Tube-Tech CL 1B Tube Optical Compressor Reviews

Single-Channel Opto-Cell Compressor with Tube Amplifier

The Tube-Tech CL 1B Compressor, introduced in 1991, is Tube-Tech founder John G. Petersen's take on classic optical compression. The CL 1B has gone on to become an industry standard found in pro studios worldwide. In fact, it's the "go-to" compressor for vocals and bass in LA and Nashville. The reason for its enduring popularity is no mystery: it delivers velvety-smooth, musical-sounding compression while preserving the clarity of the source — even when pushed hard. In operation, the CL1B is a model of simplicity, offering separate control over ratio, threshold, attack and release. Just start dialing away; you'll immediately hear what it's doing and be able to intuitively zero-in on the perfect settings. It's nearly impossible to make this compressor sound bad; beyond that, its straightforward operation is what makes the Tube-Tech CL 1B a favorite here at Sweetwater.

Serious compressor !

By James C. from Conyers, GA

The Tube-Tech CL1B is one of those compressors that just makes everything sound better without trying too hard. It's smooth, warm, and really musical, especially on vocals. I like how I can control the dynamics without killing the emotion—it just sits right in the mix. Whether I'm doing light compression or pushing it a bit more, it always feels clean and natural. Definitely a go-to piece when I want that polished, professional sound.

The GOAT of Compression for the style of vocal I'm going for

By 808 C. from Chicago
Music Background: Producer

I finally got one! Shout out to Nicholas Weaver.

It shipped to me the same day I was charged. It was at my door in under 16 hours. That's fast!

I've been trying to get my hands on a CL1b since Covid, but I didn't want to pay $ over MSRP for a used one on Reverb.

Most of the studios I work out of have one and if I'm looking to book a session, I'll look elsewhere if they don't have this compressor. It's very quick and musical with very low distortion. I'm running a Neve 1073 -> CL1B -> Lynx Aurora in my studio and it's a very clean signal. Highly recommended!

Legendary!

By Wezley from Rockford, IL
Music Background: Producer, Songwriter, Artist, Content Creator, Director

The Tube-Tech CL1B is a staple in the world of professional audio production, known for its warm, musical compression and exceptional versatility. As a classic opto compressor, it employs a combination of tube and optical technology to deliver a smooth, natural-sounding compression that enhances the character of the audio signal without compromising its integrity. It's a staple in Hip Hop, Pop, and R&B. Most major artists in the industry won't even book studio time with you unless you have a CL1B, 1073, and C800G for the vocal chain. It has become a standard.

Build Quality and Design

The CL1B boasts an elegant design, featuring a solid, all-steel chassis that exudes durability. The front panel layout is intuitive, with large, smooth, easy-to-read knobs and meters that offer precise control over the compression parameters. The unit is designed for rack-mounting, making it a suitable addition to any professional studio setup.

Sound Quality

One of the defining characteristics of the CL1B is its ability to impart a rich, warm tone to any signal it processes. The tube circuitry adds a subtle harmonic coloration, which is particularly effective on vocals, bass, and other instruments that benefit from a bit of warmth and presence. The compression itself is smooth and musical, capable of handling both gentle leveling and aggressive limiting without introducing unwanted artifacts.

The CL1B shines in its ability to maintain transparency, even when applying significant amounts of compression. This makes it ideal for tracking vocals, where maintaining the natural dynamics of the performance is crucial. Additionally, its versatility extends to mixing and mastering, where it can glue a mix together without squashing the life out of it.

Controls and Functionality

The Tube-Tech CL1B offers a range of controls that allow for precise shaping of the compression characteristics. The Attack and Release knobs provide a wide range of timing options, making it possible to tailor the compression to suit different styles and instruments. The Ratio control allows for a broad spectrum of compression intensities, from gentle 2:1 compression to a more aggressive 10:1. The Gain control provides ample makeup gain, ensuring that the output signal remains strong and clear.

One of the standout features of the CL1B is its sidechain capability, which allows for external control of the compression threshold. This feature is particularly useful in situations where dynamic control needs to be triggered by a different signal, such as ducking a music bed under dialogue.

Applications

The Tube-Tech CL1B is a versatile tool that excels in a wide range of applications. Its warm, transparent sound makes it a go-to choice for vocal tracking, where it can enhance the presence and clarity of the performance. It also works exceptionally well on bass, adding punch and definition without muddying the low end. In addition to individual tracks, the CL1B can be used on mix buses or even during mastering to add cohesion and polish to the final product.

Conclusion

The Tube-Tech CL1B is a legendary piece of gear that has earned its place in the signal chains of top studios worldwide. Its ability to deliver warm, musical compression with unparalleled transparency makes it an invaluable tool for producers, engineers, and artists seeking to elevate their recordings. Whether you're tracking, mixing, or mastering, the CL1B offers a level of control and sonic quality that few other compressors can match.

Shoutout
I have to give a shoutout to my sales rep Henry Moore in this one. He was able to secure me a CL1B very quick even though they were back ordered. I have had many sales reps in the past, but no one delivers quite like Henry. He also puts up with me being a pain, and that says A LOT, trust me lol.

If you like lattes

By Ray from USA
Music Background: Musician

This is like the cream on a good coffee. It gives it that extra creamy warm taste in your audio track. The Hardware definitely blows aware the plugin in sound and richness. I definitely recommend. May be hard to find, but if you get ahold of one its definitely worth the purchase.

Best In The Game

By Sweetwater Customer

If you are looking for a work horse compressor, this is the one! I could sit here and tell you how musical it is, or how it makes vocals sound like a slice of pizza with a cold beer on a warm sunny Saturday afternoon, but you would be best served by pulling out the ol credit card and getting one for yourself. Don't tell your wife, girlfriend or mom, just do it! Thanks to Chris and everyone at Sweetwater for being the absolute best people ever!

Pros and Cons

By Dave from Nashville
Music Background: Agressive polka hip hop.

I highly recommend these but, the thing is, it sounds like a millions freaking bucks and, it should, it's priced as such but, it's not perfect. Wha? Really?
My gripe isnt with the sound, that's perfect, it's just that the knobs bare zero relevance to the markings silk screened around them. The markings are so far off of reality you can't use them as a reference. In fact, the markings are so far off that the knobs move past the markings at least a quarter inch, IN BOTH DIRECTIONS!!!!
On top of that, the knobs on both of my units are not tightly secured. When you've reached the end of their throw it's easy to turn the pots in their holes. I'm not a hulk and I've got hundreds of knobs in my studio and these are the only units with loose pots.
I know I can easily pop the top and crank down the bolts around the pots but, seriously? At this price point there should be zero quality control issues and the markings should at least be somewhere close to what the knobs do.
For the sound, absolute perfection!!!! It does what an LA-2A does just with more control options! Just like an LA-2A, you get massive gain reduction with little to no noticeable artifacts. It just smooths out everything and gives it a buttery quality that sounds like you mortgaged your house.
The trick to a smooth perfect vocal is to go very easy on your your mic pre gain, leaving massive amounts of headroom THEN use the CL1B as the make up gain to get the volume. Buttery goodness.

CL1B Compressor

By Terry D.
Music Background: Recording Engineer, Recording Artist, Music Producer

I love this compressor. Personally I am not a fan of the stock tubes, I replaced my JJ stocks with telefunkens and spare pair just incase. This unit is great for vocals and bass GTR. I do mostly hip hop recordings so this compressor gets a workout mostly on vocals. My usual setting for this unit is set to fixed with about 10 db of gain and -15 on the threshold with about 6:1 on the ratio. It sounds smooth and silky like butter.

You can hear a major difference in this piece of equipment while using it on vocals. It's an amazing piece of equipment to have. I've been getting great results from artist coming through my studio loving the sound quality and presence that it has while recording their tracks. I'd prefer anyone to buy one.

WOW

By Kendal from Tulsa, OK
Music Background: Recording Engineer / Mixer / Musician

This compressor is just...wow. I've got dbx 160s and Distressors and there is just something special that this thing does that the others don't do. It's the tone, and the smoothness. On a vocal or a bass guitar it's absolutely incredible. Also amazing on getting really pumpy room mics. It does take a little while to get used to, and it's a bit pricey as far as its versatility goes (my reason for 4.5 stars) but whatever you run through it generally sounds much better. Acoustic guitar is pretty good, not amazing though. But man, bass and vocals - holy cow!

We did some A/B against the plugin, and to be honest the plugin got close as far as the "gain reduction" and "control" goes, but the tone of it was a little more harsh, especially when it was really clamping down. The hardware is nice and clear, but has a smoothness to the clarity, not a harshness. I find myself using it on bass, vocals, electric leads, synths, pianos, it really is a standout piece.

My favorite compressor for bass

By Jordan S. from Marianna, Fl
Music Background: Engineer, musician, producer

I usually use a Neve 1073 into a LA-2A for my bass rig. I recently flew in to play a session and didn't bring my rig. I ran through a Vintech 1272 into a CL-1B. Pure sweetness. Thick rich tone smooth compression. Will definitely be adding one to my rig and studio soon! A must have! Sounds great on vocals too

The Best Period

By Horsetooth R. from Fort Collins, Colorado
Music Background: Engineer

I own an LA-2A, a Distressor and a 2-1176. I noticed that alot of the guys that I respect had one or two of these in their racks so I sprang for one. After tracking a couple of songs, I want to go back and re-do my entire catalog. I won't take any more of your time telling you how impressed I am with the sound, the musicality, the ease of use, the quality build, etc.,. Use the time that you would have spent reading superlatives to make the extra few bucks that this costs and buy this one first. You'll save thousands.

Tube Tech - I would love to see a dual version.
