Hypercardioid Dynamic Instrument Mic

For bringing out the real, dynamic sound of your drum toms and congas, nothing beats (ha, ha) the D2! The D2 accurately reproduces the warmth and punch you listen for from percussion, leaving out the muddy, indistinct "boom" that can mar recording. The D2's natural warmth also makes it a great mic for saxophones and other woodwinds requiring a true, sensitive, yet big, reproduction.

Great Choice for Toms

By Paul from Cleveland
Music Background: Long time drummer and project studio owner

I recently expanded my drum micing technique. I have been a Glyn Johns guy for years. I love that technique, but decided to augument it with mics on my rack and floor tom. My excellent Sweetwater rep, Yuval Fuchs, strongly recommended the audix D2 (and D4 for the floor tom) mics and I couldn't be happier. Great sound, and priced well. They are really well built and I think they'll last!

Perfect Rack Tom Mic for live performance

By Brett

No EQ, compression, etc., necessary. Just tune your tom, dampen your batter head to fit the venue, and point the D2 toward the middle of the head.

Note: the D4 mic works brilliantly with my floor tom. I highly recommend getting a D4 for your floor tom(s) and a D2(s) for your rack tom(s).

Sax mic

By Sweetwater Customer

I've owned one for over 20 years . A warm full sounding microphone that does not add brightness. Small size fits easy in case compartments.

Great frequency response

By Malcolm from Milford, CT
Music Background: Drummer

Great microphone. Does what it's supposed to do. I use it on a 12 inch rack tom with a boom mic stand, and I get a really good round punchy sound out of it.

Audix d2 is a great rack tom Mick.

By Alan H. from Hurricane,wva
Music Background: Drumming sence 1964...

I got this for live shows, and does the job well, much easier to work with than the senn.421 that I now keep in our studio to record with.

Great affordable drum mic

By David A. from Philadelphia, PA USA
Music Background: Pro Drummer

I have been using Audix Drum mics and the D2 for over 10 years. Like Shure dynamic mics, they are high quality, road tough and accurate. When I say "accurate", I find that they are very good at reproducing the drum's natural sound without any coloration. I am pretty much using the D2 for my 8x12 rack tom or occasionally on djembes or congas. It's ok on larger diameter toms, but better on higher frequencey drums. It's also good on guitar cabs in combination with a Royer 121. While the D2 is primarily intended for live sound reinforcement, I have had good success recording with it to Logic with a Focusrite pre amp. As I said earlier, I have been using Audix mics for over 10 years and have never had an issue or failure. For the quality, sound and price point, you can't go wrong with the D2

One Trick Pony?

By Pags from New York
Music Background: Engineer, musician, builder of electronic devices.

First things first, this is not a utility mic like a 57 or 421 or something like that. This mic has one job and it does that job well. Can you use it on things other than toms, sure you can, will it perform well.... probably not. The mic is built to handle somewhat higher SPL's and has a tailored response to work with rack toms (doesn't do bad on a floor tom, but wouldn't be a go to mic for that application, audix makes a mic for that purpose as well). Another plus for this mic is it's size. its compact enough that you can easily fit it where it needs to go without some large body sticking up and then an xlr connection housing sticking up even further. (anyone that's mic'd a tom with a 57 or 421 knows what this means) Especially useful for drummers that keep their cymbals low over the toms.
