Dynamic-triggered Envelope Filter Guitar/Bass Pedal with Sensitivity, Range, and Sweep-direction Controls

Quacky, quirky, and expressive as all get out, the DOD Envelope Filter 440 is one reissue pedal guitarists everywhere eagerly anticipated — and now it's back and better than ever. On its own, the DOD 440 pick-attack-activated slow filter sweeps give you a kind of funky auto wah effect, and it's a real beast when you couple it with overdrive. The Range control lets you dial in which frequencies the filter sweeps, so you can avoid muddiness or harshness. But it's the addition of a bipolar Voice switch that makes the reissued Envelope Filter 440 so cool, which allows you to select whether the rise or fall of the sweep gets emphasized. And whereas the Up setting gives you the classic 440 guitar effect, the bass players here at Sweetwater really dig the subterranean dive you get from the Down setting.

watch where you put in your chain

By Steve A. from Roanoke, VA
Music Background: Blues/Rock

Great pedal, especially for the price. At first I had a horrible time trying to control the volume. it was so load, that turning it on would blast the volume, turn it off and had to adjust everything up. Went back and forth with this several times. Then I moved it behind my Cry Baby and put my Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone behind it. Used the volume knob on the Philosopher's Tone to control the volume of the DOD. My suggestion is to put a compressor with a volume control, or some kind of volume control behind it. But truthfully, this is a great pedal. If you want a good envelope filter at a great price this is it.

Does the trick!

By Zack from Palm Beach Gardens, FL
Music Background: Pro Musician, Country/Blues/Rock/Funk

Even though this pedal is only two knobs and a switch, it does the trick. The sound is very natural and organic. Pairs great with overdrives and effects, just keep it at the beginning of your effects chain.

Everything you need

By John from Austin, TX
Music Background: 45 years jazz and contemporary Christian

Always appreciated the solid build quality and simplicity of DOD pedals back in the day. Now improved with true bypass and power supply connectivity. This produces great envelope filter effects with all the control you need.

A duck you can snuggle

By RD G. from Sacramento
Music Background: third decade multi-instrumentalist

I have no hands-on experience with the original, vintage 440's. What I can say, is this particular 440 blows the shrill, whompy bite of DOD's FX25 variants away with sheer depth, slink and soul, and it slays the BOSS AW's.

Literally everything I've ever wanted out of an envelope filter. No more, no less.

A Pedalboard Must

By J from VA

Just two fat knobs and a directional switch but endless fun. I have this placed before a Boss CS-3 and an MXR Bass Octave Deluxe and my 4-string immediately enters wild synthesizer territory.

DOD envelope filter 440. Sounds great, simple to use. Reliable. What more could you want?
Works well with guitar and bass. 5 stars.

Great pedal!

By Sweetwater Customer from Cleveland
Music Background: Full time player.

Amongst many other things, I play periodically with a Dead cover band. You gotta have an envelope filter. You just do. Got my first one in the 90's. A DOD FX25B. Then I had Q-Trons, Mutrons, MXR's, and just about everything else out there. This little guy takes the prize. I bought this on a whim because it was on sale for almost half off. I scored. This box will do the Jerry thing in spades. It's also extremely touch sensitive, which allows me to use my left hand to drive it differently for the high and low strings, or for different song passages. EF effects are all dynamic to a degree but this one seems more picking hand controllable than the others I've had for sure. Extra points for it being a) so small, and b) so dead simple to operate that anyone will be able to get great sounds out of it without needing an engineering degree.

$? No brainer. Best money I've spent on a pedal in a LONG time.

wowowawawa.......

By Raymond M. from Texas
Music Background: Composer, recording artist, engineer, guitar/bass

Better than any of the envelope filters I have ever used. I like it as much as my Mutron III, but this one is quieter and I like the dynamic triggering much more than the Boss auto-wah.

Like meeting a new friend.

By Phil from Portland, Or

I'm tempted to up grade the score to five whole stars, but it's still new for me. The objective is to give my sound a slightly more complex character. So far the reverse setting with the range at about 3:o'clock is getting the job done.

Does exactly what you think it would do

By Kevin C. from IN

Having never owned an original 440, but having heard one probably hundreds of times, I was expecting great things from this box.

For the most part, it lives up to its expectations. It has that classic "bhwaaahw" sound. Plus, look at that box. I love the classic DOD look, but with all the modern conveniences of true bypass and 9V operation.

The only gripe I really have is that it seems to die out on the higher notes. If I do dial it so that the high notes do trigger the envelope all the way, then the lower notes keep the envelope open for too long. So, I do a compromise, somewhere in the middle.
