So Nice I Bought it Twice

By Tzva A.

I have 2 of these in a stacked configuration and they sound so good it gives me chills. I also bought 2 used Eventide Core's which I maxed out with my H9 Max. Now they sound as good as a Sequential Prophet Rev2. Thanks to Behringer I even had money left over for food.

Wow, is an Understatement

By Miro from California
Music Background: Professional gigging musician

Like most everyone who reads this, I went down the rabbit hole listening to demos reading reviews, etc., on this synth. When I finally decided this was for me, I ordered one from Sweetwater. You know all the details, I don't need to tell you the specs, they are available for you in the product description. What I can tell you is that this is a really great synth. And not a "great synth for the price", just a great synth period. Stock sounds are meh, but learn how it works, and start programming and you will be amazed at how good this sounds. Paired with a good multi effects pedal (like the ZOOM MS-700CDR+) and you are off to the races. Phat, juicy, creamy, lush, pick your favorite adjective, it's all there. If you are looking for a sequential sound, even something nearing a CS-80 in richness, this will be your friend. If you are looking for harsh, modern cutting edge synth sounds, this probably is not going to make you happy.

Punches Above Its Weight

By Steve

When I first got this synth, I set both oscillators to sawtooth, detuned one a tiny bit, set the cutoff at about 50%, turned the amp attack and release up a tad, and started playing pad type stuff. Even without effects, I was blown away by the beautiful, warm sound that came from my speaker. Soon I was dialing in some wonderful leads and basses as well. The filter is gorgeous, and with some resonance I was evoking some Rush-style sweepy prog rock tones. Sound design is fun and intuitive (provided you have some experience with synths) and even the menus aren't difficult to figure out without looking in the manual.

I took off a star because I feel one could hope for snappier envelopes. With the attack all the way down, the synth responds more like other synths do with the attack nudged up just a hair. It's not enough to spoil a groove, but it's noticeable as a player. I've heard that the envelopes were the Achilles' heel in the original, and the "Gigli mod" to correct that comes standard in the Behringer. These envelopes (amp and filter) are entirely usable and even quite flexible, but they do remain a minor weak spot.

I have not explored the presets or sequencer.

Great instrument. Great Price point and Great Costumer Service!

By BRUNO R.
Music Background: Tango Motel

I had a weird first impression of the instrument as when i plugged it in and tried playing it was as if all keys were pressed at once, really terrible sounds. But after updating the software it worked beautifully.

The packaging was also really well done and the candy is always a treat!

I really love the sounds I get out of the presets on this and the filters are great as well. Glad i finally got it.

Unfortunately they had run out of rack ears.

But i'm happy with my purchase!

The gear that I've been waiting for!

By Sweetwater Customer

Totally impressed with the ease of use and the simple layout. It reminds me of the Sequential Circuits Pro One that I use to have. It has a smaller footprint than I thought it would which makes it easier to find space for. The thing I really like about it is having the ability to turn knobs to create different sonic landscapes as opposed to clicking and dragging a mouse. Sure there are probably things that they could improve on but at this price point, I'm VERY satisfied.

FANTASTIC SYNTH AT ANY PRICE

By james b. from Austin, TX

I could have bought one of these long ago, wish I had. It takes up so little room yet delivers sound very much like a Deepmind12 or UBXA but in mono with no FX. That can be fixed easily. If you watch the video with 2 of these you'll see you can get a massive stereo synth with 16 voices for less than many single unit synths. It interfaces well with a certain online editor very well. Do yourself a favor and get one of these, then check out the more pricey synths. Sure you're gonna want the other synths too!! But this is a great foot in the door for analog synthesis and/or addition to your arsenal. Get one(OR TWO!) for not a lot of money and make sure you have at least a reverb device for it. HAVE FUN!!!!

Just another GREAT Behringer Synth

By Floyd O. from GREENVILLE, SC
Music Background: Drummer, Retired Recording Engineer from 1972 until 1988. Synthesizer owner and programmer since 1972.

I have been fine tuning (Pun Intended) my Synthesizer Music Workstation setup now that it has grown (more than 35 and counting) since I started putting it together in December of 2021. At first I was just trying some Synths to see where I might take this Journey. Now it has become time sell some Synthesizers that I find I just don't use enough or care for their overall sound experience and add some new ones that now I know I will find more useful and fun to play creatively.

This Pro 800 is EXACTLY one of those Synths. I sold my Pro-1 which honestly I never cared for (I prefer my Model D, Poly D, Wasp, CAT way more) to make room for this Pro 800 and I am SO GLAD I DID! It is everything that the Pro-1 could do and soooo much more. The 8 Voices are wonderful, and it includes all of the Original Prophet 600 Factory Presets (most people don't know this but they are what were in that original Synth).

Also the ability to purchase Third Party Preset Patches makes this Synthesizer extraordinarily more musically powerful. I filled Banks B,C & D with 300 additional Preset Patches (for under 25.00) that give me endless creative possibilities.

The build quality is solid. The Membrane buttons are tactile and easy to use. All of the knobs and switches are solid and well layed out very logically.
It's just a pleasure to play and alter the sounds to my needs.

If you have any doubts about this Pro 800.... Don't, just get one, you will not be disappointed.

Killer Analog Polysynth

By Sweetwater Customer

Although this is supposed to be a clone of the Sequential Prophet 600, you can still come fairly close to the Prophet 5 with this little synth, which is ultimately why I picked one up. Based on the other reviews that I've read in the past, I would definitely recommend updating this to the latest firmware to avoid any issues others may have mentioned. On my part at least, I haven't noticed any major issues. Though as some have noted, the knobs do feel cheaper than they look. I wouldn't be able to speak to their longevity, but for me it's not a deal breaker at this price point. I would add, since this is an analog synth, it's best to wait until the unit has warmed up some to ensure the oscillators are stable. Only then, if you are convinced that something still sounds off should you reach for the auto-tune button. There are some nice additions here compared to the original, such as up to 8 voices of polyphony, 3 additional banks to store user presets, an expanded set of LFO waveforms, among others. Although there are no onboard effects, if you pair this with something like a Zoom MS-70CDR pedal you can certainly create even lusher pads, and some great polyrhythmic pluck sounds. If you are looking for a low cost polyphonic analog synth with a Prophet 5 vibe that punches above its weight this is highly recommended. Otherwise, if money is not an issue you can always pick up a re-issue Prophet 5.

One of my favorite sub-$ analog synths

By Joe J. from Boston, MA
Music Background: Just another bedroom producer

This is a great sounding 8-voice polyphonic analog synth for those looking for the vintage Prophet sound. The controls are easy to master, creating and saving patches is straight forward. The LP filter is like butter. The knobs are sturdy and plenty big enough for my hands. It fits in a 19" without issues. Despite the price, this unit is a tank. I would not feel shy about gigging with it (you will want some outboard effects). If my unit broke, I would likely buy another.

Great little synth

By Matt from Pittsburgh
Music Background: Musician, engineer

I got the Pro 800 because I was putting together a live electronic music rig. I have a ton of poly synth vst's that I use to write with, but this little guy has immediately taken half of those plugins places in the writing process now. My favorite vst is the Softube 84. It is a dead on reproduction of the Juno 106. The pro 800 has even bested that at times. They are in a 50/50 battle for who holds poly synth duties in my tracks now. It is more versatile than I was expecting. The one thing that threw me off at first is that the volume is a bit different than my other behringer, the Pro-1. The pro-1 has a pretty consistent volume when you change the filter envelope, amp envelope or the different oscillator waveforms. The Pro-800 is a little more finicky with levels. Especially when combing different waveforms on the same oscillator. Add a square and a saw wave together and the volume of that oscillator will almost be cut in half. It isn't that big a deal. There is a couple of times where the oscillator volumes are all the way up, the output is pegged and I have still had to bump up the preamp to get a good recording level. My Pro-1 goes straight into an AD, no preamp and I never have to worry about the level. Slight changes on the output will do the job. They are different synths I know, but I thought I would mention it. It's a great synth and it is definitely worth the purchase!

Will scratch that analog itch

By Jon J. from BATAVIA, IL
Music Background: Amateur keyboardist

The good:

What's not to love? 8 voice polyphony for $ and packed to the brim with features. On the grand spectrum of early 1980s polyphonic analog beasts, the Pro 800, similar to synths in the Prophet line that it's emulating, tends to have a slightly darker sound. While this synth does not have a full modulation matrix, the LFO destinations as well as the poly-mod section allow enough latitude for soundcraft to keep things interesting, along with velocity and aftertouch responsiveness for the amplifier and the filter AND aftertouch responsiveness for the LFO. The rubber membrane keypad allows access to a menu system that can be a bit dense at first, but users will soon grow accustomed to it. Similarly, the four-character 7 segment LED display is simple but effective, even going so far as to creatively render patch names when each is selected.

Musically, this is an easy synth to get lost in. All of the most important parameters are represented by knobs and switches on the front panel so it encourages exploration. Within the first week of use I created about 20 or so of my own patches: dark etheral pads, shimmering leads, arpy basses, and of course brass patches. Being by nature a darker sounding synth it doesn't do brass quite as well as, say, a Jupiter 8 or an Oberheim OB-X, but it's still perfectly usable.

No shortcuts were taken in build quality - the unit is solid, the knobs have an appropriate amount of resistance when turning, and the switches have a nice chunky feel. I haven't had the unit long enough to give any opinions on longevity.

The nitpicks:

* Documentation: Subsequent firmware updates can add features that are not in the print manual. This is clearly a very picky nitpick, but I wish there were a "live documentation" website that would contain each firmware's documentation.

* Documentation: When I first got the synth, Behringer had made no attempt at documenting the SysEx patch format and I ended up reverse engineering most of it. Behringer seems to have since rectified this (it's available on their website) but the documentation still feels incomplete - it doesn't give a full account of different/older patch versions, and the synth is shipped from the factory with a few patches that use an older version.

* The rotary encoder used to dial in menu parameters does absolutely nothing in either preset mode or in manual mode while editing a patch. I think that the rotary encoder, at the very least, should scroll through the patches in a given bank when in preset mode.

* Can't set a patch name directly in the synth - this can only be accomplished using an external SysEx tool.

The bad:

There is nothing about this synthesizer, factoring in its price, that I would consider bad.

Conclusion:

If you're like me and have always wanted to dip your toe into the world of polyphonic analog synthesis but have been put off by the price, then this is your ticket. There is nothing else like this on the market for anywhere even close to this price point.

More solid and bigger than I thought

By Gimin K.

When I watched online reviews and youtube videos before I order this synth, I thought that knobs will just like MS-20 mini. However, the size is really bigger than I thought it would be(which is great!). knobs are really solid and high quality. except the menu selector knob (for UI). The most impressive thing about this synth is the sound. Compared to nord lead 4, this analog 8 poly sounds much louder, clearer, more cheesy, and massive.

The only thing that I dislike is the menu diving. The accessibility could have been much better by adding two or three more switches. But there are online web editor like swumpf and it works great. Behringer synth app in Mac was not useful except the firmware upgrade.

Excellent Analog Polysynth For The Price

By Subtronik

I've owned my Pro-800 since August 2023 and know Behringer has produced yet another amazing analog polysynth. It sounds wonderful, especially when running it through a Strymon Cloudburst. It's super easy to dial in whatever lead, bass, or pad sound you want and has extra features the original Prophet-600 doesn't. The membrane buttons are my only gripe, but for the price I'll live. I've linked a video showing how to properly upgrade the Pro-800's firmware since some users seem to be experiencing some problems with that.

Underwhelmed

By William B. from Emporia, KS
Music Background: A Worship guitarist who loves electronic music.

Maybe I set my expectations too high for this. After watching many videos online, I was convinced this would be the analogue synthesizer that fill the role of a polysynth in my setup. What I found was the sounds were kind of thin to my ears; a little to on the 80's pop sound for my taste. Also the user interface missed the mark. I'd have to memorize too many combinations of presses of the membrane buttons to use the synth fully. If this sound is what you are looking for, then maybe getting a software editor/librarian to go with it would solve that problem. Bottom line- I ended up returning it

Great instrument

By Ken B. from Houston, TX

I bought a Prophet 600 when they first came out, and sold it about 10 years later. Worst decision I ever made! So, I was very happy to get my hands on the Pro 800, and to find that it's a very good emulation of the Prophet 600.
The on-board sounds are very good, but I don't believe that it's the same set of sounds that my P 600 had. That said, many are the same. I have this vivid memory that 96 was the Vox organ (96 tears), and this one is the same.
My only complaint: The manual is not very friendly, and I had trouble finding how to do some operations. I'm thankful for YouTube.

INCREDIBLE value for the money, FANTASTIC sound, very authentic...

By J. L. from Florida
Music Background: studio engineer songwriter and multiinstrumentalist.

I have been a pianist/synthesist since approximately 1975. I have seen the growth and change and evolution, and I have PLAYED (and owned) most of the best of history, including most of Sequential's fantastic line. There wasn't a sound from the 70's that didn't have prophets or "pro's" on them. I owned a vintage prophet 600...I believe at the time it was Sequential's first MIDI keyboard---if i recall correctly---and this thing sounds even better than that. It is SO thick with its 8 voices, and it is $. That is truly an incredible feat. This thing is THICK, and it is currently in my main lineup. This thing, along with their DeepMind, are two of the best things Behringer has produced, and that's saying a lot. The filters are SO nice, the envelopes are so variable, and the VCO's (there are 3, with 2 being wave based, and the third being "noise") are perfectly "analog" and versatile. If you need a polysynth with vintage sounds, and you are on any sort of budget---AND you already have midi controller or keyboard with midi out---get this thing, you wont' regret it. Having patch memory is a FANTASTIC bonus as well. Behringer is doing great things, and I'm addicted!

UPDATE THE FIRMWARE!!

By Sweetwater Customer from MA
Music Background: Berklee graduate

SO HAPPY I tried the firmware update before giving up on this synth!!! Never written a review but need to shout my experience far and wide to others who may receive a unit with early firmware and be disappointed at the seeming lifelessness of the sound. Apparently the envelope issue was a huge factor in making the synth's voice "laughably thin" as one reviewer described it.

Kinda mind-boggling how the units shipped with this issue in the first place, but bravo to Behringer for living up to their promise of listening to their customers and responding quickly to the issue. I'm so excited and inspired by the sound I'm hearing after the update, and to finally own a "real" poly analog synth after trying the other option(s) remotely in this range and being underwhelmed and disappointed.

Tl;dr update the firmware, make music, be happy!

Little thing packs a huge punch

By Mike K. from Philadelphia, PA
Music Background: Organist in St. James & The Apostles and Music Director at School of Rock - Fort Washington, PA

Bought this and it entered my live rig immediately. I MIDI it up with a Hammond XB-2 and the layering of organ and analog polysynth in tandem with fuzzed-out electric piano, just adds a level of depth to my overall sound that I didn't even realize I was sorely missing.

I've heard some complaints about the limitations on this particular synth, but I'm a firm believer in "limitations breeds creativity" and I'm always discovering interesting new textures even with what limited controls are present.

This was my first analog polysynth purchase, and will by no means be my last, but I will say that I think Behringer knocked it out of the park with this one and it will be a tough sell for analog poly that does as much at such a low price-point.

Great band for the buck

By Jon from USA
Music Background: Producer

Awesome 16 voice analog polyphonic synth! Programming it is pretty extensive and there are a bunch of really good (and free) user presets you can download.

BEWARE: If you are wanting to mount this in a standard 19" rack like I did, the power and output jacks on the back are at such an angle that when plugged in exceed the clearance for a 3U module so unless you have a big gap above where it's mounted, there's not enough clearance for it to sit flush underneath another module. You will need to buy a 5.5 x 2.1 right angled dc extension cable (about $10 on Amazon) and you will need a 1/8" TS to 1/4" TS cable to plug into the "audio out" port on the front since you won't find a right angled 1/4" that is low enough to let the unit be mounted flush if you use the back port.

A Six Star Rating

By Matthew J. from South Bend, Indiana

This is my very first analog polyphonic synthesizer. Why? Because this is the very first and most affordable one of its kind in the history of commercially available analog polys. For decades, this technology has been out of reach for everyone but people with very deep pockets, but no more and, make no mistake, this is more bang for everyone's buck (including the aforementioned former gearistocracy).
Not only is this a faithful replication of the original, it's an extremely powerful subtractive sound generator, so faithful it's going to change the musical landscape just as affordable electric guitars did during the 1960s. This is the first time many of these synth circuit designs being "cloned" are going to reach their full promise thanks to four decades of technological evolution, miniaturization, and improved-and-streamlined manufacturing.
Synthesizers of all kinds have truly become a mass-marketing innovation in themselves, and their future looks bright. I'm excited for the kids, too, as there can never be too many tools of creation, and tools are what synthesizers are, no more, and no less. This is an optimal tool. Like their other clones, Behringer's build quality is excellent, "built like a tank," with an almost endless capacity to realize one's musical ideas, a lushness one expects from solid analog circuitry--very close to perfect for what it is.
This is everything the manufacturer is saying, and beyond, with an ease of use that makes it accessible to anyone interested. Artists should invest; they won't be disappointed.

Sounds like a cheap toy

By Michael C.
Music Background: Pro for over a half century

Maybe it's because I once owned a Memorymoog and am very familiar with a Prophet 5, but especially since I own and love my two Poly D's I think this thing sounds just ridiculously thin and cheap next to them. Your mileage may vary but I sent it backl after ten minutes of playing it.

First Impression: Wow

By Robert H. from Saint Louis Park, MN

My first synth was a Sequential Six-Trak, way back in 1984, I was feeling nostalgic for that type of sound again. I tried a Prophet Rev 2 a couple years ago and did not gel with that sound, I sold it. I didn't want to spend the money on a fancier Prophet like the 6, 5 or 10. I'm more of a digital oscillator guy, I like the variety you get from that.

So I thought I'd try a Pro 800, the first Behringer product to enter the house. Price to performance, this is a bargain. You'll probably want to get some non-factory patches in here asap, then you'll really hear what this baby can do (what others have done with it). When there is a librarian for this, you'll be able to create an awesome custom collection of patches with a surprising level of variety and depth. Don't be fooled by the simple front panel layout, there is a lot of synthesis potential in here.

A lot of the really stunning sounds are Unison, so it becomes a mono synth, but for $400, it's worth it. I have some concerns about the longevity of the membrane switches, those are not known to stand up too well, but it looks like they built it in the modular fashion so that panel can be replaced without too much difficulty. It still seems a little buggy with firmware 1.4.1, but updates are quite frequent, they are listening and addressing user issues, just give it some time. It is usuable right now, just not perfect, but being analog, should it ever be perfect?

Speaking of perfect, the calibration seems very tightly controlled, which is good, the analog electronics are quite stable. It would be nice to have a "vintage" setting at some point, I think the stable electronics allows for that to be coded to great effect.

In short, if you want an analog poly and don't want to break the bank, I'm not sure there's anything better at the moment at this price point.

A budget Prophet 5

By Sweetwater Customer from America

It can get close to the Prophet 5 sound. It's close enough for my needs. The 100 factory presets aren't great but you can either make your own patches or download new ones. Don't let complaining about menu diving keep you from getting this beautiful and powerful analog beast. I look at the menu options as making it more powerful than the original Prophet 600 and it isn't hard once you learn your way around the menus.

Exceeds expectations

By Dennis R. from Bradenton, FL
Music Background: semi-pro musician

This is an amazing unit. Hard to believe that a unit the size of the Neutron, is a 400 memory, 8 voice poly fully programmable analog synth. It's gonna take a while to catch up on orders for everyone that wants one of these. Throw in that it responds to Poly AT... that is next level. Analog warmth, and short of the Gligli upgrades/menu work, it's all right there on the front panel to tweak on the fly. With all the physical controls, it's great for designing/learning synth programming from an initial patch. No internal effects, but it's engine stands up to any analog poly synth in the biz.

Need six stars, best classic sounding analog that hit the market since the 80's.

By Sweetwater Customer

I cant begin to describe how many analog S
synths I've bought and sold, and many I still have including recent ones like NINA, Prophet 10 reissue, Polybrut, various Moogs, etc.

The Pro-800 is finally a new synth that sounds like a vintage 80's synth. Major difference. There's so many classic phrases I tried playing on the new ones where I couldn't get that vibe out of them, yet with the same playing skills I'm finally able to hear the nuances come forth that make ALL the difference in bringing forth musical inspiration. Folks this is the one to get, save your money and forget the rest of them.

Quickly became my favourite synthesizer!

By Norbert
Music Background: Touring Musician

Behringer did an amazing job with this one, and they continue improving it by adding features with firmware updates.
I have owned a lot of synths but this is the first time I immediately connected with one, can't stop playing with it.
Probably thanks to the simple, intuitive architecture.
Its sonic capabilities are already beyond the "original" Prophet 600 thanks to the additional features like noise generator,
improved envelopes, etc.
The built quality is absolutely solid, easily as good or even better than some of my instruments made by other well known synth makers.
The fact that Behringer can provide such a quality and feature-packed instrument at that low price is almost unbelievable.

I've just recently challenged myself to recreate the main theme of Stranger Things using only this synth, have a listen!

Not a bad Polysynth...for the Money possibly the best...

By Mark from Maryland

The Pro-800 hits all the marks for an analog polysynth unless you need or want an more complex mod matrix. The sounds are warm and analog. The tuning seems pretty stable after 15 minute warm up and a run through the tuning cycle. Controls and feel of the unit are good, we'll see how the choice for membrane buttons goes in the long run but for now they work fine. If I had one gripe it is that some of the options for sound design are buried in menus, but it is a small gripe and most of the controls give you a fairly wide variety of sound options. Mono output and no effects are to be expected at this price point. I kind of enjoy the dryness of the sound, as it gives you options in your DAW (or an external effects unit) for adding effects. Overall I am very pleased with my purchase!

Kinda knew what I was getting yet I was still surprised

By Keith H.

Is it the fattest analogue tone out there? No…Is it the classic Prophet 5 tone? No…Does it lack a bit of bottom end? Yes…its a bit thin even, smooth not gritty. Its an 8 voice VCO for $ that sounds straight out of the 80s. The exact flavour I was looking for. Its been complimenting my OB6, another VCO that cost $ more, crazy. For anyone looking for that early eighties prophet flavour its a no brainer. Bugs are already being ironed out and new features added, behringer seem really determined to give users what they are asking for with this.

Sweetwater and Darius sorted me out with a pre-order and it was as smooth as every transaction, A+ as per usual.

Too good to be true.

By Nathan L. from Louisiana
Music Background: Professional

First, thanks to my sales rep Ed Nystrom for reserving one of these for me months ago and getting it shipped out so quickly!

This is the first behringer synth I've owned, and I've been through many dozens of high-end machines from every big name. I've been holding out on behringer, waiting for them to release a true analog polyphonic synth at their famous price point, and they sure have delivered! The sound is everything you'd hope for from a classic analog synthesizer: warm, heavy, colorful and massive. I'm running it into a vintage small stone phaser, moog minifooger delay and drive, and then into a vintage mixer with a spring reverb tank built-in. The sound is so inspiring i already have new ideas brewing for composition. For a controller I recommend hammer-action to get that tactile sensation. The Studiologic SL73 is what I have, and you can get one right here on Sweetwater. It makes a big difference playing a great-sounding synth like this with a keybed that has proper action and doesn't feel lifeless.

What a great time to be alive! Cheers.

No excuse now for anyone not to own a modern analog with a vintage vibe plus it keeps getting better as time goes by.

Best Bang for the buck for a mono-timbre 8 Voice VCO/VCF/VCA poly

By Craig from Texas

Having gotten a little time to tweak on the Pro 800 it seems to me to be a very versatile analog mono-timbre 8V dual VCO instrument.

I played the 600 when Sequential Circuits released it in '82 and immediately had issues with the envelope genrator resolution in dialing in sounds. While it was one of the first MIDI instruments, it did not tweak like an OB, P5, J8, or Memorymoog due to the computer generated envelopes and their attendant lower resolution. I know the later aftermarket 3rd party ROM helped the Pro 600 greatly and Behringer seems to have improved on their efforts.

The "hidden" functions offer a lot of parameter space with ENV choices and separate LFO/Vibrato sources. The Autotune accuracy choices give some "slop" to the tuning after warm up so you can get pretty vintage sounds there. The Pro 8000 also support polyphonic aftertouch.

Over all, testing with firmware version 1.27 has yielded up some pretty musical results so far and the "bang for the buck" for an analog VCO/VCF/VCA 8V is really impressive.

Firmware updates are easy with the SynthTribe application, although they keep the data transfer rate low for safety.

This may not tick everyone's boxes, but as an olde school analog guy who grew up during the 60s/70s, the PRO 800 has a formidable sound palette for a $ box controlled from a Montage 7/Cubase.

I was pretty frustrated with the marketing hype/ground truth lag, but Uli's team has hit the ball out of the park for me with this very formidable (so far) piece of kit.
