Sony C-800G Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone Reviews

Ultra-low-noise Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Mic with Built-in Cooling System and External Power Supply

The list of the best-sounding microphones ever made is a short one. Among the usual suspects — select, well-maintained vintage tube mics — are a handful of contemporary high-ticket items, including the Sony C-800G. If you've ever worked with this exceptional mic, you know what we mean. It captures the silky breathiness of vocals without a hint of shrillness. It's also a revelation on acoustic guitar. In fact, the C-800G's effectively non-existent noise floor and high sensitivity let you use it on almost anything with astonishing results. The vacuum tube — a hand-selected 6AU6 — has its own onboard cooling system. The large dual-diaphragm capsule features electronically selectable cardioid and omnidirectional polar patterns. If you have the budget for an ultra-high-end microphone, the Sony C-800G deserves your serious consideration.

Heaven

By Daryl L. from Street Symphonik Studios, Inc.
Music Background: Grammy-certified winning Pianist, producer, arranger

I first used this mic while a member of a vocal group, EnTyme, in college during the mid to late 90's. Never had I used a microphone that left such an impression on us. The clarity, the PRESENCE....the sonic truthfulness....That stayed with me for years.
Our group would sing in the style of legendary a cappella group, Take 6. This microphone gave us that sound.
While on the road for many jazz festivals, I later became friends with the guys from Take 6.....and found out that THIS WAS THE MICROPHONE THEY USED ON EVERY RECORDING!!!!

Fast forward to my touring years, and using my tour money to build my home studio. My wife, also a recording artist (and prior to me building my studio), recorded a lot on this mic. I saved up allll of my "pennies" and became the proud owner of this microphone July 2023.....and it has been the only mic she wants to use when recording her vocals.

I love the how it SITS with her voice.

Vocal chain recording her on uptempo music - Sony C800G-->Neve 1073DPX --> Warm Audio WA1B-->Apollo x8p (with SSL E Channel Strip on Unison Preamp)
Vocal chain recording her on ballads - Sony C800G -->Avalon 737sp --> Warm Audio WA-2A --> Apollo x8p.

Heaven. Absolute Heaven.

It is one of those feelings

By Anerson E. from Westubry, NY
Music Background: Rapper

You know how you wanted something your whole life. And all of the sudden you finally get it. Well this is exactly what this microphone means to me. I used it for the first time at Dream recording studio on Long Island back in 2016-17. And then I feel in love with it, wishing one day that I would be a proud owner of the best rap vocal microphones in the world. Well Sony definitely delivers with this mic. It was everything I've been looking for and more. The sound is grand, big and fat. You can use whatever pre-amp you like or EQ to taste. But at the end of the day I tested the mic naked, Straight in the Pro-Tools carbon interface. It was magical. I can't wait to start adding more colorful tools to create my ultimate sound. Thank you Nick from Sweetwater for making that call.

Stunning Vocal Mic

By Tyler B. from PDX
Music Background: Songwriter

I've used a LOT of high quality vocal mics. I own an original m49, a Blue Bottle, and a Blue-modified U47. The resolution on the C800G trumps them all!

I did have to send it in for repair about 9 months after purchasing it...thankfully was under warranty. I was surprised about it breaking so quickly. I finally got it back from repair...fingers crossed.

I use this with a Vacuvox V41 preamp.

Literally the only mic that delivers results without eq/compression

By Lapo from Bethesda, MD
Music Background: Producer/Engineer/Artist

It's not even fair. I barely have to touch the vocals. all you need is a good vocal booth and you're done. Ok maybe not I must mention you also need a great talent as always. Seriously I wish I would have bought two, now they are almost impossible to come by. Worth every PENNY!!! Sweetwater has some of the best customer service out there...

Well wishes to everyone inl your musical endeavors, and remember to get it done no matter the tools you have.

What they don't talk about

By Jay C. from Washington DC
Music Background: Producer

Great for stacking vocals and it even comes with a "oh s*** handle" for the sessions you are barely hanging on in...In comparing this microphone to a lamborghini... if you buy this car...expect the maintenance to be just as costly.

When the microphone is functional there are no words that can express the clarity and mojo this puts on records. What this mic does for adlibs, shouts, background vocals is beyond words. You can mimic a voice and it captures the performance without it sounding like crap.

You simply cannot go wrong investing in this microphone

By Robert L. from New York, NY
Music Background: Producer/Engineer/Mixer

This was the one missing piece from my studio. I'm fortunate to have the best outboard gear at my disposal. But the one thing I was missing was a 'premier' microphone. I've had a U87 for many years, and it will always be a valued prize in my mic collection. But, when it comes to vocals, the 87 is not a perfect fit for every voice. That Neumann eq presence peak that so many knock-off mics try and emulate can get in the way of some voices. I've used the Sony C800G for many years at other studios, and it had become my first choice when I needed pristine, high fidelity quality for my vocals. For those vocalists that had never used it before, they always came away impressed. And it helps that its distinctive look makes it hard to forget as well. So when a project came in that I wanted to do exclusively at my private studio, I knew I had to FINALLY get my own C800G. Why did I not try and track down a vintage U67 or 47? Excellent question. Of course, those mics are icons for a reason. To many, myself included, those two models are the pinnacle of gorgeous sound. But, at the same time, no two mics sound the same. In the past when I've rented classics such as Telefunken Elam 251's, AKG C 12's, U47's, etc, I always have the provider bring me two, because on any given day, one of those mics is going to sound markedly better than the other. This is because of how the mic has been cared for, and how the electronic components age over time. Generally a 50 year old capacitor will not be operating anywhere near its original tolerance spec'ed at the time of manufacture. Which is exactly why no two classic mic models sound the same. All this said, as most of us do not have technicians on site to repair equipment when it goes down (like all the classic studios did) I couldn't take the chance of investing in a vintage classic that would be put into regular service. That when it dies, I'd have to send away to a specialist who could take an unspecified amount of time to repair it. For a hefty sum...money that I would have already surely lost because I didn't have my 'premier' mic available. Which brings me back to the C800G. Still manufactured to this day, a modern classic, used on countless hits in your music collection, comes with a warranty. But the clincher is, every mic shootout I've done with it, it always wins. Yes, its expensive, but the performances it will inspire with your clients actually saves you time you'd previously spend on editing, tuning and eqing to make it sound like a hit song. And, if time is money, its a bargain.

Wowsers

By Rick G. from Atlanta
Music Background: Engineer, Producer

I was fortunate enough to use this microphone while recording a v/o for an internationally recognized superstar. Him and his 2 partner artists use these microphones in their personal studios. The chain was the Sony C going into a TT Cl1b comp, and then into an ssl aws900. Between the artists vocal control, and everything in the signal path, I have never in my life heard a more crisp, clear, and authentic sound in my entire life. To say that he sounded like he was in the room with you is an understatement.

This is one of the VERY few pieces of gear that would get a 6 / 5 rating.

sounding good

By Alex from Miami, FL
Music Background: Recording artist

I am a recording artist and I had never seen this mic before. I went to this studio one day and I was recording with it and was thinking how amazing it was sounding. Then another artist came in to see if they could use the mic, then another producer came in to ask if they could use it. I was like I didn't know this certain mic was in such high demand. I was thinking... maybe I'll try to buy one for myself... searched the internet, saw the price, **** my pants... simple enough.... incredible mic, worth the price but it's not a necessity for that price.
