Just Right

By Big Shorty from Los Angeles on August 17, 2023 Music Background: Harmonica, Slide Guitar, Blues

I needed an Amp to be more versatile than to be just a practice amp and possible future busking. This amp fulfills many options for use like being a remote outside boom box when connected to my iPhone, or a two mic karaoke machine, or a compact all in one guitar, mic, harmonica and backing track amp. The 50 watts, powered by 8 -AA batteries or a AC power brick cord adds to the options of being a fixed connected to a plug amp or fill the world with sound unconnected to a plug amp! FX controls are adequate and a nice plus. There is even a pedal accessory port for adding FX. Did I leave anything out? oh yeah, Line out jack to record your magic. All in All , great job on a great balance of many options Roland. Not to heavy to carry, nicely built. Really Really pleased with my purchase.

Roland cube ex

By Sweetwater Customer on June 13, 2023

Great sounding amp vocals are very clean plenty loud enough

Just get it !

By Busking Betty from Boston on May 24, 2023 Music Background: Professional

Gigged/busked with the smaller older model Streetcube for many years. Still works great and is in very good condition. When I bought my Streetcube the EX model didn't exist so that tells ya how long I've had that little workhorse ! Before getting the Streetcube EX , I did try the new Streetcube 2 model. It's basically an over priced toy. Sounds terrible IMO. So that was crossed off the list.

Not impressed with any of the digital crap, blue tooth, runs via your phone, small, hard to read screens on amps or PA's. Had that and found them problematic for live gigs. Prefer knobs I can see and adjust manually. Didn't want anything with a rechargeable battery either.

Kept looking at the Streetcube EX on Sweetwater's website (no one in my area had one to try out) and finally pulled the trigger. SO happy I did ! ! After tweaking a bit I was NOT DISAPPOINTED one bit. Sounds awesome, nice clarity, and extra boost in volume when needed......AND LIGHT Weight ! ! ! The EX can get pretty loud and doubt I'd ever need to use full volume on the small/medium gigs I play. The sound travels nicely and does not distort.
Runs on 8 double A batteries or AC (adapter is included). Very easy to replace batteries on a gig when no AC is available.

Sure hope Roland/Boss keeps making this model Streetcube EX available. It just works ! If you're a solo musician, it'sall you'll need for small/medium venues. I did get the bag for the EX. Have one for my smaller/older cube. They are a little pricey for what they are, however, comes in handy on those pop up summer showers. Flip & zip the cover. No wet damaged amp and the strap makes it easy to carry.

Sure hope Roland/Boss continues making the Street Cube EX available. It's the very best light weight, battery powered amp (IMO).

Very Good All-Purpose Amp

By Jacob Dewar from Chicago, IL on November 30, 2022

I primarily play electric guitar in the studio, but needed a reliable amp that wasn't too bulky or heavy. The clean settings on this amp sound very good and handles FX pedals well. The overdrive and distortion settings aren't my favorite but if you're using pedals or playing clean acoustic or electric this amp will get the job done. Having multiple inputs available for vocals, keys, guitar and backing tracks is useful too in rehearsal and performance situations. Batteries drain pretty quickly but if you're playing plugged in, this is obviously not an issue. There are no gain knobs on here FYI, just volume. That might bother some people but wasn't a deal breaker for me. If you're looking for one all-purpose amp I don't think you can go wrong here. Side note: Don't buy the cover that supposedly goes with it, that thing is way overpriced and flimsy.

Wonderful customer service

By Sweetwater Customer on July 28, 2022

I am an outdoor yoga teacher and have been looking for a speaker that can play low sustained tones and still sound good. I am delighted that this one can. I originally ordered a different speaker, when that speaker didn't work for my needs, Sweetwater was wonderful in replacing the speaker with this one. Thank you, David and Sweetwater for terrific customer service.

By Mark Fornwald from Chester, CT on June 8, 2022

Ordered St.Patty's Day 2022. Also picked up a 24pk of AA batteries. Last 8 batteries installed Thursday before Mem.Day. Primarily personal use, Parks, camping, backyards. Set on Low power at half volume is fine for me. The "Baby Box" pales in the shadow of my AC90. BUT...at nearfield (15'or less) you should be one happy kampur.
Full tilt is nice but I would patch into the PA for posterior coverage.
I started playing guitar in 1965, been a soundman & recording engineer, now retired, this little amp makes the old fart smile.

Amazing sound, amazing value!

By Jeremy Lieb from St. Louis, MO on January 3, 2022

I've purchased a LOT of amps, monitors and speakers over the 30 years I've played guitar. Simply put, it'd be reeeeally hard to find a better value than the Roland Cube Street EX amp. It has everything a solo musician could ask for--effects for both an acoustic AND electric guitar, tons of punch, and plenty of volume AND clarity for only being a 50 watt amp. In addition, you can plug it in to power, or use batteries.

Incredibly good purchase, and another great experience working with Jerrod, my sales engineer. (Super good guy)

Thanks again!

The Cube

Roland Street Cube EX.

By Thomas Gangwer from MI on November 23, 2021 Music Background: Self taught guitar and vocals. Christian Praise and Worship

I just purchased the Roland Street Cube EX from Sweetwater and so far I love it. My friends and I are playing guitars through it and it sounds awesome for something weighing only 16 pounds. I haven't tried a mic through it yet but I'm sure it will be as good as the guitar sounds.im looking forward to using it outside for outreach ministry. I give this unit and Sweetwater's service 5 stars..

A Proven Performer

By Bill Barnes from Hope, Maine on October 18, 2021 Music Background: Professional jazz-blues-funk guitarist

Last spring I had purchased this CUBE from Sweetwater, not sure if the $525 price tag was justified. There were other lightweight "practice amps" available for much less money. But, at around 16 pounds, this 50-watt, versatile unit proved to be worth its weight in gold.

Built like a tank, and with two strategically-placed carry handles, it can take on just about any playing environment. Plus, the built-in extras such as digital delay, chorus and reverb are not only convenient, they actually sound good. And there's plenty of volume and rich tones to be had. On top of all that, with 8 AA batteries, you don't even need an AC power source!

I use this to practice with at home but it really paid for itself this summer, on a series of lucrative gigs I had backing up a singer on a mega yacht anchored off the Maine coast, accessible only by a Zodiac Tender. I can't imagine hauling my 50+ pound Fender Hotrod Deville on and off an inflatable. The CUBE delivered fat tones and substantial volume. I now use this as a P.A. for a vocal mic on my jazz trio gigs and it works fine for that as well.

After months of use, this little amp checked all the boxes.

My favorite of all my acoustic amps

By John Franklin from Los Angeles on August 12, 2021

I have no shortage of acoustic amps: Fishman Loudbox, Fishman Performer, a heavy Hartke, and this Cube. The cube is my favorite because I love what it does for the sound of my guitar AND my vocal. I have a chain of pedals that I don't need for this amp because the sound is so good. I also use a Boss VE-8 for my vocals; but, not with this amp. I love equipment that makes me sound better than I am! I see the price has gone up a bit from when I bought it awhile back.

I DO have two "wishes" (complaints...). First, the battery thing. It sucks up power like a South American dictator. It should be a plug in to charge like a phone. I realize that would add a bit of weight, but it would be worth it.

Second, I wish mine had an "out" plug to go, for example, to a board or such. Mine has no out at all. It looks like the new one DOES have an "out" 1/4 plug. Something about linking other Cubes; but, I assume it would also go to a board.

Anyway, it is NOT powerful. I think the specs say 50 watts. But, the sound? My favorite amp. If it came in 200 watts, I would instantly own one more amp. Just what I need....

I am giving it 5 stars. The way it eats batteries deserves to lose half a star. Also, no out deserves to lose half a star, but they have now, apparently, added an out. But, its sound is too good to not give a perfect five. Just be sure to play one to see if it has enough power for you.

I love the cube... it's everything advertised !

By Dale Bonamie from GRAYLING, MI on July 16, 2021

I recommend this. I look forward to trying it out on battery power in the middle of the woods to hear it echo off the hills!

I read the Manuel , a quick easy set up I did it on my kitchen island counter ( , see the pic below ) I was blown away by the sound I set it on the lowest setting ,this amp is loud , in the pic I pluged almost everything I have into it , guitar keyboards ,mic Sure Fireball Harmonica , even a Yamaha mixer
It was flawless , I would recommend buying 2 sets of recharable batteries ,unless you plan to run it off AC

This is the best

By Jedediah Reynaud from Provo, UT on August 19, 2020

This amp is awesome... I've used it solo and it has been perfect for those gigs but the best part is when I play with my band it's been used as part of our PA or as an amp for whatever guitar we needed. I'm not a technical person but this thing is crazy easy to use and you won't be disappointed owning it

Excellent sound and capability

By Phil from Painesville, Ohio on August 14, 2020 Music Background: Performing paying gigs.

I had purchased a CUBE Street EX for practice and gigs, and soon afterward purchased a second identical unit due to the excellent quality and sound. I link the two together for a stereo effect. Love the fact that you can run these on battery power. I purchased rechargeable batteries and it works very well, saving set-up / take down time. Highly recommend this product. !

The answer is "NO!!"

By Craig Ledford from North Carolina on May 6, 2020 Music Background: Praise and Worship Leader with JC,& Company

I know that this will make my third review of this portable AC/battery operated sound system. Before the Coronavirus, I was averaging two praise and worship concerts per week. This unit has always been rock-solid! Today, I decided to check at Sweetwater and see if anyone has come out with anything that even compares to this unit regarding portability and power. In my opinion, the answer is "no!" Before you pass up the opportunity to own one of these units, think twice. You will not regret your purchase. Out of the different systems that I have available for different size venues, this unit is used at least 90% of the time.

Outstanding, Versatile Amp

Love my Roland Street EX

By Mike Fox from Indiana and Florida on December 12, 2019

I have been using StreetEx for smallish gigs and busking. Don't forget, this baby has a sweet audio out. For larger gigs I hook the audio out to my Turbosound skinny stick/sub system. This gives me vocal EFX, guitar EFX, personal monitor from Cube, extra crowd coverage from placement of Cube EX. All with one trip carry in!

Incredible Amp

By Thomas Stanford from Baton Rouge Louisiana on November 13, 2019 Music Background: More than 35 years playing music.

This amp is really amazing. I especially like the fact that you can choose from three different power levels. The sound is very clear no matter what hours you have selected. I practice on the lowest power level to conserve the batteries. If I am performing indoors I usually use the middle power level. But I have a busking location downtown where I use the full power level and people can hear me from blocks away. My corner often turns into a huge block party. All from one amp.

Versatile with Great Sound and Portability

By Vern from North Carolina on September 16, 2019 Music Background: Singer/Songwriter

The Roland Cube Street EX is very versatile with its multiple inputs and outputs you can use it to record, do small venue performances, street performances and with convenient headphone jack you can practice without disturbing others in you home or studio! You are only limited by your own lack of imagination. This a purchase you won"t regret making!

i'm 64 and a daily guitar player. guitars and amps? far too many. i've dreamed of JUST THIS PUPPY cuz i like to have spontaneous fun. grab 2 mics, a guitar or 2, a little keyboard, some shakers/kazoos/tambourines/slide whistles/whatever, and you've got the best Corona ad ever made. this is the total balls. also grab a sleeve of AAs and you're good for all day and night and more.

Outstanding Audio Unit

By Craig W. Ledford from Mooresboro on June 7, 2019 Music Background: Praise & Worship Leader/Songwriter/Audio Tech

I work with the ministry JC & Company. I needed to condense my audio set-up for small venues. Often times, it's not just about the smaller crowd/smaller room. It is about space to set up the equipment! This unit is awesome. Used in combination with the Mackie SRM150, I have a complete small package system that will even do larger venues when needed. Now, I can fit the type of audio system needed with the venue at hand. I use an iPad, acoustic guitar, and do vocals through this unit and it does NOT distort. The onboard effects are outstanding. Please read my review on the Mackie SRM150 for more information regarding how these two units compliment each other. I am using the Mackie as a monitor. The audio projection of this combination system, has definitely satisfied my needs for a smaller set-up. In fact, this combination now goes on the road more that my larger set-ups!

Great portable PA/ Amp

By Sweetwater Customer from SF Bay Area on May 31, 2019 Music Background: Mostly Recreational Player. Occasional small gigs

Bought this amp about a year ago. Played with it primarily inside. Now have had a chance to take it outside turned up and played acoustic guitar, electric guitar and vocals for a couple hundred people. No problem for a small to mid size venue for a solo artist. So impressed, that I just bought a second one to link them together and play with another guitarist, vocalist. For a battery powered amp it"s very surprising how well it sounds.

Taokab

By Taokab Wilson from MS on February 7, 2019 Music Background: 45 years

This thing is really good. Loud, clear, good distortion. You know its in the room. Placed it in the gym at work. Rings like a bell. Of course a crowd would soak up the sound. But this is really a good clean, although pricey amp. Love it. I use it along with a Monster boom box playing the backing tracks and filter a little into the cube aux input. Super sound. Clear vocal. All portable. And the BBox brings up the bass and doesnt interfere with the vocals. But by itself it does the job well. Its really all you need, but I,m a sound junky. Hard to believe 8 double A's can get this kind of a sound, but it does. You will notice that the sound gets fatter with the increase in power switch. Yeah I like full power, but the lower settings are also good. Its just that I like big leg women.

Powerful Punch In A Small Package

By Craig W. Ledford from North Carolina on November 16, 2018 Music Background: Praise & Worship Leader/Gospel Singer/Songwriter

I am a praise and worship leader with the ministry JC & Company. I am blessed with at least two praise and worship opportunities per week. Venues range from small (local restaurant), to festivals with over 15,000 people. The programs last from one to three hours and require different audio setups to meet the needs of the venue. I debated on this portable PA for many months. After watching many You Tube videos, I decided to make the purchase.

The unit arrived yesterday. When I powered up the unit and began rehearsing the songs for an upcoming program, I couldn't stop being amazed! In fact, before I knew it, three hours had passed by!

I use backing tracks, some produced in the studio and some that I purchase. Also, I play acoustic guitar with the tracks. Harmonies are created with the TC Helicon Play Acoustic and the TC Helicon Harmony Singer.

The audio output is impressive. It will work well with small venues allowing for faster setups and tear downs. I believe that this unit will actually be suitable for some smaller church settings.

I am totally satisfied with this unit and its performance has exceeded my expectations!

CUBE Street EX ROCKS!

By Ken Rothacker from IL on October 3, 2018 Music Background: Nylon string acoustic, classical

I would describe myself as "Very Satisfied" with the CUBE Street EX, and have used in many performances.
I primarily play solo nylon string guitar, sometimes with vocals, sometimes with another instrument.

This amp (or more properly, "Portable PA") sounds great, and has plenty of volume and coverage.
I have played for outdoor weddings with 175 or more guests, and the Roland was more than up to the task..
When using both combo xlr inputs for mic's or other instruments, I have plugged my Godin into one of the line inputs, included a battery powered reverb pedal, and gotten excellent results.
BTW - get the carrying case. Just do it.
While I don't perform a lot of electric guitar, the sounds, effects, and options are fine.
Having the Roland has meant that I use heavier, more cumbersome PA gear substantially less.
Being able to walk into a solo gig with the Roland over one shoulder, and the guitar over the other is wonderful.

Small - Powerful - Long Lasting - Cube Street EX

By Pete Simms from Florida on March 10, 2018 Music Background: Guitarist

I just purchased my 2nd one. I play solo instrumental nylon guitar for private dinners, cocktail parties and wedding ceremonies. I've used only one of these for up to 200 for loud cocktail parties outside. It works like a charm. I ordered my 2nd for larger events (using only two for up to 300). I can't say enough good things about it. It is a bit pricey ... but you get what you paid for.

Cube Street EX

By Chuck from Norcal on January 11, 2018

Great lightweight, portable, battery powered amp. Just what I wanted for taking in my jeep and heading out to a jam or playing solo in the woods or near the lake. C'mon, 50 watts is phenominal for a small amp that soundS BIG and you have the versatility to back that off with the eco switch to save battery power. I dig it the most!

The Cube EX

By Tomas Pagan from Weaverville, NC on December 3, 2017

This amp is a champ. Love it, sounds great and more than enough power for a portable battery amp.
Nevertheless; the electrical power option make it even better. You will not regret buying this cube . I believe it will out perform a lot of small amps if it put to the test. Sound is clear and has a lot applications in which can be use . Last the customer support team is great such as they have a strong grasp in their selling products.

Simply Awesome

By Jam Handy from Dallas, Texas on May 3, 2017

I am an electric guitar player who plays solo blues and jazz. I only use the "Clean" setting on the COSM Amplifier section. I can run any kind of stomp box into this amp with excellent results. The revebr and chorus are very very good. The chorus is so good it has inspired me to write several songs just because the chours sounds so good... but thus, it's a Roland chorus. The delay isn't very useful, but I have a TC Electronic Flashback delay I love, so I don't need the delay. This 50 watt amp is as loud as I need for practicing and for small gigs. It is nice that is has a speaker stand mounting hole on one end. When I bought mine, I bought all the accessories that were out at the time. I got two of the BOSS FS-7 footswitches, and the Roland CB-CS2 carry bag. The amp fits really nice in the carry bag. I already had a speaker stand, but even a very inexpensive speaker stand will work with this amp as it is very light (only 16lbs... its a feather compared to other amps I've had to lug around...). WELL WORTH the price... and... when I got mine the price was higher, so I plan to buy another soon. Kudos to Roland for this particular model. Its been one of my all-time favorite amps. No matter what electric guitar I plug into it, ti sounds great, be it a Les Paul Traditional Pro mII, and Eric Johnson Stratocaster, or even my National Resolectric. The clean channel is to kill for but all the other amp settings on the COSM knob are pretty useless to me. Like I said, I play clean solo blues and jazz, and this works great. It also sounds great with backing tracks. All I need is this one amp and I'm done. Thanks Roland !!!!!

Awesome Amp

By Doug Rupe from Astoria, OR on January 13, 2017 Music Background: Self taught professional

Received my new amp today. My wife and I did a practice session on it before I wrote this review. It is truly awesome. I first played my 46 year old classical through it. It sounded great. I then played my new Ibanez AS153 through it; again awesome.

Had my wife sing some jazz songs through it while I played for her. Yes, it is in my house but if I turned it up more then halfway it would blow us out. The sounds are absolutely clean and quiet unless you choose to add something in.

Anyone looking to buy a good amp for busking and/or small to medium venues this is really good. BE AWARE, even though the description of this amp does not say; it DOES come with a power supply. No need to buy a separate supply.

Again, my friend Chris Kress at Sweetwater did a stellar job. He has kept me informed every step of the way for the products I have bought so far.

You gotta check this thing out.

By CSH on October 25, 2016

If your a solo artist, are a singer with a buddy on guitar or keyboards, you will absouloutly knock it outta the park with this thing. Wow. Quality is all I hear. Used it for a small outdoor show it worked perfect. Bought the rain prof cover was a must have. Also set up in my own house before show. Friends came over and was throughly impressed that it was so loud and clear. I can guarantee 2 of my friends were so bowled over they are buying one. Don't expect earth shattering low end. Very balanced sound. Nothing overpowers anything.

Surprised the heck out of me

By Sweetwater Customer from Cleveland on September 29, 2016 Music Background: Playing 50+ years, guitar teacher for 20+

So, I read all the reviews here and elsewhere and couldn't help but think, "OK, it might be ok but it couldn't be really as good as this, can it?" Yes. Yes, it can. Is.

We all know Roland makes high-quality products and this is NO exception. To put it in a 16 lb package is truly nuts and seemingly impossible. I was able to dial in a very nice guitar tone immediately. Vocals took a bit more work but the end result is something I can not only live with but be proud off.

If you need a great-sounding, high-quality, light-weight, BATTERY POWERED (if you need it) amp, look no further than the Cube Street EX. It's excellent.

Finally a solution!!!

By Martin McInerney on March 12, 2016 Music Background: Professional, gigging lots!

This thing is magnificent. I am a multi instrumentalist doing loads of gigs in different situations and busking too. I use it with backing tracks playing sax. I use it busking with my guitar and mic. Tonight I did a gig with two guitars into the stereo input and 2 mics. The vocals sound beautiful as do the guitars. It fills a room with good quality sound so you don't have to crank the volume. I guess that's cause it's built to work outdoors. Plenty of inputs. Used it as a floor monitor one night. I use it to run backing tracks in the practice room. Easily carried in one hand. I don't have a car so I walk across the city with a guitar in one hand and this in the other. Batteries last for ages. It's just perfect! I have always been a fan of one hand PA solutions as I didn't drive for years gigging. Had the Behringer Epa 150 which was alright but poo sound and feeding always. Well done Roland. I can't imagine how awesome the next one will be!

Solid Amp

By Sweetwater Customer on February 16, 2016

I must agree with most reviews.i like the thing...alot.i use it mainly for acoustic with a stand alone looper and an effects pedal.was looking into the ac-33 to save money on a stand alone looper but after much thought i figured i might want more than the built in 40 second looper one day so i went with this and im not disappointed. Sounds SUPER clean for acoustic guitar and thats exactly what i was looking for.a little pricey but this thing feels like its built like a tank.lightweight but feels sturdy. Lets see....downsides would be no gain knob, ....i guess thats about it really.other than its an odd shaped amp and its battery powered so youll want a case for it and its tough to find something thats shaped like this amp.i opted to buy the case separately and im glad i did.its expensive but well worth it for the perfect fit.never even have to remove it to play it. Very cool

Awesome!!

By J from PA on November 22, 2015 Music Background: Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist

It s a fantastic PA/Amp. 5 stars!!!!! It s very loud, very clean and takes mic s n vocal/guitar pedals very well. Warning!! If your buying this PA/Amp in hopes of turning it on and getting a perfect "distortion" sound for your electric guitar>its not gonna happen, UNLESS, YOU hook up a great distortion pedal through the chain into the Street EX. This Amp is more of a PA with a terrific "guitar Amp section." I hooked up the Line 6 Helix s into the Street Cube EX and its KILLER. I also used an EHX "Tortion" pedal through it and it sounded Killer. Again, this PA/Amp takes pedals great....and effects processors as well.

Most Versatile Amp Ever

By Hatchett from New Orleans on March 25, 2015 Music Background: Professional studio/live musician

This amp is evidence of Roland's dedication to improve sound and quality. I use this amp to amplify my GR55. I plug it into the stereo input channel and that leaves me two other mic/instrument inputs along with the final input for the cube jam link. The two eight inch speakers are surprisingly warm and smooth. The amp is also very loud considering it's rated at fifty watts. When you add it all up this is the most versatile amp ever, because it does everything very well. If you are a street musician this is a dream come true

I bought two Roland Cube Street EX amplifiers for my kn7000 stereo keyboard, and they sounds better than I expected. They are great little amps with plenty of power. I also bought two Roland BA-330 PA amps that I link together for my PA system. The pa system has great coverage s well. I love my Roland products. The people at Sweetwater were very friendly and helpful. If you have any hesitation when considering any one of these fine products don't. I am well satisfied.

Cube Street EX

needed a battery powered speaker that could play MP3 files any where I had no access to A/C. This speaker ROCKs. 8 AA batteries can keep me jamming for hours. The sound is great, good bass and highs.
Easy to carry and get around, especially with the carrying bag that was designed for it.

Awesome portable utility amp

By Greg Moynihan from Bremerton, WA on August 11, 2014 Music Background: Hobbyist musician, occasional live sound engineer

I bought this to play at outdoor events, backyard parties, and the farmers market. It sounds sweet and loud with guitar and backup tracks from the iPhone input. At 16.5 pounds, It is astoundingly light for it's size and the volume it produces. The wedge shape has both good and bad aspects to it. On the plus side, it projects the sound straight up to your ears nicely, even in a small space. On the downside, you have to bend down further than you would for the average combo amp to use the controls.

This amp surprised me in a few handy applications at a large gig last weekend. While running the mixing board, I used it as a powered cue wedge, it worked great. Then, when the show was over, we used it to play some background tunes while we packed up the main sound system.

This amp would be a boon at rehearsals, gigs, writing or recording sessions, and it would also be a great gadget to have on tour.

Amazing sound for 8 AA's

By Frank from SLC, UT on August 6, 2014 Music Background: Degree in jazz, I play kind of everything, still gigging.

I just bought this for a mountain-top wedding gig with limited access to electricity. I played solo classical guitar for the ceremony with this Cube on acoustic guitar setting and I must say that this unit really sounded fabulous for that bag! I'm playing a fairly high-end box with B-Band X-Over p/u & pre unit. All together this was a very tasty sounding setup.
After the ceremony I played jazz with a quintet for cocktail hour, myself on guitar and vocals. The hollowbody through the Cube's clean setting was a decent jazz tone and the reverb was good enough to use it and like it. The vocals with a Shure SM58 sounded very good. Once again, reverb on the vocal channel was perfectly usable.
Volume: picture a drum kit, upright bass, tenor sax and trumpet. Yes, that's a pretty big wall of sound. Well, this little unit cut through it easily with headroom to spare for vocals and guitar. The guys were all pretty amazed at how much I was getting out of just 8 AA batteries.
So I bought an 8-pack of high-capacity rechargeable AA's (pre-charged) and I popped them in my new Cube. After playing with it for at least an hour or so at home and then the gig for a couple more hours, the battery charge indicator is still showing full charge! This was all on "normal" power setting--I haven't played with "Eco" or "Max".
I'm a huge fan of this tiny, ultra light-weight PA/guitar amp system.

what a GREAT little amp!

By Noel " Hambone " McKim from Klamath Falls Or. & Ocean Springs Ms. on July 29, 2014 Music Background: 45 years of " you name it, I tried to play it "

Let me start by saying, the folks at Sweetwater are just the kind of folks that every musician hopes to find on the other end of the phone, when they're trying to figure out if they're buying the right gear. Nice folks! Not in a rush to get your order and get you off the phone. I had a few questions and they gave me thoughtful and informed answers. Thanks, that's meant a lot to me.
Now, The important part, the gear itself. I'm a 70 year old street musician who's been through a lot of phases from the sixties to present day music. Bought a lot of equipment in my time, some good, some not. Most of it has been in the $ 500.00 to $1000.00 range. I have never been as pleased with a piece of gear as I have been with the Roland Cube street EX. It's almost as if someone asked me what I wanted, and then designed it just for me. And designed it with the best results possible, no shortcuts. I don't know how Roland produced an Amp That has such sound quality and weighs so little, and at a very modest price. When I got it out of the Box and plugged it in, I plucked One string. When I heard the sweet pure sound of that note, I knew I had a winner ! It only got better from there. The effects let me round out the sound that fit my style and technique. This is the first amp I've owned where the effects don't have a sweet spot, the whole range is very usual, 1-to-10. Very linier. The mike preamps are great with a variety of mikes, and on the streets, you need All the help you can get. I was a little concerned that I'd have enough power if I was in a noisy location. Not to worry, quality of the sound is consistent from low to loud, and has all the power I could ever want. The weight is GREAT.
Sometimes I have park quite a ways from where I'm going to play. It's nice to know that you're not going to pull a muscle and still get to your location with a top notch piece of gear that will show of your efforts to the max. This amp is so flexable that I probably won't use all the features, but who knows.
My only shortcoming is the tuner, It's a hassle to reach down and select each string you wont to tune .
I hope this helps someone out there make a choice that works for them The Roland Cube Street Ex fits all my needs at any price.

Cube Street Ex GREAT

I didn't know what to expect, although I loved reading the Liberia review :-))) And I spoke to a salesman at Sweetwater who owns the original Micro Cube and now this item ( as I do too ) :-)

I LOVE to play in a local Park and need a Battery Amp to do so!

Being used to the 3 watts of the Micro Cube for 6 years, and pushing it to the limit, I was hopeful........and now a 'believer' !!! Even at the 10 watt Power Setting, it blows away my Micro Cube as the Dual 8"s and dual Tweeters are soooo much more .....:-))))) At 50 watts OMG ! Plus the 3 band eq on 2 channels :-))) The Reverb is very Clean and Nice and the Delay with it is GREAT feature. I'm running it on the 'clean' amp model as I use Native Guitar Rig from my Netbook.....but without my Netbook I could survive with the built in amp models and the reverb and delay! The 24 mo no interest Payout is what made this affordable for me! ($25/mo min) PS Even on AC, I discovered that the Output Power is in Effect! So make sure you turn it up to "Max" when using it on AC, as at 1st, I was wondering why the 1st channel was sounding under powered! PPS A TTRS male mini to TTRS male mini cable is included for an Iphone hookup to a separate channel which I tried and works great!

I needed a battery powered amp for my sons outdoor wedding, I saw this amp on my first search, and watched the product video. Pretty cool package, so I bought one. I was so impressed I ordered another because they can be stereo linked. Put them on Tri-pod speaker stands and they really sound good. With 3 power settings they can be used in a number of settings. Flat out the best battery powered amp!

I'm using the Cube in Liberia, Africa

By Don Riley from Liberia, Africa on June 12, 2014 Music Background: Pro Musician

Wow, I am impressed! I highly recommend the Cube Street Ex to anyone looking for high quality portable sound. I am not an entry level musician. I have studied music and sound engineering. I say this because I am very picky about my sound. I am a missionary to Liberia, Africa. Where we live, there is no electricity. The cube has enabled me to bring high quality dependable sound into the middle of Liberia's rainforest. I strap the Cube to my dirt bike using bungee cords, travel down some of the roughest roads in the world until they end, then carry it deep into the rainforest. It is very dependable. I highly recommend the Cube to everyone!

A nice, versatile amp...

By Jack on September 8, 2023

Two built-in handles make it easy to transport anywhere. Produces a ton of volume for something that can be run using just eight AA batteries. If you're concerned about battery life, the G-POWER Laptop Power Bank should run it for hours.

Amazing amp for an acoustic guitar.

By Jerry from Ohio on July 20, 2023

I bought this because my bass playing buddy got one and took it on two successive camping trips. He was using his Cube and I was playing my Martin through a Roland Microcube. On both trips we sounded great, but I couldn't match his vocals without a mic. Hence my new (battery powered) Cube ST EX. We played last week in our rehearsal area which has a Mackie 808S, but our percussionist said we sounded better with the Cubes than through the Mackie. So much so that now he wants a Cube too!

Just what I needed !

By Cliff M from Cali , north side of Yosemite on December 6, 2021 Music Background: Life long Musician ,

Iv had the original cube street for years and really liked it and feel the modeling is better for electric guitar in the original cube street as it has more options and the gain knob that's not available on the EX. The thing is, the cube street doesn't work as good for acoustic guitars, which I mostly play through these amps. The EX has a much fuller sound and more bottom end. My Taylor 414ce sounds incredible through it! I immediately changed out the speakers to the Jensen MODs as many do and that improved the tone even more. What really is cool is I can link it to my original cube street and together they really sound great, which is an awesome capability and makes for a very big sound! It also reproduces my voice extremely well, which is so important to me, as im a vocalist by trade and its imperative my voice is reproduced proper. The fact its light weight is also great as Im getting older and tired of lugging around heavy gear. This is a wonderful unit and I highly recommend it if you want an effective, no hassle plug n play amp that's surprisingly loud, clear, and runs on batteries!!!

powerful sound for a portable amp/speaker

By Dude from CO on June 8, 2021

Multiple inputs with their own eq - nice. Even good guitar tone preset options. AMAZING sound for a portable amp - but not rechargeable. Gotta take out the batteries and charge them (or just get new AA's repeatedly). Also, bluetooth connectivity would have been awesome but nothing a little BT receiver can't fix.

Great guitar amp tones.. not sure about the mic end of this amp

I have a duo situation that I can now take the guitar out of the main pa,as I loop. and can get a better sound out of my instrument.. I would have like to seen a chorus/delay at the same time, you get one or the other, but reverb is available.I can now set this wedge behind me and hear my guitar a lot better..I do not think you can gig with 2 mics and a guitar ... buy 2!!!They weigh nothing

Ridiculous!

By D. Neily from Tampa Bay on September 9, 2019

It's ridiculously lightweight! My use of this is a little unorthodox. I don't have an acoustic guitar so I play through the acoustic simulator on board. It sounds good (not 100% authentic) but gets the job done.

Since this is going to be used as bedroom practice amp and a portable, take-it-to-a-party type amp, I think it will be fine for my needs...but still evaluating. The COSM amp sounds are very good, and also quite loud. However, there is a big volume drop when going from the Clean, Crunch, and Lead settings, down to the acoustic simulator setting. The chorus and reverb are very good by the way. I was hoping for an output to add a speaker, but haven't found it? Will look through the manual to see if they have any notes on this. The speakers have some good punch to them, and the bottom end comes though just fine, but the speakers may be too directional for some players tastes.

Honestly, I like it...but if you are a "busker" you might do better going with the Boss Acoustic Singer Live 60-watt Bi-amp Acoustic Combo with FX for the same money. (Note: The Roland can run on batteries whereas the Boss cannot...but only the Boss has harmony vocal fx and a looper)

Cube Street EX 50 packs a punch

By Bruce on October 27, 2018 Music Background: Working musician

This box rocks hard. Using 8 field replaceable AA batteries is a plus, in my opinion. 4 (!) inputs on 3 channels is almost PA and when you chain 2 together, it's there. Pole mount and angled tiltback options give you maximum flexibility. The Crate Limo it is replacing was my most used piece of gear, showing up at every gig either as a FOH for libraries and schools or as a monitor for larger gigs. I expect this device to do the same.
I haven't had it on the road yet but the build appears substantial enough, as you'd expect. My only caveat is the lack of a true effects loop in the aux section. The AUX out and LINE IN are not connected into a loop like I'd prefer. Furthermore, the AUX out is mono, which makes sense, I guess, since the rest of the unit is mono, including the effects. Having R/L LINE IN is a little confusing, however.
Effects are implemented in a unique way, too. Independent Reverb on each channel is nice but Chorus/Delay split on one control is different, to say the least. No mixing of the two but the two effects are in an either/or configuration, with each using half the pot range for control. Weird. I do not care for the Chorus sound but someone else in Roland development obviously does. The Delay at its lowest setting in conjunction with Reverb provides an amazing old-school C&W guitar sound. Dial it up for a spacey or Surf vibe. Sounds good.
I'm not a denizen of the IOS ecosphere so could not check out that section other than to plug in my Android and get playback. It works that much, at least. Bluetooth control connectivity is the next obvious development for any musical reinforcement device and I'd like to see that for this one, too. That would be fun.

Great Portable Amp

By Yngwie Accordionsteen from Los Angeles on August 8, 2017 Music Background: Pro Musician for 37 YEARS

Finally a small, portable, even battery operated amp, perfect for a one man band. I perform in restaurants 4 nights a week with this little bad boy. I keep it on its lowest setting and its plenty loud enough to fill a small restaurant. Stereo with plenty of inputs and settings, and one thing that most portable PA's lack, REVERB. 8 out of 10 portable PA's have everything BUT reverb which is utterly moronic. Even my old Bose stick PA doesn't have freaking REVERB built in. Dummies. Any portable PA that lacks reverb is designed by a dummy. I don't want to carry an extra unit for reverb you meatballs.

Back to this unit, you can pop it onto a stand or leave it on the floor. Its also LIGHT and easy to carry, and sounds good enough to entertain a bunch of cheapos eating dinner. I've used it with accordion, classical guitar, vibraphone, and voice. I set it right next to my chair and people wonder where all the sound is coming from. I have my instrument in one hand and this amp in the other, one trip from the car, ONE.

The amp is loaded but the sound is just average in my opinion. Most people, even "pro" players do not know the difference though. My suggestion to Roland is to use better speakers, add phantom power, and bluetooth. If your a more rocking type of guitarist, get a tube amp instead, comon. Ultimately, this is the best and most portable option out there. I use it constantly, over 200 times a year. Hope this helps you jokers. ; )

Perfect for the downsized life!

By Mike Young from Eastern Shore of Maryland on June 29, 2017 Music Background: Snake Handler, road luthier, Bass and Guitar- 60s and 70s

I have owned many amps. Through the years- mostly bigger and better. After 3/4 of a century bigger is not better, but still I want good volume and a few select COSM Modeling effects- just not the pedal arrays of years past. The Cube Street EX does the job! Great sound, good effects on half for guitar or most anything else, a decent mike channel, outputs in case someone wants to link up with bigger or a house system. Even inputs for a pedal or two. I like the battery operation- It really does play at full volume for longer than I do with no sacrifice in quality. The input for a tablet, I Phone or whatever was there in the Cube Street, but there is a vol. control on the EX. Sweet- not critical, but a nice touch. Batteries are light weight and don't cost a fortune!

Not perfect but superb

By Roy A from NC on March 30, 2016 Music Background: Experienced musician

My wife and I play semi professionally as a duo (we don't make a living doing it but we do get paid and only play in our local area) and we occasionally busk too. When I read reviews saying people have played in front of 100-200 people with batteries only I thought it was BS. I was wrong. This thing has plenty of juice. I can't imagine a local gig that this won't handle short of a large, noisy bar - which we don't do - so a great fit.

Light, portable. The amp modeling is pretty good too - it has the volume you would expect from a 15-20 watt tube amp - yeah, it's that loud. I just use the clean electric setting and use a pedal for dirt. We use it in several configurations: One mic, an electric and mic in the line in for blues harp. Two mics and a banjo and guitar in the line ins. We use it in several other ways too. If it had separate tone and volumes on the two line in inputs it would be an easy 5 stars. I don't know about battery life yet, as we haven't run it that way enough to know. I expected a lot considering the cost and it met and even exceeded my expectations. a wonderfully versatile piece of pro-grade gear (IMHO).

Great little amp

By Daniel Corradi from Payson, AZ on February 19, 2015 Music Background: Recording Engineer, Musician

This amp works wonders for me. I do a lot of jamming in different venues and I bring my acoustic and my electric guitars. I use the mic/guitar channel set on acoustic for my acoustic and the mic/instrument for my electric. For my electric guitar I am using a DigiTech RP1000 and I run a XLR mic cord to the amp and set the pedalboard on mixer instead of amp. I did set up special patches in my pedalboard specially for this amp. This little amp has kept up with all the bands I've jammed with. The power to weight ratio is fantastic. I'm 62 years old and for me lightweight equipment is the key to playing till I'm 90 (I'll just mount it on my wheelchair). It just makes life easier.

Great sound. Absolutely ideal for a monitor, campfire, raft, cabin, or coffee house. Only drawback is no phantom power. Very light, convenient, and I must stress the 'sounds great' part. I had several people rate it next to a Fender Acoustasonic ultralight and a Bose L1 Model II. They liked this best. Bose still wins in venues bigger than 300 sq ft., and off center listening.

Busking with the Cube Street EX

By Tom E Smith from West Los Angeles, CA on August 4, 2014 Music Background: Semi pro singer, musician and engineer.

This amp is awesome. Bought it to busk with, mostly acoustic guitar and vocals. The reverb on the vocals is very nice and the acoustic preamp is excellent once you dial in the tone you want. The amp sounds better on the ground than on a stand. It sounds a little thin when you raise it off the ground. The effects and amp sims are nice for how simple they are. You cannot tweak them as much as a stand alone effect but they do the job. If I used this with an electric I would probably bring my Zoom Bt 100 along. The line inputs are plenty loud and a great addition. I would have given the Cube 5 stars if it had a master volume. It is not a big deal if I use just my vocals and acoustic but once you dial in a mix with a couple of vocals, guitar, keyboard and drum loop, it would be handy to be able to raise and lower the entire mix in unison. All in all a great unit. I have had it a couple of weeks now and just recharged the 8 AA batteries for the first time this evening. Not sure how many hours they lasted but it was a good amount. Should last a three set gig without the need to change batteries. All in all I Love this amp, the two 8" speakers and two tweeters really sound clean.

Taking it to the Street (Great Portable Small PA)

By Victor from Princeton on May 30, 2014 Music Background: Pro Musician

I have been looking for a nice sounding portable battery powered amp to use for outdoor gigs or small settings wine bar, lobby, reception area. My primary use will be for nylon string guitar and playback do backing tracks. The Roland Cube Street EX is sounding pretty good with Shertler DYNG. On my DeVoe Negra. This is a new product from Roland 50 watts 2 8in speakers, 2 tweeters and yes battery power or AC. 4 Channels, one in for a iPod or iPad, one stereo in for keyboard, one microphone and one Guitar. There are two combo jacks that take XLR or tip ring sleeve or ring sleeve. It has built-in reverb and Chorus and delay. very light and easy to carry. I have had it for two days, I purchased it new from Sweetwater. I'm looking forward to the ease of use and can't wait to use this with some of my other guitars and my soon Zofia Blanca with K&K Pickups. One of the best things about this amp/pa is it battery powered if you want to use it or you can run on AC as well. It's smaller than the Roland BA 330 and lighter but to me has more useful features two Chanel's with Bass, Mid, Treb, eq, reverb on mic channel, and reverb chorus and delay on guitar, iPod iPad in (and record and playback with app) and a stereo line in channel, useful for synthesizer, keyboards, drum machines. I really like using my Bose L1 S but this is a much more streamlined simple portable solution for where I don't need as much power. I am very happy with the purchase and acquisition of this new smaller Roland Cube Street EX. This is a great simple portable solution where you don't need to blast anyone away just provide the sound of your performance. I can see housing this amp for anyone needing a portable battery powered solution for outdoor performances at weddings, parties, small outdoor venues etc. Thank you Sweetwarter for making things right and getting this too me Mark Magdichx1265

Would be five star except for....

By Laura C from Upstate NY on December 15, 2023 Music Background: Full time working entertainer/musician

My Roland AC-30 was getting old and I was nervous it would fail on me, so time for a newer amp. I do about 450-475 1-hour performances annually, and I need a reliable, versatile amp. Patrick, my sales engineer, has been recommending this one so I got it.

THE GOOD: First off - it is So. Very. Light! What a pleasure. I refuse to buy gear I can't physically manage at this stage of the game. The amp also has a detachable cord, which is nice, considering I had to solder and replace the last cord on my AC-30 when it was shot. It has multiple inputs which is handy, and FINALLY, has separate reverb from the chorus/delay. It's punchy and I can use it for 95% of all my rooms. The sound is great for my vox as well as my acoustic guitar. I haven't plugged my Tele in it yet, but I'm sure it would be fine in a pinch.

THE NOT SO GOOD: So a huge trade off is that there is NO MASTER VOLUME!! Really Roland? So I get a decent mix between my Vocal and Guitar or Vocal and keyboard, and someone asks me to turn it down...just a bit... and now I have to futz with each of the volumes? Stupid stuff like this irritates me. Finally, Keyboards sound better through this than the AC-60, but not as good as they really need to be.

The layout gives you only one input with delay/chorus, which is frustrating. This means, if I'm doing a Rockabilly thang, I need to use external delay for my slapback on either my vox or gtr. Or - go without on one. Why there couldn't be two inputs with identical f/x, is beyond me.

My next gripe may seem petty, but when you're doing 400+ gigs a year and loading & unloading multiple times a day, you'll get my drift. I have all my gear packed like a Tetris puzzle onto my RockNRoller handcart - really, it's a work of art. However, the slope of the amp has created havoc with my thoughtfully curated, stacking system. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

At the end of the day, this is a great little amp - powerful and lightweight. It won't cut through a loud, party room with 100s of people talking, but for listening rooms, or smaller gatherings, it's perfect. Seriously, the last time I actually had to use my PA system was an outdoor festival gig. I've never used the battery power because...I just don't.

I would recommend this amp.

Almost perfect

By ALAN L MOORE from Oregon on November 30, 2021 Music Background: Gigging for 45 years

This little amp has everything I need and more. Mandolin is hard to amp because most amps boost the mids for guitar giving too much attack. This amp can be adjusted to be more like a PA and with the multiple inputs, can also be adjusted for guitar or whatever you need at the same time. Two things that would be improvements in my opinion: The DC input is like a computer power input and susceptible to damage if man or dog gets caught in it. There is a place to hook the cord and that helps a lot, but a bit more failsafe would be preferred. Second thing I would change is the volume differences when switching between clean and the other options. Kind of nit picking on that one, but it would mean less dinking around adjusting things when switching it up. Love the battery option and the power setting option. This amp really kicks all by its self yet has plenty of outside effects inputs.

Just The Ticket

I needed to replace a faulty 1995 JBL EON speaker, and I ordered the Cube Street EX on a Sunday. It arrived on Tuesday afternoon, just in time for an evening performance. Amazing service!! The unit meets my needs, with much flexibility, especially in the EQ, to handle my personal backup tracks for my banjo-sax duo. I had ordered an Aiwa EXOS 9, and quickly found that, while powerful, it had too much digital processing, even when using the touch-screen window, and it actually hurt my ears (contracted tinnitus with a sound shock 25 years ago). I returned that unit and was so pleasantly surprised at the smooth sound of the Cube. This past Thursday I ordered the case for the Cube, and behold! It was delivered on Saturday! It works perfectly to protect and carry the amp. I have been a customer of Sweetwater since the earliest days in the home, and have always found the service most helpful and prompt. I am glad to recommend both the Cube EX and the friends at Sweetwater.

Love this thing!

By Robert Velasquez from Western slope Colorado on February 9, 2019 Music Background: Playing since I was 14, I’m 69 now. I play many genres and own several guitars. I’m a home recordist and work solo.

I"ve been wanting a battery powered amp for busking downtown where I live. I have literally researched just about every battery powered amp/pa available. Youtube was a huge help. In my opinion, none of the products in this class could offer what I required except this amp.

I put it thru some basic tests with my 1992 American Strat and Taylor 1992 510 Dreadnaught straight into it since this is how I envisioned it I would use it.
I also patched in my iPad to play the backing tracks I create. The tracks are mixed to play in my pa and a Roland KC150. They both have excellent bottom end responses.

From what I have seen in a few YT vids is that the bottom end would be week. This proved to be the case in my backing tracks and on my guitar. The backing tracks do not sound bad but the "sense" of the bottom end missing is noticed but quite usable.
I found my Strat a bit more problematic. I"m still working on controlling the treble side. For my style of music, the "Crunch" CMOS setting works best. I can get a quasi jazz tone by rolling back the volume and tone on the guitar. I think I"ll be able to use the "lead" setting as well with a little effort. One thing that I noticed was a huge drop in volume when switching to the "Clean" setting. It does sound good but I can"t see having to play with the amps volume settings at a gig.

My Taylor seemed to fit like a glove. I really liked the sound I got....I"ll try it again today as I want to try it with "fresh ears." The tonal spectrum seemed well presented and harmonics were easy to do. Really happy here. For fingerstyle this is a very nice pairing.

The efx are nice but not sure how usable they are. They just didn"t seem to cut thru the backing tracks. I"ll try the amp at a louder setting today. I"ll try my Roland GR55 but just for fun as the use for this amp is for battery powered use which leaves the Rokand out.

I"m thinking about getting the Boss GT efx pedal in the hopes it will give me better control with efx but also tone controls. I"m also going to upgrade the speakers to improve the low end frequencies.

I am very excited to get this amp. It"s akerper!!

Roland Cube EX

Pros
Very good clean tones (acoustic guitar, specially)
Excelent small PA with 3 instruments inputs and 1 aux (4 channels)
Good volume for small indoors works
Good battery amp

Cons
No gain knob for guitar section (it's a big joke!)
Only 3 COSM amps without gain control (believe me!)
Overpriced

Conclusion: good purchase for acoustic guitar and vocal (perfect for small outdoor parties and small indoor works)

Update

By Matt Miller from Yorktown Hts, NY on September 3, 2014 Music Background: Pro Musician, Pro Computers, Pro AV, Pro DJ

This is an Update: Great....but too much $ ! Thankfully I was able to get the monthly 2 year payout ! BTW this is listed as 2 channel when its a 4 Channel Amp !!! :-) Anyway: After happily using this now for a month.....After playing for any typical 3-5 hr outing, I realized its best to charge my rechargeable batteries! Otherwise I'm losing power on the 2nd outing! The removeable Battery Compartment makes this nice! For the money...I would have appreciated a provided recharging system !! I had to spend $80, for top of the line rechargeable batteries and chargers! :-( As with any thing else, one gets the best Bass on the floor, but the design makes it tricky to get at the controls. Re the channels, I wish the Keyboard/Line Input had TONE and effects as the 1st 2 inputs. The 4th input is for an ipad/iphone, and for those who use that input, again..no tone controls ! :-( I run 3 channels, and coming from the original Micro Cube, this is FABULOUS :-))) Bass and Treble galore on the 1st 2 channels :-))) The Guitar Channel Treble is just GREAT! Even at 1 O'clock ! And the Bass on the 1st Channel...again Divine :-))) For my act, I bought; I now have included a Behringer 1002B Battery Mixer to have a fingertip source, Full tone controls, and a Master Fader( as another suggested would be great), for controlling everything...... But I still run 2 separate inputs from the Behringer to the Roland! For my guitar though, I bypass the Behringer, as it otherwise mutes my Treble! The overall SOUND quality cannot be denied! Everyone that comes up to me says how 'Wonderful' it sounds ! And I agree! PS Now that I'm thinking about it....a great addition: would be a foot pedal Kill Switch to Mute everything at the end of a song!

Roland Cube EX

very nice amplifier overall; but if you enjoyed the COSM amp molding setting on the earlier model Street Cube (Brit- Classic- ) etc you're out of luck- they left out most of the vintage amp modeling settings on this new amp- ...don't get me wrong- the amp is still very hi-definition for clean tones- and acoustic guitar- I don't think the amp's can handle active electronics on a guitar without damaging the circuitry- so I would avoid playing an active guitar through these amps if you do not want to damage the speakers - etc- I just wish they would design a 10" speakers configuration an cut to the chase- 6 & 8 " speakers are always going to sound tinny in my opinion-

back track horrible

By richard from california on July 7, 2023 Music Background: professional

if you plug a back track into this amp the sound quality is very bad. About the level of a cheap little transistor radio. Very lacking in sound quality. I looked inside at the electronics and discovered it to be a very low quality electronics. Hard to believe at this price that would have been dine this way.

Great For Small Gatherings! But......

By RPH from Mississippi on June 10, 2022 Music Background: Professional

I recently bought this amp. My problems with it are that it caters to Apple iPhone and iPads. I use Bluetooth on my other amps. It could use Bluetooth, bypass the iCrap stuff and change that jack to a standred mini audio cable for playing tracks. Apple wants to take over.
Also the line outs could be XLR'S instead of TS jacks for direct input to a PA system. The TS inputs are over used. I have to buy a expensive ($35) XLR Female to dual TS Male connections to hook my Bluetooth adaptor to its input channel. The other XLR's are used by my guitar and mic.
Plus it very pricey for its size. They could have thought it out more. Change a few things for 5 stars.

Could be better

By Alec on August 1, 2020

So this amp works great when plugged in but on the battery it's not great at all with a guitar and microphone plugged in. It's cuts in and out.. tried new cables same issue. New batteries same issue... so I called Roland.. they said "oh they do that of it's too hot or too cold outside" so you basically have to busk when it's 70 degrees and that's it. They said it needs to be in shade.. but even with those suggestions it still drops to lower volumes while playing.. could be better.. can't really busk with it unless it's plugged in and that makes it pointless..

Needs More Power

By John Trickel from Omaha, NE on September 4, 2014 Music Background: Experienced

Ok... Great features. The sound is amazing. But way overpriced at $500. Not loud enough for clear outdoor work. I bought it because I wanted a good battery powered amp (there are so few out there) but I am just unimpressed with this amp at this price. It should only have cost about $300 tops.

Good Practice Amp

By Tim from Ohio on August 30, 2016 Music Background: Semi-Pro

Not a very loud amp. Works well if I use it with my Boss ME-80 though. I have to turn the volume nob all the way up which is unusual. You have to remember it is 50 watts stereo so it's really only 25 watts which is not much in a solid state amp. I like the weight and the fact that you can plug in a mike at rehearsal and not depend on the PA system. Sweetwater was great. Received it fast and they follow up.

Gain missing

By Dan Lee on October 31, 2014 Music Background: Solo performer.

The guitar section is a joke.
Just clean, crunch and lead.
No gain!!
So, this gear is not designed much for the electric guitarist.
Tweaking the gain is essential for a smooth sound.
Clean is clean in this case..
Steal to steal!
Bang bang.
Acoustic part is beautiful I must admit.

Its a PA system that runs on batteries.

By Matthew Faccenda from Woodhaven, NY on March 16, 2018 Music Background: Professional NYC Subway Performer (busker).

This portable amp is great with microphones, MP3 players, and line level instruments, but it has the most disappointing guitar amp section of any amp I've ever owned. There is no effects loop so forget adjusting your volume if you need to solo over something. The voicing of the Crunch and Lead modes is not very versatile, and the delay and reverb effects are essentially useless because there is almost no control over the effects. I use the guitar section for my vocals (you can make it a MIC channel with a switch), and the MIC section (turned into an Instrument input with a switch) for my amp modeler.

As a busker, I didn't have a ton of choices for an amp that runs on batteries with enough channels to get the job done. I gave it a 1.5 because the build quality is great, and as a clean PA, it works well. I would have given it a 3 if the guitar section didn't sound so uninspiring. The last time I hadda use this amp for guitar, I used the guitar section with like $500 worth of overdrive and EQ in front of it just to fix the voicing.

Get this amp if guitar tone is not important to you.

Update Tip

By Matthew Miller from New York on June 27, 2017 Music Background: Pro

I LOVE mine! BUT There is a little slide switch in the rear for the LINK Control! Mine not only broke from normal transport, but that damage has created an intermittent problem where the Chorus comes on of its own volition :-(((( HERE's a suggested preemptive fix! Cut the switch off to make it flush with the case! Etch a notch into it......and you'll be able to move with your finger! !! PS I would have loved to have Tone Controls on the Iphone and Keyboard inputs. The iphone input is worthless without Tone Controls! Otherwise......to repeat...I LOVE mine !

bad back track sound

By Richard Medeiros from California on January 18, 2023 Music Background: playalot

guitar sounds good. But...very disappointed with playback with back tracks. sounds very cheap akin to a cheap little radio. really unbelievably bad quality and have not found any solution. So if you play with a back track on...forget it. Searched on line and this is in fact a well known problem.

bad back track sound, bad guitar sound

By rick from cal on September 29, 2022 Music Background: playalot

The sound quality on these units are not all that good. playing guitar you need to work with the EQ to try to get some ok tones. As far as back track playing through the cube link....absolutely horrible cheap sound, very tiny, about as bad as it can get. I would not recommend this amp at all. Way over priced. For this money spent totally not good at all. I've owned cheap amps that give way way better sound tones with back tracks plugged in. Even the sound quality for the guitar I find very lacking.

Does not live up to it's name .... the

By Sweetwater Customer on September 28, 2020

I am a professional solo performer working 4-5 days per week to earn a meager living. Bought this amp to replace my old Roland Cube. I needed at least 3 inputs, more power, more clarity, more reliability, more versatility, more ....... well what I got was basically a lot less of what I really needed. If you want what you need, you need to do a lot of back-alley self-engineering - because Roland does not give a rats-butt about what they are selling or who is using the gear. After using the Amp through my summer gig sessions - the amp is falling apart via loose screws as well as being inconsistently reliable in terms of tone quality and clarity. One example is since many of my gigs are a battle of fighting background noise at sidewalk cafe/restaurants - I often need to have an ear-bud to hear my vocals more correctly. But does Roland think to build-in that functionality without cutting out normal audio? Of course not, therefore we have to route an ear-bud via the Audio-out via ear-bud pre-amp. This is just another device that requires setup, storage, transporting, charging etc ...... and when you setup and tear-down sometimes twice per day - you really do not need the burden. The list goes on in terms of why you cannot have the same effects in both channels etc, but I will not bore you with details. So fellow street musicians - I cannot offer any alternatives ...... Roland needs to change the name of this amp to the "sort-of Street Cube". ALSO, if you are planning to buy the "cover" to protect the sort-of-street-cube - do not expect much and you will not be disappointed ......

SIMPLY FELL APART

By Wes on June 2, 2020

Sent the first one back in less than two days. No matter what channel you used, it made a chirpping sound with every note.
The replacement did no do that. However. Had the replacement now for a couple of years and literally hate it with a passion.
It's been living indoors only all this time in a Street Cube EX case, literally covered every minute it's not in use. The thing without question has less than 10 hours use on it. Eveytime I unzip the case from the beginning it has had a different issue. Most it is ALL of the nuts that thread on to ANY of the 1/4 jacks can be found rattling around in the case.In all seriousness, at this very moment it still looks like a brand new unit due to the extreme care I take of equipment.
Last night I pulled it out to use it for a little bit, and yet again, a 1/4 nuts is missing and rattling around in the bottom of the zipper case. I plug it in, plug in an acoustic instrument...... ABSOLUTELY NO SOUND AT ALL. The lights came on, the tuner appeared to be working, the mute button lit up, BUT ZERO AUDIO coming from the thing. Albiet, the headphones out did have audio from all channels.
Diagnosis: ABSOLUTE POOR QUALITY JUNK.
Prognosis: Next time we have a burn pile, this junk will be in it. I JEST YOU NOT. I'll shoot video of it burning and post as soon as we do another burn pile.

ABSOLUTE JUNK and waste of $... OH ! By the way. Just try getting Roland/Boss on the phone. NOT GONNA HAPPEN ! ! !

Not impressed

By Bry from USA on November 21, 2015

I bought this Roland Street Cube EX primarily to sing outdoors to backing tracks. I did not use it with a guitar or any other instrument. Just my new mic (Shure SM58) and my backing tracks on my ipod. There is no way this is 50 watts....sounds like 10 watts max. I don't appreciate the misleading Roland marketing. It is not powerful or loud in any way. Singing into the mic easily overpowered the speakers and distortion occurred. The Channel 1 mic input gave a noticeable hiss with every word sung into the mic. Absolutely unacceptable for singing. In order for me to reach reasonably audible volume levels I had to use the unit on max setting with levels very high up on my tracks and the mic.....and at such volumes the quality of sound was poor and unpleasant. Not professional sounding.....very thin sounding and shrill. If you're just playing an instrument through this unit, maybe it would be ok for that....but it is not good for singers who require a reasonably good sound. I wanted to really like this unit because of the battery powered portability, but it's not nearly powerful enough for the street for singing or playing backing tracks. I was very disappointed with this amp so I returned it. The guys at Sweetwater were great to deal with....a fast easy return, and I will continue buying all my gear from them.
