ClearSonic AP11 AmpPac 11 Guitar Amp Isolation Package with Lid Reviews

Guitar Amp Isolation Package with Acrylic Panels, Sorber Baffles, and Lid - 34" Wide, 30" Deep, and 24" High

There’s no tone quite like true tube breakup and distortion. The only problem is that achieving breakup usually means you’re driving your amp hard and creating astonishing amounts of noise in the process. That’s where a ClearSonic AmpPac guitar amp isolation booth comes in. This portable iso booth allows guitar players to crank their amps to the max without incurring the wrath of the person running a live sound mix. This booth comes with ClearSonic’s proprietary Sorber baffles attached to the company’s acrylic panels and flexible hinges. While the AmpPac is dynamite onstage, it’s just as useful for live recordings in the studio too! AmpPac isolation booths are available in multiple sizes. Call your Sweetwater Sales Engineer to discuss which version is right for your amp.

Love this pack

By Matthew M. from Nashville, TN

Great product for home recording. I've done a couple adjustments: I already had an Aurelex Gramma pad to decouple it from the ground, so I have that on the ground underneath the amp. I bought a couple extra Sorber panels to sit behind the mics to block off reflections from the plexi baffle, works like a charm. I never AB'd it without that one panel but it sounded good off the bat so i left it.

No, this isn't a total iso box. It still makes noise, but it's not nearly as loud. I have this on the other side of my one room studio and it lets me track loudly in the same room without blowing my ears out and without worrying too much about bleeding from misc. noises (computer clicking, setting my cup down etc). I like that it isn't completely sealed because it lets the air move and gives it that open sound. The main complaint that I hear about the fully isolated boxes was that it sounds boxy - because the air is vacuumed shut and doesnt move well in a total iso box. Sure, it sounds a tiny bit better with the lid off but this was a really great solution for me.

Heat

By Lee P. from Tacoma, Washington
Music Background: former professional

Two thing that seem to concern people if both the lack of height and also the ambient resonance from the open bottom. The panels can be added to in height and purchased separate, but again an added purchase that shouldn't be necessary. The floor resonance can be solved with another product that is sold but also separate that isolates speakers from the floor. Again another separate purchase. Heat though IS a factor and can ruin an amp. Even though the picture shows an amp head in it and an iso lid on top I am not going to put my own boutique amp in it and have it ruined because of heat generated without anyway to cool it. Until they solve that I am not going to purchase one.

If it was just a few inches bigger...

By Sean from Aurora
Music Background: Degree in Music Ed, Performs regularly

I just got and assembled this isolation system and my impressions are:
1) The build quality of the clear shield is better than others I've seen
2) It cuts sound by about 60-70% (to my ears, no idea what the exact specs are)
3) It needs to be a tiny bit bigger to accommodate a 2X12. Seriously, if they would have made the baffles (rear) like 2" longer, and the plastic about 6" longer, and the top about 6" longer it would encase the amp with a microphone in front quite nicely. As it stands now, my Fender Deville barely fits with the microphone inside. It would be nice if it was a little less "snug" in the event your instrument mic has a large base, or so there's no gaps on top and to accommodate the depth of most amps. Also, If you'll notice from the picture of the item, the clear shield around it doesn't have the \/\/ type shape that you ought to have in this type of isolation. Instead it's \__/ shape.
Overall, nice build, seems quality, just needs to be a smidge bigger for most amp users. (Unless you're just playing with a single 12"... in which case just get an isolation BOX which is much preferred sort of isolation for most musicians.)

Effective

By Gart from Hickory, NC
Music Background: Hobbyist

I purchased this Iso Pack last year. I saw the last reviewer's comments and wanted to offer my thoughts to possibly help with that reviewer's situation. I purchased this to bring down the volume of my Mesa Mark V: 35 for recording. Even though the amp is only 35, and adjustable down to 10 watts, it is still incredibly too loud to play in my house.

What the previous reviewer is experiencing, I believe, is the same result I initially got as well: early reflections from the front panel feeding back into the mic. You can cure this by draping a Uhaul blanket over the inside of the front shield to absorb those reflections and/or using a small reflection filter in front of the mic. I hope this helps. Do be careful about completely covering all the openings: my only concern is the amp could run really hot and get damaged with out sufficient air flow.

Makes your mic'd tone harsh and unpleasant

By Sweetwater Customer

I bought this so that I could crank up my amp in my home studio without annoying the neighbors. It does bring down the room volume a bit, but it also makes the mic'd sound overly bright and harsh. Absolutely unpleasant /nasty and unusable for recording.

If you're going to be using this live.... not mic'd. It will muffle your sound if thats what your after, but if your going to mic the amp and put it through the PA, or record it in a studio... I would say get something better. This will ruin your tone.

For me, this was a complete waste of $. Very disappointed!

Iso package

By Steve L. from Texas

I use a Fender Deluxe Reverb and like to crank it a bit to toughen up the tone. The ClearSonic solves the stage volume problem completely under all different staging circumstances. Light, easy to carry, durable. Love it to bits.

Great purchase!

By Shawn D. from Northport AL.
Music Background: Worship Leader

Ordered two of these amp isolation packs for our church. We had two guitar amps that we needed to enclose to cut down on the stage volume while giving the sound board more control for the house speakers. These simple enclosures have made a big difference in the mix. Very easy to unpack, and put in place too. I would definitely recommend this product.

Good for particular uses

By Chris from The Colony, TX
Music Background: worship band lead guitarist

I think this product works really well, if you are using it in a similar way that I am. I play at a church with my amp head on stage and my speaker cab (1x12 Egnater cab) back stage in a large storage room, miced up. That room has concrete floors, so I needed something to keep my sound from bouncing all over the place and being noticeable through an open walkway behind our drum kit. I tried this panel enclosure. Because of how deep my cab is, I couldn't easily fit a small mic stand inside. Once I switched to a Sennheiser e609 mic that I could drape over the cab, it worked good. I could keep my amp up at a decent volume without hearing too much on stage (just enough sound to know that it's on). This particularly works at cutting down the high frequencies escaping. Low frequencies seem to get out more. For me that was perfect, because my cab is often rather bassy anyways, so this caused less of that to get into the mic. However, if you want to use it at home for quiet recording, keep in mind that some low frequencies will escape it, so it might not be a solution if you want to virtually silence all noise outside the enclosure. For most guitar situations on stage, it's the high/mid frequencies that are overwhelming, so this really deals with that issue great. Definitely helps a lot to control harsh stage noise.
