My new #1 snare... (and I own 20 snares)
Been playing my 6.5 x 14" purpleheart snare for about 3-weeks. I'm extremely impressed with the quality of this instrument. DW never disappoints on quality. NEVER! The strainer is smooth and light to the touch. Black nickel hardware is flawless. And this snare is absolutely gorgeous. Who doesn't appreciate glossy, purple wood with exposed grain?!?
The variety of tones this drum can produce is inspiring. Very wide tonal range, from cardboard box low, to brass horns high. It's a pretty heavy snare, which (I believe) is where its tonal complexity comes from. Lighter snares rarely seem to impress me with tuning / tone options. The DW 3 position butt plate is ingenious. I get 3 distinctly different snare sounds - each just 1 second apart. I can even switch positions in the middle of a song, then switch back again after a solo or bridge section. Try this on your gig and watch the guitar player struggle to figure-out how you changed snares while playing - HA!
This sincerely is a 5-star review. The only conceivable negative on this amazing drum is high price; but watch the DW factory tour videos on YouTube and you will immediately understand why their drums are pricey. It's because they are meticulously designed, engineered and constructed from the finest materials, by a collection of highly-skilled people who truly care. In my opinion, this drum easily lives-up to its price tag. If you can swing it - buy it. You won't be disappointed.
DW Purpleheart Snare
This was the first DW drum I have ever bought. It sounds amazing. It has great attack and a warm sound. If all of their drums are built as well as this (and I'm sure they are) I can't wait to get a kit.
DW Purpleheart snare
This snare sounds great. It has a nice attack, and a great tones. The one thing that gets me about this purchase was that when I've ordered DW hardware in the past, it came with a drum key, and this drum does not. So if that is my biggest complaint, it must not be all too bad.
