Jensen C8R 8-inch 25-watt Vintage Ceramic Guitar Amp Speaker - 8 ohm Reviews

25W, 8", 8-ohm Ceramic Guitar Speaker

Want your portable guitar amplifier to sound like a vintage-fueled champion? The Jensen C8R was built for just that purpose. Developed for small home and student amps, this ceramic guitar amplifier speaker delivers a deceptively huge sound that's tailor-made for the studio. And what a sound it is — crystal clear, shiny, and bright. What's more, this speaker's aggressive midrange bite pairs well with saturated fuzz tones. A number of guitarists here at Sweetwater have loaded a C8R into our favorite small-sized guitar amplifiers. You simply can't beat this outstanding 25-watt, 8-inch speaker from Jensen — it's a gem.

Great Speaker Replacement

By Doug M. from Texas
Music Background: Playing guitar for over 60 years

Bought this speaker to replace the factory speaker in my Fender Mustang LT25. Wow! What a difference it made. The sound is now open and crystal clear and has the presence it was missing with the factory speaker. I can now adjust the sound the way I want to instead of being frustrated with the constant muffled sound and little high end presence. It is a very good bargain at the price point. I would recommend it!

Very Transparent

By Sweetwater Customer

I took a little time with this C8R Jensen speaker. However my initial impression hasn't really changed.
As the title says I find this to be a very transparent speaker. I put this C8R in a ppc108 and paired it with an Orange Micro Dark to start.
I have been a fan of the Micro Dark but found myself let down with the amp.
See, depending on where I put the gain, I found myself confronted with an unpleasant rasp from the low end. However, there are various locations in the gain settings where the C8R really shines.
This is not at the fault of the speaker! When I swapped the amp to a Victory RD1 in low power mode I couldn't seem to replicate the unpleasant frequencies in the low end.
Further testing with a Tonex One pedal, cab sim off and going in the fx return of the Micro Dark I was presented with sounds comparable to a decent pair of headphones with cab sim on.
**If you are going in the Fx return with something like the Tonex One turn the volume down on the Tonex before you turn on the amp!**
Conclusion, the C8R is a great speaker with decent response all around! Jus be warned it might be a little too honest.

Great in my Orange PPC108

By Jarrod W. from Henderson, NV
Music Background: I mostly play guitar, but I play everything else too.

I picked up an Orange PPC108 (the small cabinet that is often paired with the Micro Dark head) because I wanted to set up a small rig on my desk next to my recording setup, for recording ideas and sometimes overdubs, that sort of thing. That cabinet is a great size for this use, but I was not initially blown away by the tones it was giving me. I considered modifying the cabinet to give it an open back, but then I came across a number of reviews for this Jensen speaker and I decided to give it a try.

I am glad I did--this little cabinet sounds SO much better now, even before the new speaker is broken in. The stock Orange speaker is very mids-heavy, with flat highs and dull, thudding lows. The Jensen however sounds very clear and a lot flatter in terms of frequency response. The bass in particular is pretty good for an 8" speaker, and I doubt there are any other options out there that would do much better.

If you don't love the tone of your PPC108, definitely give this speaker a try.

Amazing little speaker

By Sweetwater Customer

This speaker is incredible. I put it in an old Peavey rage 115 and was blown away. No other speaker I have sounds as nice as this 8" Jensen. I sometimes run other amps through it at low volume to get great tone at very low volume.

Jensen C8R

By Brandon M. from Iowa Park, TX
Music Background: Guitarist

This is a great speaker. I swapped into my old Orange 1x8 cabinet that sits under a 20w Micro Terror head. Wow. This made a good amp great. Along with switching the preamp tube to a Genalex Gold Lion, I have a perfect practice amp. I'm looking to add a second Orange 1x8 cabinet and putting a Jensen C8R in it to be more gig friendly. This speaker is loud and clear.

What a Difference!

By Geoff

I wanted a small practice amp so I bought an inexpensive 5W tube amp (Monoprice/Stage Right) a few months ago and I wanted to make a few upgrades to improve it's tone. I swapped the original Chinese 12ax7 pre-amp tube with a Russian made JJ 12ax7, but tonally I still wasn't satisfied. The amp came with a Celestion 70/80 speaker, but it lacked character. My Vox has a Celesion Greenback which I love, but the 70/80 just wasn't cutting it. I've never owned an amp with a Jensen speaker before and after some research, I decided to try the Jensen C8R. This little speaker has opened my eyes. The tonal difference is unbelievable. I also recommend getting high quality, low impedance instrument cables. I know they are expensive, but most people sabotage their tone with cheap cables, I was one of those people for years. The only downside with the speaker I received was cosmetic (photos attached), but that excess glue on the cone, does not seem to interfere with the tone. I look forward to exploring more Jensen speakers in the future.

Blackstar HT1 upgraded

By Dale B. from Farmers Branch, TX

The Blackstar HT1 is great but replacing the speaker with this is the best $50 anyone who owns one can spend. Opens up the sound takes away any muddiness and provides much more clarity. More clarity also at lower volume making the 1 watt amp more valuable to anyone with roommates or living in apartments.

Clean and crisp sound

By Rickey M. from NIANTIC, IL

I have a Peavey rage 258 15 watt amp that the Peavey speaker breaks up if I turn it up around 3/4. The sound wasn't that great. So I purchased this Jenson 25 watt speaker. It is like night and day. This vintage Jenson speaker brought life back to this little Peavey. Very good tone and plenty of clean sound. I would recommend the Jenson speaker. Thanks Sweetwater for another good purchase. Good Replacement for a Fender Rumble 15 speaker

By Joe B. from Mentor, OH

I was tasked with repairing a 2003 vintage Fender Rumble 15 bass amp. It turned out that the speaker had been abused by a young guitarist causing a rubbing bobbin and open voice coil. I selected the Jensen C8R because the price point was appropriate for the old disposable amp and it could handle the 15 watts of power (limited to low frequencies - with a guitar at higher frequencies, say above 3k the compression fails and amp can be driven into clipping - bad for speakers:-).

What I really liked from the Jensen speaker was the clarity. I compared the sound (at practice levels < 100 dB) of an old Guild B-402 and a single pickup Music Man Sterling Stingray bass. What I found fasinating was that I could clearly hear the difference in the sound signature of each bass, something that gets 'mushy' with larger/higher power amp speaker combinations. The Jensen was able to reflect the roundness and smoothness of the older Guild and the more sterile sound of the Stingray - something I did not expect.

While I do not expect the Jensen to hold up to the pounding and abuse that a similar Celistron or an Eminence should be able to handle, this speaker is surely worth serious consideration. Just don't make believe it's a Marshall stack!

Jensen Ceramic CR8

By Seth from Portland Oregon
Music Background: Singer songwriter virtually unknown

I was really depressed when I poked a hole in my 1974 fender Vibrochamp champ speaker. The amp has just been sitting in the corner collecting dust until I found this replacement at Sweetwater after reading many reviews I settled on the Ceramic CR8. My Champ has never sounded so sweet, looking forward to recording with it again. I guess it's true, everything really does happen for a reason.

Jensen 8 inch, 8 ohm and 25 watt replacement speaker

By Don S. from Banner Elk, NC
Music Background: Been playing 47 years.

Perfect fit in my Fender Champion 20 watt amp. This Italian speaker sounds noticeably better than the Chinese stock one. Only change to the amp I had to make was to remove the undersized negative clip on the speaker lead and replace it with a larger one.

Such a sweet sound for the money

By DaveH from America's Dairyland
Music Background: Brass player, COVID bass player, DIY amp builder

I'll admit it -- I bought this because it was cheap. It was either this or the Celestion Eight 15. It's not a replacement speaker for me, but rather part of a DIY amp I'm building. I wasn't prepared to plunk down a lot of cash on something I may accidentally blow up.

The sound is surprisingly nice. Straight out of the box, without even sticking it in a cabinet, just this speaker, a Les Paul, and a 10 to 20-ish watt amp powering it. It sounds so sweet, I'll be buying Jensen for my future amp projects as well.
