high. You will eventually be able to do all sorts of precise tones with the amp but that's a good way to get started, but far from the only way to get good tones. It wasn't a walk in the park to figure out the amp precisely but it was a walk in the park getting some good tones right off the bat. Just don't make the mistake of thinking you know the amp inside and out after a month or two. It blows my mind how I'm still finding ways to get my tone even closer to what's in my head after a year. It certainly is a Marshall and it has the warm Marshall growl while still having excellent cleans which was important to me. It takes pedals really well, im currently running 9-10 pedals on average and I don't have any trouble with noise. The amp hissed a little at first but after I put in Electro Harmonix Power tubes it went away. The EH power tubes are a little less wattage than the JJ's which really helped make the amp more controllable. With the JJ's it was a little too "full" and the bass got flubby to quickly but now thats not a problem at all and I can turn the amp up above 3/4 max volume and still have minimal background noise. Its just as quite as any other quality amp on the market. I think a lot of the hiss comes from the JJ's and the high gain 12ax7s. I think the amp stock is a little too full and bassy but its still an excellent amp stock i just personally think changing the tubes and dialing back the gain just a little bit by using lower gain 12ax7s made my amp perfect. I'm using high gain humbuckers(Seymour Duncan JB) pups 60% of the time. If I was using single coils more often the stock tubes would have worked great probably. I also play an esp ltd 7 string with fishman fluence modern 7 pups in it and it also sounds really really good through this amp. Anyways I've gone on too long and if I don't stop myself I'll keep writing until I'll need a publishing deal for my book. Bottom line IT IS A GREAT AMP, if you feel otherwise you almost certainly haven't spent enough time with it or you are not dialing it in right.

Nothing like a real tube Marshall head

By John P. from Los Angeles
Music Background: Rock n' Roll guitar player

First off: been playing Marshalls forever. Had a JCM 900 workhouse I loved. Recently went down the modelling rabbit hole and got a Code 100 head. It was a really neat device. Sounded okay on some of the settings when manipulated, but when it got louder, it felt like something was missing. The CODE is cool, but it feels like a really good version of Amplitube put into a power amp box. Which is not too shabby! But I needed that extra 5%. I wish I'd had CODE amps when I was first starting. But this is about the difference between a modelling amp and an actual tube Marshall.

As great as many of the modelling amps have become, they still can't truly compete with a real tube amp. The DSL 100HR delivers abundantly.

Many manufacturers and players talk about the many sounds you can get out of a modelling amp. This head gives you plenty of different sounds, too. And they're all great sounding. You can dial back the distortion and use the Classic Gain channel to get a great, garage-rock, Tom Petty/E Street Band great rythm guitar sound that just breathes.

You can certainly get some great, smooth cleaner tones out of this, as well. The whole roll-off the volume knob to lower the gain and get a good clean sound is very responsive. Add a little more gain and you get some great Social Distortion/AC/DC action. There's a very diverse set of tones and sounds you can get with some tweaking.

The High Gain channel delivers. Marshall is a rock amp, after all, and the high gain is luscious and spongey, with that distinct Marshall tube sag and response. This is true with my Les Paul with Seymour Duncans, a Tele with hot rails, and even a single coil Strat, although less so, of course.

Tons of solid state and tube amps sound good with medium gain, playing chords. Where you really notice a difference is in the lead playing. Notes on the DSL do not fall off quickly. They sustain. They live. They are very musical, taking on a legatto feel. Runs don't vanish in tons of noise, either.

VOLUME. This sounds perfectly great at a lower volume on the 50 watt setting. Some reviewers have stated it doesn't sound good unless it's dimed. I don't share that sentiment. I thought it sounded terrific at bedroom volume. Cranking the 50 watt setting can get more than loud enough for most bands. The 100 watt setting gives more, and the tone is slightly more 'open' and 'wide' in the 100 watt, but it's not that huge a difference. They've done well with cutting the wattage between 50 and 100 watts vs going from 4 tubes to 4.

Big thanks to Jacob Leonhardt, my amazing Sales Rep, for this. And also to Nick Bowcott's awesome Sweetwater videos for Marshall. They made all the difference.

BOTTOM LINE: I'm not opposed to the new digital amps at all. Some are quite good. But at the end of the day? A Marshall tube amp is like a Harley Davidson. A perfect design. Classic. For many a good reason. There's nothing like a real Marshall tube amp.

Excellent customer service and top quality amp.

By Sweetwater Customer

The amp is amazing!! Beautiful cleans and the distortion, is, well, out of this world incredible! Very LOUD.. What do you expect, all tube. I bought the higher end attenuator that they sell, amazing as well. It allows you to fully saturate the tubes at lower volume. Unless you can crank this amp and no one complains about the volume, then you have to get an attenuator or you"ll peel the paint off the walls and blow out the windows. Also, thecustomer service reps at Sweetwater are top of the line. Very knowledgeable, professional, polite, and just all around solid employees. I highly recommend any musician to purchase from Sweetwater. You can"t go wrong with this company.

60 Years of Marshall in One Package.

By Bob from NorCal
Music Background: 43 years of plectrum to string, at home and on stage.

I have owned many different Marshall amps since the 70s, and this DSL100HR can sonically recreate most all of them. I still own my 1980 JMP 2204 which I can recreate nearly exactly with the DSL, so now I can let her rest after a great 39 years of flawless rock & roll service.

I like that I can also conjure up a stock JMP, a stock JCM800, a "Jose" Modded JCM800, or a very close rendition of a Friedman BE100. The clean channel can reproduce Fender-type crystal clean tones which the JMP and JCM800 could never do, modified or stock. The onboard reverb is pretty useless for me, so I run a TC Hall of Fame into the loop, along with other pedals.

I had to re-bias the DSL100HR right after I got it because it sounded a bit harsh to me. When I got the amp, the bias was set at 89/86mv so I biased both sides to EXACTLY 80mv and the amp sings! Setting both side to be exactly identicle within a 10th of a millivolt (or tighter) is critical for a musically smooth "Violin" type sound. The low mids are now fantastic and the high end less fizzy as Marshall changed the tonal character of this model compared to the DSL100H. I can crank both overdrive channels to 10 and the amp remains punchy and tight without farting out, especially after it was rebiased. Notes just seem to hang forever with a Les Paul and harmonics abound as notes and chords decay. The tube sockets are chassis mounted, so that is a big plus for using it on the road. The dual master volumes and high/low power switch makes it a useful late night woodshedding or noodling amp.

I also have a DSL1HR which is somewhat similar to the DSL100HR, but doesn"t sound quite as good as its big sister nor is it as versatile, but is a great ultra-low wattage amp on its own accord. All in all, this DSL100HR is by far the most versatile Marshall I"ve ever owned, and is worth every penny I paid for it. Pull the trigger and buy it.

I gave the DSL100HR 4.5 stars because of the slight delay in switching channels, which the DSL1HR also does. I can compensate for that delay by clicking slightly early, but I wish they would redesign the switching circuits so it was immediate and quiet at the same time.

One last feature of the DSL100HR is that it smells like a new car interior, except $40,000 cheaper than the new car. Buy this amp! You"ll thank me later...

Jury Still Out

By Jim from Illinois
Music Background: Retired player

I am currently on my third one of these, The first one I received was a demo after a month or so it started
making a cracking noise while in the ultra channel, switched to clean and tone started wondering around,
Sent it back, no problem. Received head #2 the minute I turned it on there was a strange sound that I have never heard, two days later while playing in the ultra channel I thought there was a loud truck outside my house, No it was the amp a very loud hum that kept getting louder till it went instantly quite. The smell of ozone was thick.
No clean channel and ultra channel sounded like a guitar in a tube.
Sending it back a bit more of a chore, after almost being accused of lying amp was finally replaced.
still babying #3 hoping for no issues, this is my 5th tube amp I never had this much trouble before with any amp.

Marshall DSL100HR

By Mark S. from MI - Michigan
Music Background: Gigging Guitarist

Marshall has made a few changes to the DSL line and I must say that they are major improvements.
To start with, the EQ is much more balanced between the channels making the amp usable as a two channel amp live. The new assignable dual master volumes are a tremendous addition as well.
If I had my way I would have put the reverb on the 2 position foot switch instead of the effects loop.
The tubes that are in the amp are just ok. There is tone to be found by trying different preamp tubes.

Great Marshall!

By Kenny from Indiana

First I want to thank Ryan for the deal on my Marshall DSL 100 HR and 1960 A cab!
I play every weekend in front of 300 plus people. Big room! I am used to Vox AC30"s and a mint 1981 Peavey Mace. 160 watts.
Anyway I was frustrated with the Marshall and couldn"t figure out why. At home tones are great and loud. So onstage I was using the 50 watt setting. Used to the AC30 so why not? I have owned Marshalls before. The amp was loud enough just not right. My wife said the sound was stifled. Then I knew. A 50 watt power setting does not a 50 watt Marshall make! Not a DSL 50 even. I switched the amp to the 100 watt setting and bam! Clean not fizzy lows, pretty and not strident highs, and tight not unfocused mids.
The issue is those power reductions, all amps, as well as master volumes choke amps. I always run masters full up. The Marshall has channel volumes as well as gain. So once I ran full power, masters dimed and volume on only 2, the amp breathed. So full and responsive!
Playing in your room and recording those power options and masters work fine but live in 40 years of playing I found it best to dime them; basically taking them out of the equation. Need more gain add a pedal or go smaller to push the power amp. Yoy have to cut above bass and drums. My bassist has a Marshall bass stack! 4 12"s and a 2x15. Not loud just full.
Once I put the amp to full power EVERYONE heard the difference! LOVE the amp! Play country, classic rock and blues! I set the masters full, presence and resonance at noon as well as eq. Mids are set to six. It is loud but breathes. Dynamic and responsive. FULL! Probably one of the BEST Marshalls ever! I use the OD 1 for most gain tones but OD 2 screams! I run the classic on the red setting but gain at 2. Clean but full and push for solos with a Fulldrive2 or OCD. Play Teles, Strats and a PRS Custom 24 ten top. The 1960 A cabs are the BEST!
If you play clubs go to the 40 watt 1x12. Great amps! My next is the 20 watter 1x12!

Unexpectedly my favorite amp

By Buck

I love my Orange Crush CR120H, tested against many other amps including Fender, Katana, Line 6 Spider 5, Blackstar and others. I wasn't looking for another amp but the DSL100HR was hooked up to a Marshall 1960a cab with 4x12 G12T-75s and I tried it and was blown away instantly. I bought the Marshall head and found a Marshall 1960b used for a great price and bought it. Testing the CR120H against the DSL100HR with the 1960b confirmed that the DSL100HR was indeed the better head with that cabinet. It makes all my guitars sound so much better.

Only knock is the reverb is weak but still usable cranked all the way up. Only paul needed is a delay and I found the FlashbackX4 delay/looper to be the perfect combination.

I never looked at Marshall tube heads because I was never prepared to pay +$2000. This baby… is an absolute bargain.

I have not experienced the channel switching delay mentioned in another review.

Sounds Great

By Rick from AZ
Music Background: Hobbiest

Have it paired with a 240 watt Marshall cabinet, comparing this to my 40/20 watt DSL C that I use for a backup, the lows are much more pronounced. I don't have it broke in yet, probably just going to get better.

The best thing, there is an Mp3 input on the back, comes in handy when playing to jam tracks. Going from pentone to tritone is right in the front.

I like it a lot

1st Tube Amp

By Sean G. from Westport IN
Music Background: Musician for over 40 years

I've been playing guitar for over 40 years. I bought my first Marshall half stack when I was in my mid 20's. I got a solid stare bi'chorus head and used it for over 20 years with various multi effects pedal boards to get my sound. It was a good rig but I decided to upgrade to an all tube amp. It occurred to me that over the many years I was playing with a solid state amp, everything I was using was designed to emulate the tube sound. It wasn't always a good imitation. The one thing that always held me back was the cost. With Sweetwaters current financing promotions, I was able to get a great guitar last year so I decided this was the year I was going to get a great amp. I played a DSL at a store a few years ago and liked it. After doing some research and talking to my sales rep I settled on the DSL100HR. No Regrets. The tone is better than any amp or effect I've used before. I especially like the different modes on each channel. I'm getting sounds that I have striven to program into my effects pedal boards for years with just a twist or two on the knobs. I took it to a gig at a bar I've been playing at for years and opened it up for the first time as I've only had it for a week. The sounds I was hearing were incredible and the people I knew in the crowed noticed the difference. The best thing about this amp was the price. I'm paying collage tuition for two kids so I'm on a tight budget. I feel comfortable that I got my money's worth out of this Amp. I would highly recommend it

Great amp!

By Michael I. from Fort Worth, Tx
Music Background: Guitar Player 15 + yrs.

I've only had my dsl100hr for a few days but I've really had a great time playing it so far. First off, Sweetwater was amazing surprise surprise, I always have a good experience buying from them. This time my rep. was out when I called (Joe) but another rep. Nick was very helpful in taking down my order and getting me the price Joe had quoted me. They shipped all the stuff in my order out ASAP and I had everything withen a few days. Great experience EXCEPT they left out my candy! Inexcusable! The nerve of these guys! Lol all joking aside my buying experience was excellent.

So on to the amp, it sounds great. I actually wanted this amp for several reasons but a few off the top of my head were headroom for clean tones which it aced, the natural harmonics with single coils are beautiful. Also I needed an effects loop for my chourus, reverb, delay, Looper, etc. and it works like it's supposed to, I haven't been able to detect any tone loss when the effects loop is engaged and being able to turn the fx loop on and off has been really helpful for blanket effect on/off situations.

Now here's the reason for 4.5 stars instead of 5. I have to say this was very disappointing but not enough to return the amp as I'll probably find a work around or get used to it. When using the pedal to change channels there is a mute and delay. I love to go from crisp cleans to devastating distortion at the drop of a hat and do it very often. This amp as is cannot do that. From what I've gathered the mute and delay is to silence any channel changing clicking noises and to bleed delay and reverb. But let's get real, everyone else has seamless channel switching so it's highly disappointing that this amp doesn't. ****Now if you only don't need split second switching you'll be absolutly fine using the amp as is, it's less than a second probably but noticeable if your used to going straight into a channel change immediately as you press the footswitch.***** I've heard some people say using a different pedal for the footswitch can shorten or even remove the delay. I'm sure I'll either find this out for myself, mod the amp or pedal if possible, or just use a distortion pedal when I need fast switching. Overall I don't want this to take away from how happy I am with the amp. It's just one of those, really marshall? kind of things. I definently recommend this amp. If I had known about the channel switching thing before buying it might have kept me from buying the amp but I'm glad I didn't because minus that I love the amp! If you get one I'm sure you'll feel the same.

So far so good

By Sweetwater Customer

So far after having this amp for a short while I'm very impressed with the EQ changes marshall made, making it easier (for me at least) to dial in a tone I like compared to my JCM2000 DSL 50. This amp has a great clean tone, and the two OD channels give me all the gain I could ever need.

The emulated out was something I was really excited for and after trying it, I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously there's a difference between the live recording and emulated, but for a cab sim, it sounds great.

Overall, I would recommend for sure.
