Nothing to get excited about.

By David D. from NW Missouri
Music Background: singer-songwriter producer, engineer

When one hears the name "dbx" one usually associates it with high quality. This isn't. It's functionality is limited and it cannot perform tests other, less expensive testers can perform. Specifically, one cannot test installed cables with this unit. That, being the case, it is useless for troubleshooting problems in venues with installed sound reinforcement systems like churches, nightclubs, coffee houses, schools, etc.
Unfortunately, this important information is not included in the product description, nor is it included in the owner's manual.
While it may be useful for people to test cables they use, less expensive units by mackie and Behringer can do the same thing and at a lower cost. Best marks I can give this is a "meh" rating of three stars.

By Mr. R. from Lenoir City, TN
Music Background: I taught guitar at Tennessee Tech for 18 years and guitar for 40 years.

I bought a Whirlwind tester in the late 1980's and used it extensively for 30 years.......it died about a month ago. I love my new dbx CT2!!! I was up and running with it in no time.

As advertised and more!

By Bill K. from Sugar Grove, IL
Music Background: I play piano, bass, drums and keyboards and love to record in my home studio.

This is my first cable tester unit and I am quite pleased. The unit is solid construction that appears to be able to withstand many years of use. The TRS inserts test both balanced TRS and unbalanced TS cables. The probes allow for testing of any cable in which there is no specific cable insert. I love that I can test any cable in my home studio, including MIDI and Y-cables (split stereo cables). Great product! Sweetwater shipped it crazy fast and added a 2 year warranty to boot.

Great piece of gear for my toolbox

By Jesus P. from El Paso, TX
Music Background: Owner/Operator Pro-Sound Company, DJ & Live Production, Consulting, Rentals

This solid "Built like a Tank" device does the job it is supposed to do. Very user friendly. Replaced an older unit that was misplaced after a gig and left behind. Thanks to Michael Grebe at Sweetwater who is always there to assist and give solid advice.

Simple & Affective @Great Value

By Michael from San Jose, CA / South Lake Tahoe, NV
Music Background: Guitarist, Sound Engineering Hack, Gear Hound

Easy to use, identifies cable functional issues with a turn of the dial. TS cable results are a bit confusing, but once a "bad" is experienced results are better understood. Eliminates questions regarding which are affected, cables vs receptacles - for guitarists, noisy connections due to damaged cables can be isolated. A must have, if multiple cables are used in your set up(s)!

dbx CT2 Cable Tester, a Really Cool Little Box.

By Greg P. from Olney, Maryland
Music Background: Offending ears with my playing since the 1960s

I have always used a voltmeter to test my cables when I suspected damage, but this little box greatly simplifies the task, and ~anybody~ who can plug a cable into a socket will have no trouble using the CT2.

It is solidly built, easy/intuitive to use, and easy to read. This has already become a necessity in my tool box whenever I play.

Cables are expensive, and this really helps you quickly diagnose any issues, so you can make necessary repairs, and it isn"t expensive at all. I own individual cables that cost a lot more than this device.

If you maintain your own gear, or even just want to be able to quickly ID a bad cable on your rig, buy one of these.

You will not be disappointed.

Great multi-use tester!

By Sweetwater Customer from CO

This is a great multi-use cable tester. Tests each pin in XLR or DMX individually. It works great for our purposes as a mobile church campus. No more switching out cables to find the bad one. We've only had it a few weeks, but so far it has proven a worthwhile purchase.

Must Have Tool For Gigging Bands

By Sweetwater Customer

After experiencing a night of unwanted noise in our FOH system, even after swapping out a few cables, we feared we might be having issues with our main speakers. I purchased the dbx CT2 and found several of our cables were bad. We have since either repaired them or replaced them and have had no further problems.
The dbx CT2 is quick and easy to use. It's small enough to easily pack away and take anywhere. You can test a variety of cables, XLR, RCA, TRS, etc... I now consider it a must have tool and recommend it for others.

A long overdue addition....

By Larry D. from Dardenne Prairie, MO

This is exactly what I was looking for to be able to test my cables and weed out the old, bad ones. Simple to use, sturdily built and lots of cable options. Exactly what I was looking for.

Not Great For Pedalboard Cables

By Mike B. from Northern VA
Music Background: Hobbyist

It's built very solid, feels like it could be thrown at a brick wall and keep working. My only significant complaint is the distance between the TRS jacks. The unit is fairly wide which makes it impossible to use the jacks for very short cables as you'd make for a pedalboard. They include handheld terminals you can plug into the box and touch to the plugs to check them. This works but undermines the ease of use of the unit, in the case of making short cables. I'm not going to return it, good enough, but had I known this before I would have bought something different with closer jack placement. I would only say this is an OK unit but scoring it only a 2 seems overly harsh, it's very well built and quality, the jacks are just too far apart for my needs. If I wasn't making short cables I'd probably have given it a 4 or 5.

dbx CT2 cable tester

By Paul G. from Sussex Wisconsin, USA
Music Background: Have played with friends on Monday nights for 15 Years. Gigs- yes

Purchased the CT2 through Clint in sales and he was as always helpful and professional. I came across 40 cables on Craigslist which I would usually test with an Ohmmeter but because there were so many I figured, get a cable tester. Clint recommended the CT2 and I think it was a wise purchase. It's heavy duty, built like a tank, quality connectors and I found nine bad cables. A wiggle test revealed four of them. So don't forget to do your wiggle test to find those intermittent connections. Thanks Clint, Thanks Sweetwater. Go Packers!
