Bad ss!! Best snare I've ever played
Amazing drum!
Just got my DW Collectors Series Purpleheart Wood snare drum and it's fantastic! I also have an DW Edge snare and a Ludwig Supraphonic (circa 1965), but this Purpleheart wood snare is now my favorite. I swapped out the original DW (Remo) batter head for an Aquarian Focus-X head and it really pops without any Moon gel or other dampening. Going to my first band rehearsal tomorrow and can't wait to play it out.

First I must say that the pics of this do not do it justice. The drum is much more beautiful in person!
It has very nice punch. It is definitely different tone than maple or birch. This snare sounds great throughout the tuning range. I am really liking it tuned a little higher - it seems to really come alive!
This Purple Heartwood Snare is...SWEET!
I fell in love with the story behind DW’s Purple Heartwood the minute I saw the videos about it (them). The snare is everything I have been looking for...and more! NIce tonality. Great response. Love the adjustable butt plate. The snare retainer is a breeze to raise and lower. And the look? ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! (Make sure you verify that the one you pick out has the small Purple Heart on the shell. It really sets it off!). When i look at this 6 1/2 X 14 chrome hardware snare, it makes me want to buy an entire Purple Heartwood kit. Will have to save up for that. My sales rep, Devin Cunningham, is The Best! He always gives me great advice and gets me what I am asking for (or explains in one case) why I might not need a particular item. Sweetwater is my GO TO website for musical equipment and advice. Don’t believe you can go wrong with the Purple Heartwood. This baby is stout and heavy. It weighs almost twice one of my other snare drums. It’s all in the wood, baby!
Worth Every Penny!
Out of the box I was blown away with the tonality of this purple heart snare. Honestly this is the best sounding snare I've ever played. It's one snare that can basically do it all. Before it arrived I was having some doubts that it will live up to some of my other personal favorites, but all of those doubts vanished the minute I started playing it. I mainly bought this snare for demo projects in my home studio as well as playing out live. It's a very beautiful piece of gear that I plan on enjoying for a long time. Awesome Snare
I have had this drum for about two months now and have found it to be pretty much exactly as Nick describes in the video. I special ordered mine because I wanted it with the black nickel hardware (totally worth the upgrade), but the one thing I was disappointed about was the tiny heart inlay. When I got my drum, it did not have the heart. I hit up Joe at DW because I had just been there visiting the day before my drum arrived. He informed me that they have had several inquiries about the heart, and it turns out that you have to specifically request it when ordering. It's a bummer, because it's a pretty neat feature, but not a big deal in the long run. Super happy with this drum.
