Tech 21 DI-2112 Geddy Lee Signature SansAmp Preamp Reviews

Bass Preamp Pedal with Dual Analog SansAmp Circuits, Saturation, and Semi-parametric 2-band EQ with Mid-Shift

Starting with Rush’s 1996 Test for Echo tour, Geddy Lee has eschewed the traditional bass amplifier backline in favor of industrial chicken roasters, washing machines, and the like. To streamline his setup, Geddy partnered with Tech 21 to design a Signature SansAmp rack unit, the GED-2112. This challenging project involved distilling a rackload of gear into a single rackspace. Now Sweetwater is excited to present the Tech 21 Geddy Lee DI-2112 — which incorporates GED-2112 technology into a rugged bass preamp pedal. Two internal preamps allow you to dial in two distinct tones. Its Drive preamp section covers a wide sonic range, while the Deep preamp section delivers boosted low end for fat, round tone, with saturation that ranges from clean to tube-like grit and compression. And with semi-parametric 2-band EQ with Mid-Shift based on Geddy’s exact specifications, there’s a world of tone to explore with the Tech 21 Geddy Lee Signature SansAmp.

Awesome Pre-Amp

By Ragnar from USA on April 9, 2024

This pedal is excellent! I'm plugging my Fender P bass (which has passive pick-ups) into it to get a boost in tone and this bad boy delivers big-time!
It's exactly what I wanted. I turn the volume on my bass all the way up and turn the tone-pot all the way in the other direction and then just use the SansAmp pedal for everything from there.
Dialed in a killer tone for walking bass lines on upbeat blues/jazz like "Unit 7" for example.
You can do a lot more, too, I'm sure; just need to keep changing the settings.
The bottom line is that this pedal brings my P bass up to speed with my other active-pickup basses. Totally slammin' tones ready to be dialed-in!
Let me also mention that the option to run it with two 9v batteries is great. I went to a jam last week and just had to plug into the bass rig on stage and let it rip! My settings are there and ready; leave the stage amp levels in the middle. And no fooling around with "oh, I gotta plug in my power source." You just get on stage and go! And go hard because those 18 volts are pumping out a ton of tone.

Tech 21 DI-2112

By Sweetwater Customer on August 2, 2023

This Bass Guitar preamp provides a boost to the output signal from your guitar and adds a lot of tone control which is much needed on guitars with passive pickups. Price is a bit high compared to other similar products, but it does the job well.

Exquisite!

I previously owned the GED-2112 rack unit , and I loved it! However when I reworked my home studio it became awkward to reach and tweak ( 6' away from my position). So I sold it and purchased the DI-2112 the more accommodating of the two. I find myself right at home with all functionality of the DI-2112, it has less routing options than GED-2112 but I never used all of the outputs anyway so no great loss. I'm very pleased with tones it offers (The exact same sound as the rack version). I feel sure anyone will be pleased with it's diminutive footprint. I run mine into the effects return on my Mesa TT-800's subway channel, which allows my me via the Boogie foot-switch to go from Boogie to the beloved GED DI-2112, making it a very versatile rig with a fender 2x8 on top of a Mesa Subway 1x15. Purely Exquisite Tone!

Last but not least, Sweetwater is and always will be #1. Thanks you Sweetwater!!!!!!

I like it!

Its more versatile than I thought it would be. And the tight feature is awesome! The little hidden button to blend channels is pretty awesome too. I prefer this unit over the rack unit

Magical Device!

By Billy Colburn from Foley, AL on October 30, 2021 Music Background: Stage. Studio. Creating. Writing.

All I can say is Wow. Why have I not bought this until now? After some 50 years of playing the bass guitar, this is by far the best sound I have ever had. Paired this with my new ESP B204SM fretless bass it is magical. Built to last for a long time and the two-channel output is undeniably the source of all its magic. Going straight into my Interface and DAW, this is not just a sound enhancement, it is a complete system for the studio. Connect to a pair of powered cabs or desired amps (one with a 15 or 18 and the other with 10's or 12's) and you are set for any live setting. Don't sleep on this box. Thanks to Aric for his continued support in every purchase I make through him. He gets it. And I appreciate it.

Excellent

Very flexible solution to recording bass D.I. Easy to dial in good tones, equalization is very responsive. Loving the sounds I am getting.

Excellent Product

Very well executed device. Sounds beautiful without even running it through an amp; I run each channel through a separate 12" powered cabinet and it sounds amazing.

Great Geddy Tone in a Box

By Mike from Wisconsin on February 23, 2021

This is great easy way to get that twin amp sound of Geddy Lee or Chris Squire without needing multiple amps. I was able to dial in a great tone with a Rick 4003S and sent a clip to my two bassist friends who replied "you nailed it!" and "I want one!". It gives you the full solid round bottom end and the high end with as much drive, growl or fret rattle that you want. I use it for recording and run each channel to a separate track to EQ and process during mix down. The bass sits very well in the mix and has has the low end power with the articulation of the high end. Watch the demo videos for the details and sound samples.

Finally!!

By Sweetwater Customer from Manchester, MO on August 12, 2020

I used to use the RPM rackmount, and did not want to switch to the rack 2112 because I wanted to slim things down. Now with this box, I have everything the original did, in a small box that can sit on top of a combo and also put a signal out to the house mix. Perfect. Also, if you do not want to have two outputs, you can switch it to have them combined if you just want to use it with a standard bass amp. you will not be missing a thing. This box has a ton under the hood and not only does it give the exact "Geddy" tone, but you can dial in just about anything you can think up. Probably their best device ever. Thank you, Tech 21 and Nick Beach at Sweetwater!

Great and versatile DI pedal

By Steven on August 3, 2020 Music Background: Intermediate bass player

This pedal is all around fantastic. It's actually extremely sensitive and versatile and can get you tons of different sounds. It's more convenient than a rack mount and I love the addition of the Tight switch from the YYZ pedal. The only minor inconvenience is that if you don't have two amps or a mixer, then you have to open it up and activate a switch to blend the two channels, but this does not degrade the sound in the least. This is my number one preamp now!

Finally my dream is reality!!!!

Exactly what I need on the road!

This is a godsend! I have to travel light and just cannot justify cramming my rack in my bag.....the DI-2112 is gonna be with me for every YYNOT show all over the country!

Great preamp pedal

By Mark on April 3, 2022 Music Background: Bass player of 35+ years

So I was looking for a new dual channel preamp for recording in my home studio. I like to record 2 tracks simultaneously with different tones. After about 45 you tube videos I settled on this one. It was a little glitchy right out of the box with some popping noises and then after 2 days went full glitch. I contacted customer support and they had no problem sending a new one with a prepaid return label. The new one is working great! Sweetwater is awesome and so is this preamp!

Great preamp

By John from Baltimore, Maryland on November 12, 2020

I picked this up a couple weeks ago and since tried different basses through it and different settings. With my 4003 Ric and Fender jazz it nails the grindy Getty tone. Run it into the return of the effects loop to hear just the preamp, absolutely fantastic. The manual also has several suggested settings, which cover different types of sounds. The Les Claypool sound nails it, as I'm also a big Primus fan. Only aggravation about it is the button to blend the 2 outputs into 1 is internal of the unit. You can access it through the battery compartment without taking the unit apart but don't understand why they couldn't just add a button from the top of the unit. Minor gripe but if the button is there then make it easier to use. The unit is also smaller than I expected, again nice to just throw in a bag real quick. If you're looking for a versatile preamp/DI then jump on this one. Extremely smooth to aggressive drive to everything in-between.

Great DI - Fantastic Tone

By Scott Winn from Decatur, GA on August 3, 2020

I looked at the YYZ pedal and the GED2112 rack mount unit and both looked tempting, but didn't really work for my setup. Then the DI-2112 came along...

I love this box. This takes care of so much in one pedal board friendly unit and the tones are amazing. I love having a separate bottom end feed (deep) to put under a punchier drive sound. It fills out the overall sound beautifully. The "tight" button adds compression, but I'd be inclined to stick with a separate compression pedal for more control. The range of tones you can get, once you get to know the controls, is pretty varied. I play a mix of country to alt rock and can find tones for both ends of that spectrum in this unit.

I have two very small critical notes. The knobs are gloss black and the pointed indicators on each knob are hard to see, particularly under dim lighting. I took a silver paint marker and put a line on the indicator which made it much easier to see where each knob is pointing at a glance. The second note is that the deep and drive channels are on separate outputs. This is great when you have a good sound guy at the board to mix them, but in a lot of bars it's just me going straight to my amp so two outputs would require an additional mix unit. I reached out to Tech 21 and they provided me the info on how to set the DI up to mix the deep and drive internally in the unit so that they send both channels through a single output. It's not hard to do, but you'd never find how to do that without reaching out to them.

Both my Sweetwater rep (Thanks Paul!) and the Tech 21 rep were extremely helpful in getting the box to me and getting it setup to work with my rig. I'd have no hesitation recommending this DI to just about any bass player.

Great for Recording!

By Bruce from Wheat Ridge, CO on February 22, 2022 Music Background: Recording Hobbyist & Multi-Instrument Performing Veteran

I was already fairly familiar with this unit before I purchased it, by using a friend's stomp-box/YYZ version. This DI version sounds exactly as expected, and is a little more flexible than the YYZ. I find it super-helpful when recording, for helping the bass stand out in my (often) very crowded mixes. It's as close to having "Geddy in a box" as you can get, without having to worry about being arrested.

:-)

No footswitch?

By Tony Shoffner from Mukilteo, WA on January 22, 2024

Love the performance of this "pedal" and the sound I can get from it.

But...it's not a pedal. There is no switch. So if I want to change from this pedal to a cleaner sound, I have to completely change the set up. I don't think Geddy had final eyes on this one. I much prefer the YYZ pedal.

Unimpressed
