Perfect Little Bass

By Jane Y.
Music Background: early music specialist, recorder player and pluckies

This is my first bass. I will give you both my feedback and my teacher's as well. First, my teacher. Teacher is professional bass player. He could not take his hands off this bass! The sound is amazing and for the price I do not think you will do better. I am a classically trained musician and this thing makes a great continuo. My teacher and I played some Handel with him on the continuo and me on recorder and it sounded great. Very easy to tune it to 415 as well. Only drawback is that I am left handed and play that way. Short term solution is I turned it upside down and that works.

Such a fun lil travel bass

By Blair T. from DORCHESTER CENTER, MA
Music Background: Beginning bass player

This thing is awesome, compact, sounds and plays great unplugged (not super loud, but again it's small) and kicks butt when plugged into an amp. I got it as a bass to mess around with on vacation and weekend trips, but it finds its way into my hands all sorts of times. Sitting in bed plucking gently while my lady reads a book, on the couch while the kids watch TV, its the best. Do recommend

Cordoba Mini II Bass

By GAD from Granger, IN
Music Background: Still getting started

The bass arrived in perfect condition earlier than estimated. Workmanship at this price point is amazing. Unplugged sound is fine for practicing the bass alone which is why I purchased it. Amplified sound is better than expected.

I am still learning the bass and hopefully I will practice more, but the difference in size is makes it difficult to go back and forth between it and my Fender Mustang (great bass also from Sweetwater). Perhaps it will be an experience that may not pan out for me, but it is too inexpensive and fun to play to return it.

A great bass at a price you can't turn down: Cordoba Mini II Bass MH-E Acoustic-electric Bass Guitar - Mahogany

By Richard B. from NY
Music Background: Brazilian, Jazz, studio and Bway show work

This instrument is really extraordinary. I'm a professional guitarist who has also played bass for decades. I was looking for a bass mini as an alternative to my P bass and huge acoustic Tacoma Chieftain. Had tried the Taylor which didn't impress me at all. That's all I needed to pull the trigger. I'll go over the features so you'll be convinced to get one ASAP:

Acoustic sound: very impressive, full, warm, satisfying without amplification. Probably works fine with another acoustic gtr or two, but depends on how hard they play.

Fingerboard is very responsive and pleasingly resonant on your fingers. Lots of sustain on both fretted and open strings. This is a SATISFYING INSTRUMENT to play. I couldn't put it down.

E strinis a bit muddy, pitch not as distinct (see comments about the .090 gauge below).

Design and craftsmanship: surprisingly excellent from top to bottom.

Really lightweight, very balanced in your hands. Some have complained about bad intonation and sharp fret edges. No issues with mine. The frets could use a nice pro polishing to avoid premature wear from the phosphor bronze covered strings. So that may cost you $ but is well worth it.

Possible Styles: The phosphor bronze wrap will definitely give you a more metallic acoustic guitar sound if the EQ onboard and amp is set flat. But with the right EQ and right hand attack, this will work for Jazz, Acoustic music, Brazilian, Salsa (play using hand mute and thumb over the soundhole), maybe some light rock if you use a pick of some sort. I'm just a fingers player.

Pickup: Super hot preamp signal. I mean HOT. Even a small 30W Acoustasonic guitar amp is plenty.

Play it through a cab with a 12" and some power and you will be blown away by the sound. Lots of tone possibilities depending on how close or far from the bridge your right hand attack is.

3 band EQ has a nice sweep for customizing your sound (those who want warmer will need to roll off treble),

Phase switch acts as a low pass filter, cleans up the sound a bit but loses some of the body.

Tuner is a nice gesture but is not as accurate as the clip-ons. I tune by matching harmonics anyway.

IMPORTANT Good news: STRING VOLUME is EQUAL across all strings. That is an absolute must if you want to use this on actual gigs.

Neck: super comfortable slim profile, 1.75" width at the nut is just the right string spacing.

Natural satin finish on body very subtle, clean.

Bridge and saddle are robust and (I think) saddle and nut are real bone.

Truss rod? YES- Allen wrench adjustment is just inside the sound hole, wrench included. My neck is totally straight, so no adjustment needed.

Action & Setup: Playable out of the box. In higher parts of fingerboard (above the 12th fret) action may become a bit high for some players- and the intonation stays pretty decent. Most players will be living in the bottom 7 frets anyway.

Strings: D'Addario set of phosphor bronze coated "multi-filament" core (made originally for the Taylor). They somehow got this 23" string scale to play the low bass notes with enough string tension to produce good volume and tone.

Gauges: 37-50-62-90 The first three string gauges are perfect. The 90 is too huge of a jump from .062 (in my opinion), and does not sound as clearly and responsive as the others (acoustically or amplified). I will be contacting D'Addario to see if they they have tried lighter gauges without them being floppy and buzzy. IBut 've gotten used to it already.

Attention CELLISTS looking for a fun travel instrument:

I've tuned this bass C-G-D-A so it is a contra cello. I can play the Bach solo suites on this and it's a blast. The typical string scale for a cello is between 26-27". This bass is a bit shorter @ 23", so that's close enough, right? The low C is a bit muddy due to the above mentioned .090 thick gauge for the E string.

Endpin Jack: Excellent metal mounting plate with screws. Very sturdy design.

Honestly, Cordoba hit this one out of the park and for an insanely affordable price. Hopefully the craftsmanship is consistently good like mine so you don't have to return it. I have to thank my great rep Judd in Artist Relations for taking good care of me all these years.

Good but has its drawbacks

By Sweetwater Customer

The bass sounds great but has a fatal flaw, common with very short scale basses, that the further up the neck you go, the more out of tune it gets. If you stay below the 5th-fret mark you'll have no issues, but any higher than that and you'll notice it sounding off.

I'm a senior beginner and a small one at that. This guitar is beautiful and fun to learn some chords. Was afraid to tune the first time but learned strings needed significant tightening.

Cordoba Mini II Bass MH-E Acoustic-electric Bass Guitar

By Walt from PA

I love this small-scale bass, the Cordoba Mini II. It's lightweight and well equipped with built-in tuner and nice electronics. I purchased this bass to teach my wife, a 70 year old, how to play bass. She loves it, and it's very easy to play. I highly recommend this bass.

Wife loves it

By Sweetwater Customer

Early present (kind of). My wife is short and wanted an acoustic-electric bass that was very short scale. This thing is about the size of a mini guitar, not a 3/4, so just know that going in. Good tuners, adequate pickup and slinky short scale make it fun for her to play. It's a great starter or for occasional, non-pro giggers.

Best Beginner Bass

By Eduardo D.
Music Background: Acoustic guitar for 1 year and bass for 5 months

This is my first bass and I have been practicing for 5 months now. This guitar is hands down easy to play and the sound even without an amp is very rich and deep. I recommend anyone who would love to start playing bass or has already been playing this budget acoustic electric bass!!!

Such a beautiful looking and sounding little bass. Love the smaller size. Good quality, well packaged, arrived quickly, and no damage from shipping. Came exactly as advertised. Definitely worth what I paid for it. :)

Cordoba Mini 2 Bass

By Sweetwater Customer

What a beautiful instrument, not only beautiful but sounds fabulous. My previous acoustic bass was to big for me and this one is perfect. The tone not even plugged in sounds big and rich. Want to add the customer service at Sweetwater is the best. Happy camper here.

Purpose Built

By 3degreesKelvin from Desert Southwest
Music Background: active learner

I have been shopping smaller acoustic basses because I have developed back problems. This little beast is quite perfect, practically weightless compared to my electric. The plugged in sound is not the same as my electric, the pickup here definitely hears more finger touches so there is a learning curve to find "my" sound. The ability to play without power is really nice, as my playing is generally in a more intimate environment not really needing to be as loud as my amp can get. However, if playing with louder instruments, this might not carry very well and need to be amplified.

Strings

By Douglas B. from CUYAHOGA FALLS, OH

Word of caution. If you change strings then DO NOT use anything other than the origional equipment strings. I tried to get fancy and use some flatwound D'Addario's and the intonation was terribly sharp going up the fretboard. So I put some origional equipment D'Addario XTB3790GS Taylor GS Mini's back on it and it stays in tune all the way up the neck.

I love this little bass

By Nicholas D. from Cleveland Heights, OH

It's perfect for its price. Only downside (which goes for any acoustic bass) is if you plug in, the mic inside of it will pick up sounds which creates a very loud hum. But I'm not knocking the review for that. Its perfect for a travel bass, and great for unplugged practice on the patio or around the fire. The projection is great due to the brass strings- the only downside to these strings is they go out of tune very easily, but the onboard tuner helps with that. It's also a beautiful little bass, very high quality.

Overall extremely happy with this purchase. Makes it very easy to practice.

Great for quiet practice and noodling

By John from ALBUQUERQUE

This is a great bass to have around for quiet practice or just noodling while watch TV. I imagine it would also be great for travelling too. Unplugged, it's loud enough for practice or jamming with another acoustic instrument (maybe not drums). Plugged in, it produces a really nice warm tone. I don't mess with the onboard eq much, but it seems to work fine. The built in tuner is a nice touch, but I feel like it's not as accurate as a standalone tuner. Overall I'm really pleased. The out of the box setup (I bought locally, not from Sweetwater) was decent enough. Just needed some minor truss rod adjustment for some 1st fret buzz on d and g.

Nice little instrument!

By Robert F. from Los Angeles, CA
Music Background: Guitarist, music maker

I bought this as a twin to my min Yamaha 6-string acoustic that lives next to my bed (when I watch the tube, I noodle on it). This thing is great! It's bigger than a ukelele, but much smaller than a full size acoustic - perfect for noodling while watching a movie.

The pros:
- the finish is rather good: even the frets feel decent at their ends
- the tuners are nice
- the sound is really good - it sounds like a bass!
- the strings that come with it are terrific (D'Addario coated phosphor bronze (many mini bass acoustic come with plastic strings)
- the setup feels pretty **** good
- one caveat: I haven't tried the electonics yet, but even if it came without, I'd want it

The cons:
- this is nitpicking here, but: the finish on the face is a tiny bit rough in places, but it seems to rub smooth with a little work

If you're looking for a small bass to practice on sitting back on the sofa or in bed (or even traveling) I highly recommend this piece.

Cordoba Acoustic Mini Bass

By Sweetwater Customer

Exceeded my expectations for an inexpensive mini acoustic bass. Plays well, electronics sound very good. It does take a while to get used to the short scale (tendency to over-reach or under-reach notes).
I used it this week in a guitar/fiddle/bass trio format and it worked flawlessly.
So incredibly light-weight that you barely can tell it's there (which is great for those of use feeling our age).
If you're in the market for this type of instrument, try the Cordoba before spending a great deal more on others.

Fun in a small package

By Sweetwater Customer

Too early to really tell, and I have only played plugged-in a couple of times, but is sounds good acoustic and amplified and is fun to play. Learning bass will inform my other guitar playing, too. The finish seems good and the action seems fine.

Great Small Bass

By Stephon from Indiana
Music Background: Hobbyist

The size of this bass makes it great for a guitar player coming over to bass. It feels pretty close to a guitar and sounds great too. It also makes a great couch bass for when you want to practice without getting your full bass rig out.

Very good but…

By Andy o. from Chicago
Music Background: Over four decades of music playing.

All the marvelous things other say is true. It's remarkable what you get. My multi year experience has been great, but:
-poor finishing of the fret ends. A bit scratchy. My luthier sorted that out for a modest sum.
-the tuner is slow to track a note so I turn the peg and wait for the new reading to show. Usable but if a Snark is handy I'll use it instead.

That's it! Enjoy! You're surely going to enjoy!

a unique lil fella!

By moth from MA

i love this guy. i'm still pretty new to both guitar and bass, fall 2021, but whew boy! i have found that practicing on this improved my hand strength immensely and has created more of an ease when playing other instruments. i know it pays to follow traditional, tried and true "rules" but they are also quite fun to break, aren't they? after trying a regular bass tuning and not being satisfied, i played around and have found a really unique drop tuning that i can't get enough of, and any time i even try any other tuning it just ain't right! haha. i'll admit i'm not too hip on all the jargon and lingo a lot of the other reviewers here use so apologies if this isn't as helpful of a review as the others, but this guy is a true beauty, photos can't quite capture its essence. feels great, very comfortable to play. the distance between its body and where it rests against mine is just perfect, thin enough where i can really wrap around it nicely and thick enough where i don't feel like a giant playing an instrument made for a mouse lol. i love the tones i get out of this thing, may just be because i'm new but i love playing it slowly and really letting each note play out and have its own moment. not sure if this will make sense, but it definitely feels more like an acoustic guitar that is very bass-y, rather than a bass that sounds a bit like a traditional guitar. like kind of more like a brother or cousin to an acoustic guitar instead of a hybrid of the two instruments. a real fun guy that i plan to cherish for life if i'm being honest. i do like the strings it comes with but i'm curious to maybe try flats of some sort in the future. string changes feel so daunting to me right now being so fresh to the game BUT i digress. if you're thinking about it, just go for it. it's well worth it! pretty lightweight too which i love, my wrists aren't in tip top shape and this is very gentle on them both when carrying/moving it and playing it.

Exactly what I needed

By Sweetwater Customer

I'm not a bass player by any means, but I needed something to record ideas and guide tracks. In conjunction with the Zoom R8, this instrument fits the bill perfectly. Compact, lightweight and easy to play...and I really like the onboard tuner.

Great little bass

By Chris R. from Loxahatchee, FL

The bass itself is beautiful. It's compact and fun to play, absolutely perfect for on the go travel. I'm a pretty large framed guy, and it doesn't ever feel too small. The sounds is rich and full, and surprisingly powerful for something so compact. Highly recommend.

Awesome Little Travel Bass!!

By Mark from Nebraska
Music Background: Playing bass for 20+ years

This little bass guitar far exceeded my expectations! I was looking for an inexpensive travel bass for an island vacation. I have a 34" scale acoustic bass I thought would be way too big for an overhead bin, and the availability for small-scale acoustic basses at the pawn shops was zero. The Cordoba Mini II Bass MH-E seemed to fit the bill. I also bought the Cordoba padded case for it.

The size was perfect for travel, but I was concerned that the smaller body would produce a much smaller sound and I'd have trouble not being heard playing along an acoustic guitar. I shopped around for a small travel-sized bass amp but all I found were small guitar amps. After consulting with Mason Hunter at Sweetwater, he explained that the built-in preamp should be able to power a small Bluetooth speaker, and recommended a ¼" to 1/8" stereo cable that would plug into my JBL Flip 4 speaker.

I just got back from vacation, and the setup worked perfectly. I traveled with my band's lead guitar player, along with our significant others. We played and sang cover songs at small bars and beach parties for a week. Playing the Mini II with a pick, I could produce enough volume to keep up if we were playing for a small group, but by plugging into my little JBL speaker I had no trouble keeping up with one or more acoustic guitars.

Out of the box set-up and playability was excellent, the sound was great, and I received many compliments on the look and sound coming out of this tiny bass. 5 stars on both the guitar and the shopping experience!!

Punches well above its price point

By Sweetwater Customer

This is a specific tool for me to meet a few unique needs: I need a small bass to play live in my Violent Femmes cover band (Going, going, Gano!) as my full size ABG is very uncomfortable due to wrist and shoulder issues. I also need a portable instrument to take to work so that I can learn cover songs on my lunch break.

I've owned two Kala UBASSes and a 25" Gold Tone micro bass fretless, but I could never bond with the rubbery strings. I much preferred the longer scale of the Gold Tone. I did find out recently that Kala is making a metal coated nylon string for the UBASS, but after seeing the demo of the Cordoba, and due to the slightly longer scale length and ridiculous price, I decided to purchase the MH-E.

There are a couple minor blemishes on the top and the ABS binding, but the instrument is really gorgeous (never mind my crap photog skills) and solidly built. The mahogany has a nice grain and the satin finish, while delicate, compliments the grain very nicely.

The unplugged volume is perfect for solo practice or jamming along to recorded tracks at a low volume. The neck needs adjustment and the truss rod nut was loose when I received it, so I gave it a turn counter clockwise to tighten it (weird). I have to reach out to my sales rep to look into how to adjust and flatten the neck. It seems to be a single action truss. Any advice on this?

The tuners also needed adjusting as they were all spun too freely, but this was a simple fix. The strings are much better feeling to me and are better suited to my pickstyle (for the Femmes band) than the poly strings of the Kala and Gold Tone, so mission accomplished on that front.

The nicest surprise was the preamp - it sounds really good through my Streamliner and GB cab. It is warm and round and doesn't have that piezo quack. The sound was balanced across the strings which is essential for me. Fingerstyle playing results in some articulate and thick notes with a nice amount of acoustic bloom. I think I can make this work without any additional outboard processing like eqs or compressors for the live gig. I'll be getting a micro combo soon, probably the new Trace 1x10 or 1x8 and I'm thrilled to be able to potentially plug in and play. The bass boost on the pre is pretty cool - not too overwhelming or boomy. The tuner is acceptable and it does turn a nice bright green when the desired note is reached, so it's easy to see.

The intonation and action need some work, however, so I might need my tech to alter the nut and bridge, but I was expecting as much (remember, this bass only cost $199).

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and inspired to practice more often. It really is a nice bass for the price, despite the minor issues. If there's any serious issues with the truss, I'll gladly exchange it for a new one.I haven't reached out to my Sweetwater rep yet, so I'll keep you all posted.

A Good Budget Bass

By Russ from Santa Cruz
Music Background: A little of this and that for over 50 years

I was looking for a simple bass guitar for my studio. I play guitar, mandolin, and ukelele, and I find a standard bass neck challenging. I've tried the U-Bass, but found the poly strings too rubbery feeling. I saw this Cordoba Mini II bass here on Sweetwater's and decided to give it a try. First, I'm happy with the fit and finish. It's very playable, and the phosphor bronze wound strings feel and sound great. The unplugged tone is warm and full, and the electronics work well. For an instrument in this price range, I'm impressed.

Cordoba Mini Bass II MH-E

By Russ R. from Soquel, CA
Music Background: A lot of this and that for over 50 years

This is a sweet little Bass guitar. I play acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin and Uke. I record in my home studio, and have been trying to get a good sounding bass line in my songs. I didn't want a full size electric bass, and I've been less than impressed with midi-based sounds. I've looked at U-Bas and some other options, but didn't like the fat rubbery strings. Then I saw this Cordoba Mini II Bass.

The Cordoba Mini II Bass is easy to fret, sounds amazing for it's size, and I'm fond of it's all mahogany construction. The phosphor bronze wound strings feel and sound great, and the electronics sound full and rich when plugged into my DAW.

This Mini Bass II fits my needs perfectly! Thanks Cordoba and Sweetwater {shout-out to Brock Andrews!} for another sweet instrument!
