S6X: a Modern Piano with a Vintage Soul
The Yamaha S6X 7' acoustic grand piano benefits from the latest advances in the evolution of piano craftsmanship. Yamaha artisans handcraft the S6X using state-of-the-art technologies and construction methods such as Acoustic Resonance Enhancement, strengthened back beams, proprietary keyboard action and hammer felts, European spruce soundboards, and hand-wound bass strings, and more. The sleek, modern design and graceful curves of the S6X are the physical manifestations of its elegant, expressive sound. Incorporating the best of the previous-generation S Series and enhanced with cutting-edge innovations, SX Series pianos take their place on the stage as contemporary instruments that incorporate everything Yamaha has learned in their century-plus experience in crafting fine pianos. At the Sweetwater Piano Showroom, our piano experts appreciate the unparalleled level of craftsmanship that goes into Yamaha acoustic grands such as the C6X. We are honored to present to you such a fine musical instrument.
Acoustic Resonance Enhancement
A proprietary treatment process used to season the rims used in SX Series pianos Yamaha’s state-of-the-art Acoustic Resonance Enhancement (A.R.E.) reduces the moisture content of the wood, inducing the chemical reactions that take place when young wood is aged under ideal conditions. This enables the rims to produce the sweet, warm tone of an instrument seasoned to perfection. Proven in Yamaha’s acclaimed flagship violin and A Series guitars, the benefits of A.R.E. technology now make possible an acoustic piano with a sound like no other. The first series to incorporate A.R.E., SX pianos deliver a deeply emotive sound with sustained resonance and the exactitude to express even the most exquisitely fragile pianissimo passages.

Rims: the key to warmth and clarity
For the inner and outer rims of SX Series pianos, Yamaha artisans carefully select wood based on its acoustic properties. They reduce the number of glue layers and use over 30% thicker wood layers than those of previous S Series pianos to bring out the resonances inherent in the wood. This novel approach shapes the sonic characteristics of SX Series pianos, adding clarity, richness, and muscle to the bass and midrange, while maintaining a warm and seductive overall tone.
Proprietary hammer felt expands tonal color range
One of the most important factors in acoustic grand piano design is that the hammers complement the piano body. For the SX Series, Yamaha developed a new proprietary hammer felt formula. To find the perfect match for these pianos, they tested numerous prototypes before arriving at one with superior elasticity that allows the pianist to produce beautifully clear tonal colors, along with well-balanced density across the full 88-note key range. As a player, you’ll savor the expressive nuance offered by the Yamaha S6X.

Strengthened back beams fortify the piano’s sound
The massive stresses brought to bear by a powerful fortissimo passage can cause a piano back frame to flex, dissipating energy. To handle these forces and efficiently convert them into rich, resonant reverberations, a piano requires a robust back frame. The back frame beams on SX Series pianos are about 20% thicker as compared with the previous-generation S Series. The additional support makes for a more rigid body and less undesirable vibration. The Yamaha S6X is designed to provide a solid foundation to support your musicality.
A soundboard that resonates your emotive intent
Just like a violin, the 3-dimensional concave "crown" of its spruce soundboard is critical to the crafting of any piano — and its ability to transmit string vibrations from the soundboard into the surrounding environment. In the S6X acoustic grand, Yamaha has leveraged their vast experience in crafting world-class pianos to create a soundboard assembly that vibrates effortlessly to powerfully project and resonate the minute nuances of your musical performance. Using techniques borrowed from the flagship CFX for attaching the soundboard, ribs, and bridge; the SX Series soundboard assembly delivers superior projection throughout any concert venue — or your living room. Made from specially selected strong European spruce, the SX Series soundboard is built to withstand stress and retain its shape. Throughout its playing life, it promises to deliver rich overtones, low decay, and a wide range of expressive tonal colors.

Bass strings hand-wound by Yamaha artisans
Winding piano by hand is an extremely painstaking job that can only be performed by experts. Wind pure copper around a core steel string, Yamaha artisans must constantly make minute adjustments in the tension and balance of the strings. Yamaha's hand-wound piano strings are pliable and they produce overtones in better harmonic synergy with fundamental frequencies. The result — to your ears — is a beautifully resonant sound with rich, satisfying overtones.
