Behringer LmDrum Hybrid Sampling Drum Machine Reviews

Drum Machine with 109 Sounds, 64-step Sequencer, Dual-mode Filter, and Wave Designer

Wielded by notable artists of the '80s, from The Human League to Tears for Fears and even to the King of Pop himself, the inspiration behind Behringer's LmDrum could not be any more coveted by sound designers and synthesis explorers at Sweetwater. Bearing a true-to-time sampling sound engine, a complete arsenal of sounds, and potent modern controls, their dreams of composing vintage-inspired rhythms have come to life. Built within is a powerful 64-step sequencer, harnessing vintage sounds while offering up complete modern manipulation and control for percussive potency like never before — not to mention Pattern and Song operation modes for expanded use, whether onstage or within a studio setting. The best part? It's all primed with modern USB and MIDI connectivity, ensuring you'll have no problem including this legendary drum performance wherever and whenever it's required.

A classic already

By Techno P. from Avalon
Music Background: Still rock n roll to me..

Firstly, this drum machine sounds great. It emulates LM1, LM2, LM9000, SC Drumtraks, Simmons SDS, and the very, very rare Movement Drum Computer of which only about 50 were made. It has enough sample RAM to load in another 10 or so kits of 15 instruments. It has separate outs and is quick to use once you get the hang of it. It has polyrhythm on all 15 tracks, bitcrusher that goes from 12 bit to 1 bit on each track, step-filter that you can assign tracks independently to. Probability, flam per track. Downsides, you can't alter the pitch on each step, and there are only 16 kits (1 kit per bank). You can't change the samples on a preset without changing the samples on every other preset in that bank. But you can alter pitch, attack, decay etc for each instrument on each preset in the bank, so it's quite easy to get very different presets using the same samples. We would describe this as a brilliant drum machine if you want a few drum machines in one box. It's a 'studio' drum machine that's small and light enough to use at home. We think it's a better drum machine than the BMX as it has 15 instruments, and it'll be the machine everybody wants once Behringer stop making them.

Good sound, 5/10 U.I, 1/10 customer support

By Sweetwater Customer

My Lm Drum machine did not come with the 109 sounds as advertised--- It only came with 19. I reached out to both Behringer and Sweetwater about this, and was advised by sweetwater to download the synthtribe software to edit settings. The library tab in synthtribe will not load, even after watiing for many hours. I have reached out to Behringer about this and about issues for other products as well, and never have I even got an email confirmation after submitting lengthy support tickets. I wish Behringer cared about its customers as much as it cares about replicating classic equipment.

Mac version of Synthtribe on App store needs to be updated.

By Christopher L. from SALT LAKE CITY, UT

I have had a bit of frustration getting synthtribe working on my MAC. It worked on my Windows PC, and I was able to explore this awesome drum machine from my windows PC, but I hate windows. After some futzing around with the tool in MAC, I noticed that the most recent version offered in the mac store was 2.5 or something like that. Then looking at what was on Behringer, it was 2.9. I removed the 2.5 version, and installed the 2.9 from behringer website, and BAM. My frustration is gone. Someone needs to kick Apple App Store in the head, and get them to change the version offered to 2.9 or later. The Behringer page needs to update the related downloads of LM Drum to offer the 2.9 or later. I downloaded 2.9 from a link for a different product.

I am pretty happy with LM Drum now. So cost effective.

Iykyk

By Sweetwater Customer

I knew what I was looking at the moment I saw it: a dirty sampler with analog circuitry with an impossible price.

It did not disappoint but I believe anyone approaching it to replace, let's say an MPC will be incredibly disappointed.

For drum tracks it shines, brightly, just as bright as sp1200 in many ways. Your drums will have that nastiness of the era and you won't pay thousands for it. Programming drums on this box is a breeze and rather entertaining to do so, swing sounds good.

Now try to chop and you'll hit a snag. Without getting in the weeds let's just say you kinda can but mostly cannot. Now this is where it again shines for sound design but a one and done box this is not.

The wave designer and analog filter really allow some disgustingly awesome sound design opportunities, it's impressive in fact.

If you know what you are getting into, there is a lot to love. Buy it for drum tracks, but it for sound design, you'll be satisfied as i am…. Immensely.

16 track DAC's

By Greg M. from Georgetown, IN

This machine will go down in history as one of the most iconic machines created by Roger Linn. This recreation and additional modern digital manipulation will live on longer than I.

Really Liking Mine

By Cap10NRG M. from PA
Music Background: Music Producer / YouTube Content Creator

This unit is a really cool little box that you may think you don't need, but what I can tell you is it has something to it that makes everything that comes out of it sound a little crunchy and some how special. I am glad I god one and I have made several video demoing it for my youtube channel. One video I would recommend is the Backing up and Restoring drum kits... You will REALLY want to learn to do this even if it is just for archival purposes, but mostly for trading kits!

And it's only 3.5 minutes

A drum machine that does not have quantize, WHAT?

By Dennis from Memphis
Music Background: Engineer, Producer, Bass Player, Chapman Stick Player

When Behringer set out to make this drum machine they often spoke about how it was going to replicate the legendary Linndrum. For those of us who have owned a Linndrum, you know the quantize values are painted on the top of the unit and there are buttons to access them.
Behringer did NOT copy the Linndrum. They got close. To quantize you have to dive into a menu and select values from 0-127. WHAT? What does that even mean? What if i want to quantize a pattern to 1/16th notes, what value is that.... 56? Who knows? Behringer does not know either! The operators manual is a joke (you can down load it off the website). Its lacking in every possible way. I reached out to Behringer's tech support about the quantize and their reply was " Please be informed that currently we do not plan to add this feature. The quantise system we have now works well, it's just different from the your view point and different from the original.
Timing on the original Linn Drum was not as tight as our LM DRUM. But microtiming can achieve the same kind of results.
I hope you understand.". So there you have it, a drum machine without quantize values. I ended up sending mine back to Sweetwater. I am NOT one of those Behringer haters, either. I own and love the VC340 (its perfect) and a few other behringer products. They just really missed the mark on this drum machine, IMO. Feels like they rushed it to market.

Outstanding Improved Reproduction

By James P. from Temecula, CA

What a beautiful high quality product! My candyman Stephen Cambell came through as always. A word of caution upgrading firmware - My unit failed and was stuck on DFU mode when using Synthtribe on my Macbook. I have used Synthtribe many times on 6 other Behringer products with this same Macbook. I read online to use Windows Synthtribe on a PC laptop. Luckily I have one and successfully upgraded the firmware! :)

One of the best products Behringer has ever produced

By Ari D. from Colorado

This is essentially a clone of the LM-1, with a 12-bit or 8-bit sampling engine and per-instrument out. You can use the MusicTribe software to replace the samples and have a gritty sampler. You can use the stock samples and sound like the 70s/80s. When you consider the fact that you'd probably be paying 10x as much for the original device, it's hard to argue against this!

80s sound abound!

By Jeffrey G. from Brownwood, TX

Immerse yourself in the iconic sounds of the 80s with this drum machine. Experience authentic 8/12-bit sampling and legendary 80s drum sounds, including the LM1*, LM2*, LM9000*, and more. Its user-friendly design and Behringer computer software interface make it easy to use. Plus, you can load your own samples, even in bulk, and record directly with the built-in input. As a new user, I'm excited about using the LmDrum to add to my drum tracks.

The 80’s Drum Machine Legend!

By Ricky R.

The Behringer LM Drum Machine is built off the LinnDrum LM-2 of the 80's but highly improved with sounds of the originals:
LM-1, LM-2, Linn 9000 that were the most defining drum machines of the 1980's with many famous users like Prince etc.
Behringer has done fantastic work remaking old classic drum machines, but vastly improved performance that You can afford!
I LOVE this machine! Built like a tank!
