Unreal look and sound

By Michel Labarge from ORLANDO, FL on August 17, 2023

I have played Pearl and Tama kits. When I decided to make the jump to a DW Kit, I wanted a Collectors Series kit with a natural wood finish. I saw this one come up and grabbed it. It looks and sounds incredible. I also went with a rack system for the first time, should have done it years ago!

Beauty!

I purchased this drum kit after many years of playing my Yamaha turbo tour custom and a Sonor Birch custom, which I've played now for well over 20 years. Always thought of owning a DW and thought now is the time! I was not a fan of the smaller kick drum so I had a larger, 22"x 24" kick, custom made to replace it and returned the 20". So much better sounding and easily tuned. The shells themselves have the heft and warm sound that I've always associated with the DW line. Top notch craftsmanship here, as well as the products used to make these drums!!! And, I purchase a new Gibraltar rack system to bring it all together!
And the service from Sweetwater during and after the ordering process was second to none...thanks Adam!!!

Best sounding drums out there

By Sweetwater Customer on September 25, 2019

I have played all types of DW drums and all the time it has been a positive experience. A lot of sustain and projection. Best sounding drums out there.

I've wanted this kit for a long time

By Jerome Eadeh from Las Vegas on February 28, 2019 Music Background: Professional

I finally bought a DW, because of the reputation, the sound, the quality, the wood. BUT...
I don't need or want mufflers in my kick. The pillow is a must have on reso head due to it being a cheap product with no inner ring or muffler. The wood bass drum hoops seem thin. Is that just me?
DW prides itself in making a very exacting well built drum, but the counter hoops don't sit square with the shell. You can see and feel that the hoop hangs away from the shell on one side, where it is tight on the other. I hope this is due to the heads, but if the hoops or shells are out of round, I will be very upset.
Speaking of heads, they don't seem to be the crimp lock type. It looks simply like the head is held into a metal channel with a semi-clear glue or acrylic. I noticed that the heads feel like they want to pull out or stretch more in certain areas, which is causing a buzzing type of sound on the 12".
I don't understand why the lug castings need to have two large screws to hold each casting. These screws are bolted through the shell, and when looking at the inside of the 8" drum, it's hard to actually see a smooth wood surface. On every drum, there is 27 holes in the shell with metal running through them. How can you get resonance with that. Not to mention the gigantic paper sticker inside the shells, and in the kick, a velcro strip to hold the pillows. I thought the whole idea of a drum shell was for the tone and resonance.
The right angle legs on the floor tom are cool, but the rubber feet on that drum, and the spurs of the kick, are not very isolating. This needs redesign. The legs of the floor tom are HEAVY.
The kit doesn't come with a ball clamp for the ride toms, so I am forced to go with the DW tom stand. I feel that the ball in the clamp is under sized and should be made of a stronger larger synthetic ball. The drums are heavy with those thick steel hoops, so a better designed ball clamp needs to be developed.
The stainless steel fine threading of the lugs may be good for the snare drum for fine tuning, but on the toms, it's a nightmare when trying to change heads. There is a plastic grommet in the castings and the extremely long length of the lugs make it very difficult to finger tighten the toms, because you get a false resistance when it hits that grommet. And when the lugs do hit the plastic grommet, the resistance is not uniform from lug to lug and makes it that much more difficult to tune or change a head quickly.
The kick didn't have a pedal clamp protector, so that will need to be purchased, along with a new reso head. Batter head is nice, but doesn't need the pillow for that.

The finish is gorgeous, and I've wanted a Cherry kit for a while, at least until I heard the Hendrix maple kit at NAMM. So when this kit came out, I finally got the perfect materials and size of kick, 20" at a great price. Thanks Sweetwater.
Bottom line is that I am going to need to put a lot of work into this kit to make it right. New top heads and reso kick already on its way. I need cases now, and still trying to figure out how the hardware stands will actually work. The wood ply is well put together and the inside finish is really nice. Like all my other DW drums, the wood is great. I was just hoping that when spending this much money, I wouldn't need to do much to get things rolling, but I will work with it.
