Behringer Wasp Desktop Analog Synthesizer Reviews

Eurorack-sized Digital/Analog Hybrid Monosynth Module with 2 Digital Oscillators, Lowpass/Highpass/Bandpass/Notch Analog Filter, LFO, Poly Chain Compatibility, MIDI In/Thru, and USB-MIDI

A faithful reproduction of the cult classic digital-analog hybrid synth, the Behringer Wasp Deluxe monophonic synth has the bone-rattling lows and searing highs that made its predecessor infamous in esoteric synth circles. True to its name, the Wasp Deluxe excels at droney, buzzy synth sounds, emanating from its two digital oscillators, distinctive analog VCF, noise generator, and a hive full of modulation capabilities. The Wasp Deluxe can generate three variable oscillator shapes —pulse, ramp, and enhanced mode, with pulse width modulation on oscillator one. Oscillator two swaps out pulse width control for pitch, so you can dial up warbly, detuned chorus effects, or tune the oscillator to intervals for pseudo-polyphony. A unique LFO with six selectable waveforms, pitch and frequency mod controls, and the Wasp Deluxe's two analog envelope generators open up vast signal manipulation possibilities. Synthesists at Sweetwater are psyched to add this rarified legend to their synth arsenals. Gnarly, aggressive, and completely idiosyncratic, Behringer's Wasp Deluxe is all the buzz!

BZzzz

By Rob from Los Angeles
Music Background: Synthpunk, Electropunk, industrial, dance,

Affordable, scrappy, and just a blast to use. There's really nothing not to like about this beautiful piece of kit. I'm currently using it with my Electribe Sampler 2 and both are playing nice together with a simple midi connection.

Great Support Team

By Sal S. from TITUSVILLE, FL

The Behringer Wasp Deluxe Synthesizer I ordered was shipped quickly, and received well packaged. It had a problem with a frozen mult-position knob. Sweetwater's support made sure that my problem was resolved quickly and sent a replacement without shipping charges or delays. Sweetwater made sure I was satisfied with my purchase.

Fun little synth!

By Johnny F. from Santa Fe, NM
Music Background: Long time bassist, new to music production

New to synthesizers, and this one was my first. Wanted something relatively simple, and cheap so I could dip my toe in. Glad I chose this one! Unit feels solid, knobs feel nice. Most importantly it's just fun to mess around with. The sounds are unique, and aggressive! Get it!

High Horsepower Sleeper -- with a sweet side.

By Michael S. from Behind this seemingly innocent looking bookstore...
Music Background: Goth, industrial, Acid Jazz, and Trip-hop, Cinematics, and Punk.

First things first, this synth has a powerful and rich sound. More importantly, it has well in its pallet beautiful and melodic sounds; far more than you might expect from any of the sound demos that are out there. Far more.

Probably because of my industrial background, I love analogue monosynths. No two are exactly alike, let alone two platforms / models. An MS-20 is not an Odyssey in its timbre. Originally I thought I'd pass on this. Then I started on a project where I needed an Acid House TB-303 sound. Yes, I'm aware of the obvious solution. I wanted more flexibility. I know the WASP has a circuit which prevents self oscillation. But the idea felt right.

It worked. Better than I could have hoped. With it's filter it was quick to find that sound I needed.

Now I could explore it. Oh --- my --- gosh. It has so much to offer. Lets start with some basics. Brass. BIG BRASS. Anime "some main character is about to die" level horns. Harmonically rich cinematic sounding horns. It's beautiful. Synth sounds, strings, reeds, its all there, with a specific character.

Now, the elephant in the room. The Filter -- to its credit -- is made of pure filth and hatred. It is aggressive, and colors the sound quickly. But with a little care is tamed, opening up the melodic sounds this synth is capable of. Honestly, Behringer did a great job on this one. It sounds great and its always fun!

-- TL/DR verson --

Solidly built! High quality. Rich harmonic sounds. Doomsday filter. This one is a keeper! Buy it now!

Fun, unique synth with quirks

By Colin N. from Spring Lake, MI
Music Background: Award-winning composer, multi-instrumentalist

A very fun, fairly unique sounding synth. It takes a little getting used to how some of the controls interact and influence each other, but it's a great flavor to have. I wouldn't recommend it for your only synth but it's an excellent addition to an already existing collection. I particularly like using it for drones and for sort of crazy sounding leads or overdubs.

Best clone so far?

By Matthew J. from South Bend, Indiana

This is exactly like the sound-creating abilities of the original. Doubt me? I was toying around with this gem hitting exactly the same sounds I heard when it was used by Throbbing Gristle as well as many other great groups and artists, the list being so endless space doesn't permit listing them all! Nobody's missing anything without the original keyboard design which was terrible for the time and wouldn't float today.

I doubt that the original was constructed this well, in fact, manufacturing processes having come a long way since the late 1970s, early 1980s. What's so exciting about the WASP is that you can warp sounds almost infinitely. Its oscillators are digital while the rest is analog, a bit of an early hybrid in that respect. PPG might have been first using analog filtering and amplitude, envelopes; the introduction of the WASP made it affordable for most musicians.

It was time to finally buy it!

By Floyd O. from GREENVILLE, SC
Music Background: Drummer, former recording engineer and Studio owner for over 20 years. Synthesizer owner and Programmer since 1972.

When I started building my new Home Music Production Studio Room in 2021 I immediately purchased Behringer's ARP 2600 Blue Marvin and Model D because I had owned the originals and wanted to relive some of that Synthesizer history. I also included the Pro -1 & Neutron because they were both selling for a limited time at a significantly reduced price and are great Synths in their own right. I soon added the K-2 because I had never owned the original Korg (at the time I felt I didn't need one as I loved my MiniMoog) and now wanted that The MS-20 thick robust sound, which was uniquely raw and wonderfully distorted.

I considered both the CAT and WASP but honestly felt they weren't Clones worth the price they were selling for.
Now that Behringer has officially reduced the prices on them it was time to take another look and I bought both of them.

I always loved The Wasp's filter design and how it abused the digital inverters as if they were analog op-amps, which made for a unique distortion, "70's ish grunge" and other "nasty" artifacts that define the specific sound of its filter's Multi-mode Lo, Hi, Band and Notch modes. The biggest reason to own one. The ability to use the External Input on this Wasp Deluxe to process thru its Filter makes this Synthesizer even more useful.
So at this price it's a must have addition to any Synthesizer Setup. Just the filter alone is worth the price. In fact the Doepfer A-124 VCF5 Wasp Eurorack Filter Module costs almost as much.
So now I have completed my "Sextet" of Behringer Semi-Modular Synths with this "Stinging" Synth! Get one, you can't afford not to!!

Timinator's review

By Timothy P. from Amarillo, Texas
Music Background: Classical, jazz, rock, vocal accompaniment, church liturgy.

My Wasp was delivered about 2 weeks and it's an amazing instrument. I am more familiar with digital synths, so pure analog is something completely new to me. It's challenged my thinking about the fundamentals of sound and how they can be shaped and mutated infinitely. I was telling a guitarist friend about it how I sustained a note, turned the volume all the way down, came back 10 minutes later, turned the volume up and it was still sustaining the note. I discovered a little trick. It has both high and low sound outputs. I have each output going through a separate channel on my amp and now I get two octaves. Very fat sound. I've layered it with the monophonic synth patches on Roland tone generator for some amazing sounds.

Awesome synth - so many sounds!

By Scott D. from Southeastern PA
Music Background: I go way back, 60's 70's, 80's music

I've been experimenting with many sounds with my Poly-D and now the Wasp. When I first started dialing in the knobs on the Wasp, it literally sounded like the buzzing of wasps, lol And then as you tune and sync the waveforms, you get amazing resonant blends. I've managed to layer the sounds and come up with some great combinations. After a few weeks of playing, this is now a big part of my music arsenal! See video for my walkthrough / rough demo.

Fun quirkiness

By William from Towson

The Wasp is quickly becoming my favorite synth The sound is rich and sometimes surprisingly quirky but absolutely always a great instrument. Plays in that old 70-80's Style so adeptly I spend hours just experimenting and exploring it's depths You want a synth to experiment with, then this little powerhouse is the one for fat impressions The price is fantastic especially since an original Wasp is extremely rare to locate and outrageously expensive when you do find one….this little guy packs a powerful sting!!!

WASP has Sting!

By Jesse P. from Socorro, NM
Music Background: EDM Demigod

This synth is quite impressive. No wonder 808 State and Duran Duran used it. It has a very 70's synth growl to it. The Behringer repro is pretty faithful. I have not A/B'd the real deal. But I've played a real WASP D and an SH-101 and a friends studio back in the early 2000's. And this thing is just as fat. According to my memory of the original sound. There's extras available on the repro too not available on the original. Like MIDI/USB, and Eurorack integration.

The Sound! Even without effects there are sweet spots where you swear there is some chorus hidden inside. Nope. Just the oscillators singing with the EG settings. The filter choices all sound Amazing. Not sure if the original had four filter choices or not. But this one does. It can sound angry or ethereal. And you will have to tell yourself to stop and record. Because patch design comes so easy on synths like these. No patch storage. Just you and the sound.

I hooked it up to my Keystep 37 which is perfect for analog synths like this one. I had several sequences going in no time. It is a true reproduction even with the oscillator tracking. You only get like three keytracked octaves. But with 32,24,16,8,4,2 oct settings. Don't worry about it. You usually don't 88 scale a monosynth anyways. Here is your bass/lead/rhythm/ synth. Throw some effects on it and get some sick results!

Buy it on sale. Thank the Muse later.

A Unique Synth in your arsenal.

By Brian H. from Pemberville, OH
Music Background: Man-Cave Musician for many years. :o)

$ for this beauty….I too got stung and needed to buy one after watching all the YouTube videos.
It can sound big and nasty, big and bouncy, or a little bit of both. Has a unique sound that's very different than my other synths, and that's reason enough to own one. Throw some Behringer rack ears on it and place in the rack to save desk space. Just make sure it's close by as you will want to play with the WASP. It's fun. It creative. It's experimental. You can spend many hours fiddling and finding unique creations…just be sure to download the knob templates somewhere, so you can remember your settings. Makes me want one of the other Behringer synths. :o)

It buzzzzzzzzzes!

By DAC C. from Champaign, IL
Music Background: Composer, audio engineer

I remember the original Wasp by EDP! It had this nasty, buzzy tone to it and an internal speaker, plastic membrane keyboard, and the serious possibility that one you randomly picked up was in its premature death throes. BUT...and this is the fun part...it gained a big following, especially in the synthpop scenes at the end of the 1970s and into the early 80s. Some artists liked it even better when they miked up the kazoo-ish speaker. And why? Because if you needed a lead voice that would cut through all of your OTHER synths, this was almost-tailor-made for that exact purpose.

But like I noted above, the original Wasp wasn't exactly the most reliable thing. The plastic case was prone to damage. Many components would inexplicably fail, notably the membrane keyboard...but in its case, you could easily and obviously wreck it. And on and on...anyway, EDP eventually got around to coming out with the Wasp Deluxe. Didn't help 'em. EDP was done after only a few years.

So what this is is a replication of the Wasp Deluxe...a very hard (OK, nearly impossible) to find instrument. This adds proper MIDI implementations via USB and IN/THRU 5-pins, tosses the crummy ABS plastic case in favor of metal, and eliminates the keyboard. The board fab appears to be much improved, and in truth, this is a pretty rugged little box. The controls DO feel a tad odd; something doesn't quite feel "proper" (sort of hard to explain) with the pots, although the switches seem to be good; this is where that 1/2-star went.

But does it buzz? Oh, yeah, it buzzes...and squeals, yowls, and gets right up in your face. So it nails the lead sounds. But the surprise here is that, with the addition of that second VCDO (yeah...this thing has DIGITAL oscillators, albeit all done with TTL logic, hence the buzzzzzz), it's become a bass WEAPON. Just a touch of detuning, and look out! And the analog end is pretty good, too, starting with a pretty aggressive VCF and the Wasp tendency to overload the VCA. Oh...and given that this has an audio input with a level pot and a headphone out, I suggest you try that old feedback path trick with them. It's quite fun. And it likes distortion and fuzz A LOT, octave pedals, very "slammy" comp/limiters...just mess it up for maximum blast.

I could get more technical over this synth...but why? After all, the user manual for the original Wasp was a comic book! Just know this: it can cut through other things in your mixes like a straight razor on one track, and it can crack your foundation from subbass on another. If you want to push a lead REALLY out there, or cause sub-related structural damage, it IS your synth.

Good Support from Behringer

By Greg B. from Denver, CO

I have one of the early units that use SN S19* and this is to update my earlier review. I contacted Behringer support on Music Tribe and they cover the filter envelop double trigger issue under warranty. I costed me a bit to ship it to CA but they repaired it very quickly and I just got it back. They replaced the R172 resistor with a proper 4K Ohm and removed diode D11. It works great now and I can give a proper review. If you have the Model D or Cat you wont find this to be redundant. It is somewhat simplified in keeping with the original. There is no pitch bend or mod wheel assignments and the keyboard range is fairly limited. However, there are little features that sort of make up for it. So I wouldn't describe it as limited but more as an eccentric design with a personality of its own. The control oscillator (LFO) is very full featured and the filter has four different implementations and although the envelops are a bit to get used to there are things you can do with them that are not available in your average synth. So while you cant get every sound out of this you can most certainly get the Wasp sound and that sound is raspy, buzzy, deep and foreboding. You really have to hear it up close and personal. I love this thing.

At first I didn't like it, but it really started growing on me.

By Randall W. from Tulsa, OK

At first I did not like the sound, features, or the build quality in relation to something like the model d.

But as I gave it more, and more time, I kind of made a sweet spot for it.

First of all; The knobs and switches aren't as nice as the model d or neutron. The patching is extremely limited, and there is no modulation control from keyboard. Also it doesn't go to high in the octave range. This is a very old school reproduction to the T.

It sounds just like the name. It buzzes. It doesn't give that womp sound like a 3 OSC mini moog. I know the original was trying to compete with the likes of the mini moog, but it ended up with its own unique sound. The buzzing can go deep, and go pretty high as well.

How the filter functions makes it very novel. After a bit I made some pretty nice basses, and leads that were comparable to things being played in the top 100. Took me by surprise too. I felt that my software sampler can make sounds of what came out of it, or my software based wavtable synth could definitely do it. I can't get the same sound out of the model d, and definitely not out of the neutron (although this is subjective).

All in all, for the the price, you can't go wrong. Its a steal. Its more than likely not going to be your go to, like the model d. But I can see this being someone's secret weapon to be honest. The limitations allows for more creativity.

The only gripe I have is the lack of modulation controls via midi, and patching capabilities. Otherwise its solid for the paper.

Good tone marred by manufacturing issue

By Nick from Baltimore, MD

The Behringer Wasp Deluxe had a great tone in the brief time that I had it. Unfortunately, I received a unit that was in the S19 range of serial numbers, and apparently units whose serial numbers begin with S19 have a double trigger bug. Tech support tested out another unit and sent it to me; apparently they weren't able to reproduce the double trigger issue, but I did within minutes of powering on the replacement unit (after giving it several hours to warm to room temperature).

It's too bad that it didn't work out. Apparently Behringer has corrected the issue in later manufacturing runs. It's a shame that both the units I received had the double trigger bug. Alas.

Buzzz buzzzzz

By Elmer L. from Submarine Space Station
Music Background: Lo-fi Sci-fi

Good synth for a great price.
Let's face it, for less than $... it's not going to sound like a Moog, but add it to your rig & just let it buzz and do it's thing & you might be surprised by it's versatility. The oscillators can sound a bit thin, so I run mine through an analog delay & reverb pedal to fatten & mellow it out a bit & sometimes add the Acidbox III for interesting effects.
If you're new to analog synths or just want to add a new inexpensive piece to your rig, check out the Wasp.

Great sound. Hardware bug.

By Greg B. from Denver

The Wasp that I received starts with serial S1911. Unfortunately, this first series have a known hardware issue where the filter envelop intermittently triggers again upon release of the key. As I understand, Behringer covers the defect under warranty but it's a bit of a pain as I believe you have to ship it off to get a small hardware component replaced. I also hear that the manufacturing defect has been fixed for the newer batches. Given that I do love the sound. It can get nice a gritty. Overall, it a great synth and different enough from the D and Cat that it doesn't feel redundant.

Limits Are Good

By Steven M. from Nahunta, GA
Music Background: DC punk rocker and dance music producer.

Not the fanciest synth but it's limits are it's strength. I bought this on a whim as the price was too good to pass up. This synth sounds great and is easy to use in a live setting. The filters are really useful and fun. Got some wonderful sounds out of it doing arpeggiated chords and playing with the filters. Like DEVO said Freedom from choice is what you want. Another knockout Behringer product.

There's a very strong and compelling reason why this synth is getting a lot of buzz!

By Pete M. from seattle, WA
Music Background: producer | Mixer | Remixer

I've only had this synth for 5 days and I'm blown away by how big this sounds out my speakers. The tones you can produce with this thing is nothing short of amazing. I'm having way too much fun with this right now...

buggy product

By Ryan

The overall tone of the oscillators and filter get pretty close to the original Wasp. However, the filter envelope double triggers whenever release time is set to anything other than a long drone sound. Perhaps a firmware update is in the works, but if this company had any actual passion for synthesizers, they would have caught this very obvious bug. I returned mine as it is completely unusable to me and I have no interest in paying to be a beta tester.
