Martin DC-X2E Rosewood Dreadnought Acoustic-electric Guitar - Natural Reviews

6-string Acoustic-electric Guitar with Spruce Top, HPL (Rosewood Pattern) Back and Sides, and Hardwood Neck and Fingerboard - Natural

The latest from Martin's X Series is a value-packed stage performer chock full of no-nonsense player advantages. The DC-X2ERW starts with a hand-rubbed solid spruce top — one of Martin's most revered acoustic instrument tops — joined to back and sides of climate-proof HPL ("high-pressure laminate") in a gorgeous rosewood print. Underneath, Scalloped X bracing with 1/4" Tone Bars maximizes bass response throughout the robust D-14 cutaway dreadnought body. And discrete electronics from Fishman allow you to strap on and plug in anywhere you perform out, all without detracting from the raw beauty of your instrument. Other hallmarks of the DC-X2ERW include a slim, comfort-enhancing Performing Artist neck profile with High Performance Taper and a tone-enhancing compensated TUSQ saddle and corian nut. Don't let the entry price or nebulous woods deter you — the Martin DC-X2ERW is another fine contender from the X Series, and one that acoustic players at Sweetwater are proud to take on our fly dates and acoustic outings.

Checked All My Boxes

By Phil from San Luis Obispo, CA on April 25, 2021 Music Background: Over 50 years pickin' and grinnin'.

I was looking for something that can stand up to outdoor environments and wanted to experiment with Martin HPL series instruments. I was skeptical about applying the 'Martin' name to a guitar built in Mexico with back and sides formed with the high pressure laminate material. First, the quality of the build is outstanding in this price range. Second, I have never played a finer acoustic neck like this Performing Artist profile and High Performance Taper. I am spoiled for life with this neck configuration. I won't buy another guitar without it. Having owned four previous Martins, they would still be in my collection today if they'd had this neck. Then comes the most critical factor: tone. The solid spruce top is a very important factor on the HPL guitars. The back and sides give this instrument a somewhat more mellow tonality than a solid wood counterpart. I played four guitars before settling on this one with the cutaway. The sound was slightly brighter than the other three, which I prefer. Once home I switched out the strings with Elixir light nanowebs and it really came to life acoustically. Of course when it's plugged in you can tailor the sound to your personal liking. I've narrowed down my acoustic collection to four guitars now and this is the one that I pick up daily for practice and jamming. This is truly a unique instrument. The full range of tone is not quite comparable to a solid body dreadnought, but fits beautifully in a brand new category for acoustic guitars. No disappointments for me, and again, the neck comfort level is exceptional. In my opinion, a great beginner and/or stout travel guitar.

Swing and a Miss

By Rob Svalina on June 21, 2023

This is a nice guitar. It plays well, it has good intonation in the upper frets, and the electronics sound good through a PA. It has an okay tone unplugged. I bought it to upgrade from my $ Fender acoustic/electric. It was not an upgrade. It was as good, but twice the price. I wanted to make a neck adjustment but you can't......no truss rod. I think it was a mistake for Martin to put their name on this series of guitars, it cheapens the brand. Don't expect this guitar to be a Martin, especially unplugged. No comparison to my D-15. I sent it back. Sweetwater is awesome to deal with, the return was no problem. I was going to try a Martin Road Series which is a step up from the X-series, but the electronics were the same as the X-series. I now have a Breedlove on order, bought one a couple years ago for a family member and fell in love with it, excited to see how the electronics sound. Long story short, my opinion is that the X-series would be a great guitar at a $ price.
