Guild D-240E Acoustic-Electric Guitar - Natural Reviews
Guild's iconic arched back makes its return in the Westerly D-240E dreadnought acoustic-electric. The purpose of this trademark feature is twofold: principally, it reduces weight and increases live projection. But it also pays tribute to some of Guild's popular models, such as the D-25 and F-30. The result is a great-playing, easy-traveling guitar with Guild's unmistakable look. The Westerly D-240E harks back to Guild's golden-era flat tops with some exciting vintage specs, including a body made from premium woods, a classic Guild C-shaped neck, and a retro red tortoiseshell pickguard. The D-240E includes the AP-1 pickup for a clean sound that plugs straight into a PA.

Great sound, great price
Overall, this is a great sounding guitar for a decent price.
Here are some things I like about it:
- lightweight
- looks nice-I love the wood finish.
- Has a balanced sound-great bass tone
- Already has a pickup-sounds true to
the sound of the guitar
- Holds tune well
Long time dream
I started playing at an advanced age. The man who got me started played and swore by his Guild.
Since then , 43 yrs ago. I have wanted a Guild. Finally SweetWater has offered one in my price range
I a pleasantly surprised at the quality of this instrument. It is light and easy to handle. The action is just right right out of the box.the sound is great. I can hear the full range full bodied sound.
I am very happy
Great bang-for-your-buck acoustic
I'm impressed with the tone and feel of this guitar, esp for the price!
Great guitar
This is the best acoustic guitar I have owned so far. Great quality and great sound. In a very reasonable price!
Great guitar
The best acoustic guitar I bought so far. Great quality and great sound, in a very reasonable price!
Winner!
First off, hats off to Sweetwater Sales Engineer Josh Hart and the Guitar group. The after sale attention detail to a comment by me in the order note about needing a low action guitar due to physical issues of my fretting hand yielded a winner.
In addition to the action being effortless, the intonation is spot on, and the tone is great!
This guitar was purchased because my D-35NT after 52 years of had work needs a trip to the luthier for saddle replacement, re-fretting, new nut and saddle and a good setup. I couldn't be without a Guild Dreadnought, after comparing the different models I felt the D-240E filled the bill as far as size and budget.
The feel and sound of this guitar is great, and although this is the first guitar I have purchased from Sweetwater, it won't be the last.
PS if you have never bought a guitar from Sweetwater you will be amazed at how they are pack for shipping
Best sub $ dreadnought you can buy, period.
I have 2 Taylors, including a dreadnought I paid twice as much for, and this Guild gives it honest competition. It has good pickups and has great attention to the details and finish unheard of at this price. It looks and feels like a much more expensive guitar. The fret ends are perfectly beveled, so no snags. It uses light gauge strings, (most dreadnoughts use medium gauge) and is easy on the finger tips while delivering a good deep bass with distinct brassy highs. The setup and truss rod was good out of the box. Throw a set of Elixer Nanoweb Phosphor bronze on it and you have a great finger picking or strumming guitar, and you won't "outgrow" it in 6 months and want to replace it.
Love this thing
I chose this guitar because I was really impressed with the features for the price point (real bone nut, solid woods) and it does not disappoint. Feels great, sounds great, and has a nice classic look right down to the little details. This was my first time ordering from Sweetwater and that was great, too. I couldn't believe how fast it shipped.
Fantastic Guitar
I have been playing for over fifteen years and have recently found myself in need of a new guitar. This guild has checked all of my boxes by having excellent build quality, a rich yet cheerful tone, is drop dead gorgeous, and yet is still vastly more affordable than my marriage.
- Would highly recommend
Just what I needed, got me playing again
I've been strictly an electric player my entire life. Over the last 20 years, I've sort of gotten to where I only pick up the axe every now and then and strum for a little bit, but I still like having my guitars around.
Recently, my Epiphone Les Paul took a fall and the headstock broke clean off. This gave me an excuse to get a new guitar. After researching what my next guitar would be, I decided I'd like an acoustic. All I've ever owned was the Yamaha Fg-335s. Cheap and durable and great for breaking out at a campfire or party, but difficult for my arthritis.
I went to guitar center and played every acoustic under my allowed budge of $600. After strumming Fenders, Epiphone, washburn, D'angelico, etc, I decided I liked the feel and tone of this D-240 the best.
I came home and ordered the guitar from sweetwater and couldn't have been happier with my decision. I haven't played guitar this much since I was a teenager. I've started revisiting the fundamentals and I am finding myself practicing more than a couple hours a day. I simply can not put this guitar down. I am finding my old chops again and tapping back into my creativity i thought disappeared when I became a 9-5 working "adult"
Tone is subjective, but aside from playability, this guitar has the exact tone i want from an acoustic. Very boisterous, resonating tone. great harmonics. With a real bone nut and bone bridge and fishman electronics, I think this is a bargain for the price. No buyer's remorse on this purchase at all.
First Guitar
I'm new to playing and asked a friend to help me choose something affordable that has a good tone and stays in tune. The Guild OM 240-E checks all the boxes. It is truly lovely with an excellent sound. There were other options but I gravitated toward this instrument and I'm so pleased with it as I try to learn to play. I didn't try it out because there is a not a Sweetwater near me and no shops close to me had a Guild, but I watched videos online of the pieces my friends recommended and knew pretty much immediately that this was the one. Also worth noting: Sweetwater customer service is tops. So glad I went with this guitar and this shop for the best possible experience.
LOVE IT
I bought this guitar 2 days ago and I am in love with it. The sound is unmatched by any guitar I've ever played. Definitely worth getting.
Balanced tones up and down the neck. Love it!
Sweetwater consistently comes through with the best of the best pertaining to their performance as musical equipment providers. My Guild is perfect in every way, but might change the strings due to loving the sound of Elixir's. Guild's quality is top notch. I can't imagine how good their higher priced guitars might be. Will have to check them out, but for now, I'm so pumped about my new D-240E. Thank you Sweetwater for your super quick quality service. You always make me feel comfortable buying a guitar online. As far as the guitar's sound, it seems to be so well balanced with highs and lows and mid range. This is something new to me and I like it, a lot.
Guild D 240E and Sweetwater
I've not written any reviews for Sweetwater, but I have given them a shout out on you tube.
The customer service, the expediting, and packaging should be THE INDUSTRY STANDARD!
Every person I've talked to exceeds my expectations, or maybe I should say, meets my expectations about how
customers should be treated. I'm 74 so I remember when customers counted. Sweetwater excels in that arena.
I'll never buy from anyplace else, if Sweetwater has what I'm looking for. That's my only complaint. They don't always have what I'm looking for.
I got a Guild D240E from them last Thursday, after ordering it on that Monday.... 1100 miles in 4 days, from start to finish is impressive, but is what I've come to expect from them.
I was.... unsure.... of the guitar, at first. I'm not a pro and consider myself barely a novice level player.
But, I do know what I like to hear and feel. I'm also a visual person as well as a bit of an eccentric. 2 of the reasons I bought the Guild, is, 1), the arch back (it is different!) and 2), the open tuners. I love me some open tuners.
The guitar itself is fine. Build is superb and playability is better than my Martin 00015M, which is what I judge playability by.
But, when I plugged it into my Fishman Mini Loud Box.... I was shocked and dismayed and no amount of tweaking
on the controls, either on the guitar, or the amp changed what I heard, with the amp setting right beside me. On that note, the sound hole controls are, IMO, worthless.
It sounded like my Gretsch 5420T on the low E. There's nothing wrong with the way my Gretsch sounds, but, the Guild is acoustic.
I put a set of Martin Monel 11-52 strings on it, for 2 reasons.
1), I don't like PB's and, 2), the strings that were on it were discolored from age.
I wasn't impressed with the string change as far as helping mellow out the low E goes.
So, I put a set of La Bella, silk and steel strings on it... and wow! Silk and steel (La Bella's at least)
will be my default strings on spruce from this point forward. But, plugged in the low E was still too prominent for my taste.
But, when I did a video to my iPhone 7 (SE model) I couldn't hear the low E prominence.
So, I took it to an open mic session and had one of the other players play it, plugged into a Bose L1 Compact PA System. Other players couldn't hear a problem so...
I'm a happy camper now.
First time Guild D-240E buyer
I have never owned or even played a Guild before, but when I purchased my Guild 240-E from Sweetwater and it arrived it was sounded fantastic and I am not kidding you when I played it without a pick and my cowboy chords it was like Christmas morning all over again. I discovered just how good a good guitar sounded. I have owned several Martin dreadnoughts including the Martin X series, an older 18, and a 28 custom. Loved them all but this Guild 240-D is a contender as far as good guitars go. I am literally learning from it each day. Great guitar and great service Sweetwater.
Awesome guitar for the money
I am learning to play from someone who has a solid wood Martin. I spent quite some time researching guitars. I tried a few models around this price point, most are fully laminated and do not sound as good as I was hoping. This guitar has some of the most features and best sound at the price. The solid wood top is something comparable name brands do not deliver for another $. I love the way it looks, feels, plays, and sounds. I will definitely be looking into Guild again if I decide to upgrade in the future.
Big guitar with a big bold sound!!
I've had this guitar for a month or so and I've really grown to like it. It has an arched back that really projects the sound, but it's not so big that it wants to slide off your lap. It has a solid spruce top. The neck is solid mahogany with a rosewood fretboard. It almost feels like the neck on my strat. It's a wide neck with nicely spaced frets. It's not as compact as my Martin, so it took a minute to get used to. But this guitar has a great sound and a great feel. And as always; Sweetwater delivered a guitar that plays perfectly. I barely had to tune it.
Cheers!!
Guild man for Life
I have had a Takamine for over a decade and have been kicking myself for not upgrading it all this time. The Guild D240E is a players guitar. I swear I can feel it become happier when I am playing...well maybe that is me becoming happier! The finish is top notch, the intonation is spot on, the Piezo pickup works beautifully. I am a Guild man for life now.
Amazing
Everything about this guitar is perfect, and, to me, it stands above many guitars that cost twice as much.
- Bellowing sound with excellent separation between the highs, mids, and lows
- Most comfortable neck on an acoustic guitar I've ever played
- Satin Polyurethane finish leaves the guitar feeling natural unlike a laminate guitar while also providing protection from sweat
- Vintage, open tuning machines are gorgeous
- Guild logo on the pluming headstock is super cool
I bought this guitar probably four years ago, and since that time I have swapped for other, more expensive guitars, thinking that I was upgrading. One of those was a Martin Road Series. It was fun to play, but ultimately showed me why I like this Guild the most. So I bought it again and I'm sticking with it.
They got every single thing right with this one.
Great guitar for the money
This guitar plays and sounds great one of the best playing acoustics iv ever owned. I would recommend it to anyone that plays acoustic....thanks sweetwater.
Five years in and still very happy!
I purchased my Guild D-240E from Sweetwater in 2016. In every respect, I can't say enough about how happy I am with my decision. As I researched before my purchase, it was obvious there were NO other options at this price point where you get a solid Sitka top, all natural hard wood construction, real bone nut and saddle, top quality craftmanship AND a premium padded soft case. No man made composites here except for the plastic bridge pins, which I ultimately replaced with bone just recently. The guitar's tone has gotten even better with time, no doubt to the solid Sitka top starting to age. My only gripe at all is having the 9v battery pack installed with Velcro inside the body, which I have noted Guild has since fixed with battery access now being in the lower, outside bout. I absolutely love my Guild and Sweetwater's top notch customer service is second to none.
Quality and Craftsmanship!
This is, in my opinion, the very best sub $... acoustic guitar made. The quality and craftsmanship is much more than you deserve for the price. It is perfect for the serious beginner, as you won't shred your hands or grow out of it anytime soon, and will literally make you a better player. Give it a good setup, throw on some Elixers, and it will shame a lot of $700.00 dreadnaughts. This dreadnaught has earned a rightful place next to my much more expensive Taylor's and has made me a Guild fan for life.
Plays like a dream!!
Quite literally one of the best acoustics I have ever played in my entire life and you don't have to pay an outrageous price for it!!! The neck feels super comfortable and was ready to play right outside the box! I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a new acoustic but doesn't want to spend over $1,000 to get "a good sound".
Good guitar for the value
Very pleased with the quality for the price. Tone woods/playability on point. Good low end and clarity for a guitar in this class. Sweetwater always fantastic to work with.
Unbelievably awesome guitar
My first Guild and I am in awe of it. Every inch of it is perfectly designed and flawlessly made. The sound is phenomenal and deeper/richer than my wife's Baby Taylor. The sales team "Damon" went above and beyond to ensure everything was 110% taken care of from the beginning to end of sales and shipping process. Sweetwater has a platinum performance person on their staff. Can't say enough good about his service.
Left Handed Guild D-240E
Just bought this guitar and it looks and plays like a Champ!!!
My First Guitar
The packaging was dope, the guitar is absolutely beautiful in person and sounds amazing. The Guild brand is dope, and this guitar in particular is great for any guitar player, whether beginner or expert. Very excited, and I'm glad I went with this brand as my first.
great guitar
i just started playing this year and this is my second guitar so far i am pretty happy with it. it looks great plays nicely and has very good play ability
This guitar is the best for this price range
I just received this guitar and I could not be happier with it. The electronics sound excellent. It plays very nicely. I love the feel of the neck. It stays in tune. The construction is sturdy (doesn't feel cheap and is nice and solid). The tone is phenomenal. I was playing through some Pantera tracks like Suicide Note Pt. 1 and Cemetary Gates and the guitar sounded just about spot on. This guitar can handle any kind of playing from fast picking metal to fingerpicking. I love it. Not to mention, it is very comfortable to play. As Guild says, "These guitars are made to be played!"
Great Guitar For The Price
This guitar has a very good tone and is really easy to play. When I got it in the mail, the action was very low. There was a slight string buzz off the bat so I made a very small adjustment to the truss rod and now the buzz is mostly gone. It also has a lighter gauge string than I'm used to.
Despite all the other reviews criticizing the pickup, I actually like it. It sounds very good plugged in; not too much treble and not too much bass. There is not a on board tuner which I was a bit disappointed about, but it's my fault that I didn't check before hand. Not a big enough issue to dock it any stars on the review.
Thanks Reid Bright for helping me pick out this guitar!
Perfect Re-Beginner Guitar
After many years away, I decided to get back into playing. After a lot of research and trying dozens of guitars out at various stores in my area, I settled on the Guild D-240e. What I wasn't decided on was where or how to buy one. Fortunately, Sweetwater set me up with Andy who couldn't have been more helpful and communicative. Made the purchase easy, answered all of my questions and made sure I was comfortable with everything from set-up to the actual sale. As far as the guitar itself goes, it plays like a dream. The lower-but-not-too-low action is perfect for my playing style, the neck is incredibly easy to navigate and the sound... well, for what I spent it sounds a lot like the guitars my professional musician cousins play, even they're impressed. It has a rich, full, deep sound thanks to the arched back that is exactly what I was looking for. So happy with it, will definitely be back to Guild and Sweetwater for more in the future.
Great guitar all the way around.
Well balanced tone, just enough bottom-end, very well crafted all the way around. I love the satin/matte finish. The neck is super comfortable; feels like an electric. For the price-point, this guitar is awesome! I couldn't be happier with mine.
Amazing guitar
Solid packaging
The guitar arrived in perfect shape
Easy action, great full sound and very comfortable to play
I finally got a Guild!!
I love my D-240E. Sweetwater did a great job setting it up and doing their inspection. It's gorgeous and the matte finish is great -- no fingerprint nightmare. The resonance and intonation are terrific. My sales engineer Clint is the best. Thanks!
Great guitar
I just got my D-240E this week. It's got a great sound both acoustically and with the pickup. Excited to start playing shows with it. Overall happy and excited to see how this guitar breaks in.
Love that bright sound!
I just received mine a couple weeks ago and this was the bright, big sound that I wanted from a guitar, especially for not a lot of money. The action is on the lower side which is how I like it. It even came in tune. Big thanks to Alex from Sweetwater for steering me towards this guitar!
ONE WEEK AND I AM LIKING THIS GUITAR!
First let me give KUDOS to Sweetwater and my S/E Josh Pippin. The Sweetwater Team has really stepped up. Josh took care of some details that I really appreciated.
I received my D-240E a week ago (on a Sunday no less) and I have been playing it pretty much non-stop. Standard tuning and a couple of alternative tunings, it seems to meet every criteria. Unplugged or plugged into my Fishman Loude Box Mini, it sounds good. It feels good in my hands. It looks good and is modestly priced, so it was easy to afford. Oh... and it is EASY to change the pre-amp battery! I have never owned a GUILD instrument before but based on this, i will consider them in the future.
Looks good, sounds great, comfortable
I love the classic look. It's super light and comfortable to play. Has some little bumps on parts of the finish. Maybe dust from the factory? Most importantly, it sounds great. Also, has some marks on the side of the fretboard from where they worked on the frets. Not as good as my friend's Martin X series, but not far off.
Hard to beat for the price
For the price, the tone of this guitar amazing! Full bodied and rich, the tone is more than I was expecting. The only reason it did not receive 5 stars is due to the pickguard appearing to have waves going through the middle of it. It appears to be a manufacturing defect, however, this does not take away from the sound of the guitar at all. The defect is only noticeable by the player looking down and not by anyone viewing the guitar straight on. The craftsmanship in all other areas of the guitar is near perfect. Again, this is not what I was expecting for a guitar in this price range. Finally, Sweetwater, as usual, was excellent to deal with and the shipping was incredibly fast!
I'm going to have to give this guitar a name...Lucille!
Hi,
Great acoustic electric guitar. Its rough enough to jam rock tunes and sweet enough to sing James Taylor. Round curved back body for resting. The neck playability is awesome. Love the Guild emblem on the headstock and the headstock itself.
GO GUILD!
JONATHAN HOWARD
I love this guitar!
I have been in need of a new guitar for a while and this guitar was definitely a great pick. I love the classic, natural sound to this guitar and it has been a joy playing it. I like the mahogany sides and back, and the arched back is one of the thing I enjoy the most. Thank you for this guitar Guild!
Guild D-240E
Just getting back into playing and I didn"t want to spend a fortune but wanted a decent guitar. After looking for quite a while and having owned Guild guitars in the past I decided this was the one for me. At first I was not really "relating" to this guitar. I won"t claim it sounded shrill like the other review but mids and treble really stood out to much for my liking and I was considering returning it. Thankfully a quick trip to a friend who plays guitars that are worth more than my truck
Lovely Instrument for a Tight Budget
Needing a replacement for a mid-range acoustic that I damaged at a worship leading gig, I went through a couple other acoustics that l was less than fond of. I finally landed on this Guild. I never had experience with the brand before, but wow, I have been very pleasantly surprised!
Wonderful balance and nice bottom end that isn"t boomy. Loud. Nice sustain. Beautiful workmanship. Love the open back tuners. Fishman/Guild AP-1 pickup isn"t top end but very serviceable. Excellent for both fingerstyle and strumming. All in all, a great value! Would definitely purchase again.
Clueless after purchase
I recently purchased a used D240E at the local guitar store. It sounds incredible. When I plugged it into my Laney LA20C acoustic amp, it was pure bliss. I brought it to my usual guitar shop for a cleanup, new strings, and just check if the neck needed a bit of adjustment. The guy told me that when the truss rod gets adjusted, it only extends to the twelveth fret, unlike my Yamaha FG700 as well as my Sigma which extends all the way to the end of the fretboard. I'm sure Guild knew what they were doing when they designed the guitar. It's just the first time I was aware some guitars are made this way. Will this stop me from getting another Guild? Not really. However I'll ask more questions before my next purchase (either Martin, Guild, Gibson, or even Taylor). However I just wanted to mention this to anyone who either owns the same guitar and didn't know it, or thinking about buying one. But this won't stop me from playing until my fingers are ready to fall off.
Great sound
I decided it was time to steep up from low level acoustic guitars. I haven't been playing long but wanted something better quality. I am so impressed with the sound of this guitar. I almost can't believe the price for a solid wood guitar. I played some other guitars around this price point and just didn't feel the same quality. I looked at some HPL guitars and I just wasn't impressed with the feel or sound. This guitar feels and sounds like a much more expensive instrument. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is more of a knock on me. I should have had Sweetwater set up the guitar. The action is pretty high and the strings that came on it are heavier than I like to play. I really wanted to play it out for the box first but now I know I will be taking it to my local shop to have it set up properly.
Guild D-240E
Recently purchased a Guild D-240E from Sweetwater. I've owned a broad spectrum of guitars from Martin, Taylor, Yamaha to Alvarez. While, this Guild is not the best acoustic I've ever played, it definitely holds it's own weight. It doesn't seem as sturdy as my Yamaha A3M seemed, a great guitar that I loved. The Guild is much lighter and the wood construction doesn't seem as heavy duty as some solid wood guitars. But that being said, I would say the build and sound quality is equivalent to that of the Martin X series, and at a significantly lower price point. It sounds great, but didn't blow me away...but I'm also not disappointed. There are better guitars out there if you have the money, but if you're looking for an affordable Acoustic-Electric that looks and sounds great this is a great option. As far as my purchase experience with Sweetwater it was great. I purchased a floor/demo model for a slightly lower price and it was pristine. Everything was packaged safely and arrived intact and my rep is always polite and helpful.
Beautiful guitar and great service
Just received this guitar last week. Perfectly set up and in tune out of the box. In beautiful condition. Played easier than the guitar it replaced (older Epiphone aj200sce). Sounds fantastic even though not fully broken in yet. I love it, and have gotten several compliments so far. I play only as a hobby... Not now nor ever actively gigging. So price and value was perfect for me. And of course, Sweetwater service is excellent. My only issue is the included strings are a little harsh on my fingers, but again... Not broken in. I'm very very happy with this guitar and the staff at Sweetwater
Good and bad
Sweetwater packed it well, they are always great to deal with. Build is flawless. Setup is incredible. But, I have not warmed up to the guitar like I had hoped I would. The tone is very mid-rangey and shrill. It doesn't ever settle down as the string wear in. I bought this as a backup guitar, and one to switch out to when I need to set my number 1 down for a little while. But it just doesn't do what I need, tonally. Disappointing
