Mesa/Boogie Bass 800D 800-watt Bass Amplifier Head
Mesa/Boogie Bass 800D 800-watt Bass Amplifier Head Reviews
Combining a tube-driven preamp with an 800-watt Class D power section, the Mesa/Boogie Bass 800D provides you with all the punch of the legendary Bass 400+ in a far more compact and road-ready package. In essence, the Bass 800D represents a melding of the Bass 400+’s (Mesa’s flagship bass head of the ’80s and ’90s) tube preamp architecture with the stage-ready appointments of Mesa/Boogie’s Subway series of amplifiers — foremost of which is a Class D amplifier section with warm, rich tube emulation circuitry. In lieu of the Bass 400+’s complex graphic EQ, the Bass 800D boasts a set of switches (Low/High gain, Deep, and Bright) to quickly tweak your tone, enhanced further by a robust 3-band EQ. Moreover, the Bass 800D also comes equipped with a rotary Highpass control to trim out unwanted sub-bass mud. Flip the amp around, and you’ll be greeted by top-of-the-line speakON outputs, a balanced DI output, an effects loop, and a 3-way Impedance switch to connect to the cab of your choice with ease. It all adds up to a high-performance powerhouse of low-end amplification that’s ready to rock any arena, supplying you with the best of both tube-driven warmth and crisp Class D clarity.

The "Slam" of an SVT in a small box
Class D amp that slams like an old school amp. Huge note weight and 3-D soundstage.
The EQ is not overly dramatic. If you like a parametric EQ, this amp is not for you. It's built in voice is killer though and the way the amp responds to touch feels very much like a large tube amp like the Mesa 400. Great interaction between deep switch, bass knob, and HPF and the same with treble and bright switch. I run the middle at 8 and rarely touch the EQ once I'm set for a particular room. Great amp and highly recommended!
Mesa Boogie Subway BD-800
This is a great bass head! I love the simplicity, and the wonderful tone. It has everything you need.
This is a very well thought out piece of equipment. Mesa Boogie hit a home run with this head!

Now that I have a few gigs with this;
To me, this is the best sounding solid state/hybrid/class D/whatever, amp head I have owned.
This even sounds better than some all-tube heads I own/have owned.
I love the light weight and the simplicity.
Too many knobs confuse me and the only thing I know to do is set them "flat."
"I'm not a smart man, but I know what good bass tone is!"
I set this on "Fat Classic Rock" with the Deep switch off.
My drummer loves it and guitar players are turning around.
Mesa Boogie 800D
I received this amp from Sweetwater a couple weeks ago. I've owned at least a dozen all tube amps over my 50 year career, but have never found a class D amp that satisfied my desire for the "feel" of a tube amp. My first impressions were "this is a really nice class D amp." After many hours of playing through this head and tweaking the tone, my impressions have changed. This is a really great sounding amp…punchy, articulate, warm, and powerful! Any bass amp with this kind of wattage will have plenty of horsepower, but this is the first class D I've ever played that actually has the TORQUE of an all tube amp. I can not only hear the tube goodness, but this has a presence that you can actually FEEL! Great job Mesa Boogie, Sweetwater, and my long time, patient, understanding, advisor Brad!
Mesa does it again!
I've owned the Mesa D-800+ for 4 years, never thought about replacing it, then the Bass 800D came along. Mesa has really outdone themselves with this amp. It is by far the most outstanding amp that I have ever played through, and I've played through quite a few over the decades.
If you're on the fence about it, go to Talkbass online and search for the thread titled: "New MESA BOOGIE release - MESA/Boogie Bass 800D - 800W Bass Amp Head"
There's plenty of questions, and answers about the 800D along with it's counterparts in the Mesa Subway lineup in that thread. A few live videos and a demo video of the amp in use can be found in that thread too.
The hype is real!
Nailed it.
I would really like to imagine I had a teeny tiny bit to do with this amp … I used to own a 400+. It was my favorite amp but became completely impractical to gig with. When I got a TT-800 several years ago, I asked on TalkBass why there was a need for two channels in that amp and said that if the "Boogie" channel was in an enclosure by itself, I would be all over it. Obviously, I wasn't the only one because here it is and it's everything I hoped it would be. I've owned and sold a dozen class D amps and this is the first one that made my hair stand up. Closest I've heard to that glassy, kick-in-the-chest power to an 80 lb tube amp I've ever experienced.
Worth waiting for!
Over the years I've owned a lot of amps from Ampeg SVT to Fender Dual Showman to Sunn Coliseum, etc. I've been longing for that vintage tube sound with power in a small, lightweight package and it's here.
The Mesa / Boogie Bass 800D has answered the call. This amp has warmth, depth, clarity, definition and punch.
I gigged this thing twice this weekend and it did not disappoint with its "in your face" sound. This is a BIG SOUNDING amp. I like it so much that I'm selling my Bergantino Forte HP2 to purchase another 800D as my backup amp.
If you've been looking for that vintage tube sound in a small but powerful package, it's here in the Mesa 800D!
