Behringer Clocked Sequential Control Module 1027 8-step Sequencer Eurorack Module Reviews

32HP Eurorack 8-step Sequencer Module with 3 Pattern Channels, Rate and Pulse Width Controls, and 8 Position Gate Outputs

A faithful reproduction of a legendary step-sequencer module, the Behringer 1027 Clocked Sequential Controller brings three channels of 8-step sequencing to your Eurorack rig. The color-coded knobs provide a welcome visual shorthand, and they look great set against the brushed metal panel! Each of the three channels features an independent CV output to control external VCOs and modulators. The 1027 is loaded with connectivity options, including inputs for step rate, sequencer reset, and on/off for remotely starting and stopping the sequencer. You also have access to manual controls for step rate and pulse width. Additionally, the eight position gate outputs allow you to trigger your favorite modules from any of the 1027’s eight steps. Though synthesists here at Sweetwater have fully embraced Eurorack, we realize it can seem like a confusing — and costly — undertaking when you’re first starting out. However, Behringer modules such as the 1027 represent an affordable and gratifying pathway for exploring the world of Eurorack. Add it to your rig and achieve vintage synth tones that even the most discerning synthesists will adore!

Next best thing to a 1970s original

By Bruce
Music Background: Too extensive to fit into this tiny space

THIS THING IS A BLAST! Pair it with the 1050 Mix-Sequencer module and you will be able to create some *insanely* complex sequential patterns, and do it all with analog CVs.

This won't replace a DAW, or even a modern MIDI sequencer. This is a module for people who are totally into analog synthesis and love patch cords. (And trust me, if you get this one, you *will* need more patch cords.) But if you dream of wires, this thing is fantastic, especially when paired with the 1050. Get them together and you will be exploring their potential for a long time to come.

Yes, it would be nice to have 10 steps per channel instead of 8, but in squeezing the original 8" tall ARP design down to 5" tall Eurorack format some compromises had to be made, and I'd much rather lose two steps per channel than have to use the kind of tiny pots Behringer uses on their System 100 modules. I think Behringer made the right choice here.

If rating in sequence steps 8/10 ;)

By SeanZ from Southern Oregon
Music Background: Musician, Sound Engineer, Producer

As much as I would prefer the original 10 steps of sequencing, despite never having experiencing the original, I totally understand the cuts that need to be made when converting larger pieces of gear to eurorack format. Whether or not it's a musical decision or a limited space decision regarding engineering, I wasn't involved in the process nor would I be qualified to be. That said, this module is absolutely a BLAST to use, and when paired with the 962 sequential switch module, you have plenty of options for total step count. If you're on the fence about getting this module, preorder the next batch coming in, you won't regret it.

Almost, But Not Quite

By Jeff B. from Washington, DC
Music Background: Professional

I taught analog synthesis for the University of Virginia on their ARP 2500 in the mid-70s. This near replica of the original ARP 2500's 1027 Sequencer model is so close to the original that I wish I didn't have to mention that the only difference between the two is that there are two missing steps on each of the three channels. Yes, the ARP 2500's 1027 had ten steps per channel. Behringer has made some allusion to eight-steps being a "more musical" choice. Tell that to Dave Brubeck, ELP, Duke Ellington, Ginger Baker, and even Tangerine Dream!

Part of the original design of this module was that you could easily get any clock division between one and twenty-nine, when used the with 1050 Mix/Squencer. Thanks some pretty cool analog stuff, for the day.

Other than this, the module is 100% in Eurorack form. I love how there is no quantization on the sequencer voltages. I love microtonalty.

Thanks Behringer! Although not perfect, this is still a wonderful addition to this line. Now, how about a petition to get a 10 step version of this? I'd pay $ more for that!
