Martin D-15M Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar - Natural Reviews

6-string Acoustic Guitar with Mahogany Top, Back, Neck, and Sides, and Solid East Indian Rosewood Fingerboard - Natural

The Martin D-15M acoustic guitar is a throwback to Martin's Style 15 models, which had their heyday back in the 1940s. A departure from Martin's more common spruce-topped models, the D-15M features an A-frame-X-braced mahogany top on an all-mahogany dreadnought body. A truly unique instrument, you'll find that the deep overtones of this all-mahogany dreadnought is perfect for filling out higher vocals and accompanying brighter spruce-topped acoustic guitars. If you're looking for an acoustic that combines complex tones and powerful projection, you're going to love the Martin D-15M!

Medium strings make it sing!

By Sweetwater Customer on March 25, 2024

I bought mine used (2015 model) and put lights on. Within a week I swapped them out for mediums and WOW!

No Bling, beautiful sound, Simple high quality.

By Andrew Ike from Twin City, GA on September 1, 2023 Music Background: Played in various churches over the years.

Love this guitar. Light weight, simple, elegant, and lovely tone. I would take this guitar anywhere. It's probably the perfect balance of high quality without having to be scared of damaging a $6k guitar. Well done Martin. This one's a gem.

Procrastination

By William Quaintance from Hicksville Ohio on August 17, 2023

Love the D15 M and its great sound and playability. I had it picked out for over a year was trying to sell my Martin X series before the purchase and the price on the D15M went up $ and rightfully so. Just happy I finally bought it.

Not flashy but sounds amazing

By Sweetwater Customer on August 16, 2023

I love the simplistic look of the D15M, all the way down to the rosette. You get major sound, build quality/craftsmanship without breaking the bank. This Martin is not flashy, but its not supposed to be. It pays homage to a time when great mahogany sound is more important than flashy binding, inlays and rosettes. I love mine and it isn't going anywhere!

Wonderful Instrument!

By Fred Rubin on May 10, 2023

Just love this!! Physically, it's beautiful. And the sound is deep, loud and resonant. I'm extremely pleased.

Excellent guitar!

By JBBIN from Texas on September 7, 2022

What a beauty! It arrived perfectly packaged and set up. Plays so smooth. Neck feels great and it sounds really warm. Like the way it smells too. Many thanks to Anthony Giraldi and the people at Sweetwater.

Trust the Reviews

By John Wilcox from DULUTH, MN on September 1, 2022 Music Background: Novice

I got my D15M in October, 2021 (writing this review in August, 2022.) It really is a remarkable guitar. So here are a few of my thoughts:

It is remarkably loud. I have a jumbo Guild with laminate back and sides and this guitar, even though it's smaller than the jumbo, is very, very much louder. I think that might have to do with the solid wood construction and how light it is. Mine weighs a little less than four pounds. The four that are listed on the Sweetwater website as I write this are all under four pounds. I played a few Taylor AD27s and Guild D25s while I was shopping around, and the Martin was noticeably lighter than both.

It plays very well. Although the neck is a little slimmer than what I usually go for, it is by no means a "skinny" neck.

It has that "Martin" sound. I know all of the literature about the D15M in particular and mahogany guitars in general focus on the pronounced mid-range, but to me, the bass is the star of the show. It isn't boomy, and doesn't have that fluffy "playing through cotton" sound that some bass-heavy acoustics have, but the bass is present and it is BEAUTIFUL.

The only "downsides" that I've experienced with this guitar is that, being all solid wood and a matte finish, it seems to be especially vulnerable to temp and humidity changes. It's finicky. Be prepared to keep it in its case during the winter months if you live in a cold place where your heater runs constantly.

But seriously, this guitar ROCKS. It is probably my favorite possession. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Nothing like a Martin.

By Edwin Estrada from Ocala Florida on July 25, 2022 Music Background: Long time experience. 50 plus years

I've purchased an array of guitars at Sweetwater. The Martin d15m is acoustic and is a spectacular guitar,i bought the Seymour Duncan Woody pickup here at Sweetwater and it sounds terrific plugged in. This guitar is a masterpiece, i love mine something incredible.

Amended Review Of Martin D-15M

By James Reeves from Claude, TX on July 25, 2022 Music Background: Rank Amateur, but I'm a gud speler!

I was reading the reviews here on this D-15M. When I got to mine, I saw that I dinged this great guitar for the nut width. That was completely unfair because I knew the nut width way before I bought this guitar. I believe that any product being reviewed should only be dinged if there is something wrong with the instrument. The nut width is part of the specs so it should not count against the guitar unless; the nut was cut wrong, the nut slots are not cut even, the wrong nut was installed, nut cracked or broken, the nut was installed wrong (out of alignment) or the wrong material was used to make the nut, etc. My D-15M matches Martin's specs 100%, and that is ALL of the specs not just the nut. This is a fantastic guitar! I haven't had it for very long, but I do play it a lot. The tone, resonance, playability, great looks, and the smell of Mahogany keeps drawing me to this guitar. I have a Martin D-28 as well, but this D-15M is equal to the D-28 as far as tone, resonance, playability, great looks and sustained notes go. They do not: Sound, play, feel, cost or look the same. The quality is equally high-end for both guitars. The D-28 costs more because the materials cost more, and the amount of work to build and finish a D-28 is significantly higher than on a D-15M. The D-15M has NO (none): Body binding, gloss finish, purfling, back strip(e) or end pieces like the D-28 does. Extra bling = Extra $$$.

Both guitars are excellent, with many features in common, but they also have significant differences (if they didn't, there would be no reason for one of them to exist). I just want to correct my mistake, so that folks reading my review(s) don't think that Martin has quality issues that they, certainly, do not have. If you are interested in an "All Hog" acoustic guitar, then make sure you at least give this guitar an in-depth look. Play one if you can find one locally. Spend as much time as you can with this guitar, and any other all-mahogany guitar that you are considering, so that you can get a good feel for the instruments. In my opinion, the Martin D-15M is one of the very best values in acoustic guitars. The sound / tone, playability, feel and smell is addicting; which is a good thing because you will play longer and more often. Just remember that practice is essential, but practice does not make perfect. Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice will make perfect. Having a Martin D-15M, for most people, will improve their skills. The D-15M is not for everyone, but for most of us, it will help us improve our playing. It is also a stellar studio guitar for recording and it also works great for playing-out / gigging. The price tag is low enough that if it becomes damaged, or stolen, while playing-out; it will not force you into bankruptcy to replace it. Take the D-15M out for live shows and leave your prized, top-shelf Standard series (or Deluxe, etc.) guitar safely locked-up at home where it will be protected from such evils as the ones listed here, and found in nightclubs regardless of genre. The D-15M's are very versatile: They are great for professional studio recording, playing-out in most every genre and last, but certainly not least, playing around a campfire, playing on the front (or back) porch, or playing on the couch with family and friends. The Martin D-15M is a great guitar, at a great price! And it is a Killer Blues Machine (KBM!)! For me, it is the answer to the question of, "What is the best guitar for Blues, Rock, Blues-Rock, Country, Country-Rock and most all of: "Roots Rock", Americana and Folk. It is a great guitar for any one, or any combination, of these genres. All of this plus the low, reasonable price tag, makes for one of the best deals, on acoustic guitars, that you will be able to find anywhere, at any time. I bought mine, last year this price increase happened very recently. Get one before they become too expensive, or they start using low quality wood, low quality components and plastic parts to try to keep the listed price lower! Don't miss this opportunity to own a stellar, solid-wood, all mahogany, made in the USA acoustic guitar from the premier acoustic guitar maker: C.F. Martin & Company! I am very pleased with mine, and I believe you will love your's as well!

This guitar is a true testament of what you would expect from the Martin guitar company- perfect!

Very nice.

By Dewberry from Arkansas on February 20, 2022

I got a demo version of this guitar and I was kinda skeptical of what it might sound like and I didn't have very high expectations but it really blew me away. Big low end and not too bright. Not a bunch of bells and whistles and it's just kinda plain and roughneck looking and that's what I like. But the sound really surprised me. Definitely a keeper!! I see why it has such high reviews.

Great guitar! Great service!!

I'm just so happy everytime I need any musical gear I can just open the app and 2 days later my order is at my doorstep. Thank you so much guys! Special thank you to Kurt Martin who's my go to guy and is always thete when I need him.

New D15M was harder to play than Taylor 212, liked it but thought I was not up to it. Couldn't let it sit because of the tone, though. After 6 mos old I brought it back for new strings. Went to service counter for installation like I used to in the old store - he strummed it twice, went into the sound hole with a wrench, and put the strings back on the wall! Plays better for me than the Taylor now. Love mine.

Classic Martin Looks and Sound

By Gary Young from Buda, TX on January 25, 2022 Music Background: Lifelong musician and guitar collector.

This guitar represents classic Martin sound from an all mahogany guitar. It takes a little time to get used to the inlays on the fretboard, especially if you're coming from a Gibson or Taylor, but the side markers are still there, so it's pretty easy to adjust after some playing. Other than that, this guitar has a wonderful tone and plays very easily. The neck is thinner than I think they have been when I've played them in guitar stores in the past, and that's a good thing. I would definitely recommend getting a Martin D15M if you're looking for an American made Martin that won't break the bank.

Martin D15

By Matt from Mississippi on January 17, 2022

Very pleased with my purchase of this Martin D15. I had played one a few years ago and was blown away by the tone and full bodied sound it produced. At the time I couldn't afford to purchase it but fast forward a couple years and I decided to pull the trigger on this online purchase and I am extremely glad I did. I play mostly traditional Gospel and older Country Music and this guitar really does these genres well. If you are looking for a guitar with a deep, warm, full bodied sound then this is the guitar to buy.

MARTIN D-15M.....A LEGEND THAT LIVES ON!

By Jon Ruetz from Bryan, Ohio on May 27, 2021 Music Background: lifelong guitar enthusiist and forever student of the guitar

After careful thought we purchased a D-15M for my wife. Great choice! The deep blooming tone so sweet it almost makes me cry! The aromatic mahogany smells so sweet. Top American craftsmanship thru & thru. The neck is superb for my small hands. Everything about this affordably priced USA made guitar is superbly hand crafted. It exceeds all expectation. Now I ordered one for myself! THIS IS THE GUITAR OF MY DREAMS! At the time of this review, the delivery date is possibly two months away.....so I await my turn to own my own Martin D-15 Solid Mahogany acoustic......simply the BEST GUITAR I HAVE EVER HEARD AND HANDLED! Yeah, there are many acoustic guitars: Gibson,Taylor,Yamaha,on and on. They are all wonderful. That said, I will actually consider this D-15M Martin the BEST SOUNDING OF THEM ALL, irregardless of higher price or popularity. Thank you Sweetwater Staff for being so warmly helpful, technically knowledgeable and just downright courteous and understanding. God bless Sweetwater and all the staff for making musical dreams come true in our area of Northwest Ohio and Northeast Indiana.

My buddy has a D-15M and I fell in love with the sound of it. With Alan's help, I ordered this guitar and like always Sweetwater's customer service was outstanding. Ordering went smooth, delivery was fast, and the guitar plays like a dream out of the box. I appreciate Sweetwater's customer service and attention to detail throughout the entire process. Thanks for doing what you do. As for the guitar, it's a Mahogany Martin so I don't know what else to say. For those of you familiar with Martin guitars, it doesn't disappoint. For those of you unfamiliar and you're on the fence, this plays and sounds like an acoustic should. It may be a little more expensive but I saw this as a lifetime guitar that could eventually be handed down. That and psychologically I feel like I play better with better equipment.

Wow

By Sweetwater Customer on February 18, 2021

I can't say enough good things about this guitar. The action and playability are incredible. This guitar is always in tune. In fact I don't think I've ever owned a guitar that stays in tune as well as this one does. And then there's that sound - this guitar has such a beautiful tone and sustain that if you let a note ring out long enough it almost sounds like it starts to feedback on itself. Highly recommended

Wow!!!

BUY THIS GUITAR!!!! For what it's worth I also own a D-18 but pick up and play the D-15M 9 out of 10 times. This guitar sounds awesome and smells even better :). I will never sell this guitar. I set it up with Martin Retro 12's and it sounds and plays awesome. You will not regret buying this guitar. This guitar is Martin's dirty little secret.

MY NEW MARTIN D-15 M

If you are reading this review and if you are a first-time buyer please request Ryan Holquist as your Sweetwater Tech Consultant. Can't say enough about Ryan and Sweetwater is lucky to have him. This is my first Martin Guitar and it won't be the last. The guitar is very comfortable to hold and navigating the neck is very smooth. The low-end is very bold but not blunt and the high end is bright and clear.I'm blown away by the sustain of this guitar.
Don't be turned off by the mahogany top. It holds its own against any Sitka spruce top guitar and I've found the change to very refreshing. I love the hard case as opposed to a gig bag. 5 Stars Baby. I would love to write more but I got to get back to playing this guitar. Thanks, Ryan and Thank you, Sweetwater.
PS No other vendor packages a guitar better than Sweetwater and it only took 2 1/2 days to receive.

Beautiful Looks and Warm Sounds

By David Knight from North Las Vegas, NV on March 26, 2020 Music Background: Serious Hobbyist

This guitar is absolutely gorgeous in person. And the tones are so deep and warm! Everyone that has seen and heard it loves it! One thing to note: The guitar is shipped with the bottom strap button not installed. Martin does this to prevent damage to the guitar body during shipping. I wasn't expecting this. It *can* be tricky installing the button yourself, as it is a very tight fit. Do be careful so that you don't break the guitar yourself. If you're not comfortable with the process, I would suggest having a luthier do it for you. Cheers!

I purchased my Martin D-15M earlier this year. I've now lived with this guitar for 6 months, and it is more wonderful each time I play it. The smell of the mahogany, the Martin history, and that sound! The instrument exudes warmth and soul - it feels alive! With the D-15M, I got everything I had hoped from a Martin. Tad Shaffer, my Sweetwater sales professional, has been exceptional after the sale as well.

Hits you right in the feels...

By Sweetwater Customer on May 11, 2019 Music Background: Middle School Music Teacher

If you want an acoustic guitar with warm, reminds you of home type sound, this is it.

DISCLAIMER/BACKGROUND: I am a public school music teacher who teaches a guitar unit in a middle school general music setting. I am by no means an expert on everything in existence about guitars, all my thoughts are my observations with my own ears from playing my D15M for 3 months.

This was my first real quality guitar purchase. I did a lot of research on what I was looking for, and nervously went with the D-15M despite several incredible options. I have been playing a ton, and it is in part to do with this guitar. I learn more and more about the sounds of different tone woods from playing other guitars and my D15M, and I will say that the all-mahogany Martin really strikes me as something special. It's an extremely rich sound. I was mainly strumming when I first started but I'm getting more into fingerpicking, which in my opinion this thing sounds like a dream on. However, it also sounds amazing strummed. From my minimal experience the spruce topped guitars are more "jangly" and bright and the D15M is (a little) darker and more muffled. Each have their own unique voices.

I would say the only person who could MAYBE be disappointed is someone playing crazy guitar leads/solos up the fret board. It is a much warmer sound so might not be the best for someone expecting something like a Taylor for that kind of thing. But I definitely just say maybe for this because I don't play that style really.

It works great with a variety of open tunings, and sidenote--still smells INCREDIBLE. I love this guitar.

Great first experience with Sweetwater

By Michael from Fairhope, AL on May 7, 2019

I purchased my Martin D-15M from Sweetwater. My first Martin and my first purchase from Sweetwater. Neither disappointed. I'm not a good enough musician to talk about the finer points of this guitar. I'll leave that to others. What I will say is this: This D-15M has a beautiful, warm sound. I loved the smell of this guitar when it came out of the case. I did take it to a professional for a set up. I changed out the strings, had the action lowered, etc. However, there were no flaws with this guitar when it arrived. The packing job was great. I tracked the shipment from the time it left the facility to the time it arrived here. Sweetwater's customer service was great and I would highly recommend anyone giving them a try.

The Martin D-15M is an incredible guitar. Out of the box I was blown away by the simple elegence of it"s design. It plays like a dream and produces a loud rich tone that fills the room. I have wanted an American made Martin for awhile and I am super pleased that I didn"t hold out for the 18. This guitar is the perfect no frills instrument for a front porch picker like me.

When I received my new Martin D-15, I was blown away at how rich the sound is! When I played it in my band, the band members loved the sound also. I was playing with a more expensive guitar before, a Taylor 515, great guitar, but this Martin has something special! A very deep full rich sound. Easy and smooth to play too! Highly recommend this. And using SweetWater was the best route to go. Would go back and purchase again.

So nice...

By Sweetwater Customer on February 9, 2019

I bought a D-15M from Sweetwater about a month ago now (Sweetwater has very good customer service--unusually high-touch.) The D-15M is a terrific guitar, made in the USA. Mine came in a nice hardshell case. It only required a little truss rod adjustment to bring the action down sufficiently. The guitar looks retro in its minimalist design, without the fancy binding of more expensive Martins. But at this price point, for a made in the USA Martin, it's phenomenal. Playing it is a complete sensory experience--it sounds superb, with rich, warm tone, and it smells like a cigar box. It's difficult to put it down. The neck is great, quick, due to the satin finish. High quality materials and construction. Totally worth it--a real keeper.

Fantastic Guitar

By Bill Dixon from Omaha, NE on January 17, 2019 Music Background: Semi-professional

I purchased my D-15M a few months ago and I have a difficult time putting it back in the case. Easy to play and simply amazing sound. I owned a Taylor 414CE for 10 years. It was a great instrument, but it doesn't have the tonal quality or sustain of the D-15M. If you are looking for a great sounding acoustic, this is it. Also want to acknowledge Jozy at Sweetwater for his professionalism and courtesy. Great purchase experience.

Great instrument! Love the simple, minimalist look. Quality construction throughout. Has a warm sound, and even the smell is great! I needed just a little truss rod adjustment. Stays in tune beautifully. A super instrument...a reasonably-priced, made in USA Martin. I"ll pass this one on to my kids someday.

Worth it

By Jessica from Kansas City on August 6, 2018

I've owned several guitars in my life, a few high end Martins and a Taylor.
This guitar definitely has a lot of bang for your buck. You can really dig into it and get a full sound without the muddiness.
From an appearance standpoint, I also love the richness of texture in the wood.
I've led worship at my church for more than 10 years and when I used this one (mine has a pickup), I had a few non-musicians comment on liking the sound (which is pretty unusual).

Sounds as beautiful as it looks.

By Sam from Texas on April 13, 2018 Music Background: Ever-improving amateur.

I"ve been playing guitar for over fifty years and have owned many acoustic guitars during that time, but now I"m the proud owner of a single instrument, the Martin D-15. I"ve had mine for thirteen years now, and the sound of this beautiful guitar simply continues to improve. Gorgeous tone, incredible responsiveness, this guitar has it all. I play fingerstyle exclusively (I don"t even own a pick); from the deep bass notes to the subtlest of finger rolls this guitar produces the sweetest of sounds. A few years ago I took it to a new level and had installed the Fishman Rare Earth soundhole pickup and coupled that with the Fishman Loudbox Artist acoustic combo amp. There"s no limit to what you can do with that combination. But first, get the guitar!

Warm and Sweet

By Michael Dooley from Yankton, SD on March 16, 2018

I recently purchased this guitar and am extremely happy. A week prior I had ordered the DRS1 which is a great solid wood guitar, but there was a magic I was looking for that it just didn"t have. I could go on about what led me to try again and brought me to the D-15M, but I"ll skip the story. Bottom line is this guitar is the best sounding guitar I have ever played let alone even able to call my own. I love the warm and sweet tone that the all mahogany build brings to life. The design is simple and not gaudy like some guitars tend to be. The vintage style open back tuners have such a cool look. The Indian rosewood fingerboard and bridge pair beautifully with the look of the dark mahogany. I just can"t stop strumming chords on this guitar because the sound and feel are addicting. I kept the DRS1 as it will be perfect for playing out, taking places or should I need to plug it in, but this is "the one". Couldn"t be happier. Oh, and the smell!

Martin D-15M

By Tim from Ada, MI on December 9, 2017 Music Background: Hobbyist

This guitar is fantastic! I have been playing a Mitchell acoustic for the past 6 years and decided to upgrade. I did a lot of research into other Martin and Taylor guitars but didn't fall in love with them when I tried them out in person, then I picked up the D-15M at a local dealer and was blown away instantly! The sound is beautiful, well-balanced, and clear, the playability is so much easier than my other guitar, and it's easy on the eyes! Also, the hardshell case that comes with it is sturdy and fits the guitar like a glove. The price was a bit higher than the original range I was shopping in, but all considered I think it's worth at least as much as I payed and I would gladly do it again. Although the demo I tried at a local dealer was great, I trusted Sweetwater would give me the best service as they have before. Thanks to Cassie for her excellent assistance! Thanks to Martin for such a great guitar!

Never buying another acoustic again

By Kurt from Pittsburgh on October 31, 2017

...provided nothing terrible happens to this one. And then I'll just go out and get the exact same model!

Yes, the D-15M is that good. I've had it for almost a month and I play it pretty much every day. I've been playing for over 20 years; my first acoustic was an Oscar Schmidt; second was an Epiphone. And I also have an entry level Fender I bought for 80 quid in London. So I've jumped around a bit and finally decided it was time to Move On Up.

I really like 'natural' looking guitars and this piece is beautiful. The mahogany set in an exquisite satin finish; the spicy/woodsy scent that emanates from the acoustic while I'm playing it - it's perfect! Everything from the wood grain finish to the fretboard inlays is tasteful. As far as sound, it's very intuitive. I've found fingerpicking to be easy and if you're someone who comes from the punk rock school of acoustic playing like I do (meaning, you're not afraid to lay into it for maximum volume) it can handle that too. A guy I sold an amp to played some jazz standards on it for a bit and loved it. A truly remarkable and well-rounded instrument comfortable with many genres.

If you like a bunch of shiny stuff on your guitar, this probably isn't the axe for you. But if you prefer things simple and effective, with quality materials constructed right here in the good old commonwealth of Pennsylvania, this Martin is for you.

I never understood....

By Jerry from Arizona on July 9, 2017 Music Background: Casual amateur

....the hype surrounding Martin guitars. Lordy, I do now! I've never played a guitar with such a big, clear voice. It's light as a feather (well, almost) which surprised me in a good way. If you like Americana music, please do yourself a favor and get a Martin. You won't regret it.

Better than I thought. It's a real Martin.

By Nick Stabile from New Jersey on March 29, 2017 Music Background: Cover band in local bars.

This is my first all solid wood guitar, and my first Martin. This makes my Alvarez sound like a toy. I am not kidding. I knew my Alvarez was an affordable guitar with a plastic nut and saddle, and it served its purpose. The Martin D-15 just makes incomparable sounds. It resonates, and sings in a way that makes me feel like I never understood acoustics until I owned my own.

I have played high end acoustics in stores, but I have never brought one home. Playing this guitar in the place I play every day has totally changed my appreciation for this instruments. The D-15 sounds wonderful, it has a great blend of bass and mids. It doesn't ring like a Taylor and it doesn't quite have that Sitka Spruce sound, it is definitely more mellow. It works great for singing along with and offers great bass accompaniment.

I cannot recommend this guitar and Martin guitars enough. It's my first real acoustic, I've been playing for 13 years and this makes me feel happy every time I play it.

Hard to beat a a D15M

By Cibby from North East on September 22, 2016 Music Background: Played guitar for 50 years

For the price the D 15M is hard to beat in the Martin line up. I have a D28 and a D18 Standard series Martin's costing nearly $1000 more than a D15M and the D15M holds its own against these Standard series gems. The sound is incredible dry and woody with a powerful base and strong trebles. Both my D18 and D28 took some work to get them where I wanted by that I mean a set up for my personal playing style. Not the D15M I took it out of the case and tuned it and everything I like was there. It has the bass for bluegrass I like the trebles and high end I like for 1960's folk It plays fast and easy it's nice and light maybe not as loud as the D18 or D28 but the sound is the best. At one time I thought I had to spend more to get a real Martin but that's not true not with the D15M if I could only keep one guitar it would be the D15M.

unbelievable

By Steven K Lasley from Virginia on June 17, 2016

I've played many of guitars, but the sound of this one is amazing. I played a Washburn d31s for years but it can't touch this Martin. My friends have Martin d35s, d28s and hd28s. And my d15m blows them away. It's just a great sounding guitar. I don't understand why someone would spend thousands of dollars on a guitar when you can have the best sounding Martin for less than fifteen hundred. Well worth the money. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

My Martin D-15M

By Kevin from Providence, RI on March 4, 2016

Of all the factors I took into consideration when searching for my first all-solid-wood guitar, tone was always king.
Finding just the right acoustic tone is a very personal thing. It’s different for everybody and often hard to describe, but we know it - and feel it - when we hear it.

I played a lot of guitars in my long search but always gravitated back toward the Martin D-15M. Its lush full sound, long sustain and perfectly balanced tone really resonated with me (literally). It’s the sound that my brain wants to hear when I strum an open chord or pick a note. Warm and balanced, focused and darkly sweet with that beautiful deep Martin base, clear highs and just a touch of growl. This guitar called my name from the beginning and while I kept an open mind and played many, many others, nothing connected with me quite like this Martin hog top.

I love the look and feel of this guitar too. A comfortable playable neck profile, and a flawless lightweight build and bracing that lets you feel the musical vibrations in your chest which only adds to the one-on-one connection this guitar makes. There’s also something Zen-like in the D-15M’s stripped down simplicity, satin smoothness and rich solid mahogany that really pulls you in. I can’t say enough about the vibe this guitar throws off. It’s got major mojo especially when playing in what seems to be its native tongue - the blues, and that suits me just fine.

Needless to say, I’m very satisfied with my choice. It’s a lifelong keeper.

Kudos to Sweetwater Sound too. I felt confident in ordering the D-15M online because every single one I ever played at various music stores felt and sounded consistently great – I never found a dud. The only variables would have been looks - things like grain pattern, book matching and shading, etc. Sweetwater puts those worries to rest by displaying multiple angled pictures of its guitars by serial number. You order the exact guitar you see in the pictures. I wouldn’t have ordered a guitar online if it were not for Sweetwater.

Wow

This guitar is amazing. Most likely one to go up in value over the years but I'll never sell... I own a taylor 410ce as well and I love my taylor but the d15m has completely blown me away.. My fingers hurt because I can't put it down.... Sweetwater was great as always. If you're on the fence about this guitar don't be..... Excellent sound and tone.... I would say speechless but I just wrote this.

Chaplain/Pastor

By Jeff from Wlliamsport, MD on December 21, 2015 Music Background: I play guitar in a Continuing Care Retirement Community and I also play in a band.

I have favored Taylor guitars for many years. During the past two years I have been exploring the purchase of a Martin guitar. I played the "high end" Martins and I seriously considered the D 28. I had heard favorable comments about the D 15M. I played one and I really liked the sound of this guitar.
We all have different preferences/tastes in guitars. I feel that the D 15 M is the best acoustic guitar for me. I am very satisfied with this guitar.

So Perfect I Could Cry

By Robert from Utah on November 16, 2015 Music Background: Been in many bands. Currently singer/songwriter/hobbyist

I've tried out many guitars in my life. I travel once a month for work and always hit up an available Guitar Center wherever I go. I've played a Gibson J-45 and Hummingbird as well as countless Taylors and several highest-end Martins.

The D-15m wins.

This acoustic's tonal balance is spotless. With every strum, I bear rich trebles, ocean-deep basses, and more-than-perfect resonance and projection. It will be my go-to guitar til I die or my hands fall off, and even then, I'd pound the strings with my nubs just to get that sound again. It changed my songwriting, opening it up so many more creative avenues because of its versatility. It added on immensely to the joy that guitar playing was already bringing me. This guitar is a gem from a group of geniuses. There is a reason Martin has the reputation it has.

I did not buy this from Sweetwater (I bougjt it a year ago before becoming too familiar with Sweetwater)but I did recently buy an Epiphone Dove Pro from them (for which my review has also been written), and if I had the time, I would write positive reviews for every piece of gear they sell solely to thank them for how amazing they are as a company. They do everything perfectly.

Martin D-15M

By Chuck from South Carolina on August 22, 2015

I have the lefty version of this guitar. I originally found this guitar in a shop that has guitars for leftys in Texas. I spent a couple of hours there and compared many Taylors, Gibsons and other Martins. I had always thought the Gibson J-200 would be the holly grail for me. I was wrong. It turned out to be the D-15. Good thing too cause the J-200 was about $4000. The D-15 is almost a1/4 of that. I happened to find one again and was able to compare it to a D-28. To me the D-15 had it beat. I didn't pass up the opportunity this time. I also own a Takamine EF341, a Seagull 12 string and a Guild GAD50 (my beater). I love my Takamine but this Martin is incredible.

Amazing Tone How Sweet The Sound!

By JET from USA on February 4, 2015 Music Background: Singer/Songwriter, Musician, Recording Artist

I have always wanted this model but somehow I ended up buying something else. When I finally pulled the trigger, I could hardly wait for this beauty to arrive!!! It was shipped lightening fast! Sweetwater's customer service is excellent and their instruments are top shelf, bar none. Thank you so much Brandon Eden.

I have had sitka/rosewood, and sitka/mohagany guitars, but never a solid mahogany. Honestly, this guitar has by far surpassed my expectations!!!! The tone is sweet, warm, and articulate. It has beautiful resonant bass and, the sound is better than many guitars twice the price. Martin guitars are some of the finest. They have maintained their high standards and they are still made in America. Every player should have one of these. The simple elegance and playability is captivating. This one is a keeper and easily one of my favorites.

Fan-Freaking Tastic

By Sweetwater Customer on December 4, 2014 Music Background: Sound Engineer, Pro Musician, Professional Slacker

This guitar is exactly what I wanted. Not to mellow, not to harsh, not too much treble, a good amount of Bass. The tone is perfect for what I want. I wanted a guitar with some character, it has a great solid sound across the strings, very even but yet with a sense of raw tone and mellowness all combined that make this guitar very diverse. I have been playing music for 20 years, I've owned many guitars from Les Pauls, Paul Reed Smith, various Acoustics, so I consider my opinion to be pretty solid. I played various Taylors before buying this guitar, and for me it fit quite well. It may not be for everyone, I personally loved the Martin D18, it sounded so perfect, so if this one isn't for you the D18 most likely will be.

Outstanding Guitar

By Ken H from Lancaster, CA on December 1, 2014 Music Background: Hobbyist, everyday player

This guitar is absolutely unbelievable! I love the punchy lows with the pronounced mid range, all around warm tone. This guitar has lots of volume, I love it! If your thinking of buying this, do it! you wont be disappointed. For the past year I have been shuffling around my guitar stock, this one is terrific addition, and a keeper.
Also want to thank Sweetwater, and my Sales Engineer Ryan Wiltermood.
Ryan provides me with the best service I have EVER seen in this industry, all others for that matter!! Ryan has cemented my loyalty to Sweetwater, its the only company I will ever do business with again, and has been for a few years.
Ryan is extremely patient, knowledgeable, friendly and bends over backwards. Thank you so much Ryan and Sweetwater, you all are the best.
Dont worry for a second about buying a guitar online from Sweetwater, just do it!

Best guitar I own, period

By David Woodard from Clinton, ME on May 17, 2014 Music Background: Hobbyist, aspiring musician

I bought this almost a month ago, wanting to upgrade from my first acoustic, a very nice Yamaha.
After doing research and speaking with my sales rep Ryan Holquist, I decided to purchase this one and he even gave me a great deal.
I have to tell you, it is far more guitar than I expected, WOW.
It looks great, smells great, feels VERY light and comfortable and plays like no other guitar I own. I was playing mostly electrics, that has changed. I can't keep my hands off this.
I have a friend who is mentoring me, he's played for 30 years and he was so impressed with this. He owns a very expensive Gibson and this is at least an equal to his.
I will never say this about my electrics as I own many but this is my last acoustic guitar. I will not and see no reason to ever need an upgrade. As far as I am concerned this is as good as it gets.
I have already played my first gig with this and it's all I've played since.
I can not imagine a sweeter sound coming from a guitar. It is very mellow. The highs ring nicely and lows resonate nicely, tone is perfect. The action is nice as well. The only change I've made was to put lighter strings on it, just a personal preference as mediums were stock on this.
If you have any doubt about this guitar because of it's price, DON'T. You will be making a mistake by not considering this. It's simple yet perfect. I have been told it will only improve with age but can't imagine. I love it just the way it is.
Thank you Ryan for your great customer service, as always. I will Never purchase a guitar or equipment elsewhere.

By Jerry W from Madison, AL on February 27, 2014 Music Background: Vocalist and guitar hobbyist

I bought my D-15M last year after looking at a lot of different guitars for some time. This guitar sounds amazing, action and neck are great, and it's 100% mahogany. Bone nut & saddle are standard. Although not ornately appointed, this guitar looks good and smells wonderfull! I would highly suggest this for someone wanting American made Martin quality at an affordable price. Sure to become a Martin classic.

Great All Hog Acoustic from Martin

By Jim Reeves from Claude, TX on October 14, 2021 Music Background: Play in church. Been playing for 11 years, this time around.

This D-15M is a great, all mahogany dreadnaught that really sings. It is lightweight, more so than most acoustics. It resonates freely and sounds beautiful strummed or played finger-style. It's got Martin's legendary quality in both materials used and build quality. This guitar doesn't have a flaw anywhere I can see. Being all solid mahogany, including the top, it has a darker tone than the spruce-mahogany guitars that are more prevalent. This is great by itself but it's even better when you add it to your arsenal, in order to expand the range of tone for all the music you may play. It's great for Blues, Rock, Country and all Root music like Americana and Folk. The only thing I do not care for is the narrower nut width of
1 and 11/16ths inches vs. 1 and 3/4 inch nut width that is becoming the norm. Some folks prefer this size and this would be perfect for them. The hard shell case is simple, but adequate to protect this guitar. This is one of Martin's true bargains. You will be hard pressed to find a better guitar at this price point. I love it and I am glad I have it. I find myself playing this D-15 as much as any of my other top-shelf guitars (Martin D-28, Gibson Songwriter, Taylor Koa) and more than my other more affordable guitars. I highly recommend this guitar. If you have not played an all mahogany guitar, then you owe it to yourself to try this one.

It's a winner for me.

By Dale Anderson from Cherokee Village, AR on July 1, 2018

Played a lot of guitars looking for the perfect one like everyone else. This isn't perfect but it's so close I'm not sure I could tell the difference. I've had it about 2 years and it's still has a better sound than anything else I've tried. This is better. You could say it's a $5000 guitar without all the trimmings that do nothing for sound. If you don't know it yet, the expensive guitars aren't any better, quality of wood, construction, etc., they are just fancier. And the smell is lovely. This will not be sold by me.

Martin D15

By Mike on July 10, 2017

I owned a Taylor 810 for 25 years before I picked up this guitar. Suddenly I was using words like "warm and "organic" to describe tone. Words I definitely didn't use for the Taylor. I bought it on the spot and have been a Martin guy ever since. Sold the Taylor - it was still a great guitar but it simply didn't speak to me like this D15 did. I realize tone is a very personal thing. I simply encourage you to give this guitar a try - you'll be very happy you did. It's not really the best for leads during a jam but it holds it own fantastically as a strummer. It's lack of a really sparkly high end is not a detriment but is actually part of its appeal. You can really pound it if you want and it never craps out (Can't say the same for the Taylor) I get loads of great comments from other players on the sound. Since that time I have bought a D18 and a 000-18 as well. I love mahogany I guess!

Great Guitar

By Nathan Joseph Standage from Lehi, UT USA on July 31, 2014 Music Background: Recording Engineer, Student,

I had been looking for a guitar that wasn't super bright, but all the ones I tried just weren't cutting it. I really love the artist City and Colour and the guitar he plays is all mahogany, so I thought I'd look at some similar models. I ended up debating between the Taylor 320 (with a mahogany top) and the Martin D-15M. I tested both and fell in love with the Martin. To me the tone was richer, and it had way more character to it. This guitar is distinct. It has a very raw, warm sound. I love the vintage, minimalistic look too. If you're looking for a pristine guitar sound with sparkly top end, this isn't your guitar. This guitar is more raw, earthy (if that makes sense…) and rich sounding.
Overall I'm super happy with the purchase. Sweetwater did a great job getting it too me fast and in perfect condition.

D-15m

By Scott Watson on July 26, 2015

I originally ordered a 00-15m and wasn't happy with it. So with sweet waters great return policy it went back and I chose the d-15m and that was the correct choice for me. It has a softer, but we'll balanced sound vs my hd28v or 16gt. It has a beautiful ring and sustain with a nice proportional bass note. It has a nicer richer finish than my 000-15m burst which seems slightly less glossy. So to finish, this is a beautiful looking and sounding guitar very pleased!

Martin D15M

By Andy from Morristown, NJ on October 6, 2022

Nice guitar, but I find the sound a little too "soft" (muddy). I know the mahogony sound emphasized midrange, but I wish it was a little brighter. I have a Yamaha FG850 (also mahogany and $1,000 cheaper) which, in my opinion, has better sound and also plays easier. For me, the D15M is best suited for finger picking.

it developed a buzz even though i have two humidifiers in the case.

By david garcia from CA on March 8, 2020

I'm not sure if its just me or i got a lemon but when i was restringing the guitar the entire instrument was groaning and creaking loudly, iv never experienced that and i was very concerned with the bridge flying off i even used a lighter gauge string. im not sure if i like or dislike but for $... you'd think you'd love it out of the box, the sweet water experience was awesome, although for my first martin im disappointed.
