Peavey Classic 20 Mini Stack 20-watt Tube Head with 2x12" Cabinet Reviews

20W Tube Electric Guitar Amplifier Head, 120W 2 x 12" Extension Speaker Cabinet, and Speaker Cable

Peavey's Classic 20 Mini tube amp head packs all the tonal tenacity that the Classic 20 series is known for, and at 20 watts it can definitely be taken to your next gig. Sometimes even 20 watts is way too loud, especially for your neighbors... as Sweetwater guitarists are well aware. No problem. With onboard power attenuation down to one watt and speaker-defeatable, cabinet-emulated mic and USB outputs, getting that roaring tone from your Classic 20 Mini at low levels is a piece of cake. If you're looking to scream above a loud band, you're in luck when you grab the Classic 20 Mini and matching Peavey 212-C speaker cabinet package!

Not really sure what I have...

By Anthony

Yesterday I picked up my new Peavey amplifier from a FedEx shipping location. I bought a new Peavey Classic 20-watt tube head with 2x12" cabinet from Sweetwater. I was really excited. I watched so many marketing and creator videos online to make sure this was the amp for me. I couldn't wait to get my new amp home and plug in! However, when I got home, further inspection of the speaker cabinet shipping box revealed some things that gave me a bad feeling.

The speaker cab box - the 212-C - looked a little beat up and old - the way cardboard looks when it's been sitting around for a little while, thinner and a little wavy like it's lost some of its integrity. There are 'rip holes' on a few sides and the top looks as if someone over-taped it closed, almost like it's been re-taped several times. Was this a used return? I removed the cabinet from the box, and overall, there appears to be no physical damage. But that's not what is really worrying me.

My worries stem from not just how old and worn the cardboard box looks, but the fact that the logo appears to be in a different place on the speaker cabinet than what I was expecting (justified to the top horizontally rather than in the middle of the speaker mesh), and the fact that the serial number cannot be found on the Peavey website. It's not lost on me that manufacturers change things around from time to time, but what I got looks nothing like the item pictured I thought I had purchased.

The speakers likely work, but I haven't plugged it in to try as of yet because I wanted to contact first to see if anyone at Peavey can tell me when this cabinet was produced. I think the head is newer, but again, the logos seem to be all over the place (with or without the oval frame) in videos and marketing I've been researching. My feeling is that while the head may be a more recent production item, the 2x12 cabinet might be an older production piece that was returned and sat around for a while - and I'm not happy about it.

Still waiting to hear back from Peavey...
