Boss DD-8 Digital Delay Pedal Reviews

Delay Guitar Pedal with 11 Delay Modes, Carryover Switch, and E. Level, Feedback, and Time Controls

Ever since BOSS released the DM-1 Delay Machine in 1978, the BOSS name has been synonymous with great-sounding delay pedals. The DD-8 is the brand's most powerful one yet. This compact delay stompbox boasts up to 10 seconds of delay and 11 versatile delay modes that range from crystal clear repeats to glitchy and modulated echoes. The BOSS DD-8 is ideal for practice, soundchecks, and on-the-fly backing tracks, courtesy of its 40-second looper. And synchronizing your repeats to a song is a breeze, thanks to tap tempo. You also get a Carryover switch, which enables delay trails to continue after the effect is bypassed. The DD-8 is teeming with flexible stereo I/O, while three selectable output modes achieve a wide range of effects. The BOSS DD-8 includes external footswitch jacks for on-demand tap tempo, extended looper control, and a captivating Twist effect.

Completely awesome.

By Peter B. from USA
Music Background: Composer, musician, studio recording artist, photographer, videographer.

This is a must have for guitar effects. Sounds like a studio rack mount digital delay unit. Easy to operate. Sturdy construction. What else can I say? How about worth every penny!

Almost perfect.

By Phil from Columbia City, IN

It has a ton of features and ability!

I wish it had 2290 delay, and easier options to change subdivisions.

I understand the latter as Boss seems to shy away from dip switches and toggles for what I assume is for durability.

Amazing delay for the size.

Best compact digital delay

By VICTOR A.

As awaited from an industry standard like Boss I can assure that the DD-8 is the best sounding digital delay on it´s price point, with it's ten delay types and it's included 38sec looper you can have it all. My favorite one is the analog delay cus' eventhough it is a digital pedal it does the job very well. Persnally I do recommend to buy it with a Boss FS-7 Footswitch

Far-out!

By Sweetwater Customer

This pedal has so many sonic possibilities. I particularly like the feedback loop and the dotted eighth note delay rhythm. Easy to use and doesn't take up the kind of space that the larger pedals, like the early Pog,require. Good deal for the money.

Extremely versatile

By Troy M. from Fort Wayne
Music Background: Still learning, always learning

I bought this as an upgrade from a DD-7. I wanted the extra modes. The tape and warm modes were something that was exclusive to this model. The modes named the same (analog for example) do sound different between the 2 of them. I can't say one is better than the other, just different. A must have for any pedal board.

This pedal does A LOT!

By Ronald P. from FINLEYVILLE, PA

Take your time and read the manual for this pedal because it does a lot of different stuff and depending on what mode you're in thr knobs may do something different. So far my favorite modes are: standard, tape, shimmer and glitch. Every mode on this pedal is executed well and will not disappoint, even the looper is great for some short practice loops! I may get n expression pedal soon so I can adjust some settings on the fly. I'd recommend this pedal to anyone looking for a delay that does lots of different delays expertly!

You really can't go wrong with Boss pedals. They are built to last and they are user friendly and extremely versatile. Can't say enough good things and shout out to my Sweetwater rep Timothy for always making sure I'm satisfied with my gear purchases!

The best compact digital delay pedal on the market

By Sweetwater Customer

I used to have a DD-7, and since I sold it, I've always regretted it. So years later I decided to get the DD-8, the new version. And wow... what an incredible pedal. I loved my DD-7, but this is like an upgraded version of that.

The digital repeats are crisp. The tape repeats are warm and vintage sounding. The emulated analog is fun. The backwards delay is trippy, and really cool when you turn the effects level all the way up it silences the dry signal. My absolute favorite thing about this pedal has always been the looper. This makes it feel like I'm getting two pedals in one. You can even say four pedals in one if you use the modulated delay for its chorus effect or the reverb+delay effect for just the reverb by turning the feedback all the way to zero.

It truly is a swiss army knife pedal. Not only do you get all the effects, but it's got a stereo out and an input for an external tap tempo/expression pedal. For on the fly sound tweaking, this pedal rocks.

Flexible and great sound

By Sweetwater Customer

I wanted a delay that could do a better reverb setting and saw this one. So far it's been really good doing both jobs as a delay/reverb.

Tons of settings that all sound really good and I am excited to play with this one. I have or had other popular delay pedals and this one is quickly becoming my favorite.

It’s a Boss pedal.

By John E. from Fuquay-Varina, NC
Music Background: Guitar player and gear nerd for 30 years

Boss has earned its industry reputation, and for good reason. Is every pedal a home run? No, no company has a perfect batting average - but Boss comes really close. Always solid, always reliable. And generally speaking, there are few unusable sounds to be found in any of their tank-like stompboxes. This latest addition to the Digital Delay series is NO exception. It does absolutely everything you'd expect, with the Boss quality you'd expect. Every mode has a wide usable range, there are no quirky behaviors to be wary of, and the options they've packed into the familiar Boss compact form factor are excellent. If you are looking for a single, affordable delay to cover a lot of bases, you'd be hard pressed to find a better option. And if you're considering the DD-8, just pull the trigger. Sweetwater's customer service leaves nothing to be desired from my experience, and their return policy and warranty coverage make this a true no-brainer. As always, my man Jacob Stutzman is on top of his game, and I'd recommend him to anyone. The Sweetwater difference keeps me coming back.

Powerful machine

By Sweetwater Customer

Crystal clear repeats, and many other cool sounds on tap. Easy to get a great sound. I love that you can use tap tempo on every setting, unlike previous iterations of the DD pedal. Buy with confidence.

By Goderaj from Selinsgrove, PA

This pedal is excellent! Many options to create many different delays. It works flawlessly! Not a single complaint. I have another delay pedal that is great also, but this one has so many more options to craft nearly any delay In looking for! Absolutely love it and Sweetwater is the best! Their customer service is top notch! CSR Matt is THE BEST! If only all business' practiced Sweetwater's service ethics.

The Only Delay Stomp You Need

By Sterno from Little Rock
Music Background: Bassist for decades

It only took a week for this to become my favorite pedal. In fact, other than an SP compressor, the DD-8 is now my only effects pedal. I'm doing some experimental ambient music and this BOSS sounds amazing with guitar, bass, even my Cobalt 5S synth. It's BOSS so you know it's heavy duty. It's amazing the number of effects crammed into this little box. Buy it! You'll be mesmerized. Thanks Jeremiah and Sweetwater.

Versital effect pedal, easy to use

Works great on bass as well

By Sweetwater Customer

I find this pedal has a great sound and actually sold my avalanche run after I started using it although I do miss the separate reverb.
I hardly have any low -end loss and the repeats actually have a fatness to them that are pretty much a perfect copy of the tone I put in.

The two negative reviews on this pedal should not actually be allowed to be on here one of them gives this pedal a bad review because the guy had the boss DD7 and was unhappy so he figured this one would suck too even though he never actually used it .
The other claimed that in order to use the subdivision tap tempo you had to unplug the pedal hold down the foot switch in and plug it in again which would be horrible for live shows but all you have to do is hold the foot switch down for three seconds while it's turned on and it goes into tap tempo mode.

Seriously people, do your research before writing a negative review because of your own failing to use it properly.

Great delay with the right features

By Suke from New York, NY
Music Background: Professional for 25+years

I was looking for a single pedal format, with tap tempo and multiple delays, and bonus for stereo I/O. I used to use the Flashback (I have v1 and v2) but they kept crapping out onstage and I couldn't trust them (same w EHX). I had overlooked the BOSS stuff for years but I know the DD series is a industry workhorse. I had been using the Carbon copy but it was only a one trick delay w no tap. The DD8 was the answer and more. It ticked all of my boxes, I use an MXR TAP with it and it rocks. BONUS!! I didn't know that the on/off light flashes to your tempo setting. When off the light blinks between RED and BLACK/off and when the pedal is ON it blinks between RED and GREEN. That is so awesome and I can't believe that feature isn't more hyped. It has a lot of types of delays and I'm really enjoying the new WARM delay sound, like a perfect balance of DIGITAL and ANALOG And the price was right, great pedal.

I'm a drummer making an experimental album and this was the first necessity on my list. There is tons of options and sounds that are just awesome. Ambience, echo & shimmer are all located in this pedal. Very happy with it and strongly recommend it for all musicians beginners and pros.

The best multi delay in a small box, unlike the memory man box ( I love the memory man pedal ).

By Elliott G. from California
Music Background: Playing guitar for over 30 years

This delay pedal has more delays and better sounding delays then most I've played on. I bought the TC flashback 2 and I love that one too but the boss delay sounds better, the flashback 2 sounds like the delays are repeating in wave almost like a phaser. You can't go wrong with the DD-8 if I were to give advice about multiple delay pedals I would suggest the DD-8.

Very Nice. Great Tones of Delay, Diverse

By Bobby B. from Houston, TX

I love Boss. When I was in my 20s, I would throw my Boss pedals down from a backpack onto the stage, sprinkling them down from 4 feet to the hard floor. None of those pedals broke, ever. Boss is my go to stompbox maker, and for good reason. Fads come and go, but Boss stands the test of time. Most of my pedals are Boss and I have a lot. I've also had boutique pedals and sold them. I have a Boss DD-20 delay that I've owned for the last 15 years and still use it every day. I had the DD-500 but something wasn't gelling with me on that one - the delays were too clean, in a jazzy or new age way. I have another manufacturer's quirky analog delay that was quite an embarrassment last weekend at a professional gig. It sounds great but it's oh so fragile, notifying the entire crowd every time I toggle it on. And sometimes, it won't start up, so I have to hit it on the ground a few times. That's why I bought the DD-8. I had been reviewing the gamut of delays, but the only one I know for sure that I will be content with if I buy it is a Boss stompbox delay. It's the right size for my professional gigs. Little did I know that this one is really awesome! I had the DD-2 as well, when I was younger. This DD-8 has perfect repeating tones. It sounds like the sampling rate must be much better than my DD-20, which was released a while back. The DD-20 has a lot of fine tuning control and a little bit of digital grit. It's got a lot of soul, but it's not the clearest delay out there. And the DD-500 seems too clear. The DD-8 leans closer to clear, but Boss rolls off the high end on the Analog, Tape and Warm modes, and they throw a little blur in or a little chorusy warble when the emulation calls for it, keeping it real. I was kind of surprised that there wasn't a tone control available, but the tone of the delays sounds so good that you don't need it. The analog seems perfect to me. I really feel like the tones on this one set it apart from its predecessors. i know that is a bold statement and there are a lot of DD-2 and DD-3 lovers out there. I am a tone freak, though, and this delay sounds great to me. I have it in ping pong mode, and run it into a Marshall 2525c and a Fender Blues JR IV. You won't regret the purchase. 5-year manufacturer's warranty too! Anyone else doing this? Nope.

DD3 + 5(stars) = DD8

By GP from Chicago

I have the Boss DD3 and it sounds great.
The DD8 is definitely a step ahead: you can still have all the features and sounds of DD3 but with a much wider range of possibilities.
Sound move from organic analog to sophisticated ambience harmonics.
Simple and intuitive to use.
Recommended.

Can't set subdivisions on the fly?

By Casey C. from Arkansas

This is a great sounding delay, but what the heck Boss??? To change from let's say a quarter note delay to dotted eighth, you have to unplug the input, hold the pedal down after selecting a hidden mode and then power it back up! Who's going to do that in the middle of a set with a pedal velcro'd to a pedalboard???

Always choose Boss first

By Sweetwater Customer

It's the usual Boss quality. Dependable. The short loop effect doesn't do much for me. I prefer the separate looper. The various style delays and ease of setting the length of delay is adding variation to my style.

it’s predecessor was a piece of plunder so, Nah,

By Alex from Tenn
Music Background: 40 years plus playing rock & hard rock

In 1986 I bought a Boss DD-2 DD-3 and i loved it. Matter of fact it's still working!! They were built to last.

However I am reviewing the DD-7 the irritating predecessor to the DD-8. My DD-7 Was bought 4 years ago and spent 2 years in a closet. it's been used MAYBE 10 Times.

This last week i pulled it out hooked it up and guess what? Nothing but noise on every setting. not one single function works. I called my guitar techs, I called the largest music store in town, I called Sweetwater tech support and ...

my best options were to pay $ evaluation fee, shipping to Boss in Calif Boss repair min $ plus parts and labor.

in short I could probably pay $ plus more than i paid for it new… to get it fixed maybe more than that. Boss i used to love ya, but this don't get it.

over and out bubs.

A lot of stuff for a normal size boss pedal

By Hutdog from Atlantic Highlands NJ

I've been using my boss space echo for long delay/repeats for many years.
Decided to try the dd8 With a tap tempo switch.
It does what I need. Has a trails switch on back.
I like that the analog setting has more milliseconds than usual analog delays.
Compared to the space echo, the dd8 saves space and seems to be half the weight.
Current setup is DD8 for long delays/trails setting and I use the DM2W for short slap.
They the only two boss pedals I use.
