AmpRX Brownie Tube Amplifier Input Voltage Controller Reviews

AC Voltage Controller for Tube Amplifiers with LCD Voltmeter, +5V/-7V Output Voltage Range, and 2A/4A Fuse Options

Available only at Sweetwater, the AmpRx Brownie is a cutting-edge voltage controller that optimizes your tube amplifier’s sound and longevity by always providing it with the proper power. As any of our tube amp devotees will tell you, the performance of a tube amplifier is heavily dependent on the power it receives. While 120 volts is the expected standard for any standard outlet in America, the reality is that a perfect 120 volts from your outlet is rarely the case — especially in older homes, studios, and venues. Luckily, AmpRx’s Brownie allows you to modify the wall voltage being sent to your amplifier both downward (up to 7 volts) and upwards (+3V and +5V settings), providing you with the power to achieve between 117 and 120 volts in almost any situation. Moreover, the Brownie boasts a high-visibility LCD so that you can monitor your current voltage and amperage in real time. Championed by recording professionals and engineers around the world, AmpRx’s Brownie is a must-have tool that's equally capable of extending the life of a classic vintage tube amp or tracking down the voltage sweet spot of a modern boutique creation.

So convenient there is no excuse now!

By Chris C. from Scottsdale, AZ

I have been using the original BrownBox which has the advantage of decreasing the voltage more and has two outlets on the back. It seems to me the original decreases volume more and adds a little compression than the Brownie when turning down the voltage (The Brownie seems to retain the same sound). However, the Brownie is definitely smaller and lighter and therefore more convenient for the gigging musician. I didn't think I would use the ability to increase the voltage, but actually played a venue where the wall was 114V. Wherever I play, I can now get to my desired 117V. Works like a charm and is an inexpensive way to protect your amp and tube life.

Keeper

I ended up purchasing the larger two inch rack unit of this. I needed more power capacity. But instead of returning this which would have been no issue with Sweetwater, I decided to keep it in the event I want to run a smaller practice amp with my pedalboard this will handle both with ease. These are so useful to run even a modern amp on as our wall voltage is usually very unstable and too hot on or gear. Highly recommended. I'm currently using the larger one here. Check it out. The small one operates exactly the same but I needed more outlets.

Greatness

By Robert P. from Independence WV

Really gives you consistent sound and feel. A lot of places I play in my area have 123 to 126 volts coming out of the wall, and it can make my amp brittle and stiff. If you want a consistent feel every night it's a great option

Brownie saved the Blackstar

By Chris
Music Background: Hobby beginner

I use the Brownie in front of a Blackstar HT 20R MKIII 20 watt tube amp. Figured that the cost of the Brownie would be worth it if the lifespan of the Blackstar can be extended.
I am only using this setup for home use. Just a beginner hobby guitarist.
The first time I plugged in the Brownie, it was showing 122 volts in bypass mode. But the voltage reading has been as high as 124 on subsequent usages. I usually set the Brownie at 120-119 for the Blackstar. It does seem like the amp sounds better than when it is plugged directly into wall socket.
I initially had a couple questions about the Brownie so contacted support at AmpRX. They responded quickly and answered all my questions.

Perfect for making sure the wall output is right where it needs to be...

By Michael from Santa Fe, NM

I got the Brownie because here in New Mexico the electricity can vary quite a bit day to day. Hence, this allows me to run my amps at the correct voltage so they sound the same every time I play. Well worth the money. And it is extremely simple to use. Highly recommended.
