Suhr Bella 44-watt Tube Amplifier Head - Black Reviews

44/22W, 1-channel Tube Amplifier Head with Boost, Bright Switch, Half Power Switch, and Tube-driven Effects Loop - Black

Suhr’s Bella range of amplifiers is designed to deliver the ultimate pedalboard platform experience, touting a rich American-style tonal foundation that seamlessly melds with any effect you can throw at it. This single-channel 44-watt tube amplifier dons a pair of 6L6 power tubes and a trio of 12AX7 preamp tubes. This time-tested tube complement, coupled with Suhr’s masterful amplifier engineering, results in a tone that’s clearly inspired by America’s golden age of amplification, only with a firmer bass and richer, fuller-sounding cleans. A straightforward control section consisting of a 2-band EQ and a Presence knob offers an impressive degree of tone-sculpting power, and you also get a +6dB Boost switch and treble-sharpening Bright switch. As a boutique-grade pedal platform amp, it’s only natural that the Bella’s built-in effects loop delivers a supremely clear and transparent operation — you can even use the loop’s dedicated Send/Return Level knobs to handle line-level rack gear, in addition to standard stompboxes. It’s all topped off with a half-power 22-watt mode, taming the Bella’s stout projection and allowing you to record or practice at home without rattling the windows.

The GOAT!

By Sweetwater Customer

The Bella is not for metal heads!
I have been searching for that mystical 60's surf/Wrecking Crew/Ventures vibe out of various amps and couldn't get it.

But now I got it!

This is harmonically expressive and airy and complex.

And the effects loop is amazing!

I thought all effects loops were all the same,....boy was I wrong!

Definitely my Holy Grail!

second try

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: decades on stage

I can't make friends with the Bella. It's my second try. I've played Marshall, Fender, Mesa, Friedman, Tone King, Fuchs, Orange, and nearly every Z ever made, all on stage in gig situations. The Bella is solid state rectified, but it has a softness, a slight amount of sag and compression. It's too soft, a slow response to pick attack. The amp needs a bit more snap and punch. It's overly sweetened.

Strange thing is, with all this sweetness, you'd think an overdrive would sound great, creamy, warm, and they do, but there is somehow a slight sterile quality to the overdrive that doesn't happen with my Z amps. The overdrive somehow sounds more solid state, not what I expected, not becoming part of the amp. These are Timmy and Barber OD's, two very different circuits, but similar results in the Bella.

The amp is very scooped in the mids, and some people say it's loosely based on a Fender Bandmaster, so no midrange control. Given the deep mid scoop on the Bella, I found myself wanting to bring the tone out of the amp, more forward. The presence control doesn't fix this, it's the mids that need an adjustment. It's an enormous head, quite wide, very heavy.
