Fantastic Multi-Purpose Snare

By Tony H from FL on May 16, 2022 Music Background: Weekend Warrior

I bought this snare on the recommendation of my sales rep, Chris. I play in an active cover band which plays a very wide range of music throughout the night and needed a solid and consistent snare that gave me the sensitivity to pull off intricate ghost notes as well as handle the louder and more powerful backbeats in standard "dance" style songs. This snare did not let me down one bit.

I have played 10 shows with this snare so far and found that it cuts very nicely through the band to provide a solid sound. We mic it up now mostly so we have the ability to run it through our IEM mix with just a touch of EQ through FoH (when needed). Additionally, the tuning ranges are very forgiving and will give you a great sound from a lower and fatter sound up through a tighter higher-end crack. I did change out the snares, but that was mostly a personal preference as the standard snare wires are still excellent. They go with me on every gig as a back-up.

Beautiful, versatile, and huge-sounding snare.

By Andy from USA on September 1, 2021 Music Background: 43-year drummer. I've played many styles, but mainly jazz fusion, metal, and rock.

For the past 25 years, I've been playing a Yamaha 6 x 14 Maple Custom (top of the line) snare, and I loved everything about it. Unfortunately, the way the lugs were designed, they fatigued, actually snapping and pulling away from the shell itself after keeping tension all these years. Metal fatigue, and because the lugs aren't made any longer, I had to trash the drum, sadly.

Enter the DW Collectors Series 6.5 x 14 snare in Black Galaxy. The finish is gorgeous, very classic, and is neutral enough to go with almost any kit (see the photo attached). I tune it decently high for an awesome and fat-sounding crack, and it really delivers. I use a Moongel right against the rim, barely on it, to keep it lively as hell but not overly metallic/ring-y sounding. I can get all sorts of tones from it: tune it higher, and it's almost like a metal snare; tuned lower, it's fatter and much more "woody."

The right-hand "5-speed" throw switch for snare tension is a quick and versatile invention, allowing 5 snare "levels" (from almost off to very tight and everywhere in between) with the flick of a switch--SMART; this can all be set and fine-tuned even further by the left-hand tension knob.

The drum has surpassed all hopes, and I actually like it more than my old Maple Custom; the extra depth and warmth just blow me away. I put a Remo coated Ambassador head on it, and the snare just sings. I hit decently hard and use mainly rimshots, and this drum can be MONSTROUS.

Great Snare

By James Noblitt from Decatur, IN on February 2, 2020

I purchased this snare to go along with my DW Collectors Series kit. It sounds amazing. Fantastic quality. Love the MAG three position throw off. The quality of this drum is awesome! I had been playing a 5" snare and wanted to get a fatter sound. After playing this one for the past 4 months I can say this drum definitely delivers that sound. Thanks to Colton Conrad, the Sweetwater Sales Engineer for his help in selecting this drum (and the accompanying kit).

This is a well crafted and fantastic sounding snare drum,
Lot of Snap and can be tuned high or low, with out standing sonic appeal.
Beautiful finish as well.

DW Collector's Snare

By Rico Horton from Mountlake Terrace, WA on February 5, 2015 Music Background: Rock Drummer

Very nice snare. really like the True Hoops and Mag throw off with triple butt adjustment. The shell looks very clean. my criticism would be Sweetwater when indicating this is SSC shell technology you need to include what variation of shell configuration it is. this is their Standard maple shell.
