Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker Fuzz Pedal Reviews

Classic Fuzz Distortion Pedal for Electric Guitar with Bypassable Tone Circuit and High-frequency Boost

The Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker takes the most famous fuzz pedal in the world and adds new tone-shaping capabilities. On top of the familiar controls, the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker boasts two switches: Tone and Wicker. The Wicker switch opens up three high-frequency filters, adding top-end bite. Very cool! The Tone switch disengages the Tone control from the circuit, resulting in a full-frontal Big Muff assault like none you've ever heard! For Muff fans, the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker is the ultimate fuzz!

Excellent Fuzz!

By Sweetwater Customer on February 7, 2024

This Big Muff kicks butt. The option to bypass the tone gets you that classic Big Muff sound. And the tone wicker adds high end definition when you want it. It's excellent, love it. It will be staying on my pedal board for years to come.

Alternative rock and j mascis tones

Really enjoying this pedal for that dinosaur jr. sound. I've had the big muff pi on my wish list for a while and when I saw this pedal I knew I had to get it. The wicker and tone switch give this pedal a lot of versatility. You can get classic big muff tones and use the switches to get even more fuzz. Perfect for playing dinosaur jr. riffs!

Awesome Tone!

By Sweetwater Customer on August 31, 2022

This is the best sounding pedal I have ever owned! Will be buying one for a friend of mine that loves it too. It is so crisp and clear you can hear each string ring out in a chord, not muddy like most pedals.

you want that classic muff? this will give you that sound. better yet, you get the chance to mold your sound with a flip of a switch or two, expanding the spectrum of fuzz tones. personally, i feel like the tone and wicker switches aren't too invasive, and that classic muff tone is there. where as with a deluxe model (which i also will enjoy for years to come) has a lot going on for the simple, classic circuit we all know and love. fuzz.

The Fuzz Pedal You've Been Looking For

By Matthew from Pendley on August 6, 2020 Music Background: 2+ years of self-taught guitar experience

After researching pedals for a couple weeks, I decided to give this one a try. The extra features on this pedal (tone switch and wicker) caused the price to be higher than the original Big Muff, but the range of sounds I am able to get makes the price definitely worth it. The pedal began working as soon as I had my lines plugged in, which is convenient considering I only have the one 9V power supply. Overall, I am super happy with this purchase and have been getting lost in my playing as I did when I first started playing guitar. I recommend this pedal to any guitarist looking for that classic fuzz sound, as the possibilities on this bad boy are plentiful in comparison to many other fuzz pedals among this price range.

The Original only Better

By Karl from Berkeley Springs, WV on March 2, 2018 Music Background: lifelong guitarist, performer, improvisor

Perfect option to the larger original, this one was a little more quiet than the original. Both are awesome
and get you that old school fuzz plus this one has a few more options to toy with. Excellent quality from the product and from the folks at Sweetwater. Never unhappy with their service. Why go anywhere else?

Awesome tone

By Sweetwater Customer from Needville, TX on December 10, 2017 Music Background: Professional/church musician

Had a prior experience years ago with the standard Big Muff Pi and was not impressed at all. Wanted a little more juice for my Fender amp and came across this model and decided to give it a try. Glad I did! It's definitely a keeper.

Classic Sounding Fuzz Distortion Pedal

This pedal adds more options to my ever growing pedal board when searching for a classic tone. I am glad I have this one in my arsenal.

If Fuzz Was My Cup of Tea.

By MB on April 9, 2017

I bought this pedal more or less to see how I liked using a fuzz pedal. As far as fuzz pedals go, I knew I had to try the BM but the version with tone wicker was more drawing as it offers more versatility with the addition of the tone and tone wicker switches. I'm not fan of fuzz in honesty, but I was still very impressed with this pedal. The clarity it offers even when cranked was crazy! I could hear every note and it sustained that as long as the note was held. It's very easy to use which is always a plus. the setting I seemed to favor was to have the volume at unity, the tone bypassed using the tone switch, sustain at two o'clock and tone wicker on. That was a wicked distorted and fuzzy sound. I would recommend this pedal to anyone looking for an excellent fuzz pedal. If fuzz was my cup of tea, I would never consider another pedal.

I had a BIGMUFF back in the 80s and a Russian made BIGMUFF in the late 90s, but this version is the best. The tone and wicker switches make this a versatile pedal.Put this behind your Wah pedal. It screams! It's all the fuzz I need.

My New Favorite Pedal. Buy It NOW!!!!

By Dustin Redington from Frankfort, IN. USA on November 4, 2014 Music Background: Black Metal, Noise Artist.

i really like all those old big muff pedals, like the violet ram's head, the green russian & every other ehx big muff pedal i have ever owned or heard but i might just love this pedal more, much more in fact. there are 5 or 6 totally different sets of tones you can get from this pedal ranging from light overdrive to blistering high gain distortion to brooding fuzz. i have around 20 different fuzz pedals but there is just something about electro-harmonix fuzz pedals that i love.

stop wasting your money on expensive boutique fuzz pedals.

Life Changing Discovery!

By Pure from Savannah, GA on June 12, 2014 Music Background: Semi Pro Musician

I've been playing more than 30 years and been using Boss overdrive/distortion which I love but never really got that deep blistering tone I was looking for. The Big Muff Pi changed my life. I now get that thick Chunk and long sweet sustain I've always looked for. I play a classic Fender Strat through a 50 watt (1977) Marshal JMP and 69 Fender Princeton in stereo.

BIG MUFF PI WITH TONE WICER FUZZ

THIS PEDAL DOES IT ALL, NO NEED FOR ANYTHING ELSE.

Great fuzz on synth basslines

By Lukasz from Dallas, TX on October 26, 2013 Music Background: Hobbyist composer, producer, pianist, and electronic musician

I purchased this pedal because I love Jimmi Hendrix's sound, but this pedal also has some additional features. I considered getting the bass version of this pedal since I only run synthesizers through this, but as it turns out that the regular version works fine on the bassy synth lines. It's just a matter of how one dials it in and what sort of signal one sends to it since one will probably mix the two sounds together anyway.

Quality Fuzz Pedal, Sounds of the 60's and 70's Think PINK FLOYD

By Gary S Watts from Southern Florida on September 11, 2013 Music Background: Musician, Guitar

Quality product that's well made , gives the classic rock sound that many are looking for, Pink Floyd, The Police and others. electro harmonix continues to make quality products. Only complaint was I had to order the 9v a/c adapter and they sent me the wrong one..Not sure if its worth packaging and returning a 10.00 item but the pedal was great..

AMAZING!!!!

By Ben Knitter from Cadott, WI USA on April 24, 2013 Music Background: Gigging Musician

I've owned this bad boy for almost 6 months now and it still wows me today. The TONE WICKER is amazing! you can go from a nice mellow distortion to a metal sound like nothing, great sounding its a must in any pedalboard!

Best Big Muff Currently in Production

By Rob D. on April 24, 2012 Music Background: Guitar Player/Producer/Muff Enthusiast

I spent months comparing Muffs before settling on the Tone Wicker version. I compared all of the EHX models in production now as well as a number of boutique "clones", and for the money, this is the best Muff you can buy, hands down.

With the tone "on" and the Wicker "off", you get the traditional Muff tone, but it is just that much sweeter than the standard muff or the Little Big Muff (those are also great, but this one just edges them out). Switching the Wicker "on" gives a very slight, but noticeable, treble boost which adds just a bit more clarity and bite, while still remaining smooth. If you really want variety, you can set the Tone switch to "off" and bypass the tone circuit altogether. This also yields a significant volume boost.

All in all, if you want the best value in a Muff, stop here and get this one. This has quickly earned a permanent place on my board.

AMAZING! A MUST HAVE!

By Eric Sowers from Reading, PA USA on November 4, 2011 Music Background: Guitarist and Keyboardist

This is an AMAZING distortion pedal! It gives a great distortion tone. The tone and wicker switch are also really neat and work well with finding a good tone! The pedal is built very sturdily, too. It's very good quality for a price that low! I highly recommend this pedal as you can get so many great distortion tones out of this pedal!

Great distortion!

By Jansen M. from Baton Rouge, LA USA on October 1, 2009 Music Background: Amateur Musician

This may be the only distortion pedal I will ever need. It gives a wide range of tones. It is the further evolved Big Muff. With the tone switch on I get the classic tone. Turn the tone switch off and I have a destructive blast that will break walls. Wicker adds more high-end and gives the fuzz a more razor blade edge. A great pedal for any rocker looking to add a little bit of noise to their sound.

Extra Tricks on a lovable Pedal Standard

By Jonathan Dunnette from Saint Paul, MN on June 11, 2018

Enough time has passed to be able to get over that preliminary "this is the best thing invented" stage of ownership, so now is the time to review.

The Big Muff needs no introduction. If you don't know what a Muff sounds like...um...where have you been?

What this one adds is the ability to bypass the tone stack...while hanging onto your shorts. This is a great feature particularly if you use the Muff for those big solos bathed in delay (that's my favorite use). Then, you have the wicker switch. If the wicker is on, you get a little raspier and higher definition thing. Personally, I don't use it much, but it is nice if you stack your Muff with another pedal for that smooth violin thing while keeping the high end.

The only reason for the 4.5 stars is simply that noise can be an issue. I wish EHX would try to address it in upgrades...but maybe that is just part and parcel with having a Muff.

Great Fuzz

By Jeff from Pocatello, ID on December 11, 2012 Music Background: musician

Great array of different tones that can be had. I highly recommned this pedal to anyone looking for a versatile fuzz pedal.

You can't go wrong with this pedal, it sounds so nice!

By John Fox from Gainesville, FL USA on July 22, 2011 Music Background: Musician: Guitar Bass and Keys

I own the standard Big Muff Pi without Tone Wicker, as well as the Big Muff Pi with Tone Wicker. I can honestly say that the Big Muff Pi with tone wicker is one of the most versatile Fuzz/Distortion pedals that I have ever used in my entire life. I love the pedal so much because I can get so many different types of tones. The Wicker switch allows me to get rich and crisp harmonics. The wicker switch used in conjunction with the Tone Bypass switch is also creates an incredible sound. It doesn't take up as much space on my pedal board as the regular sized Big Muff. If this pedal were stolen, I would honestly plan on purchasing another one as soon as possible. When the Tone Switch is on and the tone wicker is off, it sounds just like a Big Muff Pi. When you throw the wicker switch on, the difference really stands out in a positive way. When the wicker switch is off and the tone switch is off, the tone circuit is bypassed and allows you to tap into a whole world of tones that was previously inaccessible until now. Buy this pedal, you will not regret it. Thank you SweetWater for yet another unforgettable pedal purchase!

Definitely the Muff For me (lol)

By Josh Pene from Chatsworth, CA on February 16, 2024

Was gifted an 81' EHX little big muff but it's AC, so I wanted to buy a modern version and do some experiments.

Does the sound I wanted from Russian muffs for when I'm running guitar through it, but then let's me toggle and run it a bit more clearly defined for bass peer Ty much only having to tweak my volume between the two settings

A different flavor

By Harold from Robertsdale, Al. on September 18, 2017 Music Background: Touring guitarist, recording engineer.

I mainly do studio recording these days, so I was looking for a different distortion tone to have on tap. I have the OCD, Tube screamer, DS-1 etc, so I ordered this pedal and this is what I found. At first I used it like all my other pedals and put straight into my Blackstar amp. It sounded completely unusable no matter how I adjusted it! This was into the distortion channel. I played around and got nothing but noise and a smeared sound. Then, I flipped to the clean channel and Wow!! What a great tone! Night and day difference. I love heavy rock tones, but I couldn't get that sound through the the dirty channel, only the clean side. Seems to be built well, took my PS-1 power supply well. And into a DD-3 delay it's huge! Hope this helps!

Best sounding Big Muff Pi on the market

By Erich from Cleveland, OH on October 2, 2014 Music Background: etc.

Everyone has heard what the pedal can do so I ain't going to say anything that would help with that. I have owned 4 various BMP pedals over the years. I parted ways with each of them for one reason or another, but I always liked the pedal... I was just never sold on many previous models I had. This model has a sweeter, more focused sound than the re-issues and the Sovkets. The added feature of the tone and treble boost is nice. I don't use the treble boost, too harsh for me. I do like the tone cuttin switch. I like using the tone cut for rhythm parts and with the tone on for a solo... you might like it the other way around. Point being it offers some options the other BMP pedals didn't. I also like the more compact size. some of the other BMP pedals aren't pedal board friendly. I think this is a great sounding solution to all your fuzz needs.

Is this Fuzz?

By Adam Ertsey from APO, AE on November 22, 2018

Glad so many people love this but it did not work for me. Fuzz for me means rouchy and this sounds too much like overdrive for me. Wicker and the Tone knobs make the sound worse.
