MXR M82 Bass Envelope Filter Pedal Reviews

Envelope Filter Bass Effects Pedal with Dry and FX Knobs

The MXR M82 Bass Envelope Filter injects your playing the classic, funk-infused quack only an analog effects pedal can deliver. This tone-packed stompbox's Dry and FX knobs makes balancing between direct and effected signals a breeze, allowing you to dial in the perfect amount of character without wiping out your low end. Decay and Q controls unleash the full gamut of filtered effects, while a Sensitivity knob conforms the pedal to your instrument's output and your playing style. The bassists here at Sweetwater appreciate the M82's durable design; its power supply circuitry can take over-voltage and polarity calamities like a champ. Moreover, true-bypass switching preserves your tone when you're not using the pedal. Players searching for the ultimate bass autowah pedal will find everything they're craving in the M82 Bass Envelope Filter.

Funky!

By Brian from California on December 20, 2023 Music Background: 40+years as a Weekend warrior.

This is a great sounding filter, I swapped out my mini Q-Tron for this to save space on my board and I think the effect is easier to control on this than the Q-Tron. I'd recommend this for anyone wanting to lay down some funk.

What about my guitar??

By William from Eastern Shore on December 30, 2022 Music Background: Semi-pro

First off, MXR needs to make a envelope filter for guitar! What up MXR??

Anyway, this pedal can be used with a guitar. It is focused on bass with some low end enhanced circuit. But, what if you plugged a guitar into it? Wow! Magic. There is a dry blend that makes a huge difference from any envelope filter I've seen. It adds a bit of low end and some top end clarity. This effect fills out your bottom end so it's not so thin. Also, a effect level. You can totally adjust how much of the filter comes thru.

The other controls can go from light, almost "stay closed" setting. I'm sure someone can use that setting. But it can go bonkers, bounce of the wall, bonkers. Love it. True bypass, so you cant push your signal. All analog so it's low power. Can use a battery as well.

My first envelope filter and I can get Jerry to Bootsy with a twist of the knobs. Very flexible in its usage.

Its a curious thing that MXR dosnt make note of its guitar potential. Or atleast make one for guitar. Worth a try if your so inclined.

This thing is just a brilliant stomp box. Like the adjustment and just wide variety

BOSS are always amazing

By Jeff Becerra on December 27, 2021 Music Background: Possessed

This pedal is exactly what I thought and wanted it to be. It gives that funky little short wah sound that is so prevalent in Funk. Great fun pedal. I pair this with my BOSS Bass Sub-Octave fuzz and it's a monster.

Like fondue in a Bubble Bath

By Sweetwater Customer on December 26, 2020

First Envelope Pedal, first bass pedal actually, and I don't think I'll ever need another Envelope in my life! First day with this little rocker. Got him as a gift, haven't been able to stop smiling since. I had scouted for an envelope pedal after taking an interest in that funky junk happening with them, and like the title, it sounds like a duck eating fondue in a bubble bath... I love it. It's so weird. Funky. Bubbly. Can't wait to get everything out on it! Easy to use, dialed in just how I like, still exploring. Great sound and volume, got the amp on half volume, rocking the house! Would recommend to any bassist or funk fan. This is a big piece in my journey to music euphoria. Musicphoria. Boom. Science.

Maybe not always practical, but good to have as an option

By Devin from Atlanta, GA on June 1, 2020 Music Background: Playing bass for 15 years now.

I got this pedal because I wanted the option to play some funky music now and then on my bass, even though I play in a fast-paced punk band. I will find a way to incorporate this into our sound eventually, and it will be awesome.

The purchase process was straightforward, although the shipping took a day and a half longer than the tracking info led me to believe. I understand in today's crazy world that anything can cause a delay so I wasn't too stressed about it.

It came undamaged, with the signature Sweetwater bag o' candy (I love bit o' honey and could eat an entire bag of those things). I got to plug the pedal up and use it the next day but it took me until the following day to figure out exactly how I'll be using it. So don't give up if it feels like it's not right for you. There are so many tonal options on this pedal, you'll eventually find a sound you like.

Every Bassist needs one!

By Jeff from Delaware on January 23, 2019

I've been wanting one of these bad boys for a while now. I am not disappointed! The dripping wet funk tones this thing is capable of is incredible. Dare I say it, I'm overwhelmed by TOO MANY knobs to adjust (only kinda). There's so many settings at your disposal that anyone can find that perfect sound they're looking for. High quality product. My buddy who plays guitar in our band is constantly asking if he can play my bass now because he loves the sound.

MXR M82 Bass Envelope Filter

By Aaron from Iowa on June 1, 2015

I've had this pedal for about a week and I've been playing it every single day so far. It's such a fun effect. If you're having a bad day, just plug it and funk it away! This is my first envelope filter so I can't make comparisons but I definitely won't be buying another one as long as I have this one. It was either this or the Digitech Bass Synth. The fact that the M82 has the dry and fx controls sold me. It's so cool to listen to all the different sounds you can make. You let the notes ring out and the sweep sounds so nice. You owe it to yourself to buy this. You need this in your life.

Great Pedal

By Sweetwater Customer on June 7, 2012

Great pedal overall. A very responsive pedal compared to most other auto wahs or envelope filters in the same category. I've played Boss, digitech and several other brands with the same function where I have come up short in tone, functionality, and response.

You are able to adjust this pedal to whatever specs that you are looking for in your tone, just adjusting the Q or sensitivity will be more than enough in the different sounds you will be able to produce. All the way from a drawn out treble wah sound to a very high attack synth type wah. Playing with the dry and wet knobs will continue your tone difference to whatever you would like.

Great pedal at a little more than average price, but well worth it. Sturdy and light as well. Will fit on any pedalboard and any type of genre that you can think of.

A superb effect

By Daragh Kinch from Dublin, Ireland on March 20, 2011 Music Background: Recording engineer/producer, professional musician

She's a beauty alright! A tiny package with all the parameters you want, built like a tank! The envelope follower circuit is is extremely responsive. Great for funky stuff of course, but I've found other great uses. Run it through a volume pedal to fade in the attack and you have yourself a great sounding polyphonic synth! The only thing to be aware of is the the possibility of overly resonant peaks overloading the inputs of subsequent gear in your chain. The sweep has the capacity to go very low, and the Q can get pretty sharp, so use responsibly!
All in all; a very reasonably priced beast of a little module to ad to the arsenal.

Fantastic pedal

By Dave from Jackson, MS on December 30, 2010 Music Background: Gigging bassist

I checked out every bass envelope filter currently in production. This one was by far my favorite. Versatile effect, with control knobs for every parameter. To me it just sounds so much thicker than any other EF, and I'm loving how small it is. I use a cutting board for my effects and space is definitely a factor. No on-board distortion but it works extremely well with my Bass Big Muff, which is a much better distortion than that of any other envelope filter which has one built in. It's not very heavy, but it seems to be very durable. I use this in the effects loop of my Tonebone Bassbone bass preamp, into a Peavey VB-2 all-tube head stacked on two Ashdown cabs, a 210 and a 115.

Good quality and good souns

By David on November 18, 2019

This pedal is really fun. I will admit that I probably will not use it a lot but it's a good pedal. The construction is solid and the features are really good. I really like the ability to add my dry sound to the effect. Overall I am happy with it. The size is great, really small package. It's really, really fun to mess around with. This is something that is super cool live.

I do not use pedals much, but I found myself using this often. I'm impressed!

Great tones for funky grooves!

By Crispy from Waterbury, CT on November 1, 2011 Music Background: Professional musician, educator, and all-around funky dude.

Having used many different envelope filters over the years, I was skeptical that I could find a modern product that would hold up to the older pedals that I have lost or worn out over the years. This pedal is not only chock full of fantastic tone, but it is also very durable. I highly recomend this pedal.

Good wah and tone effects for Bass guitar!

By jeffrey Wade Razor on August 24, 2020 Music Background: Semi pro bassist and keyboardist!

I havent fully used this pedal to full potential but with the Chorus and usind a delay I get some great effects I am happy with the purchase!!

Pretty decent!

By Sweetwater Customer on January 30, 2020

I enjoy the sounds I can get from this.
Through a clean signal or boosted or distorted this thing is a real champion. It gives you that quacky duck sound we all want with the decay rolled off from its max. When at max it sounds like a cocked wah. Having a dry and efx volume is perfect for letting you tone scupt. I would reccomend for bass, guitar, and synths. The q knob let's you set the frequency of the filter. I used this with my titan red witch delay and found what sounds like an army of ducks marching and chanting with each other. THE BEST ENV FILTER IVE USED. WOULD RECCOMEND!

Funky Town

By V.T from New York, NY on September 21, 2015 Music Background: Audio Engineer, Musician

I've had mine for less than a yr so far.
It's a pretty sweet pedal. I've had other filter pedals. Even the Aguilar. But when I heard this one, I just had to have it. So I sold the Aguilar, and bought this :)
I don't use it all the time...But its fun to experiment with.
I highly recommend it.

Bass Envelpe Fileter

Sounds great, with lots of control. Small and fits in pedal board nicely. Great for original funky stiff and to recreate those classic funks sounds.

Gift for my son; he loves it

mxr envelope filter

By Sweetwater Customer from usa on August 23, 2012 Music Background: recording/live sound engineer, pro musician

I have had other synth pedals, which are just as good, but i like how this sounds, easy to use, small solid case, im not a fan of the ac plug being on the side but i love this pedal, great for funk and electronic music, strong output as well. Other musicians on the circuit have had this pedal before i bought one, sounds great live and on recordings.

This pedal reminded me again why I never liked MXR pedals :-(

By James Lane from Brooklyn, NY on August 4, 2023

After 35 years of experimenting with pedals the clicking mechanism in this MXR pedal is still not smooth at all as compared to the ones in my Dark Glass Alpha Omega or Electro Harmonix Nano POG. I hope one day they will improve that one feature.
