Way Huge Smalls Conspiracy Theory Professional Overdrive Pedal Reviews

Mid-gain Overdrive Pedal with Output, Treble, and Gain Controls

If the Way Huge Conspiracy Theory bears a more than passing resemblance to a particularly lusted-after, gold-boxed, mid-gain overdrive, it's no coincidence. This single-wide amp driver masterfully captures the subtle sweetening, the indefinable mojo, that has made the original a key ingredient in countless pro guitarists' session setups. Conspiracy Theory boasts an extremely sensitive gain range and a highly musical tonal sweep. So whether you're driving tubes into crunch territory or lengthening leads with its sweet, silken sustain, Conspiracy Theory excels at all shades of sensibly-gained harmonic enhancement. Looking for legendary tone without the mythic price tag? Take Way Huge's Conspiracy Theory Professional Overdrive pedal for a spin — available now through Sweetwater.

Killer 90s guitar tone!

By Anthony Scianna from Sterling Heights, MI on December 15, 2023

This is the tone that I've been looking for after all these years! I have "The Dude" for my higher gain and this little guy for my low/medium. Nice and crunchy!

Somebody has to say it, this pedal and bloody amazing not for just its low cost but for how it sounds.....

By Paul on August 30, 2023

I have many Klon pedals and somehow this little puppy stays on the board and whenever I use it I am reminded just how good it sounds. It is without a doubt my fav Klon type pedal. I saw a frequency analysis and comparison to a real high dollar Klon and this pedal was identical. Some will say this or that but it was identical to the Klon. It has Germanium Diodes as well. I am no sure of what the actual impedance and buffer stats are as for some reason manufacturers believe we are too stupid to care about it. This little wonder of Way sounds amazing and is the best sounding Klon I have used. I usually do not like cranking the gain on the Klon but this one sounds better and I really like it. It holds a place in my chain of drives and provides a very good as it gets Klon rendering.

Conspiracy Theory is ...just get it!

By Craig from California on July 25, 2023 Music Background: life-long side man, + 16 yrs P&W

I've had mine for awhile now, $ well invested. Keeping it. Lots going on w/ the treble knob & gain knob. This is a stellar pedal. Craving some tone compliments, from players in the audience? This will certainly help.

Versitle and good value

By tim hoefer from orlando, FL on March 10, 2023

The Conspiracy Theory produces organic preamp overdrive and gain, without sounding sterile. Was able to turn the amp preamp down and the output section up a little, which produced less noise. Tones are more rounded and glassy than jagged. There is definitely some mojo with the enhanced harmonics.
It has some compression, while preserving the native sound of the guitar; i.e., a tele sounds like a tele, a strat sounds like a strat and humbuckers sound like humbuckers.
If cranked, vintage Zepplin and pre-Fandango ZZTop are possible, but you will not be able to cover Black Sabbath or get your chug on.
For me, this is a great middle pedal between the compressor and high-gain pedals. It may not be for everyone, but it can cover the sounds I want.

Great pedal

By Sweetwater Customer on February 6, 2023

I stack this up with the Way Huge Overrated Special. Great tone into a clean channel.

Loves Humbuckers,

By Shane from Florida on November 16, 2022 Music Background: Classic rock, southern rock, jazz.

I wanted to send this back,I put it through a 1975 vibro champ with a 60s road worn strat had hardly no gain and cleans were just alright, then put it through my mesa with my sg special burstbucker pickups, aluminum bridge and tail piece, this thing loves humbuckers, i couldn't put the guitar down, ac/dc gain and when you back the gain off, fender clean sound,I'm so glad I tried it with humbuckers, has a great studio quality about it,professional transparent overdrive, and for the price,I don't know how tripps does it,Definitely staying on my pedal board because it makes everything sound better.

you will not regret

By Selvin from Washington Dc on July 5, 2022 Music Background: Worship musician

I love this pedal, I can spend hours playing the sound not boring you, one of the better gold Klon Klones that I have heard. And the price is right.

It’s a keeper.

By Nick on July 1, 2022

Klone clones. Some of them work, some fall flat even though some of the tones can be very similar. For me it's all about feel and response, and this one has it. Definitely staying in the collection.

happy with my Klone!

By Bobby from Wilmington, NC on May 12, 2022

After spending way too much time listening to youtube videos of Klones, I decided to give this one a try. I'm pretty blown away. I think this will be my "always on" pedal. It is incredibly transparent and sounds very natural. I plugged in 4 very different guitars and literally could not get a bad sound. At low gain it gives a nice subtle "umph" and decent volume boost, and at high gain, it's very full with all the notes (even with chords) coming through clearly. Running it into a Quilter 101 Reverb head. I imagine it will sound good with most amps. Pairs well with a Tube Screamer in front for leads. I can't wait to gig with it!

after about a yr it is still on my board...

By Paul from pool house on April 13, 2022

For the bucks I do not think there is a better OD pedal, in fact I am sure there isn't. I saw this matched side by side with a real Klon on a frequency analyzer and really in the sound print and hearing it you could not tell a difference at all. Big band for the buck here. Sure it has some differences from the original circuit but Tripps knows his stuff and this puppy does the deal.

Simply awesome

By Shawn on March 26, 2022 Music Background: Intermediate novice

At first I wasn't totally in love with it playing my SG through it into a Boss Katana MKII. Then I remembered something I heard the guy in the Sweetwater demo video say about having the amp gain up to almost breaking up. I switched over to a Les Paul standard and put the amp on clean with the gain just about to break up "if you dig in.". It was like the clouds parted and a chorus of angels rang out through my amplifier. After that I started playing around with the settings and found this pedal to be extremely versatile. It's like sugary with a bite. Hard to describe. Very crisp. Just sounds amazing. I love this pedal.

Way Huge Conspiracy Theory

By Andrew from Texas on February 7, 2022 Music Background: Been playing guitar and bass since 1994

Way Huge Conspiracy Theory has a light grit with single coils and sounds more powerful with P-90s and humbuckers. My Vox AC 10 amp has a gain dial, it somehow extracts more gain out of it. When I plug it into my clean channel Fender Deluxe Reverb amp, the gain sounds more mild though still very much alive, almost as if the Conspiracy Theory is two different pedals. I can see why people claim to use them as clean boosts. It has this subtle buzz to it unlike.other overdrives, it sounds less like the wall of rolling gain I hear from the Earthquaker Westwood pedal but definitely sounds and feels like a good overdrive. I like the feel of the gain, I also have the mini Wampler Tumnus pedal. Both sound nice, the Tumnus klone has more bass and overall room filling presence, but it also has this noticable vibrato-wah modulation which can't be dialed out. I prefer the Conspiracy Theory of the two. I also tried the MXR Sugar Drive klone, I still prefer the gain and frequency range from the tone dial the Conspiracy Theory has.

Beautiful

By Sweetwater Customer on February 1, 2022

Don't let the ugly colorway fool you, this thing sounds beautiful. I use it for ambient music to help my signal cut through and thicken up and add texture. Kick off the reverbs and delays and it's great for punk. It makes for some pretty chunky palm mutes, and gives you a sort of Marshall-ish tone when you completely turn down the treble knob and crank the gain. Speaking of which, it has a lot of range but can ice picky towards the higher end. Works great for single coils and humbuckers and the compact size is nice. It's accessible without feeling like a toy like a mini pedal. I initially got this because Mike won't sell me a Prince of Tone, but after hearing this through my rig, I'm not even sure if I want or need another overdrive.

Seriously

By George Lester from LEBANON, OR on January 13, 2022

Just buy this pedal if you can find one. It will be the center piece of your board, no kidding.

Great Kon-style pedal at reasonable price

By Brad Miller from Dallas, TX on January 12, 2022

I love Klon-style pedals, but like most people, I can't afford an original. (And I wouldn't spend that much on a pedal anyway.) I have a cheap Mosky Golden Horse which sounds amazing for the $20 it cost. But the Way Huge Conspiracy Theory sounds even better--as you would expect, given the higher price--and it has a little bit more gain available. Every setting on this pedal sounds great, from a mild boost to rocking power chords at the higher gain settings. Very low noise floor, too. Always sounds organic, chords never lose their definition, and your guitar's base tone always comes through. Truly a "transparent" overdrive pedal. I wish every pedal worked this well, and were as satisfying to play through. Highly recommended!

Surprise!

This pedal just,it's nearly perfect. The biggest pedal surprise so far.Well and the tc Zeus overdrive.Stacked it is the sound tone hounds look for.Try em both, promise you will dig them both.

The Wind Cries Conspiracy Theory

By Larry from Vancouver, WA on September 15, 2021 Music Background: 20+ yrs guitar

Seriously this pedal is a beauty! By itself it gloriously reproduces that iconic Klon sound and touch responsiveness. Pairs great with other pedals, I prefer it in front of my beloved Catalinbread Blood donor, the sound to me is so stellar. I've also used it in front of my OCD GE For killer Hendrix tones. Shout out to my Sales Engineer Jake for helping to assure I got one in the last batch. Thanks Jake!

Excellent Overdrive

By Jason Gullick on September 7, 2021 Music Background: Playing guitar since 1983

Excellent pedal! Love the drive on low or high - really good tones. I've never heard or owned a KLON but I guess this is supposed to be close to one. I run this pedal using a Tele Ultra through a Marshall Origin 20. Sounds incredible -

The BEST Overdrive value ever.

By Herb G. from S.F. on August 19, 2021 Music Background: Guitarist/Vocalist

I've been a gigging musician for a very long time and pedals have always played a real big part in my tone sculpting since I use Single Channel Amps (Pre-CBS) or a Tone King Imperial MK II for the vast majority of my gigs. I also own a real Klon, a V2 Klon and a few highly regarded Klones (all purchased new over the years).

Bottom line: Way Huge not only made a pedal that's virtually impossible to get a bad tone out of (it's such a wonderful "always on" pedal) but they made it with a footprint that's ultra pedalboard friendly, and it's only $129! No wonder they're a bit tough to get their hands on as I'm seeing them on my fellow guitar player's boards more and more. And oh yeah…it stacks incredibly well. Everyone else that's reviewed the Conspiracy Theory is spot on.

Way Huge Conspiracy Theory

By Sweetwater Customer on January 31, 2021 Music Background: Blues, hard rock, heavy metal

My fiancé got this for me as a Christmas gift and it sounds amazing. I have a mod shop fender stratocaster with custom shop 54 pickups, running through a fender blues junior. Obviously the intent of this pedal was to mimic the Klon Centaur and based on sound clips I've heard of both pedals, I'd say they nailed it. Subtle bump in the lower mids, but still an overall transparent overdrive. Through my rig I can get it to range from clean boost, almost to a saturated distortion. Highly recommend to anybody that plays blues to hard rock.

This Pedal is my favourite Overdrive

By Scott on January 27, 2021

I love the tone of this pedal. It's a Klon Clone with a little different spin. Has the same characteristics of the Klon tone but not as sharp mids. You can dig into the strings for more gain saturation and lighten up on strings for lighter saturation giving it a more clean sound. But it has a softer and smoother midrange. It will be on my board for a long time. I don't regret getting this one. And thanks Matt for all the help.

5 for the quality/tones and price

By Paul on September 4, 2020 Music Background: heavy fusion player many decades

Klon is a mythical beast, many copy/clone the circuit and there are some very good ones out there. This offering I suspect in many ways competes with them to the point if there is a difference it is slight, and this puppy just might sound a little better than many other "exact" clones costing much more, but this circuit is not so much a copy but a tweaked in similarity.
Thing that bugs me is trying to find out if it has the internal voltage charge pump that boosted up to 18v internally. This would have opened the headroom even more, it is also absent the Klon buffer circuit and overall benefit that often gave pedal chains. One can have too many buffers of course but if you only have one, the Klon is a nice one.
All in all for the price, tiny pedalboard area and quality of tone, a real winner. I like it, gets a recommend for me.
I placed it for a clean boost and over all enhancement type pedal. I won't say it's "better" than other Klon clone pedals, but it certainly does the deal for a lot less. Tripps tweaked on this circuit and it sounds like a Klon but like I said it has differences, good or bad, Si diodes (but toned down in harshness), only 9v internally far as I know, and no Klon buffer present.
But really for the price and quality of build Way Huge puts into pedals, a great buy and a highly useful pedal. I run a very populated board using a VoodooLab 8 bypass loop switcher where all the Boosts, ODs and high gains are loaded in. Cool pedal I have really started to dial it in to my desired tones, which is doing the deal. I got a demo deal... so next to my beloved and never going away EP3 booster two of the best things... I have ever spent on my guitar!

Trips knows what's up.

By John Jex from TX on May 29, 2020 Music Background: Classic rock, alternative. 25 years on guitar.

I've owned a RYRA Klone, a Sugar Drive, Soul Food, j. Rockett Archer, Tumnus and played 2 or 3 of the real thing in side by side comparisons. For my money, this sounds, while not necessarily the closest, it might be the best for the buck. The build is small for way huge, but still quirky. The gold color is louder than a picture can accurately represent. The silicon diodes really shine and the texture of the sound is legit.

The overdrive I've been seeking

By Will V. from Oak Park, IL on May 16, 2020

Doesn't thin out the tone like a lot of other overdrive pedals, my guitar still sounds round and fat. It does that subtle boost everyone loves, but it also excels at pushing an amp that's just breaking up a little bit into creamy overdrive (think cranked Plexi) territory. So far I've been playing it in front of my Yamaha THR10C on the British (Plexi) mode with the gain and master dimed, and it's been just awesome for that little amp. Looking forward to also putting it in front of my tweed Vibrolux clone and Marshall Origin 5 in the near future.

Great drive pedal. Clear

By Jon Wilson from Albany on February 7, 2020

Nice clear distortion, overdrive, and clean boost. Nothing bad to say at all!

Only $1000 less than the real thing

Definitely one of the better gold Klon Klones that I have heard. And the price is right.

Great pedal!

By Darrel Christensen from Austin, Texas on September 29, 2022 Music Background: Blues/rock, red dirt player.

I have a single channel amp, the Way Huge Conspiracy Theory pedal can be left on or used as a second channel. It really warms my tone up without taking the natural guitar and amp sound out.

Great OD

By Chad from Clarksville, TN on August 23, 2019

This pedal sounds really good. It"ll give you a solid boost, or a clear overdrive. Your guitar and amp will retain their sound with the added benefits of this pedal.

I use it as a lead boost into my amp or my OCD, although I could easily use this as a base overdrive sound if needed or wanted.

Conspiracy Theory is confirmed

By Stephen from Texas on July 30, 2019 Music Background: Home player

This pedal is an excellent "klon" style pedal. It seems to have a wider range of adjustment than those I have tried. It will be part of my pedal board going forward.

Well hello there!

By RV from Seattle on June 7, 2019 Music Background: Rock/punk

I was initially on the fence about this pedal the 1st day I had it. Because I was playing it through a small practice amp. Also I wasn"t sold on the whole "klon" craze, as I have some nice overdrives.
Then I ran it in front of my Vox ac30 and was blown away ! Sweet sustain , warm articulate overdrive and my Vox "chime" was still present! Sounded great through my orange tiny terror also!
I did a comparison to my other overdrives and it definitely brings something else to the table. Quality is good and the price is reasonable . I only gave it 4 stars only because I"m not to crazy about the small size. (Personall preference) The new way huge smalls pedals are more compact then Mxr pedals. I prefer the larger way huge enclosures. But aside from that this is definitely a top notch drive pedal! Get one for yourself and dig it ! Thanks sales rep Bryan Campbell !
