Orange Crush Pro 120 - 120-watt Solid-state Head - Orange Reviews

120-watt, 2-channel Solid-state Amp Head with Volume and 2-band EQ (Clean Channel), Volume, Gain, and 3-band EQ (Dirty Channel), Master Volume, Effects Loop, and Digital Reverb - Orange

Taking a cue from Orange’s prestigious Rockerverb, the Crush Pro 120 packs 120 watts of classic Orange tone into a stage-ready 2-channel guitar amp head. The Crush Pro 120’s vintage-inspired Clean channel ranges from sparkling chime to a bluesy crunch, while its Dirty channel yields everything from classic hard rock punch to ultra-high-gain metal distortion. You get a full complement of tone-shaping controls for dialing in your sound, plus a fully buffered, low-impedance effects loop for integrating your pedalboard. Three built-in digital reverbs are onboard to add space and dimension to your playing. Warm, rich, and just a tad gnarly, the Orange Crush Pro 120 head is teeming with Orange’s trademark sound, style, and reliability. Pair it with your favorite cab, and you’ll be primed to rock.

Pretty Darn Good

By Mike H. from Indiana on October 29, 2020 Music Background: Weekend Warrior

I purchased this initially to use as a backup amp, as my tube amp was starting to act a little squirrely after a re-tube. As a gigging musician (no big thing, just small clubs) I was feeling a little nervous about owning only 1 amp. To be perfectly honest, I'm not a huge fan of the Orange distortion on channel 2. It seems both too loose and too fizzy to be usable. That said, I tried using the clean channel as an pedal platform, and HOLY COW this amp is incredible that way. It pushes a ton of air, and the low end can get massive with my Friedman BE-OD. This amp allows me to go from country to rock to metal simply by swapping out drive pedals on my board. I suspect I will be done with my two remaining tube amps at some point in the near future. I just don't need them anymore, the small clubs I play really don't allow me to crank them anyway, stage/studio volume will be reduced (always a good thing) and I'll be happy to be rid of the maintenance expense and reliability issues.

I did notice that speaker selection makes a HUGE difference in sound quality.....more so with this amp than others. For those of you unhappy with the sound you are getting from this amp you should consider trying it with different combinations of speakers and cabs. I initially tried it with a V30 loaded 2x12, and was not at all happy with the sound (very thin & brittle). Switched over to a Celestion G12H loaded cab. Better......but still lacked some low end punch. Switched to my Orange 2x12 loaded with Eminence Swamp Thangs. BAM! What a HUGE difference!

As a stand-alone amp I would give this 3/5 stars. Channel two seems lifeless, loose, and fizzy but in fairness it did open up nicely once I fronted it with an OCD drive. I was planning on just using it that way until I used it as a pedal platform. As a pedal platform I give this 5/5 stars. It is just so incredible sounding. My pedals have never sounded this good.

Overall Score 4/5. If you are looking for a maintenance free pedal platform, look no further.

Sounds fantastic right alongside my tube heads.

I bought this amp to practice and record with at low volume but also to take to the stage if I want. I've played Engl, Bogner, Mesa and Peavey tube heads extensively over the years but specifically bought this Orange CR120 because it is solid state and none of the others remotely sound like an Orange. I also love the consistency, clarity/articulation and response of transistor amps. I'm playing this through a 2x12 cab with Celestion G12T-75 speakers.

The tone is excellent. It sounds inspiring at low volume and just blossoms at higher volumes. It does sound solid state in its gain structure but while other solid state amps I've played sound a little cold or thin, this one feels more like a tube amp. It has a great multidimensional tone that browns out in the low mids on the sustain. The Orange gain is a bit fuzzy but with body, clarity and an ever present seemingly clean fundamental tone. This amp can sing. I love it.

The CR120 is a great amp that I'd be happy using in any situation for any style of music.

Orange Crush 120 Head

By Richard from Ontario Canada on April 30, 2020 Music Background: Gigging Musician

I've been playing guitar for 40 years,I am a working musician, I've had just about every popular amp available(Marshall,Mesa,Peaveyetc...) I play mostly hard rock and 80s metal,(think Ozzy the Randy years,Vanhalen,Aerosmith.. )This anp is perfect for that style of music, the amp really suits my gear well, using the 4 cable method, the sound is excellent,I'm not missing tubes at all, very dependable, the eq is perfect, very easy to dial in a great tone, the build quality is excellent,I highly recommended buying this amp, excellent value for your money AAAA++++

Very Impressed !

By Bill on January 30, 2020

I am a tube amp nut as my Sweetwater Sales Engineer can attest ! Although being a Marshall nut, at one time in 2013 I did purchase an Orange 100 watt head and was very impressed with the tone and build quality. Fast forward to 2020 - after seeing one of those pop-up ads… I saw a picture of a 120W Orange head going for less than $500 ! How is that possible ? Well I headed over to Sweetwater and saw the price was correct, BUT it was solid state, not tube. However due to my very positive experience with the Orange head I had, the price of the CR120H and moreover the numerous (50 when I read them) 5 star reviews, I decided to give it a shot. After all, if I did not like it, there would no problem to return it. That's not going to happen - Sweetwater isn't getting it back lol. It was a bit strange turning it on the first time since no standby and waiting for tubes to warm up. It sounds incredibly close to a tube amp and could probably fool a lot of tube amp enthusiasts ! The only negative I have is not about the amp, but Orange in general not supplying a footswitch, and even if they did you still have to buy cables for them. In any event you'll enjoy this amp for sure !

Great affordable amp for anything from country to death metal

By James from Richardson on January 27, 2020 Music Background: Guitar player, Engineer

Ive been playing in death metal bands for years. Ive owned a mesa dual rec, bugera 333, Peavey viper tube 120 head and even a marshall avt 150. This amp is the easiest to use best sounding with no repair worrys. The clean is crystal clear but crank the gain and you get an awesome crunch. The OD channel with an overdrive and noise gate in front makes this amp go from slipknot to cannibal corpse esc levels of brutality. The effects loop takes eq pedals and modulation pedals amazingly. Its loud as hell if you need it to be. You wont regret buying this amp.

My favorite amp

By Josh from Minnesota on January 25, 2020 Music Background: Basement player

I waited a while before doing this review to get a good amount of time on it before reviewing. I’ve had this orange crush pro 120 head and two orange open back vintage 30 cabs for 4 months now and I’m planning on playing this amp till it dies or I die lol!!! I play the typical doom, desert and basic rock stuff and it shines at that greatly. I use a swollen pickle fuzz and a catalinbread nagaviper to boost the fuzz and its what I want for tone I use guitars with EMGs and passive pickups with great results

Outstanding

Orange Crush 120

By Brett on October 30, 2019 Music Background: Singer/Guitarist

The Crush is probably the absolute best solid state amp I have ever played, and I have played quite a few. It has the natural response and feel close to a tube amp. It doesn't quite have the brightness in the cleans that you would find in a rockerverb, but for the price point it beats anything else I've played.

Monster

By Danny Ray from Hatboro pa on August 19, 2019

Don"t be worried what tube snobs will say. This thing kills. It"s super loud and clear at the same time. No harshness when cranked at band level volumes. It"ll easily handle any size venue, and remember most if not all larger venues will mic your cabs anyway. My favorite thing about the amp is the clean channel. With the effects loop it handles all 8 of my pedals with ease. I prefer stacking my overdrives so I have no need for the dirty channel. The dirty channel on my amp sounds good until you get to half way and it produces a huge amount of hiss. It"ll do the real hard rock, chunky boarder line metal kind of tone but the noise makes it unusable. I have 3 over drives on my board. Soul food is always engaged and I stack it either with an ocd or my wampler clarksdale depending on the vibe I"m going for. This thing is a steal for the price point. I keep thinking about upgrading to a tube amp but then I snap out of it and realize I"m completely satisfied with this little monster. I can keep all my setting and just lower the volume when my wife needs quiet time, and still get a great tone, which I might lose that with a tube amp. Ive never heard a solid state amp in all my years of playing that sounds this good. This thing can strip paint off the walls with its huge, full, heavy sound. Just buy it

Awesome!

Great

By todd on February 8, 2019 Music Background: 50 years Rockin

I love this amp. Period. Its been reliable. The reverb ok but so what we all have reverb pedals, right!

I previously had a Hughes & Kettner 20 Tubemeister. That blew in 4 weeks, then I got the Marshall DSL 20,
the Clean channel blew in 3 weeks. So now I have the Crush and its a game changer.

Ill keep this simple, Orange has a winner here and Im Impressed. The only thing I would mod is if they are going to put in digital reverb, why not add a delay and chorus circuit.

Same as below

By J~ from Illinois on January 16, 2019

Can"t say enough about the clarity I get from my Mexican telecaster even when the gain is jacked. I run this head through a home made 2x12 with vintage 30"s. She"s mean. I don"t use a distortion pedal anymore. I bought the Orange footswitch to toggle between my clean and dirty channels. The "distortion" you get from the dirty channel is incredible. Believe.

5 Star Solid State

By Bruno from Ohio on October 5, 2018 Music Background: I like to play

Here is another 5 star review. This amp sounds amazing through my 2x12 OB cabinet. Although it is Solid State it does sound killer. I feel there is something missing when comparing to an actual tube amp but the difference is minor. I did an A/B test with the CR 120 and a 2K dollar tube amp and this amp held its own. For the price it is worth every penny. I do like this amp, which is good, because I bought it. Thanks to Sweetwater for being amazingly amazing.

Amazing amp

By Dave Gurr from Utah on October 4, 2018 Music Background: Performing musician for 30+ years

Received this in black tolex..just not a fan of bright orange. Anyhow I am running this into a 2x12 cab and it didn't take me long to dial up a nice fat tone that fits perfectly for what my band plays which is alt rock. Next I dialed in a clean tone and matched up the volume level with the dirty channel to even things out. Took a few minutes and I was off to rehearse with my band. I wanted to simplify my rig and that's what I have done. This amp, a 2x12 cab and a foot switch to bounce from channel to channel.

Orange Crush CR120H Amp Head

By Rick Hill from Salem, OH on September 3, 2018 Music Background: 53yrs. Touring/Studio/Local Pro Musician

I've been using the Orange CR120H Amp for about 3mos. and the Amp sounds Great! It has a lot of Punch that works well for me as I play Classic Rock and Blues. The Amp is very responsive to your Pick Attack and cleans up nicely if you don't have the Gain on the Drive Channel Cranked! The Clean Channel can sound Crystal Clear or you can get just an edge of Overdrive if you wish. Works nicely with Single Coils or Humbuckers. I run this Head with 1 or 2 Orange PPC112 Cabs depending on the Venue. The sound is Fantastic!! It takes Pedals very well and there's NO hiss. It also has an Effects Send and Return which works very well also. I've read other reviews that say this Amp has a Dark sound but I don't hear that from it. In fact I have to run the Lows a little higher, maybe it's the Guitars I use with it (Gibson LP Standard, Fender Telecaster, PRS Custom 24 and Gretsch w/Filter-Trons) but I don't seem to have this problem others have stated.

Both Channels are Great, I can get a nice Bluesy sound from the Overdrive Channel or Full on Metal (not my sound of choice). From the Clean Channel I can get Sweet or Chimey Cleans to just a touch of Breakup. Orange does NOT make a Cover for this Amp. I spoke to them and was told their Covers are made for All their Tube Amps, so I got the closest fit. It will need rehemed as the Cover fits perfect length and depth wise but is a little tall for the Amp which is not a big deal and works fine as is, just a little taller than the Amp. I do wish Orange would offer the Pedal as part of the Amp purchase but I guess I'm old school as I've noticed not too many Manufacturers do this anymore!

A Great job done by my Rep Delvin Wolf!! He researched everything and then got back to me before my purchase so I was aware of everything before hand.

As Always Great Service from my Rep and Sweetwater!! Amp was delivered on time and NO problems out of the Box!! Again In my opion I believe Sweetwater is the ONLY ON-Line Store to purchase Quality Equipment at a GREAT Price, and their Sales Team and Tech Department are second to NONE!!

orange solid state= great amp at great value

By Austin Lee Cunningham on May 5, 2018

solid state has always been my thing. this amp is is it absolutely perfect for what I need it for. loud, has oompf, great with pedal setup of any kind, playa metal like a beast mind you as well. It dials very easily so you can get your sound you want very quickly and without a hassle. one of the biggest things about this amp though is the reverb control. superb and it gives any tube amp reverb a run for it's money. just go ahead and grab it and add it to your collection. great for studio and for shows

HOLLY AMP!!!!!!!

By Maggot from St. Paul, Nebraska on March 20, 2018 Music Background: Heavy, Pro

This thing is just a monster.
The glassy clean channel is just astonishing. It's very affordable and it has the same qualities as a tube amp. I bought one off this website and I'll tell you what. It is dreamy. The distortion/overdrive is insane. I don't like pretty effects. You will enjoy.

Solid State?? Really??

By Justin Robbins from Barre, MA on March 19, 2018

I have a 6505+, TSL100, 57 Twin and the tone this produces, is unbelievable! It was cloned after the Rockerverb and it does an outstanding job of replicating the overall sound of it.
The clean channel is great itself, add some reverb and the clean just shimmers. The dirty channel sounds amazing. It has 4 gain stages and you can dial in most any tone. From a Plexi type to a thick, rich crunch. All without sounding muddy at all. The controls are super easy to navigate as well.
Overall, it"s a great amp for the money. Definitely loud enough to gig with and tame enough for bedroom volumes. Just wish it can with a foot switch.

Really is THAT good

By Jim Woolsey from Edgewater, MD on February 16, 2018 Music Background: Bedroom player extraordinaire (at least in my mind)

Read many reviews before purchasing this amp, but still couldn't get past the NO TUBES issue. Finally bit the bullet and well I'm now writing a review.
Clean cleans
Orange dirt
Great pedal amp
Great Orange look
So responsive to pick attack.
Would HIGHLY recommend and because of the available tones this will be a keeper.
Thank you Orange!

Insane!

By galen mccarty from Downers Grove, IL on February 4, 2018

Just got this amp, opened the box and plugged it in then Wow! Clean headroom like nobody's business and the Crunch this amp puts out is simply amazing. No more tube amps for me.

Yes!!!

By Dusty from America on January 14, 2018

So as many have said..The clean channel is amazing. And the range from clean to dirty is so easy to dial in what you want for blues a nice country sound or whatever you wish. I personally play heavy modern metal and it does not lack in any way. I like my tones with more dialed back gain and a good amount of mids and this amp delivers very well and sounds very good in my recordings. For the "djent" metal artist it'll need some help but that's not my style so it works well for my as it sits. However it is very receptive to pedals. For the price and sound quality I would recommend it to anyone.

Solid solid state

By Erik from Las Vegas on August 28, 2017 Music Background: Garage Band so far

Very Happy with the service and delivery still working on adjusting everything to get desired tone. Dirty channel has great gain. My garage band buddies told me I was too loud, which was the first time they have ever said that to me so i took it as a good sign. Also bought the Orange 4x12 120 to go with it. Will be enjoying them both for a while.

Incredible

By Sweetwater Customer from Massachusetts on August 26, 2017

I was contemplating my next amp for months, and I'm incredibly happy I went with this one. I purposely waited to review this to make sure I was over the "honeymoon" period of ownership. I bought this at the beginning of the Summer, and I haven't touched any of my other amps since. My previous amp was a Mesa Boogie Studio Caliber combo, and I really did love it. However, it was beginning to have some mechanical issues, and I couldn't fix it myself. I was convinced that I would never find a replacement for it unless I spent crazy amounts of cash. This amp proved me wrong. The first thing to understand about this amp is that you're buying it to get a specific kind of tone. It's not going to do a super tight modern metal tone unless you do some serious dialing, but instead it sounds like the most amazing British sound you've ever heard. If you're a fan of Marshall, this basically sounds like a cranked Marshall with way more bass. Don't let that fool you though, the clean channel is absolutely amazing. It's not overly bright, and the clean channel with a drive in front of it is probably my favorite sound this amp produces. Unlike other solid sates, this amp handles pedals very well. Every pedal I own sounds amazing with it. It's loud enough for whatever you do, it's versatile enough to play any style, and it's made me beyond happy. This amp will not disappoint you.

Just Get It

By Alec Dockery from Castle Rock, CO on June 30, 2017 Music Background: Bedroom PLayer GoD

Once you play one of these, the tone starts to grow on you, like a pair of underwear you've worn for two weeks straight...haha but seriously this amp ROCKS! The Clean channel is to DIE for too. Don't buy a $2000+ head just because it has tubes...

Crushed It!!!

By J. Baker from S.C. on June 27, 2017

If you're looking for a solid state head with actual power....this is the one! I spent alot of time reading and watching reviews before i made the purchase. There was really No Bad reveiws i found. It can get real loud if needed and still sounds good at low volume. The dirty channel has a bit of crunch and can be enough if thats all you want, but I just use the clean channel with my pedal board running through. Its Crisp, Clear and will hold all the saturated distortion and effects I throw at it and still keep its tone. It does have an effects loop and I run my delay through that. It does not have a line out , but i just run a line out to mix from the last pedal and its fine. Also, the clean channel has no mid knob, which would have been nice...but, if you use an eq, you can controll it all you want. It's a quick and easy head to use. Spend a little time and dail it in to get your tone and sound...then crank it up and enjoy the jams!

Versatile Powerhouse

By Sweetwater Customer on June 16, 2017

I was looking for a high power amp head to use as a solid clean platform into a Fender Bassbreaker 2x12" cabinet I own, and the CR120H did not disappoint. It has tons of headroom and pairs nicely with my small gigging pedal board (Keeley Super Phat Mod overdrive, Keeley 4-knob compressor, TC Spark Mini Boost, EHX Holy Grail Nano, Boss TU-3) to make a variety of clean to moderate overdrive tones. Despite expecting not to use it, the on-board dirty channel is very usable with a wide range of sounds available. The build quality is solid; the pots rotate smoothly without crackles, the 1/4" jacks hold cables securely, and the chassis is very thick steel.

Criticisms? Mine has a strong glue odor, most likely a result of being wrapped up for shipping shortly after production, but it is slowly dissipating from sitting out. The reverb selector switch feels a little flimsy, but it is tucked between knobs taller than itself for protection so I am not too worried. Also, the included IEC power cable didn't really feel that secure in the amp's socket, so I am using a better one from my cable collection. Nothing major to report.

Overall, it's a great amp at a great price and I look forward to performing with it every week!

Amazing

By Goozemann on May 25, 2017 Music Background: Former gigging musician now hoarder

Let me start by stating that I'm a gear hoarder. Yes I know it's an OCD disease. But i have a good job, and when I see a guitar or amp I must possess I just buy it. So now I have over 50 guitars and 30 amps in the house.....hey at least it ain't empty pizza boxes. Amp wise, i got several Marshalls, Boogie, Fender, Vox, Reeves, Soldano, EVH, and on and on. All tube. For the price of this i had to try it. Believe me, folks, when I tell you, Orange has nailed this. The reviews are correct.....this comes so close to the sound and response of a tube head you will be shocked. And for the price of two pedals, it's one of the biggest bargains here. Of course if cash is no object, I'd get the real McCoy.....or get this and with leftover get a Clapton Strat!!

Best Money I have spent

The amp is amazing, it takes pedals like a dream, and low end, my 7 string in dropped c sounds so evil...

The epitome of tone.

By MB on March 11, 2017

I've been longing to have an orange half stack ever since I was fifteen. I decided on this head after watching numerous videos on YouTube. The wait of all those years (8) was definitely worth it to leave Marshall behind. This head is incredible! The head's clean channel has just blown me away not only by its impeccable tone, but also its responsiveness. I run the head through an Orange Crush Pro 4x12 cab and I get just as excited every time I play it just as I did the first time. I've never used an amp's dirty channel but rather rely on distortion pedals for grit, therefore I can't really comment on its dirty channel. However, I can say it handles effects pedals perfectly and I love when I turn on my distortion, though I'm sure the neighbors don't. The search for that perfect tone can be daunting but if you're looking for a clean tone that can't be described other than the epitome of tone, pick this head up! Any gear head will love the analog circuitry so that's also a plus. I know for sure that I will be sticking with this head, and Orange in general, for the rest of my musical career. I would replace it in a heartbeat if something ever happened to it. Plus, the fact that it has a perfect rating on here can't be a coincidence.

Get one!

By Eric Hensley from Arkansas on December 20, 2016

I love this head! It is versatile and simple. Great tone that is, as you've heard before, full of warmth. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because my taste wishes it was just a wee bit brighter, but I've been able to reach my goal with additional EQ. I play in stereo with my Marshall and the result is just phenomenal.

A great amp

By Sahan Ulgen on December 17, 2016 Music Background: Audio engineer

I was very skeptical in the beginning so I bought this only as a back up for my tube amps and for using as a practice amp to save tube life. Cr120 sounds great and it is all analogue! The dirty channel is amazingly as great as many good tube amps' high gain channel and it reaches to a point where even trained ears wouldn't distinguish if this is a solid state amp when listening in a song. The difference between a top notch tube amp and this is however obvious when compared directly in single track. I tried many SS amps that emulate something or that claim to have a tube sound and all came and went. This just stays!!! The weakest point of this amp is the clean channel like many other orange amps with no surprise. I wouldn't recommend it for the clean channel though. Pointless to compare to a great tube amp if you can afford it and maintain it because the comparison would be between apples and grapes but it is a great amp on its own. You appreciate it even more if you buy a 3k tube amp and spend $ to change the power tubes every year or get frustrated with blowing fuses and end up searching a maintenance facility close by:)))) So it's a no brainer!

Amazing

By Alex from Chicago on September 27, 2016

Sounds amazing and super easy to use and nice to use with pedals.

The Future of SS amps

By Sweetwater Customer on August 16, 2016

I am writing this review after a year of frequently gigging and practicing with this amp.

So right off the bat, a few recommendations:

If you're not a metal player, use a strat-type guitar. Anything with single coils. It allows to you explore past the dark clean channel Orange is known for. Dirty channel with a strat will restrict you to vintage tones, but it absolutely nails them. Sounds better than any of the Marshall JCM series heads.
With a LP,I had to dime the treble. the clean channel is just so dark and sounds like your guitar tone knob is dimed. With a strat you've got a much more dynamic clean channel.

Now, if you're a metal person... This amp will get so heavy if you know what you're doing. The cr120 is not far from the Rockerverb at all. In fact, in recordings you can't tell the difference. Put a Fulltone OCD pedal in front of this thing just as a little boost and it screams. Check out Ryan Fluff's review of the amp on youtube.

A Cabinet:
At home I play this amp through a ppc112 cab. Yes I know it's risky, but I never turn it up at home. When I'm with the band, I'll play it through a Mesa 412 and the master volume never goes past 4. This thing pushes some SERIOUS AIR. Really, it sounds like a different animal through a 412.

I absolutely love this amp. You really can't tell that its not a tube. It sounds better the more you turn it up.

If you want to see more videos of it in action, go to Dave Simpson's channel on youtube. Fantastic vids (50+ of them) that showcase the amp.

Awesome amp! Tone is great. Closest sound I've ever had to a tube head. Really great cleans really nice dirty channel. Lots of room to get it dialed it to exactly what you want. A great amp with lots of power.

Really Good

By derrick from Cincinnati, OH on April 18, 2016 Music Background: Former Professional, Hobbiest

I've always been a fan of the Orange amps. They have a unique bite to their tone. I was really surprised to hear it in this solid state amp as well. For the last 6 years I have been playing a Peavey XXX through a Marshall 1960a cab. My biggest question with this amp was could it satisfy me going from tube to solid state. It does... From most reviews I have read it seems it gets great reviews on everything except metal. I believe it does this best. It's not as saturated as a Triple rectifier or a Peavey XXX. It has more pronounced defining tone. It does sound very similar to the Rockverb. This will be my main amp and the first time it has not been tube in decades.

Luscious Tone!

By Sweetwater Customer on February 4, 2016

This amp is all about producing warm, accurate, and detailed tone. I've played a lot of amps in my day. Solid state, tube, digital, etc., but this amp sticks out. It easily competes with some amps that cost much, much more. If you're a blues, jazz, or classic rock player, then look no further! $450 for this is an absolute steal, and I'm amazed by the fact that there aren't any tubes in it.

It sounds amazing!!!

By Harry Alvarez from Marietta, GA on September 24, 2015

This is definitely the best Solid State Amp in the market, nobody can't beat the price. Very well made high quality construction and the most important thing, you don't have to worry about tubes and expensive maintenance any more!

It's just sick!

By Roger from Fort Worth, Texas on September 23, 2015 Music Background: Hobby

I'm currently running this head through an Mesa 4x12 angled cabinet. The cabinet has celestion vintage 30's in it. It sounds fantastic. I have also ran it through my carvin, closed back, 2x12 cabinet with celestion vintage 30's. It sounds just as good, but with a little less bass.

In addition, I have it hooked it up "4 cable method" with the boss GT-100 effects unit. No issues with the effects loop, works just as good as my Carvin V3m tube head.

I am very pleased with the tone of the Orange Crush 120H and will be using this to save tube hours on the Carvin V3m head. A matched "JJ" set of pre-amp and power-amp tubes is about $100, which could easily pay for the Orange Crush 120 head in a year of heavy use.

The only thing that Orange could do better, would be two offer a 3 channel setup, like my Carvin V3m. If they did, I would pay more to have that feature.

Cheers!

Orange CR120H

By Joshua Miller from Moon, PA on July 13, 2015 Music Background: 15+ years guitar/bass

Great amp with plenty of power. The clean channel works very much like one on a tube head in the sense that the more you crank it, the more it breaks up and gives a bit of grit to the clean tone. The dirty channel is great for the vintage dirty tones. I prefer a more modern distortion sound so I had to do a bit of research prior to buying this to make sure I could get the sound that I preferred. With little effort I was able to get what tone/distortion that I like. I paired this with the Orange PPC212-OB cabinet and they couldn't be more perfect for each other.
Like I said earlier, I did have to put some effort into getting a more modern distortion tone so if you like that as well, definitely try it out before you buy it.
I love solid state heads and am very happy that Orange finally made one. It sounds killer and is built like a take.

Been using a Marshall JCM 2000 for years. Picked this up for gigging to save wear and tear on that and now....I have a Marshall for sale.

Orange Goodness

By Kelly from Texas on June 9, 2015 Music Background: Studio hound, tone seeker

I've read a lot of reviews, watched a ton of videos and studied this amp head extensively before making the decision to try it for myself. I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed with the work and effort that the minds at Orange put into this amp. 100% analog Solid State from Orange Amplification puts a smile on my face a mile wide.
Based on the Rockerverb series, you can definitely identify RV tones and vibe. Certainly the tones you derive from the CR120 will be based on the cab you run through it. I'm using a closed back solid birch Emperor 212 8ohm with Celestion V30s, and it sounds other worldly.
I'm in love with the clean tones dialed up around 10:00ish - 12:00ish. There is an ever present dirt factor from 12 up that will take your cleans from pristine to killer breakup.

Completely analog, save for the digital reverb circuit, this amp would fool many tone snobs and tube aficionados. The reverb is brilliant, and you can select between spring, hall or plate. On the dirty channel, beginning around 1:00 - 3:00 you'll be treading into Tony Iommi land. It just gets super squishy from there (in a very good Orangey squishy way). The more master volume you heap the thicker and more tube-like the response. However- it is not a tube amp- but really once we start talking Rokerverb vibe this thing comes really close to achieving just that.
Side by side with a RV you will hear the difference... However it is tube maintenance free and will serve well in my studio or as a backup. I will be using this for more than just a back up, trust me.

Jon at Sweetwater was awesome in my customer service experience, calling me to let me know when it would be in and then following up to let me know it was on it's way. Nothing but love for the guys at Sweetwater!

CR12 H

By dAn from Fla on April 3, 2015 Music Background: 50 year pro

After playing tube amps for 50 years I've finally found a good solid state to take there place. You can use the dirty channel and just roll back the guitar's volume to clean it up. The best was when a guitar player from the crowed said it sounded like 2 AC 30's. I paired it with a 2x12 ob from Orange.. I highly recommend.

Orange CR120-H

By ROBERT HART from NEW SALISBURY, IN on March 24, 2015 Music Background: Old Rocker

Being a Guy who grew up in the late 60' and 70' their were tons of Solid State Amps. I used Sunn Concert Lead' Acoustic Control' Kustom' solid state amps. They all were loud but had just horrible gain or crunch' In the day they were decent we thought. But this new Orange has to be heard to be beleived. I have many Tube Heads' Marshall' Univox' Fender' Engl' ect but this new CR120 just sounds great. A real thick crunchy sound. I think I like it better than my Marshall. The reverb is excellent also. I am using it with 2 Avatar cabs with Vintage Celestron 12in speakers. The sound is just killer. And the price is hard to beat. Thanks Sweetwater for your fast shipping and support from Ty. Thanks Bob

Outstanding Amplifier

By CCC on February 6, 2015 Music Background: Professional Musician

I have always been interested in solid state amps for all of the usual reasons: low maintenance, cost, reliability, etc. But I've never found one that sounded good enough to be my main amp. This amp is the exception. The hype is real. This amp could be double the price and still be worth the purchase. Now-- one thing to keep in mind: it is still a solid state amp and the response is still very solid-state-- but this amp in particular has a very refined response. Additionally, the tonal characteristics on the gain channel rival many all-tube amps that have four digits in their price tag. The only criticism I have for this particular amp is that the clean channel does not have that pristine quality that many other big-name solid states do-- but let's be honest: you don't buy an Orange for the cleans, you buy them for the gain channel-- and in that respect this amp delivers... Orange set the bar pretty high here and other manufacturers would do well to sit up and pay attention.

Sounds Awesome.

The tones you can dial in with this thing! I play Versatile styles from Jazz, Rock, and a little bit of metal. It has very nice cleans, turn up the bass knob to get that nice jazz tone.

The stages of gain on the dirty channel are pretty tasty. The reverb is just right. This thing can get so loud! You won't be disappointed if you want good value.

Blows all other solid states away. Best bang for the buck.

AWESOME

By Richard Papa from malden,ma on March 21, 2014 Music Background: Pro musician

I was totally blown away by this amp. The best thing; cr120 has the warmth of a tube amp but its a solid state. Probably the best solid state amp out there. The clean channel is bright and chimey and you can overdrive it using its master volume. The dirty channel has 4 stages of gain and responds very nicely to pick and to fingers. I was running it through a 2x12 marshall cab and cr120 sounds incredible. The digital reverb is very nice and adds a nice feature to the amp. the reverb is the only digital part of this amp.No hiding behind his amp,its you and your playing and your guitar. Thanks Cliff Cooper and Adrian Emsley for adding an affordable "rockerverb" to the line.

Great Amp

By Rod from Bradford, PA USA on March 9, 2014 Music Background: 20 year musician

This thing is awesome. I had been looking for a solid state amp for awhile, didnt want the expence of tubes and care. Ran across the Orange 120 and just was blown away. If you are looking for an inexpensive alternative to tubes you will not be dissapointed. I would recomend this amp to everyone!

One hell of an Amp

By Kris from Phoenix on February 19, 2014 Music Background: Singer, Guitarist, plays in a band professionally.

When I got this amp I had decent expectations for it, considering its a Orange Amp, but what I got exceeded my expectations. Don't underestimate this amp even thought it does not have tubes. BEST SOLID STATE AMP I HAVE EVER PLAYED BY FAR. It is light years ahead of any solid state I've played. I just used it in a large outdoor show with my band and it easily kept up with my lead guitarist's Crate Blue Voodoo. The tone is amazing, and it handles pedals like a champ. Clean is great, and the dirty channel has amazing range in the gain. You can do anything from Jazz to Metal with this amp. The reverbs are also very good. If you are looking for a great sounding amp that wont break the bank, or a solid backup that you can rely on, this is it. I would suggest this amp to anyone, it is well worth the price.

Built like a tank, all their gear is.

By Morse from Arroyo Grande, Ca on January 20, 2014 Music Background: primary keyboards, piano, secondary guitar--classical & progressive rock

This is subjective as always. It has plenty of power for pretty much a large show if need be. The overdrive is like a pallet of colors. Their all different but no rules. Its very powerful and different from other amps. Compare it to my present arsenal of bogner, blackstar, vox marshall, fender. That is why I have a variety and most do. It has warm cleans but not sterile. It sounds like two different amps in a theil mesa 1x12 and then marshall 4x12. Bottom line is it occupies a unique avenue of needed sound for the guitar. Great deal here.

Way To Go Orange

By Kenny H. from IL on January 9, 2014 Music Background: experienced in guitar and singing

I have known about the Orange company now for a while but was never that crazy about the orange tolex covering. Then one day I stopped in at a local music store and the owner had the little OR15 tube amp head. He asked me if I had ever played thtrough an Orange amp and I shook my head no. I plugged in a Fender Squier Tele and BAM! This thing ROCKED! It is a great little beast but it had the orange covering and I was looking for something with 2 channels and in a different colored covering and he said that he had the CR120H in a black covered cab. This thing is sweeeet! NO tubes and built like a tank. The chassis is thick gauge steel with well thought out build quality and components with NO knob looseness or jack looseness and no headphone jack to short out and cause speaker to cut in and out like the Fender Mustang III V.1 that I had. Impressive clean channel and tubelike dirty channel. I bought it based on the sound and build quality of the OR15. I think Orange has got me hooked and I will most likely buy more Orange products in the future. Thank You ORANGE!
