Martin 12 string let it ring!

By Randy P. from Dover, NH

The guitar sounds great. This 12 string plays easily. Neck is very comfortable. Body edges are rounded for comfort. Tuning is solid.

I was sceptical of the HPL back and sides. They do look artificial on close inspection. The construction seems strong. We will see if it ages well.

The finish is fairly rustic. If you are looking for a shiny object this is not the guitar.

If you want a very playable Martin 12 string for not a lot of money then this is a very good entry level 12 string.

Beautiful Guitar

By Jimmy H. from NH

Very impressed with the workmanship of the Martin X-Series line. The DC-X2CE twelve string is the third I've purchased in the X-Series category. They're assembled perfectly and the sound is surprisingly good; especially the 12-String as it has a solid top and what looks to be a mahogany neck, or at least something in that family of wood. My only grip is the playability. The action on the low "E" string arrived at a very high .140" at the 12th fret making it difficult to fret and throws out the intonation as you get into the higher areas of the fretboard. The other two X-Series guitars I bought were at a local music store and both of those had the same condition. I was a bit disappointed that Sweetwater didn't ship without modifying the action to something more playable as their 55-point check includes action height in the playability section of their checklist. Fortunately, I've had enough practice shaving saddles from the other two guitars and I'll get around to adjusting this one in a couple of days. Kudos to Norb Berninger who been my contact at Sweetwater for many years. He's always been more than accommodating and I appreciate having him as my direct contact there. So… great guitar, just expect to have to get the playability in check when it arrives.

A good, solid instrument

By Ethan from New Smyrna Beach, FL
Music Background: Lifelong semi-pro guitarist, singer, DAWs, bass

This guitar has a nice boomy, jangly, twangy sound. I didn't keep it because the neck shoulders are uncomfortable for my not big hand, and the neck is also quite heavy, so you either need to use a strap or find a way to keep the neck up without a strap. I didn't comparison shop 12-strings, so I don't know what else is out there at this price point, but having bought and sold guitars for 50+ years, this seems like a fair deal to me.
I wound up spending quite a bit more money on the Taylor 254ce. At first I didn't like the sound of the Taylor compared to the Martin, because it's more refined, not as raw, and, with the smaller body, not as much low end. However, I mostly play it online, and when it's plugged in, with a good condensor mic at the 12th fret, it's got plenty of low end, and just enough jangle to satisfy me. (The electronics on the Taylor, however, are AWFUL. I own four other Taylor guitars, and they all sound killer plugged in. This sounds like the early, plastic sounding piezo pickups, with none of the advances of the last thirty years.)
To my ear, this Martin has the Classic 12-string sound: Big, lively and gnarly. I love it! But it wasn't quite right for me as far as playability. Still, I think it deserves 5 stars.

Incredible instrument. Exceeded my already very high expectations!

By Mitch from Harleysville PA
Music Background: Musician (primarily for myself these days)

Beautiful beautiful Martin instrument. At a price I felt I could treat myself. I have a Martin 6 string made similarly which I love. Was so happy when they added a 12 string to the line. Incredible instrument. Full full sound. Everything sounds amazing. Very cool there are no limitations to what I could play on it. I thought a few songs would be 12 string songs. But really everything I play sounds good. It's like two guitars playing together. Duh! Ordering with sweetwater a pleasure. Packaging was great. Totally protected the instrument. Also love given the 12 strings that it remains in tune. Though the onboard tuning is perfect. I've tuned it once since purchase and that was a minor tuning. I was confused how to turn on the turner. Duh! I wrote back and received a clear answer the next business day. I do have a complaint. I don't have enough time to play it as much as I want.
Seriously thanks for a great transaction and a great guitar (I have WANTED a 12 string for decades).
