Think of it as a controller

By Menno from SoCal

It's true, the sounds are not great. But to me, that is not what this keyboard is about.

The price has gone up now, but I bought it for $ and for that money you got Korg's premium weighted RH3 action.

This is subjective, but to me this was the best action under a grand, and as such a no-brainer if you're looking for a weighted controller. But...

It's a controller without pitchbend/modulation, and it has MIDI DIN only, no USB. This was not a dealbreaker for me as I have other keyboards, and I just wanted the best weighted action at the best price.

Like I said, the sounds are not great, I wouldn't use them for recording or gigging. But nice to have just in case, like when I'm recording a singer and need to give him/her the correct pitch for a note or something like that.

At the current $, I don't think this is the insta-buy it was at $. At this price it should have USB and pitchbend/modulation. Or better sounds.

If they release a D2 with exactly that, it would be a winner.

Pastor

By Sweetwater Customer

We have owned Korg pianos since 1985. This piano is a newer version of our piano bought in the early 1990's. It sounds great and is perfect for our Church ministry.

The Sounds Aren't great

By Sweetwater Customer

My wife had a Korg concert EC350 with better sounding presets. As another reviewer mentioned the built in piano is very tinny and uninspiring. The way to go is to use this as a controller for a software like Pianoteq or similar.

Love it

By Daniel F. from Greenville, NC
Music Background: Vocalist, Pianist, Song Writer, Touring Musician, Performance Musician

I love my Korg, the best sounding piano I've ever played as well as the weight of the keys. I would recommend getting a heavy duty piano stand for live play because the one I have is very flimsy due to the weight of the piano. I love the sounds, I love the key weight, I wouldn't want to play another show without one but due to my irresponsibility of not having a stable stand it's been through the ringer.

It is not Korg, Sweetwater, or anyone else but for my own mishaps that it now needs to be replaced and will gladly buy another one. The power supply had given up on me making it difficult for practice or performance often having to adjust and align the power cord just right just to have the proper voltage for playing, but I don't believe this to be a common issue amongst other pianists.

Nice action for not a lot of money

By Menno from SoCal

Header says it all. Think of this as a good feeling keyboard action for your DAW or whatever, and it just happens to have some onboard sounds that'll do in a pinch.

This is Korg's top of the line action in a compact lightweight chassis, at a very reasonable price point. I would not want to use this as a digital piano on a regular basis, I use it as a controller in my home studio setup. But it's nice to have the onboard sounds if you quickly need to give a singer a key or something like that.

That said, as a controller it really should have USB, and its absence is the reason I'm not rating it higher. If you can live with 5-pin DIN connector for MIDI, you'll get a nice feeling weighted action that has some basic sounds just in case.

Great keyboard action and impressive piano sound.

By Bruce from Washington

We had to sell our baby grand piano when we moved a few years ago. My wife greatly missed the instrument, but we have no room for a piano in our new quarters. We started looking at digital keyboards as a compromise. Primarily, we were looking for an instrument with excellent keyboard action. We were also interested in a good digital piano sound. No consideration was given to other instrument voicings, MIDI capability, after-effects, or DSP effects. We settled on the Korg D1, based primarily on features and reviews. We are not disappointed. Mounted on a Korg ST-SVI stand, the keyboard is small enough to fit easily into our office. The keyboard action is very impressive - my wife likes the action better than our old baby grand's. The piano voicing is very good, with clear, deep bass and crisp high notes. We're running it through a Peavey KB2 amp, which is a perfect match for the keyboard.

Good MIDI Controller

By Sweetwater Customer

Adding my review since there is some mixed messaging about this product on here. To provide some background I have been playing piano for 3 years, and have owned products from Casio and Kawai, including an acoustic upright K300, and have extensively played products from Yamaha and Roland as well. So take all reviews with a grain of salt, but I feel like I know what I'm talking about.

First one clarification, the action in the D1 is not the same RH3 as the action from Kawai with the same name. And Kawai's RH3 is much better (but you have to get into an MP11 or ES920 to get it in a stage piano which is more than double the price of this). So there's that.

That said, the Korg D1 is an amazing MIDI controller. The action is very good, and far better than the entry level actions from Yamaha and Kawai. I actually think it is on par with Roland's PHA-4, but they are not the same. The Roland action is lighter and closer to a real acoustic action in my opinion, but if you like a slightly heavier action the Korg would be better.

However, the sound in the D1 is not good. It has some aspects that are great, like the resonance and sustain, sound good, but the overall sample is very low fidelity, and the dynamics are terrible (you can't play above Mezzoforte on it no matter what you do). I think the sound would be fine for utility use or for a beginner but for any exposed solo piano playing you will need something better.

I think this should be marketed and thought of as a MIDI controller with some crude sound built in as a backup. It is clear all of the money here is being spent on the action, and that is not a bad thing.

At the end of the day, I think the competition to this product is the Roland FP-30X, or perhaps the RD-08, which are both similar price, have the comparable PHA-4 action, but also have genuinely decent built-in sound. At this time the FP-30X is $ less than the D1, so I think that makes a compelling option considering you are getting sound (quality, as well as speakers), as long as you like the action. But you definitely wouldn't be making a mistake with the D1, which I do think is a great product. It might be about $ too expensive at this point given the competition but as a MIDI controller I think it beats all the competition under $ with the possible exception of the Rolands as stated. Pair this with Pianoteq, or a VST of your choice, and you have a great setup. If I could do it over I think I would get an FP-30X, as sometimes I don't want to mess with a VST and having usable on board sound would be nice.

Great feel, lacking in quality sound

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Experienced, pro gigs

I was looking for an electric piano with a great feel, and am happy with the D1 for this purpose. However the actual piano (and other preset) sounds are lacking depth, and sound terrible (high and tinny) in the monitor I've used for years, which handles an earlier korg and a low end casio just fine. I am in search if a new amp with lots of bass and am hoping this will fix the problem.

Best Value Out There

By BENJAMIN B. from Philadelphia, PA

Wow. Holy schmoly. I had demanding and exacting standards, but I was unprepared for the value of this thing. There cannot be a better deal out there for a keyboard that gives you the most authentic analog piano key feel. The onboard patches sound great, it has everything you need and more for some basic stuff (Korg does not disappoint with their patches), and in any event this has a midi out and in this day and age with a MacBook it will play any instrument you want it to… and it's a full 88 key with the feel of a million dollar piano. You shall not regret, for sure.

The perfect keyboard for me

By Tomas from Mena, AR
Music Background: played the piano all my life (50+ years)

I was looking for a new keyboard with the most important feature being the key action. I wanted something very similar to a traditional piano in terms of the feeling of the key action. I tried a few other keyboard at music stores but they were all too light and insubstantial with the keys. Then I learned about Korg D1 and without being able to demo it beforehand I ordered it from Sweetwater - and that was the best decision I could have made. This is the perfect keyboard if you want a sturdy keyboard with a good balance between key resistance and playability. It's just right. Yes, the keys are heavier than most keyboards on the market but also the closest to the feel of a regular piano that you can find (unless you pay thousands of dollars more). I also like the fact that it doesn't come with internal speakers. I could now choose the exact monitor speakers I wanted suitable for the setup at home, with much better sound than any internal keyboard speakers could ever provide.

Best keyboard in it’s class

By Skip M. from San Diego, CA
Music Background: Performing pianist

I own Kawai ES, Yamaha PS and Korg. The key action on the D1 is closer to my grand than anything I've played.
The build is solid and the interface intuitive.
Korg piano tones sound processed and don't compare with Kawai or Yamaha.
As a studio controller and practice unit this fits the bill at an affordable price.

I'm satisfied!

By Jonathan from Seattle
Music Background: Many years playing, gigging, producing.

The band I'm is beginning to get booked frequently, and with that I've been in need of a stage piano that sounds great, and more importantly, feels great to play. Plus, being able to take a few gig-life knocks was also a consideration. Previously, I've been carting my Kronos around to gigs, which I don't love the idea of. Not to mention, the 2 min start up time made me nervous if the power went off mid-show. I read a lot of reviews on all types of stage pianos – focusing on 88 keys in the $500-$1k range, and ultimately picked the D1, primarily because I'm partial to the warmth of Korg sound engines, but also because of the RH3 action. I'm a blues / jazz based classically trained pianist, so I like a keyboard that has some girth to the feel, and that I can sink into – but also that keeps me in check with resistance and helps those super fast runs stay in time and accurate.

I'm really happy with the D1. Its piano and e-pianos sound great - not as good as the Kronos, but those nuances are lost in a club setting anyway. Do they inspire me to play? Absolutely. The portable size, for an 88, is also great. The best part for me, however, is the action. I love how these keys feel on stage; they're a real joy to play. They've got just the right give to dig into swampy grooves and just the right resistance to sparkle top end licks and runs. I also like how simple the board is to use with only a few buttons. For my particular gig - mostly piano, e-piano, and the occasional pad - this is just right. Plus, this board feels beefy and solid. I'd be heartbroken if it were damaged from too much road life, or stolen, but that is a better outcome than said negatives happening to the Kronos.

Is it all roses? No. My biggest gripe is the lack of effect setting memorization per patch. The board resets effect settings to defaults when powered off – which I can live with. But, it also resets manual effect setting adjustments per patch when one moves to a different patch. Meaning, if I select reverb setting 2 is set for Piano 1, and then head on over to Electric Piano 1, upon my return to Piano 1 for next song, reverb setting is back to the default of 1. Is that a grand problem? No, it is a simple button click to change the reverb setting to where I want it – but it would be nice if it was remembered per patch so when I'm on stage its one less thing to think about. Small nuisance compared to all the benefits I'm pulling in for this board.

So, overall – love it. Great board. Highly recommend if you're in need of a portable stage piano with fantastic feel.

2 years and still going strong

By David Z. from Manalapan, NJ
Music Background: playing piano since age 7 (now 52 years!), composing since age 15!, teaching since my 20's

When the pandemic hit in 2020, I had to scramble to convert my teaching program to an online one. I had an 88-key controller I'd been using with a piano library, but it was far from ideal for online piano instruction. I briefly borrowed a Yamaha P45, but knew I had to get something different, as I didn't need the speakers, and it had no output, via USB or MIDI. Curious about my options, I contacted Cody Kraus at Sweetwater, as he had helped with a few prior purchases. Cody suggested the Korg D1, because it didn't have built in speakers and it had a great keybed ...

2 years later, and I'm, still VERY happy with it, and use it every single day, for all my classes. The keys feel great (I learned on a heavy acoustic piano), the sounds are rich, and the MIDI works without fail when I have to create or fix an arrangement in Sibelius (THAT notation app, or more appropriately, its current developer, AVID, deserves its own, umm, commentary) ...

If you're considering this piano, and you have similar criteria, it should be a no brainer ...

Korg D1

By Michael B. from Clarion, PA
Music Background: 57 years

I shouldn't have jumped to buy this. Korg has been my favorite keyboard company since 1982. I have played semi and pro for 55 years. All I can say is that my 19 year old SP 200 could teach the D-1 some lessons. Hoping to sell.

The unicorn.

By Drphoto from Louisville, KY
Music Background: semi pro FoH engineer

After initially planning on getting the Yammie P125, I read multiple reviews saying the Korg RH3 key bed was superior to the dated action on the 125. So I took a chance, I mean it does have same key bed as the flagship Korg Kronos. Man, am I glad I did. Wow, it feels terrific. The one thing that is very impressive, is the keys don't feel stiff if you play them up toward the top, near the case. Most pianos at this price point can't pull off that trick. Listening w/ high quality in ear monitors (don't have hooked up to my mixer yet) it sounds very good. Does a terrific job of string resonance emulation. The damper pedal is like a real piano pedal, although the included one doesn't support half damping. (though that can be upgraded, as the keyboard supports that function. Plus, w/ the Korg sound module app, I can use iPhone 13 as a module, which doubles (I think) the polyphony and can add all sorts of synth plugins. Not bothered by lack of built in speakers, in fact prefer as to used in a studio w/ sound system. Down the road, might add powered JBL monitors, but lack of speakers might be a deal breaker for home user. Would not hesitate to recommend for the sub $1K range. Why did I title this review 'the unicorn'? Because this is a real pro stage piano for less than a grand.

Only keyboard in its class

By Sweetwater Customer from Vermont

After trying the other popular keyboards in this price range in person (Casio, Yamaha, Kawai), the D1 stands apart in the most important criteria: controls and quality of the keybed. Ignoring all the geegaws, putting your fingers on this keyboard side-by-side with the others: there really is no comparison. If you want something that feels like a better quality grand or baby-grand then this is it. If you want the feel of a rattly, worn honky-tonk upright, then maybe one of the others will do. This keyboard is quiet, solid, has quality keytop feel, and the nice ka-chunk action of a real hammer.

As for the rest of the features: The controls are perfect. Easy button pad that you can use by feel even in complete darkness, a real volume knob, easy-to-use touch, reverb, brilliance, and chorus controls. 30 demo songs for 30 voices - what more do you need? There are no speakers and so no need for an amplifier which means the power draw is minuscule and only requires a tiny AC adapter. Midi in/out, 1/4" out, a really nice metal sustain pedal, and a headphone jack. If you have a decent stereo or BT speakers, you already have better speakers and amplifier than you could ever pack into a keyboard in this price range so just get a Midi-BT interface for $50 and blast away, or plug the midi into your computer audio interface box. I have the headphones on 90% of the time anyway.

In short, Korg only put in the features that absolutely need to be on the keyboard itself and each of the features was thoughtfully designed. Bravo to the engineers and product managers. I cannot say enough good about this keyboard. It is an absolute delight to play.

Great controller for the money

By RT from Orlando, FL

If you want a controller with some approximation of "real piano" feel and you're not concerned with onboard sounds, I'm not sure there's a better bang-for-buck option than the D1. It's not a real piano, obviously, but the action is better than (or at least as good as) some pricier competitors. Solid build quality, no nonsense, works great for my purposes (controlling VST pianos and soft synths), no complaints.

Nice key action, electronics glitched out, needs repair after four months.

By Mark H. from Dallas, Texas
Music Background: 34 years playing piano

The keyboard action is nice as advertised, but the electronics are garbage. After four months of ownership the built in sounds have glitched, two of the piano sounds have disappeared. The easy piano 3 and the grand piano 2 are gone. After my experience with the Prologue 16 and now the D1, I will never buy another Korg product. Waste of time and money.

Wonderful keyboard

By Ellie E. from Northampton, MA
Music Background: Physicist, lifelong audio nerd, aspiring electronic musician

Sometimes, first impressions aren't everything.

I wanted a keyboard that could be both a stand-alone piano and a MIDI controller for synthesizers. The Korg D1 stood out to me because it was part of a class of instruments primarily intended to be stand-alone pianos, but unlike many others - most notably the Yamaha P-125, which I also considered - it actually has a proper DIN MIDI port, rather than being limited to USB only. I also appreciated its highly rectangular, understated appearance and relatively low vertical height, something I really appreciate whenever I'm playing a keyboard on top of a desk. The lack of internal speakers makes it somewhat sub-optimal for home use, but I can live with that; I like messing with sound systems anyway, and would probably end up connecting it to one even if it did have its own speakers.

When I first took my new D1 out of its box, I was immediately disappointed to discover that the chassis is not made out of solid wood or even plywood, but particle board, which had already been damaged in shipping - one of the five rubber feet on the bottom had torn out. Particle board is probably my least favorite construction material for just about anything. Twice the weight, half the strength, as they say. They've used a lot of it here to make up for its shortcomings; the bottom plate appears to be 3/8" thick, and I was actually able to re-attach the torn-off support foot by just using a slightly longer and wider screw. As far as overall structural integrity goes, I think it's easily sturdy enough to pick up and carry around without concern for accidentally breaking the paneling, though I do still worry about the risk of nicks and dents. It's also just much heavier than a plastic-shelled piano would be, and at around 35 pounds, it's the heaviest piano I considered. On my first day of owning it, I was decidedly disappointed, and figured I would be sending it back and exchanging it for some other piano, maybe that Kawai that everyone's talking about.

But then I finally sat down and played it.

I quickly fell in love with both the keybed and the sound. The keys are perfectly weighted, the mechanical noise of the action is quiet, and the tactile experience of playing it greatly exceeded my expectations. Out of all the electronic keyboards I've had a chance to become familiar with so far (albeit pretty short list), this one is easily my favorite.

Some reviewers have said that the piano sound of the Korg D1 is substandard, and while I haven't had much of a chance to compare it to other keyboards in its price class, I can at least say that this is not a problem for me. I think its onboard sounds are excellent. It has a larger and better selection of piano sounds than the Casio Privia I've tried, and the simulation of sympathetic resonance and damper sounds strikes a good balance of realistic but understated. I don't think it has the same level of detail as the Kawai ES110's sound generator, but it also avoids replicating some aspects of an acoustic piano that I think can be distracting. To me, it sounds like an extremely finely-tuned and tightly-constructed acoustic piano, which is just about all I could ask for. If you're a connoisseur of piano sounds and attentive to fine details, then the D1 probably won't be able to fool you into thinking you're playing an acoustic piano, but it's easily enough to fool me.

The D1 supports partial pedaling, and while some reviewers have said that theirs didn't come with a pedal to match, mine definitely did. I even tested the pedal with an oscilloscope to make sure it wasn't my imagination, and it really does have a variable resistance depending on how far you press it down. So that's a nice surprise.

Anyway, it wasn't exactly love at first sight, but it still turned out just as well in the end. I'm stopping half a star short of a perfect score here because I do think the particle-board construction is a disappointing and inferior alternative to plastic, but I think the rest of it makes up for that shortcoming well enough. While I haven't had the opportunity to compare it side-by-side with any other piano, I'm quite satisfied with it and definitely think that I made a good choice.

Incredible hammer-feel; good-enough tones

By Skeeter from North Yarmouth, ME
Music Background: Bloodied-stump hacker that somehow makes it work.

Sure, she's a heavy girl at 35 pounds, but it plays like a real piano, the feel. I have it plugged into a Peavey KB3 (not a great amp, no, but durable and multifaceted), and while the tones are pretty good, they're not great to my ear, yet I am an analog snob-- nothing beats a real piano -- so there's that.

Anyhow, for the money -- I finally own a Korg! -- it is a great value, and look forward to spending maybe just a little less time on guitar and more time on the D1.

My sales rep Logan is great and extremely musically inclined and knowledgeable (the man knows his hard bop! Very happy with my Sweetwater experience. I always try to buy local, but when I can't, oh well. But Sweetwater has some LLBean-type customer service -- bias alert, my wife works for them in Freeport, ME -- in that they genuinely care and the communication is clear, unforced, and pleasant. And I haven't been bombarded with emails since the purchase. Phew.

Cost effective for good weighted action in a controller

By Paco S. from Vermont
Music Background: 20+ years as an active weekend warrior

The internal sounds would be ok for a beginner. For professional use the internal sounds are very subpar. But the D1 gives you Korg's top of the line RH3 weighted action in an affordable and compact midi controller. For that, it was well worth the money for me. The RH3 may not be the best weighted action available, but with the D1 it is arguably the best weighted action you can get for under $...

I am Here today to Write my First Review to Thank All my Sales Engineer and One in Particular!!! Also How Awesome Korg D1 is as well!

By Yohan
Music Background: Guitar, Ukulele, and Piano

First, I want to thank all my Sales Engineer Patrick, Mickey, and Larry!

Korg D1

Pros: The piano is sturdy and it is well built and the Key action is amazing!!! Truly Japanese-made keybed the action is perfect and it really feels like my old acoustic piano!

Cons: I have a JBL 104 Studio Monitors I brought from Sweetwater with the help of Mickey and well it is nice speakers and Mickey gave me an outstanding price for it too! But with the Korg D1, it sounded small. I can't hear anything with the cable I brought from sweetwater and I had to use the 3.5 mm cord the came with the speaker to get any type of hearable sound. So, I thought the Con was JBL 104 and Korg D1 is a No go. Well, I was wrong!!!

Here comes my Main Point!!! Larry my New Sales Engineer not only got me another cable but he did it with speed and a caring heart! I was excited when I got the other cables and well sadly that didn't work well either and then Larry helped me with another cable and it was an RCA cable to TRS cable and well guess what now my JBL 104 Sings!!! Yes, Korg D1 and JBL 104 are in action and it sounds amazing my ears just melted with the goodness! Search this item number: DKQR5 to get the right cables! If you want to get good speakers you can get the JBL 104 now with Bluetooth by searching this item number: 104prBT mine doesn't have Bluetooth but all in all, it is good speakers for the Korg D1!!! I hope this review is helpful and I just want to give a Shout Out to Larry!!! He went beyond to help me out and he is truly a blessing to Sweetwater his sear dedication is commendable and is beyond what I can put in words!!!!!

Incredible Key bed Feel

If you want an acoustic piano - but in a more portable form - look no further (unless you don't have an amp)

By Seth S. from PORTLAND, OR
Music Background: Jazz/Classical Piano

The design is beautifully compact and simple. It has a very simplistic and organized layout. The action is so much nicer than I had imagined. The keys feel as good if not better than my upright acoustic. Initially, I had planned to purchase the Kawai es110. I haven't played the Kawai, but I've played many Kawai acoustics and I feel as though their actions are lighter than normal pianos, therefore, I thought, their digital piano actions should feel similar. This Korg action is neither too light nor too heavy - for my touch at least. I simply love this instrument. The acoustic piano sounds are impressive (especially with the on board brilliance and reverb effects), but the electric piano sounds really blew my mind. I'm actually a little bummed I didn't save up for the SV2. Obviously, if you want on board speakers, this is not the keyboard for you. But if you're accustomed to playing acoustic pianos like me, buy this and don't think twice.

Great piano!

By Sweetwater Customer

This piano has amazing key action. The keys feel almost exactly the same as a real piano: heavy towards the bottom and lighter towards the top. It is made of a very solid feeling wood frame and it is very sturdy (trust me, I've already dropped it twice with no scratches). This piano is indeed heavy (the sign of a high quality digital piano), but it is very portable. This digital piano is perfect for the person looking to practice piano! This piano also supports midi in/out and works perfectly fine with GarageBand. The buttons on the piano don't work with GarageBand, but this is not a midi controller, this is a digital piano with support for midi output, so I don't really mind. Other than that, this is an amazing piano with a great price!

The Korg D1 Rocks!

By Roark from San Diego
Music Background: Hobbyist Musician

FROM unpacking and seeing it for the first time.. feeling the key action and hearing the superb piano sound..

TO experiencing the other incredible-sounding instruments (voices).. discovering the straightforward interface and enjoying many entertaining demos..

I liked the Korg D1 so much from the beginning (and at each step along the way), I felt the need to downplay my enthusiasm initially, just to keep my opinion from coming on too strong!

Out of the box and on the stand, the keyboard feels solid and looks great. The key action is excellent (not too hard and not too soft), compared with many keyboards we'd returned.

Our old speakers (and even a brand new soundbar) did not do this keyboard justice. On a tight budget, some affordable multimedia speakers did the trick.

The D1 feels and sounds better than any of the other keyboards we tried!

highly recommend!

By Zachary G. from Durham, NC

"I generally don't review anything"— me and a lot of other people on reviews.

Basically I was looking for a keyboard that

1. had 88 keys and a good action
2. had midi I/O for talking to a nord or other device
3. wasn't super heavy
4. wasn't expensive
5. had usable built in sounds

There are basically no options that fulfill all of these at this pricepoint, and the Korg D1 is really amazing at checking off all of these boxes. It's a little cheaply made, as evident by the very bare bones connectors (just a 9V wall thing, 1/4" L/R, 1/4" pedal, and 1/8" headphone) and the somewhat exposed unfinished plywood under the base and the not quite firmly attached side pieces.

But, the chassis will protect the keys, and it's light enough that you probably won't accidentally drop it. Contrasting this to a Yamaha P-125 which is all plastic but feels somehow more uniform to pick up...the P-125 is a great board but for fff classical passages the instrument starts to shake and feel rough on your hands, so I prefer the Korg action for full range of dynamics if I need them.

The sounds are... fine! Nuances of keyboard samples are generally lost for live sound, and while I probably wouldn't record with this, I got it for gigs and maybe some headphone practice so not an issue. Incidentally I think the piano sample is better than the SV1, but if you know how to tweak the SV1 obviously the SV1 has a lot of other bonuses added for live performance and a WAY deeper electric piano library.

The included damper works for jazz trio/pop/rock gigs but is limiting for more nuanced pedaling. I intend to eventually order the upgrade damper for more support when playing duo/solo/classical but I still got through several gigs with the pedal as is.

It's not the most lightweight, and 88keys is always a little cumbersome, especially in tight stages or on stairs, but this is very easy to carry.. around 40lbs with a case and cables/accessories, about 35lbs just as is. I tried to gig with a Kawai MP6 then an ES8 and while those actions and constructions are immensely better (the ES8 is probably the nicest "portable" slab board available, and intensely realistic samples) those are around 50lbs without accessories or case and that was just absurd to take to gigs. I can toss the D1 around with relative ease for something of its size.

Great Ditial Piano

By Ryan S. from Athens, OH

I have played synth action keys for many many years. Just recently started working toward a more classical style of playing (legit piano pieces), which requires weighted keys. I did a ton of research and am so happy I went with this.

I mostly use hardware synth, so the 5-pin din midi was a major bonus. The onboard sounds are good. The RH3 key action is superb to say the least. I play on an actual piano once in a while, and this is really close for me.

The onboard effects are a little underwhelming, but that's not really a big deal to me at all. I'd say if you are looking for a reasonably-priced, full 88-key keyboard with hammer action keys this is definitely one to look at that is very affordable.

Expressive and beautiful

By Vahagn
Music Background: Guitar, piano, not professional

First I tried Rondo Alla Turca, and then trills. I confirm that this instrument has proper piano response in both terms of the touch and sound. The action is superb and the sound is enough reach and beautiful. It weights only 16kg. The ultimate impression is that Korg D1 is a high quality piano controller plus very good piano sound.

Great midi controller and action

By Alex
Music Background: Professional

I was looking for a more compact 88-key keyboard to replace my Yamaha Motif XS8. The action is comparable—I probably like the Yamaha a small bit more, but they are both in the ball park with each other and you can make great music with either. The built in sounds would certainly get you by in a gig, but they aren"t going to blow you away. I like that there is a headphone jack on the front. It"s conveniently placed. Others have mentioned it, but it"s worth noting—there is no USB Midi. You will need to run a midi cable. I would purchase this keyboard again.

Really Shines as a 88 Key MIDI Controller

By Thomas S. from Virginia

I was searching for a high-quality piano-style 88 key midi controller for my home studio Yamaha MODX6 and after weeks of research I decided on the Korg D1. Two months later I can say the research paid off. The D1's RH3 keyboard is awesome. For non-controller usage (i.e. the onboard sounds/effects) it's as billed...an entry level keyboard. I practice with it on its own quite often...no complaints considering the price, however, as a controller I highly recommend it. The RH3 action is superb...and surprising at this price point. Note that it does not have USB MIDI (not a show stopper for me since I primarily use it to drive my MODX via standard MIDI cable). If you purchase the D1 I recommend you also purchase the KORG DS1H half-damper pedal. The keyboard comes with a small on/off type pedal. I also recommend the ST-SV1 stand...fits like a glove...and sturdy...no wobbles at all...solid.

Awesome

By david b.

To be honest, hands down this is the best piano ever. Very simple to work with and the sounds are majestic, rich and full tones. I will get another one just to keep it in my house for practice.

Best Ever

By Ben B. from Gulf Shores, AL

I've been playing piano since the mid 50's, so that puts me in the geezer category. My first electric piano was a 1957 Wurlitzer 120. I've played in bands my entire life, and continue to do so to this day. I've owned just about every brand of keyboard on the market ranging from $500 to over $4000. I usually bought a keyboard because I liked the key bed, or the piano sound, the organ sound, the weight, great reviews, ease of use, etc. You name a reason, and I've bought a keyboard for it. Usually, I would order the keyboard, and have sent two back over the years because they felt or sounded horrible. As you might guess, I've got a room full of keyboards to choose from when I get ready to play a gig.

I read some great reviews about the D1, and Piano Man Chuck gave it two big thumbs up on YouTube. Since I've been playing Korg for the past 10 years, I decided to give it a try. It had all the features that I've looked for in a stage piano for years, ease of use, no menus, midi in/out, one button transpose, relatively light weight, professional looks, and Korg's RH3 key bed. When I got ready to order one, about three weeks ago, every website I checked was out of stock. Holy crap, this must be a good piano, I thought. Well, holy crap, it's a GREAT piano! It's the only keyboard that I've played or recorded with since I got it. I'm seriously thinking about cleaning out my piano storage room, and making room for more D1s. I could go on for hours about how much I love this piano, but I'll just say this. If you need a great sounding, great playing, easy to use stage piano, you won't find a better one anywhere, for any price. ...an absurdly cheap price for this piano. If you can find one, buy it. You won't be disappointed!

So close to perfect!

By David from Coos Bay, OR
Music Background: Electronic/VOCALOID Producer

I've been drooling over the SV-1 for years because I love the RH3 keybed, but at nearly $2000 it was a little high price to pay since I only want it as a controller for VSTi on my computer. When this came along, it was (almost) the perfect thing! It's like an SV-1 in terms of feel and playability, but without all of the (admittedly really neat, but for me, totally unnecessary) sound board stuff. I mean, it has some sounds, and they seem decent enough, but I don't really use them. The only issue I have is that there is no USB, which means I have to use a MIDI to USB converter box. It's a very minor quibble, but it's the only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars. It really is the best keyboard I've ever used. As close to that real piano feel I miss from playing my piano teacher's Steinway when I was learning. Excellent as a controller. It does lack things like a mod/pitch wheel, aftertouch, etc., but that's why I have a little Roli block keyboard for leads that need that sort of stuff. This is the workhorse 'real piano' keyboard that feels great to play and makes all of the classic piano, organ, keyboard, & percussive sounds a pleasure to work with.

Korg D1

By Charles R.
Music Background: Professional Musician

I was just about to buy a different controller right before this hit the market. As a owner of the Korg Kronos, I was instantly sold by the RH3 keybed and price point. I would have gave it 5 stars in it had a mod wheel and pitch bend.

Review of the Korg D1 88-Stage Piano/Controller.

By Protean P.
Music Background: All Styles, and performances played on most of the usual suspects of musical instruments which include all species of keyboards, and string instruments that have been manufactured since the dawn of time. I got my start performing in the last century.

What makes the Korg D1 so good and why do I like it? First of all the piano key action is amazing in my opinion but that should come as no surprise to me because it is the same key action that Korg uses for their top of the line professional Kronos stage digital pianos and I have played those instruments many times. A key action needs to be properly weighted, graded, and responsive not only in touch but how it triggers the piano sound from a light gentle touch to a hard touch, and for a fast movement of your fingers across the keys. The quality and movement of the key action is 1st and foremost when shopping for and considering a digital piano. The Korg RH3 key action is outstanding in just about every way, but especially in this price range, and the RH3 key action does not feel like any other brand of home digital piano under $1000. It's very unique in that it has a natural, organic piano feel to it and in my opinion it is incredibly responsive regardless of the type of music you are playing or whether you are a beginner or very advanced player. You can really pound on this key action or play it lightly with subtle finger movements and the D1 responds accordingly like a real quality acoustic piano does offering lots of expression and great balanced weight on each each key so that you can really connect the keys you are playing to the music you are wanting to make. In other words you can put a lot of feeling into your music and this RH3 key action will keep up with you and not disappoint. I would consider the touch weight on this key action to be "medium" meaning not too firm and definitely not light. When you press down on the keys it feels like you are pressing down on acoustic piano keys in terms of key weight whether they be white or black keys. Also, just like on regular acoustic upright and grand pianos, the white key tops are made of a synthetic gloss white acrylic and the black keytops have some sort of a matte black finish on them which is nice so that you could more easily transition from this digital piano to a real acoustic piano without noticing much of a difference at all, especially when comparing the Korg D1 88-Stage Piano/Controller to a fine upright acoustic piano.
